Defense Secretary Suggests Putin Might Nuke America, Says US Will "Defend International Order"

Tyler Durden's picture

Defense Secretary Ash Carter is a funny guy. We’re not out to disparage him personally (although we’ll happily disparage Washington’s foreign policy for which he is partially responsible), but he sure does have an uncanny ability to land himself in situations that end up generating amusing photo ops. Here are just two examples from last week:

"Show me some love"...

"Just listening to Kenny Loggins in my headphones with my water bottle and yeah, since you asked, that's my aircraft carrier down there"...

Of course to be fair to Carter, Washington hasn't exactly put him in a good position. After all, what the US is doing in Syria is deplorable and with the passing of MANPADS and anti-tank missiles to Sunni extremists near Aleppo, the whole "strategy" now borders on the bizarre, especially in light of what happened over the Sinai Peninsula last weekend and also taking into account Washington's relationship with Siite militias battling ISIS in Iraq.

Meanwhile, the situation in the South China Sea is just downright silly, as Washington and Beijing risk starting World War III over 3,000 acres of sand that Beijing piled on top of reefs in the Spratlys.

Still, when you're the face of The Pentagon, you've got to champion the narrative and that narrative now revolves around two things, i) a resurgent Russia, and ii) the rise of China.

Put simply (and colloquially), more than one US military strategist believes the US and NATO would be "annihilated" in a Baltic battle with the Russians and when it comes to China, well, getting into a maritime dispute in the South Pacific (which is the right way to analyze this by the way, because it's not like Beijing is going to sail into San Francisco and invade the US mainland) might be a horrible idea:

So, against that backdrop, and with Russia's dramatic intervention in Syria in mind, Ash gave a keynote speech during the annual Reagan National Defense Forum in southern California, on Saturday.

Below, we present the "highlights" as documented by the DoD and the video clip courtesy of AP. Enjoy your Sunday evening US foreign policy briefing and please do note that Carter suggests Putin wants to nuke America:

“In the face of Russia’s provocations and China’s rise,” Carter said, “we must embrace innovative approaches to protect the United States and strengthen that international order.”

Russia is violating sovereignty in Ukraine and Georgia and is trying to intimidate the Baltic states, and in Syria it is prolonging a civil war, the secretary added.

“At sea, in the air, in space and in cyberspace, Russian actors have engaged in challenging activities,” he told the audience, noting that Moscow’s nuclear saber-rattling raises questions about Russian leaders’ commitment to strategic stability.

“We do not seek to make Russia an enemy,”Carter said. “But make no mistake. The United States will defend our interests, and our allies, the principled international order, and the positive future it affords us all.”

Carter said the United States is modernizing its nuclear arsenal to ensure America’s nuclear deterrent, investing in new unmanned systems, a new long-range bomber, and innovation in technologies like the electromagnetic rail gun, lasers and new systems for electronic warfare, space, cyberspace, and others.

“And we’re accordingly transforming our posture in Europe to be more agile and sustainable,” the secretary said.

It would appear to the impartial observer that The US is the only party "Rattling sabres" Why can't the US just live peacefully alongside other Nations, especially when it's security is not being threatened in any way? Or is this the neocon "Wolfowitz Doctrine" in action? The problem is, these psycopathe actually believe that a pre-emptive nuclear strike is possible and have identified it as a viable option. God help us all.

Politics in the world now are multipolar.

Your job now is to get your heads out your asses, can a bunch of politicians, find some real diplomats and start solving problems rather than creating them.

Even though some of us have woken up, the Globalist Oligarchs have their tentacles too tightly wrapped around the levers of power, and i fear there is just no stopping it at this point.   We still have a few years to prepare because  RussiaChina won't hit us until their newer weapon systems come online. N. Korea attacking S. Korea will be your sign to flee to your shelter.   There's info all over the internet to get ready.   Good luck and see you on the other side.will set the US up

You were spot on until you called the N.Korea attacks S. Korea scenerio. Sorry, but that won't be it. Israel will attack Iran {with nukes}.  There is no "bunker busing" technology that will disrupt the Iranian nuke program, only a atomic strike will work, and that is what will be done after Israel sees that Iran is weeks away from having enough enriched uranium and no one else is going to stop them. THAT will be your cue to run for the hills!

why? yes, he is a Leftist. meanwhile, he is also one of the best scholars of propaganda. you can read his "manifacturing consent" books without becoming a raving leftist

what we are seeing in Washington we are also seeing in Moscow. specifically, Moscow made an information drive to explain why Russian missile capabilities have to be updated

switch over to Washington, and you see the Def Sec doing the same. with different words. interestingly, they contain way more inflammatory phrases then their Russian counterpart

conclusion: Washington's taste for "how to explain spending for nukes" is different. it contains more drama, more fear, more everything, including lots of fantasies about what would be possible to do with nukes, or what others could do with them

Russia, for all it's faults - and we europeans maintain several detailed catalogues about them - does not believe in Armageddon and does not believe in World Wars being beneficial

then beliefs about The End Being Near are mostly concentrated in the US, and belief in World Wars having positive sides... exist only in the one country for which WW2 was beneficial

