US To Send "Thousands" Of Troops, Attack Helicopters, Artillery, To Europe To "Deter Russia"

Tyler Durden's picture

On Sunday, we highlighted a keynote speech delivered in California last week at the Reagan National Defense Forum by a man who isn’t afraid to venture into the “danger zone” (so to speak):

Yes, that's Ash Carter in a V-22 Osprey hovering above the USS Theodore Roosevelt and that rather hilarious snapshot was taken just days before the Pentagon boss warned that Moscow may intend to nuke the US (and no, that's not us being hyperbolic, he actually suggested that) and that Washington needs to be careful to monitor China's "rise."

This all comes against a backdrop of absurd sabre rattling from all sides when it comes to The South China Sea and the Baltics and frankly, it would be pure political comedy gold were it not for the fact that things have recently taken a turn for the very serious now that it looks like US spec ops could end up in a shootout with the Russians and Hezbollah near Aleppo and/or with the Iranians near Raqqa, depending on where Washington decides to place its Syrian field "advisors."

But despite the fact that Russia has built an airbase at Latakia and looks set to literally take over the Mid-East alongside the Ayatollah, those "in the know" seem to think that the bigger threat is in Eastern Europe where NATO is hell bent on "countering" Russian "aggression," even though to the extent The Kremlin is being "aggressive", it certainly seems like Putin is taking it out on Sunni militants in the desert and not on far-right volunteer battalions in Ukraine.

Concerns about the potential for an epic Baltics battle have prompted officials to conduct a series of war games in an effort to determine the likely outcome, and as we noted a few months ago, the US loses everytime.

Well, in an effort to ameliorate that, "senior U.S. military leaders have proposed sending more forces into Europe on a rotating basis to build up the American presence and are stepping up training exercises to counter potential Russian interference with troop transfers in the event of a crisis with Moscow," WSJ reports, citing the same conference Carter spoke at last week. Here's more:

The new steps would allow for the presence of multiple U.S. brigades in Europe at any given time, increasing that number above current limits.

Gen. Philip Breedlove, the supreme allied commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, said he would like to see more brigades committed to Europe as rotational forces. Decisions on the proposal, he said, will be made “in the next couple of months.”

Gen. Mark Milley, the chief of staff of the U.S. Army, said the Army is refining its training to ensure the U.S. military is able to face threats posed by Russian forces, learning to counter hybrid war, which blends regular and irregular forces, propaganda and unconventional tactics to sow confusion. He also said he was in favor of sending more troops to deploy—on a temporary basis—to Europe.

Who knows what Milley means when he suggests that The Kremlin is trying to "sow confusion," but the takeaway is that the rhetoric here is starting to sound like something out of 1939. Case in point:

Such moves, Gen. Milley said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, are critical to ensure that no new conflict erupts in Europe.

“Aggression left unanswered is likely to lead to more aggression,” he said.

So basically, Milley is making a thinly veiled reference to the appeasement of Hitler. Back to WSJ:

The proposal for more rotating forces must be formally developed by Pentagon planners and then approved by the Obama administration and funded by Congress. The military will push for the inclusion of funding in a budget request to be sent to Capitol Hill early next year, officials said.

Russian officials declined to comment on Sunday. Senior Russian officials have repeatedly said there is little difference between rotational forces and a permanent buildup. They have also repeatedly accused the U.S. and NATO of being the aggressor in Europe.

“I fear that as we are dealing with Russia in Syria, the eyes are off the Donbas,” Gen. Breedlove said in an interview. “Why would we want our first negotiations on how we cooperate to be in Syria and then possibly allow the eyes of the world to accept what happened in Crimea?”

Yes, "why would we want" to de-escalate the situation in eastern Europe and waste a perfectly good chance to get into a shooting war there too? And here's more on how deploying thousands of troops keeps "tensions" from "growing into a conflict":

Defense officials said NATO would avoid massive troop buildups and instead rely on ways to get smaller numbers of troops forward from the U.S. both during a crisis and to prevent tensions from growing into a conflict.

The Army currently has two brigades—of about 3,500 soldiers each—based in Europe. It has assigned one additional brigade in the U.S. to serve as a regionally aligned force that will rotate into and out of Europe. Gen. Milley said he would like to add more brigades to those rotating to Europe, and add attack helicopter units, engineering teams and artillery brigades.

As you can see, this situation is getting more tenuous virtually by the day. Washington is now talking about sending "attack helicopter units" and "artillery brigades" to the Baltics as though the US is already at war. To be sure, Russia isn't innocent in all of this - we've said that on any number of occasions. But NATO's perpetuation of the idea that we've turned the clock back to the 60s, 70s, and 80s is starting to become something of a self-fulfilling prophecy and on that note, we'll close with one more comment from Milley who explains that while "nobody wants to go back... to the Cold War," that's actually "exactly what we should be doing":

“Nobody wants to go back to the days of the Cold War,” Gen. Milley said. “We don’t need exercises as big as Reforger anymore. But the concept of Reforger, where you exercise contingency forces … that is exactly what we should be doing.”

