How can we possibly be so miserably unhappy? For a nation that supposedly “has it all”, we sure are depressed.
In America today, suicide rates are soaring, antidepressant use is skyrocketing and virtually every new survey that comes out shows that we are deeply dissatisfied about something. But we live at a time when there are more things to enjoy than ever before.
When I was growing up there was only a handful of television channels to choose from, but now there are hundreds. We have more movies than we could ever possibly watch, more books than we could ever possibly read, and the greatest video games ever made are at our fingertips. With all of the entertainment that surrounds us, you would think that Americans would be happier than ever before, and yet we continue to become even more depressed. Everywhere I go, I see people that look like they have had the life completely sucked out of them.
So why is this happening? The following are 21 signs that Americans are the unhappiest people in the entire world…
#1 A scientific study that was just released found that U.S. adults are becoming less happy over the years…
“Adults over 30 are less happy than their predecessors,” concludes a study published online Thursday in the journal Social Psychology and Personality Science, which examined happiness data from more than 50,000 adults, gleaned from the General Social Survey, carried out by NORC at the University of Chicago, a nonpartisan, independent research organization, which has collected information about American adults since 1972.
From 2010 to 2014, adults over 30 had an average happiness score of just 2.18, compared with 2.24 a decade ago. That’s significant considering happiness scores were measured on a tiny scale from just 1 to 3, with 1 being “not too happy” and 3 being “very happy.”

Americans are more depressed now than they have been in decades, a recent study has found. San Diego State University (SDSU) psychology professor Jean M. Twenge analyzed data from nearly 7 million adolescents and adults from across the country and found that more people reported symptoms of depression — including sleeplessness and trouble concentrating — compared to the 1980s.
Twenge’s findings show that teenagers in the 2010s experience memory trouble 38 percent more often than their 1980s counterparts. Teens are also 74 percent more likely to have trouble sleeping and twice as likely to see a professional for mental health issues. College students in the study reported feeling overwhelmed by academic and personal demands 50 percent more often than their 1980s counterparts.
#3 Back in 1987, 61.1 percent of all Americans reported being happy at work. Today, 52.3 percent of all Americans say that they are unhappy at work.
#4 A different survey found that 70 percent of all Americans do not “feel engaged or inspired at their jobs”.
#5 One survey of 50-year-old men in the U.S. found that only 12 percent of them said that they were “very happy”.
#6 The number of Americans diagnosed with depression increases by about 20 percent each year.
#7 According to the New York Times, more than 30 million Americans take antidepressants.
#8 Doctors in the United States write more than 250 million prescriptions for antidepressants each year.
#9 The rate of antidepressant use among middle aged women is far higher than for the population as a whole. It is hard to believe, but right now one out of every four women in their 40s and 50s is taking an antidepressant medication.
#10 Compared to children in Europe, children in the United States are three times more likely to be prescribed antidepressants.
#11 In America today, there are 60 million people that abuse alcohol and there are 22 million people that use illegal drugs.
#12 America has the highest rate of illegal drug use on the entire planet.
#13 One recent poll found that 71 percent of Americans are dissatisfied with the direction that things are going in this country.
#14 America has the highest divorce rate in the world by a wide margin.
#15 America has the highest percentage of one person households on the entire planet.
#16 100 years ago, 4.52 people were living in the average U.S. household, but now the average U.S. household only consists of 2.59 people.
#17 According to the Pew Research Center, only 51 percent of all American adults are married. Back in 1960, 72 percent of all adults in the United States were married.
#18 The suicide rate in the United States is now the highest that it has been in 25 years.
#19 According to one absolutely shocking study, 22 military veterans kill themselves in the United States every single day.
#20 The suicide rate for Americans between the ages of 35 and 64 rose by close to 30 percent between 1999 and 2010. The number of Americans that are killed by suicide now exceeds the number of Americans that die as a result of automobile accidents every year.

We are told that Christmas, for Christians, should be the happiest time of year, an opportunity to be joyful and grateful with family, friends and colleagues. Yet, according to the National Institute of Health, Christmas is the time of year that people experience the highest incidence of depression. Hospitals and police forces report the highest incidences of suicide and attempted suicide. Psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health professionals report a significant increase in patients complaining about depression. One North American survey reported that 45% of respondents dreaded the festive season.
So why in the world is this happening?
We have one of the highest standards of living in the world and we are surrounded by massive amounts of entertainment.
Yet we are severely depressed.
And during the “happiest time of the year” we get even more depressed.
Clearly something has gone very wrong.
Even more entertainment is not going to fix us, and neither will more drugging.

There is one thing that depresses Americans who have had enough money to travel abroad. The lack of exceptionalism. The people living in those "other" countries seem to have a better quality of life.
I've lived in lots of other countries. Trust me. Americans aren't even close to being the most depressed. In fact, I'd say we're a happy lot compare to most Asians and Scandinavians. This article is bullshit.

