How To Know If You're A Fascist - Lessons From Yale & Mizzou

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Bill Barlow via The Harvard Law Record,

Usually, we at Harvard are more than happy to see Yale students make fools of themselves on camera. The video that emerged this week of Yale students screaming down one of their professors might make for a good laugh, if its implications were not quite so serious. It’s a scene we’ve seen played out far too often at college campuses in recent years, and it deserves to be called by what it is: a nascent form of fascism.

In case you haven’t heard, Yale has recently endured a firestorm of protest after a lecturer that presides over one of the undergraduate colleges questioned whether concerns about the offensiveness of Halloween costumes had gone too far in impinging on free speech.

In response, hundreds of protesters gathered on the quad, calling for Nicholas and Erika Christakis to be removed from their roles. Nicholas voluntarily came to discuss the matter with them, and soon, a crowd of students enveloped him.

The video is chilling.

One student is heard saying, “Walk away. He doesn’t deserve to be listened to.” When Nicholas started to explain himself, a student yells, “Be quiet!” and then proceeds to lecture him. When Nicholas calmly and politely says “I disagree,” the protestor explodes, screaming, “Why the fuck did you accept the position?! Who the fuck hired you?! You should step down!” Then, finally, “You’re disgusting!”

The problem here isn’t that people disagree with what Nicholas said. The problem is that they are calling for reprisals against Nicholas and Erika simply for saying it. This recent movement of university students to use administrative procedures to punish speech with which they disagree should be called by its rightful name: proto-fascism.

Several days later, students disrupted an event held by the William F. Buckley, Jr. program that was designed to highlight the importance of free speech. According to reports by the Yale Daily News, several attendees were spat on as they left.

Once again, the problem isn’t that you disagree with what the event said (though, if you disagree with an event about the importance of free speech, that might be a cause for concern itself), but that you are using a tactic—spitting—that constitutes battery, and should never be used against someone for expressing beliefs that you disagree with.

I understand that it can sometimes be difficult for college students today to tell the difference between fascist methods and non-fascist methods of advancing their beliefs and agendas. Luckily, I spent my senior thesis studying the rise of fascism in Europe, and am happy to give a few, easy tips about whether the activity you are engaged in adopts fascist tactics or not. To make it even easier, I’ve put it in table form:

Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list, but it’s a good starting point. Ask yourself the question: Am I calling for people to be officially sanctioned because of what they believe, or am I committing a crime against someone because of what they believe? If the answer is yes, you are probably engaging in fascist tactics.

Given the public outcry, it seems that the majority of people, including the majority of progressive liberals, believe that Yale students calling for the resignation of those professors have gone too far in punishing free speech. The problem is that no one is willing to stand up to them. If we are going to begin anywhere, we are going to begin by calling them by their rightful name.

They are fascists.

They are fascists.

They are fascists.

There is NO fascism in the actions of these out of control chimps.

Fascism is corporate/ business based.

Do this and colleges and universities are done.

We stick them in day care at a tender age and put nonsense into their heads till they are in their early twenties so what does anyone expect?

After all these high priced 'expert' educators were paid for by the 'people' and school boards and what not were 'voted' in by the people and some clown who couldn't make it on main street determined their curriculum.

It is not the students fault.

Look in the mirror and you will be seeing the guilty party.

Really interesting that members of faculty or administration are denigrated for not coddling these narcissistic overwrought children who seem to have no interest in becoming adults. They demand emotional "safe places". At the same time, there appears almost no recognition in the MSM that the chancellor of UC Merced and the sheriff both may have had prior notification that the stabbing asssailant, Faisal Mohammad, was on a jihadi watch list. If so, these two persons in responsible positions failed to provide a "safe place" from a known threat of physical harm. The sheriff claimed that islam had nothing to do with Faisal Mohammad's actions. The chancellor claimed that there is no reason to believe that the event was related to terrorism.

http://www.mcntvnews.com/was-law-enforcement-and-uc-chancellor-aware-of-...

Since their responses have been politically correct, they both may be able to get away with this with no blowback.

The case is being turned over to the FBI.