Troops in Europe are bullish for European economy. In contrast to refugees, US military is well paid and willing to spend. I'd say Russia would welcome such a move.

Basically, this is simply solidifying the "battle lines" akin to those of the Cold War thru the middle of

Germany.  NATO/EU has moved eastward since at least 1991 first incorporating former Warsaw Pact

states and co-opting (or attempting to do so) former USSR republics (Baltics, Ukraine, Georgia, etc).

Its Mackinder's Heartland Theory all over again w/ the renewal of the Great Game.  To be sure, Spykman's

Russia containment policy is alive and well.  The re-positioning of intermed-range nukes (in the 80s, they were Pershings)

on European soil (Poland this time) would be a logical next step (if it hasn't already been implemented).

It is what it is.

If only the US government had listened to General George S Patton in 1945: " I’ll say this; the Third Army alone with very little help and with damned few casualties, could lick what is left of the Russians in six weeks. You mark my words. Don’t ever forget them. Someday we will have to fight them and it will take six years and cost us six million lives." Ole "Blood & Guts" must be rolling in his grave at the demise of his beloved country.

Good point. Patton said it in 1945. Germany had just been defeated and the real/perceived threat to world peace, in Patton's opinion, was communism. Patton was also a "Dog of War", an anachronism from a bygone age of chivalry, a knight who loved America. I think Patton was cool because the quote was politically incorrect due to the alliance between Russia and the US. Today the only reason "why" is to feed the military industrial complex and to make the 0.1% even richer.

There isn't an attractive piece of land that the Brits or Americans didn't covet, conquer and colonize, if at all possible.

Whereas the Brits actually bothered to build an infrastructure in its colonies, the US is satisfied with draining its resources and imposing financial slavery instead.  They reward you with fast-food joints though, so that you may know what good food tastes like.

This is the US bid to retain its security-provider relationship with Europe and hence deter the creation of a EU Army.

Truly.

Every year since the creation of the EU, there has been the recurring proposition to creat a pan-European Army.

That would be very bad for Russia, bad for Europe, and bad for the US' banking relationship with Europe (as the major banking families who own the banks that compose the Federal Reserve are European).

The main problem is that despite propaganda to the contrary, the amount of US troops and equipment in Europe is too small to realistically do anything in the event of a land war in the European theater...regardless of with whom.

Add to this the US continuing inability to get a deal where a non-Russian pipeline can be built, thus defraying European concerns of wearing a slave collar with GASPROM's corporate logo on it...and you've got escalating problems growing in Europe...no matter what Russia does.

A close friend returned from a trip to Poland and the Baltics about six weeks or so ago, and what he told me caused me concern. He saw THOUSANDS OF NATO TROOPS EVERYWHERE HE WENT. Armor too. He even spoke to some of the US and Canadian officers. They told him they were staging there to deter a Russian invasion. My friend said that interestingly he didn't see any Polish, Lithuanian, Estonian or Latvian troops, just NATO. This story is about three months late. They are already there.

Systemic Cheating... with the collusion of the Ministry of Sport...who reports directly; given the importance of Russia's athletics national prestige;  to Head Man Putin himself.

Now, if the Putin system in athletics has cloned the COld War hanky panky of USSR and E.Germany what guaranty is there that this type of "despotism" is not accross the board to all areas of Russian society.

Although cold in the winter, the absolute safest place for US troops to be is the Baltics. Russia already 'controls' them economically, so has no intention of fighting a battle for them. And Putin is certainly not interested in taking over a Muslim country like Germany, or Hungary, etc.

Once again, the U.S. is fighting the wrong enemy - and those troops should be helping control the Muslim refugees flooding into Europe.

NATO Is Marching Towards Russia, and They Have No Idea What Awaits Them

I think it's fair to say that the war would also come to America's doorstep.

The thing about Complex Systems such as this, is that NO one can be more than 50% sure of what will happen.  A lot of unintended and fatal consequences would occur, and some of them totally unacceptable.

FWIW, here's my take:  If the Russian, Chinese and perhaps others put their minds, hearts and souls into it (the way that the Globalist Cabal does), then the level or symmetric and asymmetric escalation that could happen in the US, just might happen.  Who knows, perhaps it has to happen (per thousands of game theory sims), if there is a forced change of course from global genocide of the human species.

The level of present insanity does not make sense at the human level.  Rather, it only makes perfect logical sense if an evil ET group is behind the whole thing, seeking to either exterminate mankind, or to return it to a primitive, slavish form -- so that they benefit from our planet, and a small group/nation (of 'Chosen' people) can be their Managers on earth.  As far-flung as this sounds, it's the only thing that still makes sense, sad to say.

"Former DIA Director Gen Flynn Says Obama Created ISIS, Supposedly To Overthrow Syrian Government"

http://rickwells.us/archives/17693

and...

