German women do not have children and Germany in general is a very children hostile culture, especially in large cities. I remember back in the 1990s it was almost impossible to rent an apartment in Munich if you had more than one child. Nobody would rent to you as they preferred singles or older (quiet) people. You can also blame the Euro for the continued decline in birth rates. There is a huge difference between taking home DM 3000 after taxes and taking home €1500 today. Everything in Germany is expensive and taxed to the hilt. Over the last decade and a half, real wages have actually declined for many job catagories. A huge problem for example is in the healthcare branch. Nurses, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Nursing Home attendants, are all paid like shit. My niece, for example, is an ICU nurse working full-time shift work, at a hospital in downtown Munich, and she earns between €1600 and €1700 a month. Needless to say, she could never afford even a tiny appartment in Munich making that kind of money. The only reason she can work there at all is because the hospital has it´s own appartment complexes near the hospital which provides (not free) housing for many of the workers. Without the "Schwesternheim" nobody could afford to work there. I don´t see her having any kids in her 20´s thats for sure.

In the 90s, when Berlin was still only starting its (re)ascent, Munich was to Germany what New York was to the US: the most expensive city, to which a majority of citizens would like to move and get a job there.
