Krugman Doesn't Understand Why "Darkness Is Spreading Over Part Of Our Society"

Tyler Durden's picture

A rather surprising Op-Ed by none other than Paul Krugman, first posted in The New York Times,

Despair, American Style

A couple of weeks ago President Obama mocked Republicans who are “down on America,” and reinforced his message by doing a pretty good Grumpy Cat impression. He had a point: With job growth at rates not seen since the 1990s, with the percentage of Americans covered by health insurance hitting record highs, the doom-and-gloom predictions of his political enemies look ever more at odds with reality.

Yet there is a darkness spreading over part of our society. And we don’t really understand why.

There has been a lot of comment, and rightly so, over a new paper by the economists Angus Deaton (who just won a Nobel) and Anne Case, showing that mortality among middle-aged white Americans has been rising since 1999. This deterioration took place while death rates were falling steadily both in other countries and among other groups in our own nation.

Even more striking are the proximate causes of rising mortality. Basically, white Americans are, in increasing numbers, killing themselves, directly or indirectly. Suicide is way up, and so are deaths from drug poisoning and the chronic liver disease that excessive drinking can cause. We’ve seen this kind of thing in other times and places – for example, in the plunging life expectancy that afflicted Russia after the fall of Communism. But it’s a shock to see it, even in an attenuated form, in America.

Yet the Deaton-Case findings fit into a well-established pattern. There have been a number of studies showing that life expectancy for less-educated whites is falling across much of the nation. Rising suicides and overuse of opioids are known problems. And while popular culture may focus more on meth than on prescription painkillers or good old alcohol, it’s not really news that there’s a drug problem in the heartland.

But what’s causing this epidemic of self-destructive behavior?

If you believe the usual suspects on the right, it’s all the fault of liberals. Generous social programs, they insist, have created a culture of dependency and despair, while secular humanists have undermined traditional values. But (surprise!) this view is very much at odds with the evidence.

For one thing, rising mortality is a uniquely American phenomenon – yet America has both a much weaker welfare state and a much stronger role for traditional religion and values than any other advanced country. Sweden gives its poor far more aid than we do, and a majority of Swedish children are now born out of wedlock, yet Sweden’s middle-aged mortality rate is only half of white America’s.

You see a somewhat similar pattern across regions within the United States. Life expectancy is high and rising in the Northeast and California, where social benefits are highest and traditional values weakest. Meanwhile, low and stagnant or declining life expectancy is concentrated in the Bible Belt.

What about a materialist explanation? Is rising mortality a consequence of rising inequality and the hollowing out of the middle class?

Well, it’s not that simple. We are, after all, talking about the consequences of behavior, and culture clearly matters a great deal. Most notably, Hispanic Americans are considerably poorer than whites, but have much lower mortality. It’s probably worth noting, in this context, that international comparisons consistently find that Latin Americans have higher subjective well-being than you would expect, given their incomes.

So what is going on? In a recent interview Mr. Deaton suggested that middle-aged whites have “lost the narrative of their lives.” That is, their economic setbacks have hit hard because they expected better. Or to put it a bit differently, we’re looking at people who were raised to believe in the American Dream, and are coping badly with its failure to come true.

That sounds like a plausible hypothesis to me, but the truth is that we don’t really know why despair appears to be spreading across Middle America. But it clearly is, with troubling consequences for our society as a whole.

In particular, I know I’m not the only observer who sees a link between the despair reflected in those mortality numbers and the volatility of right-wing politics. Some people who feel left behind by the American story turn self-destructive; others turn on the elites they feel have betrayed them. No, deporting immigrants and wearing baseball caps bearing slogans won’t solve their problems, but neither will cutting taxes on capital gains. So you can understand why some voters have rallied around politicians who at least seem to feel their pain.

At this point you probably expect me to offer a solution. But while universal health care, higher minimum wages, aid to education, and so on would do a lot to help Americans in trouble, I’m not sure whether they’re enough to cure existential despair.

*  *  *

[ZH: One can only assume Mr. Krugman's shocking honesty at the demise of The American Dream (and even more shockingly his - and his devout followers' - admission of an inability to fix it via fiscal and monetary policies) is a modest pitch for "stuff's bad and getting worse... but vote for the good guys and at least we can all get worst together, equally."]

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Krugman a middle aged white male?