Russia is mostly devoid of both sets. yes, there is some Eastern Nihilism in Russia, but it's negligible outside of the cultural area

so the suggestion that "Putin Might Nuke America" is only something that some Americans can take seriously. it's propaganda specifically tailored to local tastes

reading Chomsky might even help you to understand the mechanics in play. yes, he is a Leftist. no, this does not mean that everything he says is rubbish. there is, though, a very interesting strain of propaganda that tells people that everything Leftists have to say is rubbish... and it works very, very well

I agree that Oblaster is a top notch tool but for starters we can negotiate our way through most any dispute, the fact remains that they don't have any intentions of real negotiations. The SecDef running around with a loose tongue screaming "the russians are coming" is not a good starter. Is it just me? I have not read anywhere any rhetoric by Vlad or Russian Officials hinting they want to start a war with the USSA.

All the rhetoric I do hear seems to be coming only from the Press Organs of the USSA Supreme Soviet and the Politburo...

Our only hope is that, like the now-defunct USSR, the USSA falls to a similar fate and collapses economically. It would give the citizens of the USSA a chance to remake the place back to the USA, hopefully even better than the situation Russia has evolved into, which is better for Russia than being under the yoke of the old CCCP.

The very consistent view of the Russian "people on the ground" is that America / "NATO" (same thing, different packaging) WILL resort to pre-emptive nuclear attack. This is why the Moscow, etc. Civil Defence systems are all being / have been refurbished / upgraded.

One of the useful benefits of having relatives living and working in Moscow - real, not "Western - interpreted" feedback.

Another point - the general feeling "over there" is that if "The West" DOES elect to use nuclear weapons as a first-strike option, the Russian people WILL NOT STOP until EVERY Westerner is dead. They particularly dislike Americans (at least in Moscow), and the level of "Anti-American" sentiment there is higher than at the height of the Cold War.

Quite an achievement for an Administration that recieved a Nobel "Peace" Prize, for doing nothing . . . . .

Yes I translate a few russian sites and they are getting pretty pissed. They are starting to gel around their country and behind it, That little aircraft incident seemed to do the trick on finally making them mad enough and I think they have had it and are starting to accept this as inevitable as diplomacy seems to have failed.. One site I read had 800 comments on one article about it and usually has about 50.

I think the US is finally going to start getting some of what it has been asking so adamantly for. Can't say that I blame them, Im just wishing I was  ready to be able to move from here myself, Im pretty disgusted too and I think the whole world is starting to get that way towards us.

If these stupid arrogant bastards think that American cities are going to escape this unscathed as in the past against this growing alignment of nations they are delusional.

If you were Putin, why would you waste a nuke on something so obviously tearing itself up from inside? Putin's people likely studied real history, the details of how people screwed up, the intellectual discipline it takes to identify worthy goals and pursue them over generations, as a civilization.  Do you see any of that in our leaders? Putin's people don't either, ours are clearly just another ruling class deep in self-satisfied groupthink, any reader in classics would identify it immediately.  I think the alternatives after the clear identification of that situation are all varieities of momentum and vectors of aspects of fail.  What do you think the F-35 means? Every era is given a symbol of the failing intellectual standards, surely this era will be symbolized by the F-35.  Surely our leaders are convinced it is a brilliant move that our intelligence services have been so successful in convincing our potential enemies that their airframes are superior, and in nearly every dimension.

Why would Putin be woried by a political system with these characteristics :

If you have studied the evidence, you know 9/11 was a false flag.

https://thinkpatriot.wordpress.com/2015/02/09/166/

Given that, and the approaching cliff,

https://thinkpatriot.wordpress.com/2015/10/27/ignoring-the-absolutely-in...

And knowing how our Israeli-Neocon cabal likes risks, what do you expect next?

https://thinkpatriot.wordpress.com/2015/11/09/oil-is-the-excuse/

Scares the shit out of me, no one can have confidence in anyone's thinking, the evidene is that they avoid wars by accident, and mostly are biased to war.  I have very little confidence that anyone represents my interests in peace.

If you were Putin, why would you waste a nuke on something so obviously tearing itself up from inside?

You are missing the context. The context is the downing of the Metroject airliner. The evidence has been gathered and liklely proves that it was brought down by US manufactured items (I am guessing a missile with an explosive warhead parts which would have been recovered from the wreckage even though the evidence is not released to the public). The US must have been begging Russia to blame it on IS planting a bomb and continue with the programme in Syria while the US makes some concessions to Russia regarding Assad. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin is not an idiot and knows that once he agrees to this line of lying, there will be no end to "terrorist" strikes on Russian civilians to manipulate Russian public opinion and coerce Russian government. He would have threatened to nuke the USA, if necessary, unless the US agrees to admit the facts and address the consequences. Once the findings of the investigation are released officially, there will be no going back and Russia's actions have to be consistent with them. So whatever the official story will be has to be agreed upon before then.

