Krugman Doesn't Understand Why "Darkness Is Spreading Over Part Of Our Society"
A rather surprising Op-Ed by none other than Paul Krugman, first posted in The New York Times,
Despair, American Style
A couple of weeks ago President Obama mocked Republicans who are “down on America,” and reinforced his message by doing a pretty good Grumpy Cat impression. He had a point: With job growth at rates not seen since the 1990s, with the percentage of Americans covered by health insurance hitting record highs, the doom-and-gloom predictions of his political enemies look ever more at odds with reality.
Yet there is a darkness spreading over part of our society. And we don’t really understand why.
There has been a lot of comment, and rightly so, over a new paper by the economists Angus Deaton (who just won a Nobel) and Anne Case, showing that mortality among middle-aged white Americans has been rising since 1999. This deterioration took place while death rates were falling steadily both in other countries and among other groups in our own nation.
Even more striking are the proximate causes of rising mortality. Basically, white Americans are, in increasing numbers, killing themselves, directly or indirectly. Suicide is way up, and so are deaths from drug poisoning and the chronic liver disease that excessive drinking can cause. We’ve seen this kind of thing in other times and places – for example, in the plunging life expectancy that afflicted Russia after the fall of Communism. But it’s a shock to see it, even in an attenuated form, in America.
Yet the Deaton-Case findings fit into a well-established pattern. There have been a number of studies showing that life expectancy for less-educated whites is falling across much of the nation. Rising suicides and overuse of opioids are known problems. And while popular culture may focus more on meth than on prescription painkillers or good old alcohol, it’s not really news that there’s a drug problem in the heartland.
But what’s causing this epidemic of self-destructive behavior?
If you believe the usual suspects on the right, it’s all the fault of liberals. Generous social programs, they insist, have created a culture of dependency and despair, while secular humanists have undermined traditional values. But (surprise!) this view is very much at odds with the evidence.
For one thing, rising mortality is a uniquely American phenomenon – yet America has both a much weaker welfare state and a much stronger role for traditional religion and values than any other advanced country. Sweden gives its poor far more aid than we do, and a majority of Swedish children are now born out of wedlock, yet Sweden’s middle-aged mortality rate is only half of white America’s.
You see a somewhat similar pattern across regions within the United States. Life expectancy is high and rising in the Northeast and California, where social benefits are highest and traditional values weakest. Meanwhile, low and stagnant or declining life expectancy is concentrated in the Bible Belt.
What about a materialist explanation? Is rising mortality a consequence of rising inequality and the hollowing out of the middle class?
Well, it’s not that simple. We are, after all, talking about the consequences of behavior, and culture clearly matters a great deal. Most notably, Hispanic Americans are considerably poorer than whites, but have much lower mortality. It’s probably worth noting, in this context, that international comparisons consistently find that Latin Americans have higher subjective well-being than you would expect, given their incomes.
So what is going on? In a recent interview Mr. Deaton suggested that middle-aged whites have “lost the narrative of their lives.” That is, their economic setbacks have hit hard because they expected better. Or to put it a bit differently, we’re looking at people who were raised to believe in the American Dream, and are coping badly with its failure to come true.
That sounds like a plausible hypothesis to me, but the truth is that we don’t really know why despair appears to be spreading across Middle America. But it clearly is, with troubling consequences for our society as a whole.
In particular, I know I’m not the only observer who sees a link between the despair reflected in those mortality numbers and the volatility of right-wing politics. Some people who feel left behind by the American story turn self-destructive; others turn on the elites they feel have betrayed them. No, deporting immigrants and wearing baseball caps bearing slogans won’t solve their problems, but neither will cutting taxes on capital gains. So you can understand why some voters have rallied around politicians who at least seem to feel their pain.
At this point you probably expect me to offer a solution. But while universal health care, higher minimum wages, aid to education, and so on would do a lot to help Americans in trouble, I’m not sure whether they’re enough to cure existential despair.