Hmmm, he seems to be doing just fine. Maybe (if there is any merit to the "study"...which I doubt) REAL middle aged white males can't believe that all it takes to prosper in Krugman's world is to sell your soul to the devil like he did and are in despair.

Don't worry, they'll snap out of it and there will be hell to pay...Krugman.

This Jew uses lot of code in his writing as subtle clues to other folks that are "in the know.". "Secular humanists" means some very specific things to people in his social circles. Frankfurt school communists created the concept of "humanism" in the early 20th century. All of them are Jewish Zionists.

The rest of the article is just bragging about how their genocide campaign is going so well and how their new brown slaves ("Hispanics") are unaffected by the genocide propaganda targeted at whites and are happy with far less than whites, which is good because under the Jew world order beef will be a rare delicacy among the poor masses enjoyed only on holidays and otber special occasions. Tbey are already setting the table, so to speak, for that.

Isn't it ironic.

Most gun crime happens in places where guns are banned.

Hitler disarmed jews, and we know what happened then. Marx said: never be disarmed. I cite those examples as clear references for those who would be fooled again. My family were never fooled. We've been here since 1620.

Peace be with you, and side with the Constitution. Krugman imported alien ways which have failed, but his sort and BiBi hijacked the USG, and blackmailed or bribed some who defied them.

First, Krugman says this same sort of despair and darkness overtook Russia after the collapse of Krugmanism ... err umm, I mean corrupt socialism.

Then the idiot says the phenomenon is unique to the USA (which curiously enough is dying under the same corrupt socialism).

Having just connected the dots in his own writing, then inexplicably losing both dots and the connection in the subsequent paragraph -- this worthless bit of Nobel prize winning scum says he doesn't understand why its happening. People getting government subsidies are quite happy, its just those people who work for a living and pay taxes who are upset.

And then, just to prove that he can't do and also can't teach, this so-called professor blames the other side of the political aisle... like every other worthless political pundit.

Of course, most political pundits aren't committing fraud by falsely claiming to be "professors", and they don't get to force student loan debt onto captive "listeners".

Krugman should be indicted for underwriting fraudulent loans -- every single bit of student debt associated with him is not education, its lobbying.

WWI, the war to 'end all wars' as politicians claimed, said that self determination was the right of every land, and no more wars would be made.

Krugman is the enemy within, urging endless war for Israel, and debt slavery. His problem is that there is an ominous silence among those who are well able to defend themselves, and kill his freakery if necessary.

I didn't let my daughter take out a student loan because I don't want her tied to any political thing. 'The hand that gives is above the hand that takes.'

Crookman has lived his whole life as a tax funded sneaky arrogant putz, most liked by those who use him as a cheerleader for endless debt and endless war.

"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered...I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies... The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs." (Thomas Jefferson)

Krugman works for the private banks first, and no one else.

He should stop ruining my land, and make aliya to Israel which is gifted billions per year from my land, and refuses to make peace with the people it stole from, the Palestinians, although the USA people  wishe peace, and the UN wishes it so.

Ye gods, you people are insane.  Krugman is an academic who writes for laymen.  If he wrote out the technical equations he bases his articles on, none of you would understand a word of it.  You disagree with him politically because to a good extent you are hopelessly brainwashed by a pack of dead Austrian nobles who also wrote copiously for the express purpose of justifying their dominance over everyone who didn't have "von" in front of their names.  Krugman is obviously straying way out of his area of competence to write about non-parametric sciences such as politics and psychology. But as critics, the commenters here appear to lack competence in anything except the use of four-letter words.

It's better by far for you Angry White Males to turn your anger outward, than to fasten on yourselves and commit suicide by quick or slow means like so many of your desperate fellows.  But is it too much to ask that you choose your targets intelligently, and save your anger for the thieves and scoundrels (bankers, oligarchs, One-Percenters) who have actually destroyed your livelihoods, rather than the lackeys and pundits who serve them either as cheerleaders or "loyal opposition" like Krugman?  Killing the messengers avails you naught.  That's what they're there for -- to be open targets and draw fire.  Get your brains out of your asses, gentlemen, and go after the Masters.

I've read through a couple hundred comments.

1.  We seem to think that the economic and perhaps political life in America is headed for a ... collapse, revolution, other.  The "reset."

2.  We seem to know that the self-sufficient and self-starters will eventually win this collapse/revolution.

3.  Many seem to believe that guns will be involved, passively (deterrent) or actively (killing in self-defense or assassination).

