From Protesting Vietnam to Demanding "Safe Spaces" – What Happened To America's College Kids?

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

I grew up hearing stories of protest. About those years, a decade or so before I was born, during which America’s youth rebelled against the prevailing establishment, and forever changed the nation’s course in some meaningful ways.

Of course, many of you will accurately state that not much about the imperial state has actually changed since those days of protest, and that in fact, the out of control abuse of power both abroad and at home has gotten far worse in the subsequent decades. I will concede this point, but want to add a caveat. Certain things really did change, particularly with regard to racial discrimination in these United States. Not to say things are perfect, but to discount the significant gains achieved in this regard would be unfair.

Nevertheless, as far as the “shadow government” is concerned, not much has changed. Other than the fact that the status quo learned important lessons from those years of rebellion, and was forced to operate even more secretly than it did before. As an example, the military-industrial complex learned that it couldn’t have genuine journalists running around war zones after images taken in Vietnam shocked the nation and helped turn popular sentiment against it. As such, reporters in war zones these days are nothing more than propagandists and imperial shills. Indeed, increasingly effective propaganda and a captured corporate media has probably been the single most important tool used by the shadow government to maintain and consolidate control over all these years. In a nutshell, people have been dumbed down, as well as mentally and emotionally castrated, to the point of being almost unable to rebel against anything of real importance.

Which brings me to the point of this post. The reason I brought up the civil disobedience and activism of the 1960’s, is because it did at least represent a true conflict with that generation’s status quo, and it did in fact attempt to tackle some of the pressing issues of power, justice and freedom that existed at the time. This is in stark contrast to what passes as “activism” on college campuses today, which essentially amounts to “pro-censorship” students vigilantly defending an entirely invented and unconstitutional right to “not be offended.” Whereas the 60’s movements, for all their failings, were at least ostensibly about freedom (of the mind and body), today’s college movements are strikingly focused on shackling the mind, and turning campuses in unintellectual, zombie-filled wastelands.

Of course, while someone like myself might be tempted to just laugh off such infantile and pathetic “activism,” it is in fact one of the most dangerous trends facing modern American society. You’d think that a culture in which the most vibrant source of college protest centered around the defense of a non-existent right to not be offended, would be one where all other issues of national importance had been successfully addressed.

You’d never know there was an ongoing surveillance state panopticon systematically spying on everyone and trampling their constitutional rights. You’d never know that the U.S. government has special forces in 135 countries as it launches new wars almost every other week. You’d never know that the Federal Reserve, Washington D.C. and Wall Street had colluded to redirect all wealth into the hands of a few oligarchs via a centrally planned, criminally corrupt economic and financial system. You’d never know any of this, because America’s youth are focused on creating safe spaces for their precious feelings.

So this begs the question. Does intent matter? For all its failings, at least the 60’s protesters actually attempted to confront real issues, and sometimes even paid the highest price for doing so. Today’s college youth are not only not confronting any of the pressing issues of the day, but they aren’t risking anything at all, because they are the establishment.

For example, in almost all cases where coddled, thin-skinned students claim their feelings are hurt, school administrators bend over backwards to appease them, legality notwithstanding (see: Speechless – UCLA Engages in Absurd, Anti-Intellectual and Dangerous Attack on Campus Free Speech). In fact, if anyone is being discriminated against, it’s those rare and courageous professors who publicly stand up to this unconstitutional nonsense. Which brings me to today’s post about an ongoing incident at Yale.

As the always excellent Lenore Skenazy explains in her post: Mob of Yale Students Scream Profanities about Halloween Costume Insensitivity:

Halloween message signed by 13 college administrators asked Yale students to be sensitive about the costumes they chose, so as not to demean, alienate or “impact” any groups or individuals.

But when the associate Master (faculty head) of one of the dorms on campus, early childhood educator Erika Christakis, wrote her own note to students suggesting that maybe we don’t want the authorities deciding what costume is or is not sensitive enough, you’d think she’d endorsed genocide.

Students, hundreds of them, insisted they  longer felt “safe.” They protested. They screamed. They demanded her ouster,  even though in her letter, Christakis bent over backwards to say that she knows that the costume guidelines came from “a spirit of avoiding hurt and offense.” What’s more:

I laud those goals, in theory, as most of us do. But in practice, I wonder if we should reflect…on the consequences of an institutional (which is to say: bureaucratic and administrative) exercise of implied control over college students.