These Ivory tower elites make statements like this that are at best half truths at worst outright lies there are still 30million Americans without insurance but now they owe the IRS a penalty while those with coverage are seeing their premiums soar to where they are considering just paying the penalty as far as the jobs BS from the BLS the jobs growth is in low paying crap jobs - just look at median household income since the 1970's for the 99% If these clowns and the MSM continue saying shyte without challenge the rot and cancer will continue to kill slowly as the sheeple read and hope. the real problem goes unrecognized and unsolved from lack of "outrage"
So here's how it is. I am an unfortunate member of that demographic. I have never taken a dime from the system and pay an effective tax rate approaching 50%, most of which goes to either the MIC so that our heroes can retire at 45 or to various ballooning social service budgets for the needy which isn't me appararently. I toddle off to work every day and work literally as a slave 50% of the day for the benefit of others. As I do this I am told by my government, the media and society that I am a racist, mysoginist with no particular value at best and at worst a threat to society. So I'm basically working like a dog for people that despise me with a gun held to my head by my own government in an environment where tomorrow is likely to be worse than today. Gee, why the long face?
Well said. We live in a country that taxes the heck out of you if you work, punishes you for saving (zero interest, reduced entitlement payments, threats of negative interest rates), forces you to buy a healthcare plan that generously allows you to spend about $12,000 before you get a dime from it, is obsessed with raising the cost of living and has defined 2% inflation on a rigged measure as the new stable money, has put interest rates so low that prices of housing and education are beyond reach. Prices are so high for the essentials, that most are now debt slaves to their homes, cars, educations, etc. The system bleeds you of tens of thousands of dollars a year before you even buy food and clothing.
You are completely right and I feel the same way. Every Monday I drag myself out of bed at 6am to work so everyone else can live at my expense.
It's encouraging to see so many posts from people that recognize Krugman as a socialist Neo-Keynesian charlatan.

The use of that name is a violation of a trademark.
It has nothing to do with the Noble committee... although those people are a joke as well.
It's the Swedish central bank (Riksbank) funding the prize. Nobel would most likely have shot the committee if he'd thought they'd include economics as a science. The real name is something like "The Riksbank prize for economics in memory of Alfred Nobel".

It's not so much that they have lost the narrative, but that they can't/won't swallow the narrative presented to them. Moreover, having the capacity to distil the narrative suitably enough to realize its inherent absurdity, i.e. being totally cognisant of what it is they are meant to be swallowing...there is the grounds for your existential timebomb. More succinctly; they see the system, they see the lies, greed, filth, absurdity and injustices stacking up like Jenga blocks, and it depresses the fuck clean out of em.
They have been living in a Disney bubble and wrapped in cotton wool all their lives, when they finally meet the wizard they shit their pants.
So, before 2007, you really did live the American dream. Not the one the NYC elites are accustomed to, rather the one where you and your wife worked, made enough to live in a modest house, give your kids eveything you didn't have growing up, earn a steadily increasing wage or so it seemed with those home equity loans that everybody was doing at the time, had a nice nest egg in your 401k, maybe didn't go to church much but believed in Christian values and the work ethic, the future looked bright, sure the joints were going from years of physical labor but you were going to be able to retire, have enough for that bass boat and occassional green fees, travel, not in the luxury style of those NYC elites but it still would be ok at the Hampton Inn seeing the sights in Branson or going to the NASCAR races and then,
You and or your wife lose your job(s) or are asked to retire early or have your salary cut or are put on part time status. You have to cash in your 401k savings to make ends meet, sell your stock investments at the low for the same reasons, your house value plummets putting you under water but you cannot make the mortgage payments and the banks come calling, you have to provide for your adult child who moves back in because they too lost their job, even after the Great Recession subsided, you still have to lend some support to your adult children who do not make enough on their own to survive. When you find a new job the pay is far less than you made before. If you are blue collar you are pretty washed up by now with aches and pains and you lost a half decade of your good years to unemployment.
Your expectations, valid expectations, have been taken away. You now rent, live paycheck to paycheck without any foreseeable way to earn enough to retire with much beyond social security. Or perhaps you had enough physical ailments that you could go the disability route, show the Doc an MRI, get your Oxy scripts and collect on the dole, only to spiral downward from the malaise and boredom, but hey at least now they have come out with another drug for your constipation. The future is dim and there is no avenue to return to the highway of middle class prosperity.
You resent like hell that the NYC elites who broke the economy, who sold you the false prosperity of home equity loans, who let you move up into a bigger house than you really could afford with zero percent down sub prime loans, continued to get their outlandish bonus checks, checks that were essentially paid for by the federal government. You resent that prices of the things you need, your food, rent, gas (until recently), health care continuously increase a rates greater than those official hedonically adjusted statistics. You read about the crony capitalism and the prosperity enjoyed by just a few - bankers, CEOs and government officials who seemingly accrue mass wealth out of thin air. You see that your government is increasingly corrupted. Learn that your Congress was using insider information and their daily talking points to disrupt and day trade the markets back when you had to sell your stocks at great loss for fear you would lose even more. You see that crony capitalism is rampant with corporations getting ever larger and government officials ever wealthier either while in business or through the revolving door process after having worked say at the FDA and allowed pharma to increase the cost of your meds by ten fold.
Now your very values are under assault. "You didn't earn that, make that, the government did", You are a privledged white male - ironicaly being told so by some NYC liberal elitist who is assuaging his own guilt for making it rich off of the rigged system, your religous traditions are under assault, even your kids are now blaming your generation for everything wrong with the economy today - when again the blame more appropriately lies with the NYC elites who hired the lobbysts, rigged the system and amassed greater wealth through even the worst of times.
Your President hates you, you are barraged daily by a media that holds you and your values in great contempt as do the NYC elites and their west coast counterparts who feel that denigrating your values and lifestyle is fair game applying the same prejudice that they accuse you of engaging in.
Your America that you were taught was the greatest success story of all nations is now despised by those same elites who profitted off of its wealth for personal gain. No longer did America do good things rather our fore fathers were racist murderers, the wars we fought in the past where we thought the causes were just are now cast as evil aggressions, our rural or suburban lifestyles are attacked as if we all can afford to or want to live in a high rise urban apartment. Even our cars and pick up trucks are under attack. While we may or may not believe in global warming we have enough common sense to understand that it has become the new religion of the elites and most of its "horrific" consequences are fabricated to achieve greater progressive goals of government control and removal of individualism.
So, yeah, we just might be a little sad about things.

