Did Someone Try To Sabotage Russia's North Stream Gas Pipeline With An Underwater Drone

Tyler Durden's picture

When last we visited the Nord Stream pipeline story we noted that the prospect of doubling the line’s capacity in conjunction with Western O&G companies was effectively allowing Moscow to adopt a hardline approach in talks with Ankara.

Turkish autocrat President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is keen on seeing Syria’s Bashar al-Assad pushed aside and, as everyone who doesn’t live in a cave knows, Russia and Iran are keen on preserving the Assad government. This makes for a rather awkward scenario. Ankara and Moscow have established deep trade ties and when Russian jets venture into Turkish airspace whilst attempting to bomb some of the very same militants Turkey has supported, the relationship becomes strained. That goes double when Turkey shoots down Russian drones.

Now obviously, there are very real questions about whether Erdogan can support Ankara’s assertion that Turkey can survive without Russian gas. The idea that either Russia or Turkey would jeopardize the Turkish Stream based on differences of opinion about the President of Syria is to a certain extent absurd (although what happens to that President may shape the future of energy transports from the Mid-East to Europe), but whatever the case, the Nord Stream has become key for the Russians and as we documented in the hilarious "They're Making Idiots Of Us!": Eastern Europe Furious At West For Doing Gas Deals With Russian Devils,” Ukraine and Slovakia aren’t pleased with Moscow’s memorandum of intent with Shell, E.On and OMV.

Here’s a look at the Nord Stream:

Well, in what certainly may be a coincidence but in what also looks remarkably suspicious given the current geopolitcal circumstances, an underwater drone "rigged with explosives" (to quote RT) was spotted near the Nord Stream by Sweden. Here's more

An unmanned military underwater vehicle rigged with explosives was spotted on the seabed in the vicinity of the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltics on Friday, Swedish media report. The device is expected to be disarmed on November 9.

An abandoned expendable remotely-operated mine clearance underwater vehicle allegedly with explosives onboard has been detected in multinational waters of the Baltic Sea by the Swedish Navy, Svenska Daglabet reports.

The discovery was made during a routine check of the Nord Stream pipeline. Since it was discovered in the Swedish economic zone, north of the island of Gotland, the Nord Stream pipeline operator immediately notified the Swedish military.

The type of ROV (remote operated vehicle) found near Gotland is typically used to disarm big unremovable munitions found on seabed, as the drone is blown up along with the dangerous object.

The national identity of the drone has not been verified so far, as many countries use UUVs of a similar construction, Stolpe said.

So, here's a drone equipped with explosives that shows up near the Nord Stream just as the expansion of the pipeline's capacity threatens Ukraine and Slovakia and gives Russia negotiating leverage with Ankara in the middle of war in a country that shares a border with Turkey.

Maybe it's nothing, but bear in mind this is Russia's go-to pipeline at this juncture and since no one seems to want to come forward and claim they own the drone, one is certaily left to wonder if this could possibly have been an attempt at sabotage.

Read again, it isn't a drone.

It's a trencher that has been modified for mine clearance work.

The fact is has explosives on board is far more likely down to the fact it was deployed to sweep a mine (which it probably did). And also notice that it is expendable.

My guess is this thing is 25 years old, and was deployed in early 90's to destroy a mine. It collected the munition but couldn't detonate it and so was left in situ.

The End.

Happens all the time.

May 2014 A Canadian explosive ordnance disposal team detonates a World War II German naval mine after safely removing it from the wreck of a German minelayer worked by them and U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 8. The teams were participating in Open Spirit, a multinational operation that disposes of mines and other ordnance remaining on the seabed from World War I and World War II to reduce the risk to navigation, fishing and to the environment in the Baltic Sea.

You dont want one of those going off aywhere near a gas pipeline. It would be standard practice to make sure the bed is clear before installation.

Apply the pressure in every way possible, hopefully inciting rebellion, race wars, and religious intolerance in order to split the people and keep them from acting against those who put them in that situation in the first place. When a 'quota' of deaths has been realized, offer to alleviate the situation - but only on THEIR terms, which will be stifling.

The plan seems to be going well. Cutting the gas will make it go even better, and faster.