…As a former preschool teacher…it is hard for me to give credence to a claim that there is something objectionably “appropriative” about a blonde-haired child’s wanting to be Mulan for a day….

Even if we could agree on how to avoid offense – and I’ll note that no one around campus seems overly concerned about the offense taken by religiously conservative folks to skin-revealing costumes– I wonder, and I am not trying to be provocative: Is there no room anymore for a child or young person to be a little bit obnoxious… a little bit inappropriate or provocative or, yes, offensive?

Well said, but here’s what happened next…

Over 700 angry Yalies (my alma mater) signed a petition saying that Christakis’ “offensive” letter “trivializes the harm done by these tropes” (stereotypes) and “invalidated” those hurt.

As the days passed, the outrage mounted, a until a mob surrounded Christakis’ husband, the sociologist/doctor/professor Nicholas. He is seen in this video being screamed at by a student swearing at him and insisting he and his wife step down, because their job is not to create an intellectual space, but a “safe space” for students.

Watch the video:

Did you hear that? She claimed, in a completely unhinged rant, college “is not about creating an intellectual space.”

I have a two week year old infant at home, and I’ve yet to see him throw a temper tantrum anywhere in the ballpark of that student’s performance. Which confirms my belief, that my new role as father is the most important job I’ve ever taken on in my life, and one I take very seriously.

As such I want to leave you with the following question:

With students being coddled in a fantasy world of “safe spaces” and fear of “micro-aggressions,” can we really expect them to grow up to be adults capable of confronting real issues of money, power and imperial aggression?

Equality is a bitch.

Their solution to world population is to eliminate the urge to breed, and where ineffective, substitute pornography and abortion.

Their solution to war is to emasculate men and feminize them where possible, and when not, engage willing soldiers in a continual stream of losing conflicts, while using our press to demonize those who might actually be effective in their roles and impose the threat of imminent prosecution for attempting to win in battle.

We are looking more and more like a herd of cattle everyday, which should please a fair number of people.

I don't have the desire to type out a long essay right now, so let me just cut to the chase, Mike Krieger. Here's what fucking happened.

1. If making progress against racial segregation is the best you can claim for the '60s protests, then their so-called highest achievement has been a net negative for society. We went from the relative stability and security of segregation (under which whites and blacks achieved the highest relative standard of living ever known) to now, after spending $22 trillion on welfare, having nothing but trouble from blacks ever since. So thanks a lot for that one, Messrs. Haight and Ashbury.

2. Those '60s protesters whom you lionize are now themselves the establishment who continue to engineer, manufacture, and promote all the PC horseshit infecting college campuses today. The kids themselves have very little to do with it; they merely grew up with it and of course they're going to see it as normal until reality smacks them upside the head.

3. Starting in the '60s and continuing up through the present day, there are just way too many kids in college in the first place and way too much slush money flowing through the educational system. When you take a bunch of middle-intellect 20-year olds who can't really benefit from a higher education anyway, and place them in a lax academic environment of rampant grade inflation and PC garbage, while at the same time alleviating them of the necessity to earn a living by throwing gobs of loaned money at them, you're going to get a raucous crowd of dissolutes who have little to do but vent their energies and exalt their egos against a poorly understood "system."

Sun, 11/08/2015 - 21:28 | 6765727 GooseShtepping Moron
GooseShtepping Moron's picture

And let me add one addendum if I may. Everybody, including the youth, are responsible for their own behavior and must ultimately take their education into their own hands. However, one does not expect to find wise heads on young shoulders, either. If a 20-year old has a head full of trash, the first question to ask is "who put it there." If the same person is utterly lacking in virtue, the appropriate question is "who raised them."

There's been plenty of student protest towards Wall Street and corrupt US government over the last 10 years, it's just been ridiculed across the media and here on ZH for not having "clear goals"...well the student rebellions of the 60's had very clear goal, and after they were crushed by Nixon and other conservative ding-dongs, we managed to drag out Vietnam for many years longer than anyone had dared imagine.

Yes, this newest generation of students has some hyper senstive PC rules they are playing by, but do you really think if they were protesting more as you hoped, they would be protesting for the bizarre hodgepodge of libertarian solutions that someone like Mike Kreiger fantasizes about.