Can't blame NYC elites for bad choices a home owner makes. When most all of my friends were "upgrading" to mcmansions (and have since lost them )... my X and I happily stayed put in our little Cape on a few acres. Low payments, low risk, low stress.
The average Joe, the ones out there who are so depressed, more so than the rest of us, are not financial wizards. We may have paid 20% down and questioned the wisdom of borowing against our house to pay for that cruise, but many are not sophisticated to even understand the condequences of these actions. You have every right to disagree, but in my opinion, to blame the average Joe who succumbed to one of the daily junk mailings to "just sign here and get $50,000 in cash back" is exactly the rationalization of the bankers for why it is not their fault. I applaud you for having the wisdom not to have done this and neither did I, but there were millions of far less math savvy folks out there who did and who simply did not understand the consequences. So blame them for being regular folk? I blame the banks and the bought off government regulators who allowed this to happen. Such as the federal regulators who forbade State Attorney Generals from cracking down on bad mortgage products because....banks.

I don't even give a shadow of a fuck any longer. It all started about seven years ago when the gay lawn jockey started his job of destroying what was left of our country/economy that the previous criminal buffoons had not managed to get to in the sixteen years they were on the 'job'. I got laid off from my last job a little over three years ago, and pretty much gave up looking for work about a year ago. I turned 62 yesterday and feel that despite everything, I have had a pretty good run, am at peace, and am ready to go; to that end I already have a custom "go bag" (in this case a hood with a hose attached to a Helium cylinder)so that when a couple of other things in my life happen, I will be ready to step off of this hellish rock, which anymore feels like a giant camp in *hell* to me.
If you are 62 get the SS. If you find work before 66 there are rules about how much you can earn without a penalty. Some people work off the books to get around the limits. The SS plus a job you actually enjoy for a change is worthwhile. Don't let them get to you. Changes are coming.

It has to be something "else" or "real" that you've postponed to do because you "had to put food on the table". Why not do it now ?
Do you remember when we used to have support groups? When there was a disaster in any part of the world, the local radio, etc. would get a collection of storable food, clothing, etc. and everyone would contribute and those donations would be sent to the affected area.
There used to be men's clubs that supported men in their hour of need, like the Elks Lodge and The Lion's Club.
People used to trust their churches and there was always help available there.
Now, we are not allowed to contribute, because it creates too much chaos at the disaster sites. Instead we're told to each contribute $10 via our telephones to the Red Cross, which never distributes the aid. When people went to help the victims of Katrina, FEMA sent them away while running endless stories blaming the victims.
I say reach out to others like you and let's start over again. There have to be other people in your situation that you can find online, if not in your neighborhood.