4.  Some of us see a racial/religious/irrelegious undercurrent.

5.  Some of us are taking active steps to protect our own families with food stocks, homes in rural areas, chickens and farms, etc.

6.  Krugman (and other blinkered academics and many urbanites?) is an asshole.

My take on the article is that middle aged white men in the US have not adapted to the more socialist society they find themselves living in.  They were not brought up in this environment and it is an environment that conflicts with everything they understand.  Immigrants are coming from a society with little or no social safety net so a socialized America is a much better place than they left.  Young Americans have been raised in this socialized America so it is what they know.  The middle aged American males were told that they should be rowers and not riders during the prime of their life.  Receiving free shit makes them feel a failure whereas others feel better when receiving free shit.

The answer lies, simply, in a lack of peace and contentment. The American Dream has been replace with the Great American Chase. Chase for what, you migh ask? Well, that's a bit murky, but it's there. The constant striving, usually just for more. More of this, more of that, whatever. Bigger cars and houses, more clothes, latest electronics, every cable and internet bell and whistle.

Add to that the anger and meanspiritedness. Everyone is always angry, always a victim, always blaming someone else. Yes, that goes for you, too, Republicans. Jeez, a war on Christmas? Stop it. Grow up. And Democrats, you're no better. We are a country constantly at war for no damn reason, seeing enemies and potential enemies at home and abroad, and dammit, we are just never content.

Well, that goes for most of you. I am content, and no, I am not "wealthy." What a shallow, American way of defining contentment. Yes, the answer is simple. People are fed discontent all day long, and they eat it up, shit it out, and start all over again. Stop it, that's the answer. Stop striving. Stop chasing.

In every one of us a Light burns

A Light that pushes us to be better than what we are

A Light that pushes us towards perfection

The Light is the cause of happiness, love, and bliss

The Light is only contrasted by the Darkness

A Darkness which resides within each of us

The Darkness brings us down

And it seeks to extinguish the Light

The Darkness causes hatred, envy, and chaos

Where the Light is success, the Darkness is failure

Where the Light is freedom, the Darkness is imprisonment

Where the Light is satisfaction, the Darkness is remorse

Where the Light is forgiveness, the Darkness is blame

Where the Light is good, the Darkness is evil

Where the Light is God, the Darkness is Satan

And where the Light is serenity, the Darkness is frustration

And inside each of us the battle between Light and Darkness rages

Everything in life breathes both the Light and the Dark

Every action and every reaction in life is ruled by this clash

Every injustice and every act of morality

Every feeling of guilt and every sense of forgiveness

Both the Light and Darkness resides in each of us

The question is: Which are you allowing to control your life?

Paul "Crocodile Tears" Krugman is celebrating his side's impending victory over what he views as the eternal enemy; individual freedom.  Collectivists despise free people.

People like him, useful idiots, believe in -isms and think that salvation lies in their carefully controlled opposing sides coming to a final resolution.  There is never a resolution, only more slavery.  Krugman is too stupid to understand that his political philosophy has no bearing on the real world, it's all theater.

There are masters and slaves.  That's all.  Nothing else is real, nothing else matters.

When will justice be served? Who knows?

We have a world that despises liars which is why voting falls, and people get ready with their own kith and kin.

Federal Reserve for Dummies

Share with friends and family to raise awareness.

*********************************

In a nutshell, this is how the Ponzi scheme known as the Federal Reserve System operates;

"First, it is not "federal". It is a private corporation owned by a handful of individuals. It has been exempted from the Freedom Of Information Act and the identities of the owners of the Fed are, for the most part, a secret. "

Next, there aren't any "reserves" of money.

"Last, it is not a "system". It is a cartel of bankers who have been given an exclusive banking monopoly and the to power to "print" (i.e.: create) money. "

"The Federal Reserve Act was passed in 1913. This law took the power to print money away from the government (unconstitutionally, I might add) and gave it to the newly created Federal Reserve System which is actually a privately owned Central Bank.