You wish the POS F-35 costs that little.  They cost closer to about $300 million when all is said and done (search youtube for Pierre Sprey F-35 - he has the numbers).

My guess is the number being built by the allies will keep dropping raising the price even more.  No one wants that junk.

Mate that F-35 is going rock your world when it comes into service.
No other mass built aircraft has the capability to go into an IADS and knock out equipment without losing 90% of your first attack wave.
F-22 is useless in ground attack can only drop JDAM and SDB.
You need stand off munitions that only the F-35 can deploy.
Turkey will be providing heavy maintenance to all Euro F-35s and I'm proud we won the contract.
Excellent ground attack aircraft and with advanced AA missiles can take out any fighter in service. You can't out turn an AIM-9X Block II and can't 'outrun' an AIM-120D or Meteor.

It could be anybody really. Who hasn't got a drone sub these days that can dive 300 to 600 meters and do sabotage missions?

I bet you can make one yourself with a small budget of a million or 2 or 3 and a small crew of electricians, robotic engineers, communication specialists and somebody who knows how to blow stuff up and have access to a shitload of militairy grade explosives...

And all you need is another sub or a boat to bring you there to launch the craft.... and have detailed maps where those pipes are...

Like I said... it could be anybody...

So are you saying that the frequent provocations by the West towards Russia are not because of two different ideologies. It's a battle (war?) for who will be the Top Dog oligarch? They're all the same.

G Edward Griffin has talked about this for some time. He argues - quite correctly in my view - that the battle between the political Left and Right is false and it's simply a battle to become the Top Dog.  G Edward Griffin:

The very big problem with this is if it happens, then all will do it. It becomes open season.

Saudi oil rigs, US, ME pipelines etc.

This is why it is never done.

And if it is done annonymously then all such occurences on other countries oil / gas assets similarly attacked can be claimed to be annonymous.  The whole energy system global comes under risk.

If it had been successful you can bet some strange terrorist blowing up of Saudi oil wells.

Someone will go too far some day, they will succeed in taking down a major Russian project like the pipeline. Then all will plead innocence. Russia will gather intelligence, make their best bet on who did it, and retaliate. The west thinks they can do anything to the Russians, and Putin will surrender, like for over 20 years after the RF was founded. I suspect playing hard ball with Russia right now is a bad idea, terrorism is great fun, until the victim turns back and bitch slaps you with the same medicine.

Someone is looking to start World War III. The signs are all over the place. Islamic terror spreads like wildfire and everyone is innocent. We don't know how they get all the money, arms and training, we swear we don't!

MH-17, a massive false flag, with the west hiding all real evidence. The west knows all about the Russian airliner though, they know how it was done without ever seeing the evidence! Hows that work, when with all the MH-17 evidence, they can produce no real smoking gun.

Just make one wrong move, poke Russia in the eye and think it is a laugh. What if they start to fund friendly terror, and start pulling false flags, pay off rebels to tear nations apart? What then? Will they always turn the other cheek.

Or really, who in the White House want's world war III so badly? Zionists, Neo-cons, corporations, insane nationalists? Or all of them. Obama , the Black Muslim Puppet President should be on the board of directors for ISIS, and chief in charge of Islamic Migaration to Europe and the USA.

Imagine if, instead of A321 being blown out of the sky, the CIA had tipped the Egyptians about the bomb and it was safely removed.

The explosive drone and the bomb on Airbus A321 are cut from the same cloth: the intensive punishment of Russia by the US government and its black hand, the CIA.

Why did the Airbus explode and the drone did not?

The Airbus was carrying 224 Russian civilians, considered the enemy, while if the drone had exploded in November in Northern Europe, millions of citizens of our allies would have become very angry at their loss of warmth.

They'd know that the Russians didn't sabotage the pipe and they'd know that ISIS didn't do it.

That leaves the US, Turkey or Ukraine.

Not too hard to figure that one out.

So the drone was just a harmless shot across Russia's bow by the CIA.

British intelligence knew that an attack on a civilian airplane was planned in that area but deciced not to warn others because "we share some information and other information we don't share". Like information that can save lives of holiday makers?