At the risk of having several down arrows, the reason there is so much despair is because we put our faith in the world instead of the Almighty. By definition, man is broken and the world with it. So if we expect contentment to emanate from the world, we are fools. It cannot happen.

Look at the nature of this "job growth", and who is getting these these jobs - part-time service sector jobs largely being filled by first-gen immigrants, so whitey's economic depression is hardly a mystery. Krugman is willfully ignorant of the stagnation/decline occuring in fly-over country... he neither cares about nor understands middle america, this much is obvious.

A whopping 6-8million additional americans now have health insurance coverage - far below the impact hoped-for w/ ACA.... and the quality of coverage has diminished while the out-of-pocket costs have skyrocketed. Krugman insists on substituting false political narratives for economic reality, and the reality is that the VAST majority of americans now pay more for less healthcare/coverage. Again, Krugman is willfully ignorant of the key facts that utterly destroy his flimsy narrative.
bottom line: Krugman's "reality" is a theoretical fiction, which is exactly what one should expect from a limo-riding academic who has literally NOTHING in common with the average american experience/culture. The shame is that Krugman HAS ZERO INTEREST in understanding average americans or their economic predictament. Rather, PK does everything he can to remain sealed in the MSM/Manhattan/Beltway bubble. Thus, clowns like PK can't understand why Breitbart/Drudge are displacing the statist legacy media gravytrain that he's been riding for years...

Lost the narrative to their lives is exactly right. Economic savings and investment are rendered ineffectual. Productivity is punished and disparaged. Clubby political connections monopolize the paths to success. Redistribution, equality, and social justice are rewarded and trumpeted.
When natural psychological reward mechanisms of productive growth and accomplishment are killed in the cradle, people are left with nothing to live for but emotional jolts from drugs, cheap thrill entertainment, video games, and social media upvotes. No trailblazing creative fulfillment. No progressive escalating material validation of personal productivity stemming from investment, hard work, fairness, and delivering value.
All the healthy incentive mechanisms are broken or distorted. But they form the bedrock of a healthy human psyche. That general malaise ensues makes perfect sense to me.
Narrative is another word for lie. This is one of those post-modernist academic words that has been in vogue for a few years because it allows them to talk about the lies that compose the world for many people who haven't woken up yet without admitting that everything is a lie. Not that the academics in social sciences actually see reality, it's just that they love talking about everyone else's delusions but their own.
So when they say white men have "lost the narrative", it means that white men can no longer live in fantasyland because their supply of money has dried up. White men can no longer ignore the dead future that stares them in the face every day, And like Japan, where a whole generation has given up and become morose, white men are miserable in the US where they have lost the ability to control even a small part of their dwindling future.
But because this is still America and the American Spirit lies within us all, this isn't going to last forever. Sooner or later these papal missives from our beloved masters and their shills like Krugman will cause the anger to boil over and come what may, the current control freaks will be ousted one way or another. Over the weekend I was reading the blog from a liberal site about the goings on at Yale and the big Halloween controversy. Anyway, bloggers were actually stating (and believing) that hurtful speech is not protected by the 1st ammendment. I didn't post because there is no arguing with idiots but why the hell do you need an ammendment protecting speech if it only protects saying nice thing? WTF?