I'm not very religious but believe the reasons are simple, most America's are materialistic and secular, they live for themselves and are selfish. The happiest people I know have families that they focus on and love and go to church. So many of my GenX friends have neither and are simply adult children looking for something, but they don't know what.
you don't need church for that - my family is very happy and nobody goes to church - we help everyone, I've saved 3 poepl efrom drowning (on 2 occaasions), persuaded 15 or so friends aroudn the world to study for degrees (and I helepd them fill applicatins and apply for grants etc and even do their first assignments). ...my cousins and friends are the same - and none of us is religious.
When I grew up in Yugoslavia nobody encouraged us to go to church, but nobody taught us to fear invisible masters etc. Therewere churches all ove rthe place form centuries ago - open for anyone to go there if they wished. Even my great grand mother was not religious. The first time I saw a bible was in my 20s when i moved to London. My family was quite typical in every way

People in the USA are unhappy for one very good reason: everything sucks. For over 30 years, the federal government has been the number one drug dealer in the country, shipping in cocaine, heroin and speed. The cancer rate in the USA increases steadily, people are killed by required vaccinations, by getting sent to be cannon fodder overseas for our Saudi masters and, if they complain too much, by roving death squads. The role model that dope dealing presidents Reagan, Bush , Clinton and Obama follow is the Nazi regime, complete with degenerate judges who get a sexual thrill sending people away for decades in prison. The social fabric in this country is shredded beyond repair. A police state where the police sell drugs, shoot people in the back with impunity and where even the Russians know that the Bushes operated the largest methamphetamine lab in the world in ISIS occupied Syria. Until the Russian war planes blew it up, which explains the bombing of the Russian passenger jet in Egypt. Just like people in concentration camps in Nazi occupied Europe were unhappy, so too are Americans unhappy in the vast criminal gulag we used to call "the land of the free."

Been to New Zealand? Even more miserable here. A full quarter of the native born population has fled this sad little country. The suicide epidemic has moved from teens to pre-teens on to 4th graders. We just had a 9 year old girl suicide at school.

I was an applicant for the H1B visa not long ago. I went to a top university in America. I am of European heritge. The people I call best friends are American. My girlfiend was American at the time. I was already working in America and was paid market salar.
Yet, I wasn't able to get the visa due to a quota, and had to go back to Europe.

the reason why poeple in countries like Serbia or Spain are happier is all to do with social conectedness, sharing and collabratin. If you have a good family, cousins, friends etc (and vice versa) life is much easier no matter what hits you.
Peple are too busy eating dinners with their cousins, parents and children an dmeeting old friends to be inquisitive about their Subjective Wellbeing etc. Or yoga and what Madonna is wearing etc. They find fun in everything. Neighbors and friends constantly bring their produce (and you do the same if you have any) etc
Nobody (apart from Americans) ever says to their parents etc: "I love you!" If you love them they can tell - no need to say it so often or ever

I think if one had been living in the 19th century and somebody told you that 100 years later people were going to be living in this extraordinary wealth and comfort with central heating, and being able to throw away such a high proportion of our food as do, we'd imagine that we'd be living in a state of extraordinary social harmony and everything would be rosy. It's really quite remarkable the contrast between, if you like, the material successes of our societies and the social failure.
The growth economy demands that we make consumption a way of life. He who dies with the most toys became an ambition and retail replaced spiritual satisfaction. Unsurprisingly sales of antidepressants skyrocketed.
The fact is that the world economy over the last few years has been built either on the military or on producing items that most people don't need, and really don't even want but we all gotta have them.
Consumerism is driven by our extraordinarily social nature, that we want to have the stuff so we look good in other people's eyes. It's because I experienced myself through other people's eyes, the feelings of shame and embarrassment or pride and maybe feeling envied. The goods are just a way of mediating the relationship between yourself and others in this extraordinarily alienated hierarchy.
What's really suffered is human relationships, family life, the things that really matter to us. In the end the only thing that makes human beings happy isn't money, it's very clear that past a certain level you only get marginal gains from wealth. What really makes us happy is other people. It's our relationship with other people that's really been damaged by the last 30 years. We trust them less, we have less interaction with them, we bond less than ever before, we marry less, and marriage is under more threat that never before and all the associations that represent permanent unconditional human affection are being eroded or damaged and that's the real legacy of the last 30 years and in some sense we have to recover or re-humanize our lives otherwise not only will they be nasty brutish and short, but they'll be lonely.
The west is coming to the realization that it's human project is failing. The west was so convinced that if you pushed people to achieve as individuals, the accumulated achievement of individuals would make for a successful society. What the west is beginning to realize is that individual achievement without incorporating the vulnerable community is a myth. The idea was make your own life, be individually aspiring and you'll be individually achieving, and you'll be individually prosperous, and then you'll be individually happy. You end up doing that in a glass jar, and the glass jar has a limited height and it's encapsulating, and in the end you die of lack of oxygen.
Human beings are alive because they seek attachment and because they're propelled by affection. So the isolated achieving individual in the end implodes.
In order to find a purpose of life it has to be outside yourself. It matters not how you construct it outside yourself as long as it's a positive value added to society pursued. It has to be outside yourself, it can't be yourself. If you're pursuing yourself, you are pursuing the abyss as Nietzsche said, you are going to wind up in the abyss.

I noticed that when I took a 20 mg of sildenafil, when depressed, and I work out, It's better than sex. Whatever muscle you're working, gets pumped up and you feel euphoric. I also take a scoop of C4 and a scoop of Amino 2000 before I work out. I used to be addicted to alcohol, pain killers, and marijuana. Now it's Viagra, C4, Amino 2000, testosterone and hgh. Also, I take zolpidem to sleep. The best part of my day is working out. Now that I've started punching the bags and kicking, my cardio is going through the roof. After I lift weights, I learn languages while walking on the treadmill. I don't know, but at 50, my body looks 25. I'm definetley not as strong, but I have better cardio because when I lift weights, I constantly pyramid the weights without rest. Does anyone take these drugs too?