Here's Sputnik today

The United Kingdom will not be able to to reveal all the national intelligence data related to the Russian plane crash in Egypt, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammonds said on Monday.

 http://sputniknews.com/military/20151110/1029842004/a321-crash-intelligence-uk-russia.html#ixzz3rA1K1qkX

Of course, Her Magesty's Honorable Twats know that the CIA blew up the plane, but don't expect them to tell that to Russia.

The game today is to make the CIA innocent of even thinking about such an act.

So if you don't believe that ISIS has the wherewithal to pull this off,  England has very relevant info which it can't share.

Whatever you do, don't waste your time trying to prove it was the CIA.

What contempt the Brits have for civilization, to publicly announce they have evidence but choose not to share it.

Let their fucking island slip into the main when the glaciers melt and let no trace of their perverted existence be ever seen.

"British intelligence knew that an attack on a civilian airplane was planned in that area [...]"

You may be right, but in my experience MI-6 and its masters in the FCO/No.10 rarely ever admit to knowing about anything. Of course they actually know about a whole lot and are often involved in causing it but it's all kept very very secret.

More likely, the British ISIS guy was smuggled out of Syria by the 6 SAS men sent in 'dressed as ISIS'. He was probably trained in the Jordan training center in Amman that the Americans set up after they were 'kicked out' of Iraq.

A map says a whole lot more than words.

Because America wants to dominate Eurasia, Europe as its bitch needs to support America's wars in the ME; allow a potential explosive situation in Ukraine; and except all these migrants.

Even during the coldwar Russia as part of the SU was a reliable partner when it came to supplying gas.

A review of the ten largest Swedish newspapers shows that none of them have any articles about this story. Given Swedish sensitivities about the environment (a pipeline explosion offshore would not be seen as healthy for families) and their territorial integrity (the Russian sub incursions), one might reasonably expect to have some commentary in the local press on this.

Largebrneyes1:

“A review of the ten largest Swedish newspapers shows that none of them have any articles about this story.”

My comments:

The big media in Sweden has actually informed the general public about this underwater drone:

The Swedish national radio network:

http://sverigesradio.se/sida/artikel.aspx?programid=94&artikel=6296896

The largest Swedish newspaper:

http://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/article21718415.ab

The third largest newspaper:

http://www.dn.se/nyheter/sverige/undervattensfarkost-vid-rysk-gasledning-utanfor-oland/

The fourth largest newspaper:

http://www.svd.se/apterad-farkost-utanfor-oland

The big media does not say that there was no intention to be able to harm the pipeline but does not claim the opposite either.

If, let´s say, the US or Ukraine would blow up this pipeline the general public would probably not think that this was unjustified. The general public thinks that the US and Ukraine are democracies and that Russia is not a true democracy. Therefore, they think that attacking Russian property would be justified if the big media would say that this is necessary in order to restore democracy in Russia or something like that.

If the Russians want the Swedes to have a more favourable attitude on Russia they got to do something about the big media in Sweden and perhaps create new parties in Sweden, i.e. adopt a strategy similar to the US and people like George Soros. I think that there may be a referendum on Swedish NATO membership in a few years and it is quite likely that a majority of the Swedes will vote for NATO membership. It seems as if the Swedish Centre party changed it´s mind on NATO membership shortly after John McCain visited Sweden in August.

Putin may be many things, but he is not a communist in my opinion.

That is simply what Western politicos want you to think because it conjours up fears that he's trying to create Soviet Union II.

Yesterday at 23;22 I said

intensive punishment of Russia by the US government and its black hand, the CIA.

I am so spaced out, I totally forgot to mention the threat of throwing the Russians and their athletes out of the Olympics in Brazil (don't even think about letting them host the World Cup in 2018).

THAT THREAT IS ALL BASED ON SUBORNED TESTIMONY GIVEN TO A COMMISSION PACKED WITH TOOLS OF THE CIA.

IT IS TIME FOR RUSSIA TO STOP BEING UBER FOR SHUTTLING ITS ENEMIES TO THE ISS.

AND TO REMOVE THE RUSSIAN SEGMENT OF THE STATION FROM THE WHOLE AND LET THE WEST DEAL WITH WHAT'S LEFT BY ITSELF.