The last time the West had the relative extent of "feminization" and "Zionization" (not that there's anything wrong with that, so said Seinfeld) was prior to the French and Russian Revolutions that resulted in Napoleon and Stalin coming to power, and following WW I during the Weimar Republic, the collapse of which resulted in Herr Hitler and his Brown-shirt Nazis coming to power, thanks to The City and Wall St. funding an intellectual-warrior and his thugs to oppose Stalinism in order to sustain Wall St., The City, and Anglo-American empire.

It's all good if your a rentier-socialist imperialists in the top 0.001-1%, but not so much if you're in the bottom 80-90%, and eventually in the bottom 99%.

The author of this article is confusing fascism with neurosis.

“Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power.”
? Benito Mussolini

I believe that Mussolini's definition of fascism is quite a bit more accurate.

The students in the video are displaying signs of narcissistic personality disorder. The Mayo Clinic offers the following definition of the disorder: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/narcissistic-personality-d...

On that Web page is the following definition:

"Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of ultraconfidence lies a fragile self-esteem that's vulnerable to the slightest criticism."

Leftism and Fascism might as well be synonymous. Wanting more government control, and more control in general is the very definition of Fascism. This is why many communist governments were dictatorships. Democracy, Socialism, Fascism, Communism, these words are simply measurements of government authority and when government authority grows too powerful it is the common man that suffers. When the common man signs his vote to increase government power he signs the bill to his own misery and history will show that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

A Harvard law professor just committed the "everything I don't like is fascism" fallacy. In reality, though what he's describing is not atypical of historical fascists, it is unequivocally definitive of communists, and simply not unique or particular to any species of statism ... it's just plain old (self-)righteous intolerance, which is no more especially fascist than secret police, domestic spying, or political parades.

I think that I have finally found my motorcycle patch and it is this...  http://www.thecheapplace.com/biker-patches/no-club-no-rules-just-ride-pl4547

What do you folks think?  Even the Mrs. likes it.  The patch has everything I want.  Gold silver and no statist flags.  That is my style and it is anything but fascist/statist.  I like the DILLIGAF top rocker but it might be too small.  DILLIGAF means "Does It Look Like I Give A Fuck".  I still want a ZeroHedge top rocker though but maybe that doesn't work.  One thing at a time I guess.  That website has a nice a FTW patch that could go on my shoulder.  I am going to make my leather my own because I am NOT a fascist/statist.  One thing is for sure though, no one in the world will have a jacket like mine and that is because I am an individual with my own ideas be they right or be they wrong.

I will wear it to some school board meetings where you usually can't say anything because there is no public input allowed.  Many city council meetings are this way as well unless you request speaking time ahead of time.  My leather will speak for itself and I won't have to say a word.  Just stare at the board members with no expression on your face and don't say a word.  I have already gotten attention without saying a word other than a "hello".

This stuff does not take place in a vacuum. I’m having trouble believing these actions are taking place on college campuses for the reasons reported. I.E. Micro Aggressions, un-intentional racism, insensitive costumes, a safe place against ucky stuff, etc.

I would be looking for agent’s provocateur and some sort of organized disruption agenda. Getting all riled up about what amounts to flea infestations while millions of Americans are being turned out of their homes and the safety nets are being ripped out from under them surely doesn't play well and certainly serves to distract.. Of course the savings on the safety nets pay for the imperial designs of the too rich elite. Meanwhile, the over priced health care system is crumbling and the neocons are poking nuclear armed bears with sharp sticks while attention is being mis directed toward micro aggressions and Halloween costumes.

These much ado about nothing protests certainly keeps these kids out of the kind of trouble that brought on the dumbing down agenda in American Universities after American students raised by their parents with good moral values became “over educated” during the sixties in our formerly great education system. Too much education, especially in the Liberal Arts taught these kids to think and what the U.S. was really doing around the world. Then with the good values they had been taught the kids set about doing crazy things like stopping wars and ruining Daddy Warbucks big money parade. The Elite were not pleased.

The response was a 1975 report, “A Crisis of Democracy" - On the Governability of Democracies" to The Trilateral Commission. The report was written by Samuel P. Huntington, Michel Crozier and Joji Watanuki and directed by none other than Zbigniew Brzezinski.