The USA has two options (1) Admit it and claim it as a mistake (2) Blame it on someone else claiming that whatever caused the crash (e.g. US made missile) was in fact sold to an ally.

Option 1 is nearly impossible, since the US had no reason whatsoever to fire a missile into Egypt and if it was a mistake, too much time has elapsed to admit since they should have realised the mistake soon after the incident.

Option 2 is the only one left. But whichever ally they blame it on, they should be ready to sacrifice that ally completely and Russia should be willing to accept that sacrifice. Saudi Arabia would suit the US just fine, but won't be acceptable to Russia. Any culprit identified should either be destroyed economically and militarily through the UN sanctions route (just like Iraq) or a fullscale military destruction for Russia to convince the Russian public that they have been brought to justice. It would be impossible to impose UN sanctions aganst Saudi Arabia, since China whose economy would be destroyed without the oil from KSA, would simply not accept to take the USA at its word that the item has been sold to Saudi Arabia (since the Saudis can be expected to vehemently deny any involvement) and veto any sanctions against KSA. Russia would then have to choose the military options against KSA, but then it will immediately fall foul of the entire Muslim community whose two holiest cities Makka and Madina the Kindom contains and they certainly wouldn't wish that. So accepting to blame the KSA purely on the words of the USA, is not something Russia can accept.

That leaves Israel as the only country that the US can blame it on and convince their own public and the world as a plausible story. There will be few who can claim it as not plausible. And there will be none on the UNSC opposed to sanctioning Israel once the USA too agrees to it. The USA will have no choice but to agree to sanctions, because the alternative would be to see Russia militarily destroy Israel. Ashton Carter is making the case for the USA dumping Israel. It is not an easy decision for the USA to dump the protection offered to Israel at UNSC. It will at once remove any feeling of immunity other US client states, like Saudi Arabia or Qatar have. After all, if Russia can force the US to dump Israel, what guarantee can they feel of protection either militarily or at the UNSC, if they fall foul of Russia? The shift in the perceived global power of the US will be instantaneous and permanent. Moreover, they will have to deal with the domestic Israeli lobby and the Evangelical Christian retards. The only way to shut both up is to project that the alternative to dumping Israel is to risk a potential nuclear war with Russia. Regardless of what claims about the retaliation capability the US has that they can make, Americans will know that they cannot be protected from Russian nukes, if Russia decides to launch them. Americans love their backsides more than they love the power they can project globally or protecting Israel. When faced with the choice of getting evapourated by a nuke or dumping Israel (and the loss of power projection that comes with it), it is a no-brainer.

Of course, Russia will never openly discuss the nuclear option, until after the findings of the investigation are public. So it is not possible to quote a public statement by Vladimir Putin to vilify him and raise patriotic fervour within the US to dent the impact of the findings of the investigation. But when Vladimir Putin seethes with anger and promises to bring the perpetrators to justice, even if it means engaging in a nuclear war, after the findings become public, everyone will understand he means business. After all, what good are Russia's nukes if they can't be used against those who murdered in cold blood over 200 of Russian citizens and won't even apologise for it? It will be a moment similar to when George Bush declared "You are with us or against us", the difference being that Russia would have the evidence and conclusions of an investigation team comprising of not just Russians, but also Egyptians, French, Irish and Germans to back her claims of who the perpetrators are. Russia would have followed all international protocols and prudence in pointing the finger. No better situation for any national leader to announce the willingness to use nukes. Definitely the USA wouldn't want the finger pointing at them.

Watch as the West keeps building the case against Israel. The recent drama by the British about a "bomb on plane" leading the UK and Russia suspending flights and returning passengers and their luggage on separate planes will be later "admitted" as intelligence about a planned future event, possibly to cast doubts about any findings of the investigation of the Mterojet airliners about that not being a bomb on the plane. Notice also the funny "admission" by the UK that the Thomson Airways flight from Sharm el-Sheikh dodged a missile on 23rd August 2015 and they simply assumed that the missile which was within 1000 feet of a passenger jet was a "routine drill" by the Egyptian army, without even bothering to check with the Egyptian army! The Egyptin army will, at an appropriate time, deny that it was conducting any drills in that region let alone fire a missile that could come threateningly close to a passenger jet. It can then be safely assumed that the missile was fired by the same entity that successfully downed the Metroject airliner.

The gang is always a gang, even if the gang members call themselves the "Coalition" and even if the head of this gang is a corrupt cop.
The so-called "Anti Syrian coalition" led by the United States, in its essence, is a gang.

Some people In Washington think they can break any rules of international law. They think that they are "exceptional" and therefore they can break any international laws in Syria and wherever they want.
But the Russian did not agree that the US may violate any laws always and wherever they want.
In addition, the Russian missiles do not know anything about "US exceptionalism."

Soon there will come a time when the idiots in Washington will sit in his underground bunker without being able to come to the surface. At this point, they certainly be realize that they made a mistake and the whole world disappeared. But this understanding does not allow them to bring the situation back and re-shoot the bad moments, as "unfortunate episode in the film", without the negative heros in the new episode.