When the US banking system fails just like it did in Cypress things will get very difficult for those of the Obama Bin Laden ilk and all those who have gamed the system. The banks are already broke and have not really loaned money to anyone for the past decade other than for share buybacks and commodity speculations.
The share buybacks are about to end and commodity speculation has for all intents and purposes bankrupted every major bank in the US and world. There are a few who have gained dramatically from this process and those include the welfare class who now can control elections simply by voting for their benefits candidate; the illegal immigrant class that was allowed to destroy any hope of a middle class life for tens of millions; the greedy (5-6 ten million dollar homes is not enough) class who are the only class allowed to make money when every one else is barely surviving; and last but not least the Hillary and Pelosi class who serve in office and somehow wind up worth 10's of milliions.
My prediction is that when the banks fail, that is when the real violence will start. Since a reset of the kind needed for this system would never work from within, it must be done by violence from without.
A new constitution with some simple fixes such as balanced budgets, term limits, no more administrative regulations without congressional approval, state election of Congressman again so we have a republic, taxation of salaries of public servants after office to the tune of 90% above the medium, no participation of corporations in elections, no one of working age who gets welfare will have the right to vote unless and until they repay the benefits received, and a constitutional convention by the people every 25 years to reset things they deem fit to reset.
What you see right now with the system is that the powers to be know it is permanently broken and cannot be fixed but they are keeping the game going as long as possible because of the simple fact that their lives are at stake and they know it.

I'm calling BS on Krugman for two reasons.
First, I think life is much better today than it was 5, 10, 15 and 30 years ago. Going back further, I was less responsible for my own life's needs, but I know that were I responsible, I'd have still the same point of view. I've got things today, at much lower costs and higher availability, than I did back then. Let's revisit 1985, when I walked out of college. I didn't have a cellphone, let alone an iPhone. My TV was huge and cost twice as much as one today. I didn't have a computer and when I bought one in 1989, it cost $3,000 and was outdated 15 minutes after I bought it. Upgraded software made it obsolete by 1992.
Second, he generally makes up vague stories that fit data, rather than seeking cause and effect relationships.
Let's see how I lived in 1990 versus today:
Driving around Northern New Jersey in 1990, I got lost more than once, and I'm great with maps. Planning any trip required spending time figuring it out ahead of time, and usually wasted considerable gas stopping for directions. Not so much today with my iPhone.
I was eating macaroni and cheese more frequently than not, and not just because I was still on a lower tier salary. Meat was much more expensive and cooking it required time and resources which (as a single male) I didn't really care to invest in. If I wanted meat, I went out to eat - and that was expensive (the restaurant down the street had a $7 sirloin. Today it's $10. It's not a great cut, but it's not bad and it's still more affordable). Part of this was a single male lifestle choice. The other part was cost. I eat much better today because it's less expensive to eat better.
I had surgery on my feet and had to spend the night in the hospital. I then took 2 weeks off from work to recuperate. I had the same problem fixed again this past week, walked out of the ambulatory surgery center, and worked from home for 3 days before coming back into work this week. Advances in medicine are astounding. Oh yeah, that surgery cost me $1,300 back then, only $1,000 now (my costs for deductible and 20%).
It's not that things are worse today. It's that our expectations are outsized and unmet.
They are unmet because guys like Krugman are telling government to get more involved in our lives and limiting opportunity, productivity, and potential.

There really doesn't seem to be enough jobs. I worked in a factory in the engineering department for years. 20 years ago I made an observation. Manufacturing is automating everything. 10 years ago we put in a new product line with the whole department line being setup from top to bottom. In the past it would have required 40 to 50 people to staff the production. But in this new department everything that could be automated, was automated. Now for the same department it takes maybe 20 people to run the department all three shifts. A net loss of 20 to 30 jobs. This is happening all over the world in the quest ot lower costs and lower price and maximize profits. If you are manufacturing a product that is the target. Lower costs and increase profits. Nothing wrong with that. But I am looking at this and thinking "Is there going to be enough jobs for everyone?" If what I observed is true, then what is going to be the end game?
Good question. If everything needed to support the current population is done and there is no need for more jobs, what does that mean for the idea of jobs in the first place? Will the Protestant Work Ethic, which has been retuned into a slave morality, fade and be replaced?

I said it was time for me to bail and it is but as one who has spent the past several years metaphorically poking Krugman in the eye over on his own NYT blog, I think I know something about the neoliberal mindset. The irony is that I see the same sort of stuff here from the people whose views are superficially antithetical to those of the opposition.
Both sides have called me "detached from reality" because I force people to countenance their own freedom and personal power. The statists mock libertarians and blame free market conservative ideology for their plight while the anti-statists blame the state for their circumstances.

But who is following up with these facts to determine whether or not this is causing liver disease? The problem may be in the sources of these meds and the covering up by the medical community and FDA.