The report’s authors decided that all the hell that was raised in the 60s and early 70s was the result of too much education of too many people and that they were thinking too much. Worst of all, they were acting on their well informed thoughts. This made them hard (for the elite) to govern. Thus began the great dumb down and most state colleges became more like fancy trade schools whereas the elite schools maintained the liberal arts tradition with obvious limits.

This much ado about nothing student activism would seem to act to insure that the students are too busy to start raising hell about anything of real consequence. Since the Liberal Arts has been downplayed for almost 50 years now the students with out guidance from “Liberal" professors are much easier targets for this kind of manipulation and often end up giving protest a bad name.

Thus we have a win, win, win, situation for our elite Fascist rulers.

You have these networks of people who think they are the country's intellectual cream, not wholly unreasonable, but then they dont ever doubt themselves and they perpetually box out smarter people.

Just like those schools box out asians so that jews can be overrepresented x8/10.

Non jewish whites are def under representted.

Basically - "diversity" for underqualified blacks and latinos is paid for by asians and whites but not jews who are very overrepresented

Meaning that while jews have been leaders in advocating 'diversity' so an admitted group roughly 'reflects the population, jews themselves have exempted themselves.

If 2.5% is 20% - it is axiomatic that the principles of 'diversity' are used primarily to benefit said group.

Period.

It also correlates with wealth, of course.

But it would be 'antisemitism ' to suggest jews, too, be something closer to their demographic %. powerful magic word, that.

Of course if we banned considering race las a factor - heres the important point - blacks and latinos would lose out, but jews would lose most of all. Theyd be over representted because they are "smart" but nowhere near current levels.

asians would eat their breakfast in the maths and sciences.

Sorry.

But they would, and one day - will.

Sorry.

Serious question:

Is it fascist to call for a publicly-funded gov't employee to resign or be fired IF AND ONLY IF they did something fascist to someone else in line with their political opinion/beliefs?

For instance, it could be said that Lois Lerner was expressing her political beliefs in targeting conservative Tea Party groups while working as a public official for the IRS. Is it fascism to call for her ouster?

Kim Davis claims she was expressing her religious beliefs (in a political setting) when she refused to perform gay marriages while working as a public official for her local county gov't. Is it fascism to call for her ouster?

The same thing can be said of MANY of these proto-fascist professors on publicly-funded campuses--where exactly is the moral and ethical line drawn?

In other words, as a taxpayer, do I have to continue to fund someone else's fascist behavior in order to not be fascist myself? I'm talking only about taxes--money taken by force from me. For instance, it is entirely voluntary if I want to spend money or not at Chick-fil-a after their supposedly anti-gay stance. That is not what I am talking about.

This article doesn't cover this grey area. I am genuinely curious what the author's thoughts are on this...

Well if you call what she did 'expressing' her beliefs then you could say the same about assassinating your political opponents. 'Expressing' in the context of this article, and I imagine as understood by most people, refers to stating, writing or otherwise disseminating your opinions or beliefs.

Lerner broke the law and as a government executive was targeting citizens using government funds and personnel, may not be fascism but certainly is de-facto communism.

Lois Lerner should be hung from a pike by her pussy, but what she did IS NOT COMMUNIST. Using the power of government to harass people with different views IS NOT COMMUNISM. Yes, Communists do it, but so do democracies. For example, how did the US treat real, actual communists back in the late 40's? If you don't think the Rosenbergs and friends were harassed by the US gov't, you obviously have never heard of Joe McCarthy.

HARASSMENT by gov't for opposing political views in the United States is a crime, as it's effective denial of First Amendment rights. But it's not Communism.

The thing is, so many freakin' Americans start shrieking "Communist!!" at any thing they dislike, most rational people turn their ears off. Learn to use the right terms, and we might start to listen.

Agreed. G Edward Griffin takes this view:

"How Socialism, Communism, Fascism are All the Same"

There isn't a lot of difference between them.

The point is that when it comes down to it, both groups are totalitarian by nature and both groups ultimately use jackboots to enforce their will.

In about one year, we are going to recognize and some will celebrate the 500th anniversary of a most important event in human history, and that person attributed to that event ..