Everyone can state the problem on this site, plenty of opinions, very few solutions beyond, guns/coins...The Fed, Crony-Capitalists, Petro-Dollar, Military-Industrial Complex, Peak-Cheap-Oil, blah, blahetc, etc, but screaming about PC Millenials is pissing in the wind.

No they aren't prepared for the piece of Sh$t system left to them, but neither were you, smart-guys

Few people went to college 50 years ago and they tended to be exceptionally bright people. The protests of that era, however, had no effect. I was there...the government totally ignored the protests notwithstanding that they were probably the largest, most violent protests in history.

A majority now go to college and they tend to be unexceptional in the main, simply because the average person is average, i.e., not exceptionally bright. Not protesting is, however, a smart move....total waste of time that only encourages the people in power to think they're relevant.

Failed government is not germane to the lives of ordinary people.

Ignore the government and move on. Stop waiting for government to save you. Stop waiting for elections or whatever. Stop helping. Get a life.

Honestly, do you think they believe this shit?  I don't ... at least not too many of them.  It's an attention-getting device that gets kudos from peers and profs.  Somehow, pretending to be oh-so-sensitive and PC gives a student a moral sheen, one that needs frequent polishing.

Look, they're bright enough to know how to milk the system, and deluded enough to think they're doing the right thing.

Some do it out of sheer cynicism.  Most do it out of horizontal pressure.  These kids are the product of schools that stress conformity.  They sit and learn in groups -- no more desks and teachers at the board.  They play and have "hands-on" experiences instead of thinking for themselves, quietly.  They're not given time to think.  Just think.  Busy work fills the hours.  Their stupid cell phones fill the minutes.

Exactly. As parents today. we're expected to sheild our little special snowflakes from any possible hazard or adversity.  Like parents sitting at the school bus stop, in their own driveway, with the car idling, so junior doesn't have to stand outside in the hot/cold/rain/snow for a few minutes.

Mom and dad doing junior's homework for him. Complaining to the teacher and blaming the school when junior fucks up. Making junior do chores is now seen as child abuse. Corporal punishment? Want to end up with your kid getting buggered in a foster home, guns taken away, and at the mercy of the DSS/CPS cuntocracy?

This country is now completely and totally fucked. It needs to collapse. The culling, while painful for some, will be necessary due to the fact that we have allowed a huge number of humans to grow to adult hood, who 100 years ago, would have gotten lost finding the outhouse and froze to death.

Now those people are not only breeding, they're in charge.

Again, this shit needs to collapse if we want any hope of a decent future for white children.

Confession: I'm a Yale alum (84').

Let me tell you that a few of us, anyway, left the university more set in our political beliefs than before we matriculated.  Try as they did to mold me into a wee leftist, I graduated a confirmed libertarian with guns, God, marriage and kids.  Of course, to get out of there intact, I had to be a helluva lot better than my confreres.  Pressure to conform to the prevailing ideology was intense, particularly in grad school.

And, my dear, I am not a cunt ... though I have one.

My college turned its English 101 program into 'Diversity 101', then proceeded to make everyone who didnt get a '5' on the AP exam take it.  I appreciated the big dicks described in Gabriel Garcia Marquez oeuvre, Tony Kushner's queer characters dying of AIDS, and Amy Tan's 'Joy Luck Club'.  I'm sure 200 years from now, these great authors will be talked about as much as Shakespeare and Chaucer.  Perfect for an english survey course.  I review that course with a perfect '10 rainbows of diverse fruit flavor'.  Definately worth its part of the $50,000 tuition for that year.

UK has same problem (obviously)

Nigel Farage gets abuse.

Germaine Greer (apparently someone important in the previous feminist movement) was banned from giving a speech at a university because some student 'signed a petition' (they literally 'clicked' and had done some activism) to say they didn't want her talking because she didn't respect transgender rights... The reason for this... She doesn't think a man who gives himself hormones and surgery is a woman.

Julie Bindel, a feminist was prevented from giving a speech entitled 'Does feminism have a problem with free speech'.

I think it has come about since media has given women a great deal of power from the 'sexual' angle.

Since when is it anyone elses responsibility to create someone elses personal cozy home space, is what I want to know.  These SJWs/PCs were raised by socialist libtards, always on the verge of losing complete control over absolutely nothing.  They are too scared to really do anything about their real problems so they create problems no matter how petty or pious they may be and run with it.  Their kids see this and they don't even need problems they can't deal with to resort to these types of behaviors, that's just how they were raised.