"When the federal government needs more money than it can obtain through taxes or borrowing, it obtains the money from the Federal Reserve which is why it euphemistically referred to as the lender of last resort. The Fed will always lend ANY AMOUNT of money to the government because it can do so by simply "printing" the money. In reality, the Fed simply makes a bookkeeping entry crediting, for example, a trillion dollars to the government's checking account. This "printing" of money is actually a theft of money from American people because it dilutes the value and reduces the purchasing power of all previously existing currency. This is why something that could be purchased for $1 in 1913, now costs more than $50. "

"Prior to 1913, if the government needed additional money, it could simply print the money itself. Abraham Lincoln did this during the Civil War when "Greenbacks" were issued. These were simply promissory notes like today's Federal Reserve Notes that we think of as money. If you look at the top of any bill, you will see the words Federal Reserve Note. However, after the passage of the Federal Reserve Act, the government must now have a third party, the Fed, print the additional money it needs. This might not be such a horrible thing except for the fact that the government must now pay interest on this newly created money that it has borrowed from the Fed. In addition, this new money is the product of purchasing power that has been stolen from the people of the United States. So, in effect, the taxpayers must now pay interest on money that the Fed has stolen from them, and then loaned back to them. " But wait. It gets worse.

"After the government borrows a trillion dollars from the Fed, it writes checks and spends the money. The military gets paid, people receive their Social Security checks, and so forth. After people receive these checks from the government, they deposit them into their bank accounts. Let's say that someone receives a check for $1,000 from the government and deposits it into a savings account. Most people think that the bank will now have $1,000 (minus some percentage set aside for a reserve) that it can loan out. Wrong! Using the magic of something called Fractional Reserve Banking, the bank can loan out $9,000 for every $1,000 in deposits.

"Initially, the bank loans out $900 and holds $100 (10%) in reserve. However, the $900 that has been loaned out will ultimately be re-deposited into the banking system. When it is, the process will repeat itself with the bank loaning $810 and holding $90 (10%) in reserve. This process continues to repeat itself until the bank (i.e.: the banking system) has loaned out $9,000 for every $1,000 that was originally deposited. At this point, the bank (i.e.: banking system) is "loaned up" and must look elsewhere for additional money to loan. "

"To obtain additional money, the bank goes to the Federal Reserve's "Discount Window" and pledges the $9,000 in loans it has made as collateral to borrow money from the Fed. Based on this collateral, the Fed will lend an equal amount to the bank at the Federal Funds rate of 1 or 2% interest. The bank can now loan this money out at a higher rate of interest on loans made to consumers for purchases of cars, homes, credit cards, etc. "

"Okay, here's the 64 dollar question: Where do you think the Fed got this $9,000 to loan to the bank? "

"Yes, you guessed it. The Fed created/stole this money. Therefore, the money that you borrowed from the bank for the mortgage on your house is money that the Fed created/stole from the purchasing power of the American people. So, once again, you are paying interest on money that was stolen from you, and then loaned back to you. "

"You may ask how the Fed is able to do this. Let me remind you that the Fed has a monopoly on the banking system. This means that every check written by anyone for anything must "clear" through a federal reserve bank. Well, if someone theoretically owns ALL the banks, and they say a check is good, its' good because there isn't anyone to say otherwise. Moreover, under the Federal Reserve Act, this fraudulent Ponzi scheme is legal! "

"The bottom line is that for every trillion dollars the Federal Reserve steals from the purchasing power of the American people to loan to the government, it is able to steal/create an additional 9 trillion dollars that it will loan out to the American people through its' member banks. "

"As though all of this wasn't bad enough, I now have even worse news for you. When the Fed creates/steals $10 trillion and loans it out to the government and consumers, the loans must, of course, be paid back. Well, there's no problem paying back the $10 trillion. The same money that was created/stolen can be used to pay back the principle amount of the loans. But, what about the interest? No additional money has been created/stolen to pay the interest. Where does the money come from to pay the interest on the loans? "

"Think about that for a minute. If no additional money has been created/stolen to pay the interest, where will the money to pay this come from? "

"It will come from all of the real wealth that exists in the world. Can't make the payment on your car? Maybe you should sell your diamond ring. Can't make your mortgage payment? Maybe you should sell your car and use the money to pay your mortgage. You already sold your car? No problem. The bank will be happy to take your house away from you. "

"Government can't pay the interest on the national debt? Well, maybe it will have to raise taxes. Can't raise taxes? No problem. The Fed will be happy to loan more money to the government that it will create/steal from the American people.