Though our children live in the midst of a Christian world,
they faint and perish in misery because they lack the Gospel in
which we should be training and exercising them all the time. I
advise no one to place his child where the Scriptures do not
reign paramount. Schools will become wide-open gates of hell if
they do not diligently engrave the Holy Scriptures on young
hearts. Every institution where men are not increasingly occupied

Thank You! A Fascist State is one where the Government and Private Industry are joined - the author fails to mention that. BTW, if you didn't already know it, Yale teaches students how to make a very good living being a good little Fascist in this very country.
Ex. While we were focused on the Iran agreement in July, a hacking trial by a grand jury was finding guilty 4 Lead operatives (3 Israeli nationals) and one Jewish guy from NY. Why didn't the MSM tell us that there was an organized crime ring of hackers boring into our banking and brokerage accounts?

Because where it isnt a jewish guy directly calling the shots it is someone afraid of jewish groups screaming at his bosses about how antisemitic it is to cover such stories IFF the perps were jews.

Which should be obvious by now.

By the way re 'canards' - go ahead and find as many msm news sources as you can where there are not a number of jewish people in the very top positions of management or ownership. Since the 'canard' is re 2.5% of the gen pop - this should be an easy task.

"A Fascist State is one where the Government and Private Industry are joined [...]"

This is true according to Mussolini. Whereas in the case of (say) Marxism, it believes that the means of production should be owned by the State, not by private corporations. But since in both cases The State exercises control over the corporations (either thru ownership, by law, regulation, State reps on the boards or corrupt relations), it doesn't make a lot of difference who owns it. The big German industries in the 1930s were a classic example of how deeply integrated they were into Hitler's Nazi party to the point where he had henchmen on their Boards directing investment in R&D and production etc.

This is one reason why a number of learned people have long argued that Nazis were actually Marxists.

If there is a Left-Right spectrum, fascism clearly sits on the authoritarian extreme Left, but the moderate/progressive Left have always argued otherwise to distance itself from the horrors it commits (eg Hitler).

In the UK, HRH Tony Blair was a classic example of a socialist who drifted into fascism once he got control of the levers of power. A fascist psychopath from his collar studs to boot laces.

well if the ZH forum practised what this guy preaches... We would have less hate rants here and more reasoned dialogues.

Who can be against free speech?

Having said that the term Proto-fascism is a top down process; aka TPTB talking down to the unwashed.

So students do not in general have the POWER to impose on FACULTy members their "fascist Fatwas" of "STFU" type rants.

In reality it IS the OTHER way round; proto-fascism is when the Oligarchs say : move on nothing here to see! Unfortunately, in a world of regulatory capture by the Oligarchs we see that all the time.

ZH is now becoming more and more a site where we preach One thing and point to the INNOCENT as the designated Bogeymen! Students are those designated.

In a world where the Generational gap is making the young millenials the victims of this financial scam worldwide ORGANISED by the Old and corrupt who BOW to their own fiancialized proto-fascism day and night.

Hey Bill Barlow the PROTO FASCISM is on the OTHER FOOT !

Fascism which is the Doctrine of an ideological cum militarist elite "loves to pour oil on the fire of populist rage". Think Hitler and Mussolini in the 1920s... So populism and mob violence is their tool for stirring up the masses. This creates a reaction, in those times it was the Commie mobs who considered fascism as the enemy.

Today the dialectical debate in society is between the people and the financial oligarchy linked to crony politicians; TPTB cabal; who will use the same tactics and use racial and economic divides to whip up populist ire, on both sides of the populist divide IN ORDER TO GET THEIR OWN ELECTED. That is always STEP 1 in the Republican process of a "managed democracy"; even if it be functioning in inverted totalitarian mode.

The question here is : in a working democracy we should know how to avoid that the extremes of "Hoi Oligoi" and "hoi polloi", to use Pericles's phraseology, get the upper hand in the nation state's political debate at the expense of the middle class, which is the foundation of democracy. Once the split hardens into "rich" and poor" on social lines; "old" and "young" on intergeneration lines; employed and unemployed; hard left and hard right; the cement of society and democratic republic decays very fast.