I think this is pretty dangerous behavior, in that in the next 20 or 30 years the internet could be completely controlled, you type a possible insult into a box and your eye scanner or facial recognition is shut down for the next three months for your "offense"  no more internet for you.  Or when we all get RFIDs implanted and your cash etc is on there and that crazy girl becomes president because she went to yale, you wear a cowboy costume on halloween and she shuts down your access to money for the next 30 days.

Not only that, but it is this attitude that causes the people to question one another rather than those that rule them, which is mighty convienient for the rulers, they can just do whatever they want without question and be reassured that the 99% libtard population will just keep infighting and not notice a thing they are doing.

It's also a very selfish and limited point of view to have, like that of a five year old, where you don't really realize that there is much more to the world than yourself and immediate family.  Which is destructive to the overall fabric of any society.

LIke they say divide and conquer and we are sure doing a great job of it to ourselves........ugh!

I don't know how or why but I deal with a lot of college kids.

I rent to a lot of college age people.

When I can and it makes sense I'll offer them work or shoot the shit about life and the universe and everything.

This generation are truly children lost in a wilderness.

Firstly, I have not encountered so many adults (physically not mentally) that cannot drive car, nor have the interest or will.

I am not talking about hippie eco grunge characters with a misplaced sense of moral outrage. I'm talking about lazy and stupid people with zero will to explore or improve their lives.

This is not about an 18 year old whose family was too poor to have a second sacred car.  This is 24 year old "men" that call their moms to go to the grocery store.

Secondly, if you take away these people's phones they cannot function - as in read a map, entertain themselves, converse with other people or otherwise function in society. At first it was funny.  The it was weird. Now its truly frightening.

Thirdly, knowledge and skills - there are none. From cooking to basic working knowledge of WW2, or how to turn a check into money it's all a mystery to be solved by someone else. Beyond these trivial statements you can actually see the biologic de-generation of these young people thanks to the Public Education System. In rendering their rental applications, first they cannot understand how to fill these things out, but more importantly the penmanship on a 20 something looks like a 6 year old child. The sizing and spacing of printed letters (they don't teach cursive anymore) on paper applications clearly shows a damaged motor reflex system and dull eye coordination from years of mental neglect - all those Disney movies played over and over in tiny rooms.

When I see these bewildered infants babbling on TV for their feelings and rights just understand that this is what elites want out of Amerika - sheep to sheer.

When looking at this backlash and whole trends with the usual image of a pendulum.

But I think a better way of looking at this back and forth progression of things, would be an ariel view of a river.  It starts to bend, then keeps bending until it is going in the opposite direction, then a channel is cut thru and by passes that whole meandering curve and turns it into an oxbow lake,  cut off, the river not following that course anylonger.

I think the whole PC thing is ending, and realism is taking hold.  (the channel has been cut) In a period of economic strife,  the PC thing will be shed with the shifting of Maslow's needs.

Exactly. Feminism only exists because men allow it to exist. Affirmative action only exists because white men created the idea. Slavery ended on this continent (but not in Africa or the middle east) because of the altruism of white men (except for the fact that all productive people are now enslaved by the government to pay for the breeding of non-productive people).

When it all goes to shit, the feminists will be the first ones begging for protection. When I see short colored hair, face piercings, tattoos, and lard asses, I'm turning away.

You got a two year old?

As a stay at home Dad to a 9 and 12 year old (until a month ago I used to call them 9-11) and a wife who works but is jealous that i am at home with them. my first advice is this:

Build yourself a garden - a veg and fruit garden. You have the opportunity to reclaim the home space. Women who have been indoctrinated with decades of feminist shit will realise that the home space is where it's at. you can be a gardener, cook, a teacher and a healer.

Gardener - the kids get to see directly from where their food comes from.

Cook - you learn to cook the veg and fruit in season.

Teacher - yes they go to normal schools but you can teach them to think (Google the Trivium)

Healer - no need for fitness centres outside of the home - you can heal most stuff at home if you are strong and fit. I practidse Qi Gong (Taoist Yoga) every morning.

And most importantly - get off the sugar!

Don't worry, one of the fall outs of this Reaganomics age now ending will be a return to youth activism when the penny drops in first world. We are reaping what we have sown over the past 50 years.

