Third Freight Train Derails (Second Owned By Buffett) Days After Obama Kills Keystone Pipeline

Tyler Durden's picture

On Saturday, we noted with great irony, that just a day after Obama - with great pomp and even more preaching - killed the Keystone XL pipeline, that a freight train with 32 cars, belonging to Warren Buffett's BNSF, had derailed north of Alma, Wisconsin prompting several road closures and a voluntary evacuation of the affected area.

Then on Sunday, barely 24 hours later, in another Wisconsin derailment incident, a train, this time with 100-car, carrying crude oil, derailed near the intersection of S. Montgomery St. and West St. in Watertown on Sunday afternoon. The Mayor said the derailment happened around 2:00 p.m. While this train did not belong to BNSF but to Canadian Pacific Railroad instead, that was hardly comforting to the people.  The spokesperson said 13 cars tipped over, one of which was punctured and oil.

And then, moments ago in what we initially thought was a joke, KCRG reported that close to two dozen train cars derailed after a crash Monday morning. Lt. Brett Grimshaw of the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened a little after 8 a.m. when a coal train hit a road grader that had been backed up onto the tracks.

And before you ask, yes, this train, too, belongs to BNSF, which in turn belongs to Warren Buffett,

BNSF railroad spokesman Andy Williams said two locomotives and 21 of the 135 cars being pulled derailed near mile marker 249 of Highway 34, which is between Danville and New London close to the Henry County line.

The grader was backed up onto the rails while doing repairs on Highway 34 and didn’t see the train coming, Grimshaw said. The grader’s operator was thrown about 40 feet by the impact of the crash and was checked by paramedics. No injuries were reported, Grimshaw said.

Williams said the two tracks at the site are out of service until the spilled coal is removed and any track repairs are finished.

Which reminds of what we said yesterday:

And now make that 3 in the past 8 months. But at least the environment is safe because Obama finally pulled the plug on the "dangerous" Keystone XL pipeline.

Today, you can make that 3 oil trains in the past 8 months, and now add one coal train to the mix.

Or for the banks that issue war bonds to both sides?  The banks that own stock and bond in armorment companies?

In order to gain more power, the people in power need to first villify something and scare the shit out of people. Then they can raise taxes, add regulation, red tape, and everything else. Seeing as most people are dumb fucks they believe everything that is told to them.

These costs are going to keep making Tar Sands bitumen less and less profitable.

I can think of few things more stupid that strip-mining volatile carcinogenic compounds... that is, canadien tar oil.

Pounding the drum for more pipelines that will make it more cost-effective to get these open pits'... one of the worst environmental disasters on the planet... product to market is one thing > Asinine.

Are pipelines safer than rail?  Yep.

But it's the source that makes them both terrible options.  And to preempt the obvious "BUT BUT," NO, the oil isn't going to 'come out of the ground anyway.'   Several multi-billion dollar extraction projects in the Sands have already been shelved, and this is being helped by the lack of infrastructure that keeps oil > market prices >$80/bbl.

TL:DR > FUCK THE TAR SANDS, and fuck anything that makes it cheaper to bring them to market.

This was the first thought that came to my mind when I heard that the deal was off and Obama had subsequently blocked it.  My 2nd was how the carbon footprint of current crude transportation is greater than a pipeline.  This hole thing should be an embarrasment for the administration and America in general.  The same kind of stupidy drives the enthanol requirements.

This is not so much about pipelines but about rail infrastructure.

More money needs to be spent on upgrading, maintaining and improving rail corridors. Many lines are abandoned or in poor shape, threatened with closure, etc.

Rail transport was the backbone of this country for a century, until we let private interests and neglect destroy a large part of the system.

Double-tracking mainlines, reconstructing mainlines and eliminating grade crossings would go a long way, no pun intended.

A lot of coal is shipped out Norfolk, Virginia, to Europe, especially Germany. Why ship to Germany when they have a lot of coal in the Ruhr region? Because the Germans have severe environmental mining regulations that prevent the kind of wholesale strip-mining damage that is routine in the US. We sacrifice a lot of eastern Tennessee, eastern Kentucky, southern Ohio, and pretty much all of West Virginia so a few companies and people can make a lot of money.