Ask yourself : Is the GOp and Donald Trump for the middle ground?

Those you call "mob" in the IVY LEAGUE faculties are the best and brightest of our young!

Now I don't know how those faculties, who produce the stalwarts that work for all the think tanks and hi-flying corporates; Mckinsey, GS, Hfs, Boston Consulting, Silicon Valley Hi-tech, can be qualified as the breeding ground of Marxist thinking. Most of these guys end up working for the State or Pentagon or for the scions of Oligarchy capitalism.

Haha, unless you think that Ben B and J Yell are COMMIES, like Buffet, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg.

These students have no power other then what their careers will generate later on.

Their only power today is to scream their hormonal impulses and their desire to succeed up the Beanstalk of real Oligarchy  Power! (And their fears of being sidelined in that inevitable rat race by the current doldrums of economic stagflation.)

Go back and look at the Frankfurt School and Cultural Marxism.

This I guess is a form of fascism, since both are totalitarian systems, but the current campus stuff is based on Political Correctness/Cultural Marxist philosophy.

Hitler's rise  to power scattered the academic Marxists in Frankfurt to the UK and USA; here they went to work at Harvard, Columbia, etc.
***
The history of the School is quite interesting. By the late 1920s, the Itellectual Communists figured out the Proletariat was not going to rise up, since too many working people had some form of diversions, made a bit of money, could find an education, etc etc.

They decided to continue the "revolution" they must attack the foundation of western society: its morals, free speech, traditions, and codes of honor, thus what we see today.

Face the facts.  We are living in a National Socialist State. For those of you who don't understand (most of the college students today), that is NAZI for short.

The only difference is this form of Nazism is using hatred of Whites as its race card. The hilarious part of this is many of the ignorant Whites are joining the cause and hating themselves. This same process is occurring in Europe as well with massive Muslim influxes.

This will eventually lead to a knock down drag out race war the likes of which few have ever seen.

Remember these types of regimes when they take hold result in millions of deaths - just look at Spain, Italy, Japan, and Germany in the last century.

And for those of you who look to Communism, the results are the same. In fact, the death toll in Communism comes a lot faster than in Facism. I mean Hitler was a mere picker with a couple of deaths compared to Stalins tens of millions by 1935. Same with Mao.

Give it another financial disaster and more race violence and in a few more years the major violence will be unstoppable.

This is what comes from progressive society and socialism.

All I got from that video is that the black chick should have been restrained and maybe tazered, but, because she's black, and definitely NOT of privilege, she has a right to shout and threaten and protest and swear and throw down like a common street thug.

Believe it or not, there were people like her when I went to college in the early 70s, so, really, nothing on college campuses has really changed, except, I guess, that getting chicks drunk and high and fucking their brains out is now considered rape. (Seriously, I - and most of my friends - would have been locked up and they'd have thrown away the key.)

In general, most of the shit that happens on college campuses should be ignored, as it's just silluy shit done by kids. Now, if they start taking over admin buildings, burning stuff, and the police and national guard gets called in, and they're actually are making a point, well then maybe we can pay them some heed.

Until then, I'll just laugh it off and wait for the next banker scam. Really, bankers are better villians, any day.

But, as others have written, college life is insular.  The outside world will only step in if buildings start getting burned.

Halloween costumes - I remember when college boys got stoned on campus for wearing ROTC Uniforms.

So, what did the Trustees do - they banned ROTC.  Problem solved.

However, the students were still dissatisfied - so they started to burn buildings - of course - not to destroy property - but just as mere act of protest.

There's also a big problem in society regarding lack of timely and appropriate repurcussions for destructive and socially undesirable behavior. No one endures any consequences for being rude, brash, vulgar - you know, stuff our mom or dad used to immediately smack us in the mouth for as kids. We learned that the behavior was unacceptable first (you know, like 3 or 4), and then learned why it was unacceptable after we were capable of processing higher order thought.

Now, we simply are expected to take it becuase, well, nothing can be done about it. This has the effect of implicitly condoning and further incubating the behavior.

Will any of these children be expelled, or punished at all for that matter, for screaming f-bombs at and spitting on a professor? Behaviors that would get you immediately fired?