People only wake up when they get a wake up call which is insistent. Then, in the 60s,  it was based on college education and a liberal mindset fed on the notion of progress bequeathed by FDR and the great generation. Today its based on a politically active Net world. That liberal mindset died brutally when they killed JFK.

But  the new age won't be aligned to Libertarian BS; all false nosed. it will be more on the other side of the aisle.

Libertarianism as expressed in the US is now on the wrong side of History. It believes in a false God, free handed, and is in total denial about the causality of Pax Americana's morph into evil imperial NWO. Free handed markets are like Obscurantist constructs : God is used for political purposes which make his dogma the opposite of what he was supposed to incarnate. Reaganomics made a 15 % ROE after tax the ONLy rule for corporate existence, obliterating the social contract on which democracy is based ! Chicago school mantra!

Machiavelli's prince reigns in his place saying "read my lips" (don't look at what I do). Thats what Reagan and Maggie did; they preached freedom and installed elitist totalitarian rule.

Theocracy and Politics have always gone hand in hand and Politics have always checkmated the theological construct. "The road to Serfdom" theocracy led to HFT controlled toxic asset markets !

Only empirically rooted Philosophy can solve man's temporal conundrums based on DOUBT and primacy of fact under law and separation of powers. All of which implies in our times a system of governance of, for and by the people. As for the everafter its just a matter of personal belief systems, out of the realm of the collaborative commons we call state politics.

Not an inverted totalitarian society which feeds on rivers of innocent blood to impose its exceptionalism. Reagan and consorts built the Clash of civilization meme seeing that "the end of history" did not fit their necessity to create a bogey man devil called "rogue states" now "terrorism". All theocratic constructs NEED a devil to impose its DOXA ! Thats the first rule in a controlled big brother state. We are there now, just like when the Popes ruled  the Crusader or Charles V the universal empire of Conquistador with a Jesuit on his back. In such types of governance truth is based not on affirmation of what we do but on rejection of the "other". Its a social order based on EXCLUSION, which makes freedom of opinion a CRIME, like the Inquisition was.

When you don't want to understand causality you end up defending the indefensible.

Fortunately today all of humanity now has theoretical access to the collaborative commons via the Net.

The way to go as the universal Net is the expression today of the printing press of the Renaissance age. Lets keep it freely accessible.

Laughable, coming from the genesis of the 60’s spoiled brats, the hippychicks and long-haired freaks.

The only reason that demonstration and resistance seems memorable, was because it now seems to be honourable, and hence bestows this honour on those individuals.

It doesn’t.

All that free thinking, and forward thought, liberalism, was just petulant, selfish behaviour, the ideology of youth.

And it just flourished.

Whether these children in the 60’s were right or wrong, they were the wrong ones to do step up.

They were essentially children. They knew nothing. Remember Dr. Spock?

No. Not that one. The real one.

“Don’t hit your child.” and it took off in the 50’s.

Spoiled. Rotten. Brats.

Then, empowered by their own power and the win, these 60’s freaks just expanded.

They moved off the campuses into bureaucracies and businesses, while the real zealots stayed to finish what they started, on the campuses of the universities, fostering more of their own.

Fueled by the cultural marxism of the day, it morphed into the disaster of modern feminism—Know any men? How’re they doing in their relationships? And boys in school?—and then to the PC tyranny that we see before us. Add in the self-esteem movement and it’s a recipe for social destruction.

They wanted a revolution, but had nothing to replace what they revolted against, with.

And now all the little darlings are upset because they don’t want to be offended, to be upset.

Remember the Simpson’s episode from Season 5, ‘Bart’s Inner Child’.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bart%27s_Inner_Child

We all laughed. Well, you did, I didn’t. It’s a must see, and it’s eerie prognostications from the early 90’s is like a road map for what’s happening, and going to happen.

The question one must ask is, “Where and when will this all stop? When will ‘enough’ be enough?”

And the answer is always, “It will never be enough.”

Watch this morph into a Robspierrian nightmare, moving from this media/mob rules, to literally, stringing up people in the streets in a few years.

Watch for this woman, unhinged as she is, to become a student leader. If you do not follow her, fine, but don’t get in her way, as she’ll bring hell down upon you.

We can only hope that the ultimate and only end will come quickly enough to burn itself out early, instead of our whole society, as they will, they must, eventually turn on each other, as they have always done.

We’re going to learn all the old lessons, all over again.

Or not.