"Thanks in part to the declassification of Defense Intelligence documents, connecting those missing dots seems to have finally reveled what most Middle East observers have suspected all along, that the rise of the terrorist group ISIS and the likelihood of establishing a terror state (a caliphate), had been predicated by both the CIA and DIA, as far back as 2012.

And purposely created by the Obama Administration in part to isolate the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad. The documents also predicted that the support given by the West, Turkey and the Persian Gulf Arab states to the Takfiri militants would eventually lead to the establishment of a Salafist Principality in Eastern Syria.

According to investigative reporter Nafeez Ahmed, the “leaked document reveals that in coordination with the Gulf states and Turkey, the West intentionally sponsored violent Islamist groups to destabilize Assad, despite anticipating that doing so could lead to the emergence of an ‘Islamic State’ in Iraq and Syria.”

WW 3 would have to be THE dumbest way of culling the herd, if the genuine interest of the human species is the goal: You'd destroy too much of Nature and too many 'right people': smart, non-violent, creative, productive, able to evolve.

The smartest way to cull the herd, would be in a targeted fashion -- via targeted infertility: the dumbest, most violent and DNA-sickest would not be able to reproduce.  They'd simply die out.  No fuss, no muss.

You'd think that a technically and intellectually evolved 'Deity' (space aliens) would have figured this out, and implemented it, rather than have "epic/global floods", pandemics, etc.

They have and they are and most are headed to hell for the same reasons.  If you can change your sinful nature, then likewise a leopard can change its spots.  The problem is people are less constrained in the areas of morality as we now legitimatize immorality and naturally (via our nature) with fewer constraints the more our nature's manifest themselves.  It will get much more grotesque; it is known as the doctrine of Depravity, but that ancient book is old school and way outdated for anything useful.

Look at how rude people have become and callous as well.  We do not value marriage, family, and the sanctity of life...the very fabric of all healthy societies.  Perhaps someone in academia could fund a study on that on the taxpayer dime.

Here's an example:

http://uscpublicdiplomacy.org/blog/theres-russian-troll-your-computer-no...

You can of course judge for yourself but I'll quickly note 3 things:

1. Author assumes that deviation from US gov (neocon, zionist, hyperinterventionist, lawless, etc.) as to Russia is per se trolling. In other words, there is no room to disagree with the stated purpose of US support for coups, terrorism, etc. This is prima facie absurd. Its the Thought-Borg telling you dissent from a treasonous warfare state is treason.

2. Author worked for VOA for years - literally a .gov propaganda outfit. Guy drank the kool-aid then filled his pool with it;

3. Author admits that the State Dept hires people explicitly to 'challenge Russian propaganda' online. That is, call anyone who discerns the bullshit a troll, like our friend here, who is just obtuse enough to work for State. PsyOps trained he is not. No, this is a clumsy, oafish, juvenile Thought Cop, who may as well write Editorials for the WaPost.

Ultimately the US still has a foreign policy hijacked by chickenhawk psychos, largely Zionist. They have openly called, for years, for a series of wars for Israel and/or attempting to weaken and destabilize Russia and China. This is not for vital national security needs, nor even the dollar, which is dying anyway.

Lies are vital to selling these wars to a war weary public

http://www.mintpressnews.com/isis-israel-iraq-and-syria-its-all-part-of-...

Part of maintaining the lie is in essence villifying any and all dissent A PRIORI.

Historically, defense enjoys a 3-to-1 advantage over attackers. The smart thing for Russia to do is beef up defense-in-depth and wait out the inevitable bankruptcy of the American Imperium. But instead of modernising their economy, they keep a regulatory stranglehold on entrepreneuership while skimming resource wealth from the land.

What I would like to see is independence movements inside the Russian Federation, à la Catalonia. For example, Bashkortostan would be a wealthy republic. 4 million people and 36% is manufacturing. They should keep their mineral wealth instead of subsidizing the Kremlin vermin in their efforts to stay in power.

Russia going to nuke u.s., so were sending a few thousand troops into the eu., to train to counter potential threats of possible troop movements, oh and monitor china's rise, you can't make this shit up.

these troops are going to be for riot control.

if I lived in the eu, I'd be watching to see if there's any hint of merkel starting to grow a mustache,

if Putin's going to do anything he's going to close his borders, adopt strict immigration controls, and watch.

the pentagon is neutered, these generals are msm spokes people, their out blaming Russia, and china for us, and eu failures, when Russia, and China are sitting back watching u.s., and eu self-destruct, and destroy many countries, with them making many enemies along the way.

I know Russia, and china, have their own financial problems, but my only thought is who can print the most fiat, until there's sdr's adopted, and you've got drop your jockeys, and show what you really have as true assets.

this is were these secret trade pacts are going to create global friction, their trying to get all the huge u.s. co's deeply involved, in order to keep the dollar deeply, and inordinately invoved in the world trade, to make sure of a higher valued sdr.