"Are you starting to see the big picture? Eventually, the handful of people who own the Federal Reserve, will own everything! And, they will accomplish this by charging us interest on loans made to us with money they stole from us! THIS is the scandal. THIS is what they don't want the people to know. "

"As I said above, the Federal Reserve is actually a privately owned Central Bank. There are Central Banks in other countries around the world. And, when countries go to war, they are desperate to borrow whatever amount of money it takes to fight the war. The vast sums required to fight a war are impossible to obtain through taxes or borrowing. Therefore, each country borrows what it needs from its' Central Bank. And, the dirty little secret is that, usually, the winner of the war agrees to pay back the money loaned to the loser by the loser's Central Bank. "

"Hmmm. Do you think that there might be some common ownership of the different Central Banks? Could it be that the same bankers are financing both sides of a war? Hmmm. Could these bankers actually be involved in instigating these wars? Was Viet Nam really necessary? Are the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan really necessary? A Republican President got us into these wars and a Democratic President, who promised while campaigning that he would begin to bring the troops home IMMEDIATELY after he was elected, is keeping these wars going. Is it possible that someone else is calling the shots? Why was Tim Geitner, the former President of the New York Federal Reserve Bank selected as Secretary of the Treasury? If this isn't putting the fox in charge of the chicken coop, I don't know what is. "

"With just the little information you now have, you can begin to understand why you are hearing prominent individuals (including President Bush, Sr.) use the term "New World Order". The "new world order" means a one world government with a Central Bank Of The World and a cashless society. If this happens, the owners of the Central Bank will be the ruling elite of the world, everyone else will be impoverished, and there will be nowhere to escape to. "

"So, there you have it - the Federal Reserve in a nutshell. And, if this information is new to you, you must surely be thinking that I am some kind of nut. Well, read Ron Paul's book, read Griffin's book, watch The Money Masters, and get The Red Pill Project DVD from RealityZone.com. These are not the only sources of information on this topic. There are other books and, of course, information on the web. Read the books and watch the videos. Then, decide for yourself. However, I should caution you that all this stuff is extremely well documented. So, if what I have described to you above is something that you would rather not believe, don't go any further because, if you look into this, you will find that what I have told youi is true. And, frankly, knowing that this is true is rather unnerving."

Crookman's lot are not white. They are Ashkenazi, Khazar. Their hatred for white northerners and black people is obvious by their deeds. Ignore their snivelling words; their lies; their attempt to divide and rule.

They love money; they are the only ethnic group allowed to be narrowly tribalist, whilst telling everyone else something else.

There are no christians,  blacks or other ethnic groups in the Knesset. They call it a 'jewish state',Israhell which commits genocide, using our money, our military in the Middle East for the Yinon Plan, 'Greater Israel', and their ISIS.

That tells us that they lie to us.

Their sacred prayer once a year is kol nidre; a prayer which absolves them of all wrong, and they pray to lie to everyone for another year.

They hate the Constitution because it stands in the way of their batshit crazy, medievalist plot for world dominance.  We are being scammed by the nazionists. That is  the neo-cons, the neo-liberals: two sides of the same corrupt coin.

They hate humankind, apart from their own small homocidal tribe.

"I could spend my last efforts battering my body against rocks to make it upstream, on the infinitesimal chance that I may survive long enough to be declared a success.  And moments after becoming a success as my bleeding, broken body is failing, and with my last breaths of life, I will have the privilege of shooting my load, so that my progeny can repeat the process, on and on into eternity."

"OR, I could say fuck it and stay right here in the cool deep water, get shitfaced and die here without a scratch on me."

And upstream Krugman and thousands of other rotund bears stood in the shallow, fast moving waters, cleaning bits of delicious salmon flesh from their oily paws.  Some bears tossed the scraps of salmon skin and bloody bones to the unruly flocks of nearby crows, to hush them.  Some bears shoved new stones into the water where they had before seen a lucky or determined salmon slip through.  And as the day slipped away, the bears all patted their swollen bellies and asked each other, "I wonder where the next batch of salmon are? Krugman will get his confirmation when the mass exodus of middle class American whites to Canada begins and colleges begin to fail as more and more Americans see the value in foreign schools as better educational deal than those in America and the graduates of overseas schools never come back. Very similar to my thoughts for a while now.  Paticularly about education.  The emigration tax curtain is pretty light when you don't have much anyway.  There's really not much to stop a brain drain of the best and youngest once they stop seeing America as the "land of opportunity."  Why, even at this point, students are lining up to drop $60,000+ on a college education here they could get elsewhere in equal quality and a fraction of the cost, is beyond me.
