Welcome To Crickhowell - The Entire Welsh Town That Just Went 'Offshore'

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Simon Black via SovereignMan.com,

On September 25, 1794, US President George Washington issued a proclamation authorizing the use of military force against a group of defiant citizens.

It had all started a few years before when a handful of politicians had succeeded in passing an excise tax on liquor, something that became known as the Whiskey Tax.

The Whiskey Tax was the brainchild of Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, who was under pressure to pay off the government’s debts from the Revolutionary War.

The thing is, much of the debt had been originally owed to soldiers who fought in the war. They had been paid in IOUs, many of which had been scooped up by bankers in New York for pennies on the dollar.

Hamilton had family connections to prominent New York banks– the first example of Wall Street infiltrating the Treasury Department. It wouldn’t be the last.

(Over 200 years later, the American taxpayer would again be on the hook to bail out banks.)

Back then the Whiskey Tax was a big deal. America was a ‘whiskey nation’.

Whiskey was such a prevalent part of American culture in the 1790s, in fact, that it was even commonly used as a medium of exchange in parts of the country.

So you can imagine that the government’s intent to tax whiskey distillation was met with pockets of staunch opposition, especially once people found out that the entire reason for the tax was to pay back the New York bankers.

In some cases the opposition was militant. Parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia swelled with local resistance to the point that people began physically assaulting federal tax collectors and forming rebel militias.

Washington eventually had to dispatch federal troops (which he personally commanded) to put down the insurrection.

The rebels lost. But this conflict between government and the taxpayer continued to run deep.

It still exists to this day. It’s ingrained in the DNA of the nation, and in every free individual around the world.

At its core, taxation is an elaborate form of theft based on deeply flawed premises that we all have a claim on each others’ earnings, and that the government knows how to spend your own money better than you do.

There are certainly some places where people do receive value for the taxes that they pay.

Norwegians are commonly cited as tolerating their incredibly high levels of taxation because they receive relatively good quality medical care, education, etc. in return.

But for most people in the West, taxes fund wars, debt, dropping bombs on brown people by remote control, and yes, bailing out banks.

It’s perfectly natural to be enraged at such immoral waste, and people deal with it in different ways.

Some take the approach that if we’re going to be screwed then we should all be screwed together, equally.

They throw childish temper tantrums when anyone uses perfectly legal means to reduce their taxes, labeling them ‘tax dodgers’.

Usually this is an emotion grounded in petty jealousy and ignorance, wanting everyone to be equally miserable, and failing to realize that tax mitigation solutions are open to everyone.

Right now there’s actually an entire town in Wales called Crickhowell that is ‘protesting’ how big businesses use the tax code to slash what they owe.

They’re angered that Facebook, Google, Amazon, etc. pay very little tax.

And to voice their frustration, the butcher, the baker, and candlestick maker decided to employ the exact same tax strategies used by big companies to reduce their own tax burdens.

As the proprietor of the local smokery put it, the plan is “jolly clever.”

Clever indeed. Because they’ll soon realize the tremendous power and freedom of using completely legal solutions to keep more of what you’ve earned.

Doing this is not immoral or unpatriotic.

In fact, if you believe that your government makes your country worse off and less free, then reducing the financial resources available to them is a highly effective expression of patriotism.

Rather than people whining about everyone else paying less tax, it would be a much better use of time to learn about ways to reduce their own taxes.

This is a far more powerful way of voicing your opposition to a government than standing in a voting booth. And you’ll be better off financially as well.

To be fair, most of these concepts aren’t far fetched or complicated.

How many of us have gone shopping at a duty-free store in order to save a few bucks from not paying taxes?

Plenty of people already incorporate businesses in no-tax states like Delaware. Or they’ll work in a place like Boston (high tax) but live nearby in New Hampshire (zero tax).

There are plenty of other solutions. US taxpayers who live on investment income can move down to the beach in Puerto Rico and pay 0% tax.

Or you can move abroad and earn over $100,000 per year (per spouse) tax free.

There are also more complicated solutions such as setting up captive insurance companies to reduce business profits tax, trust structures to eliminate estate tax, and much more.

These aren’t ‘loopholes’ where you need teams of lawyers to misuse or take advantage of some cryptic language in the tax code.

It’s all right there in black and white, part of the law.

Criticizing a very sensible, legal strategy to keep more of what you earn is like criticizing someone for driving the speed limit, claiming that it’s some sort of traffic ‘loophole’.

There are completely legal options out there for everyone. Taking advantage of them just makes sense.

^^ 60+% of the U.S. Budget is paying U.S. citizens to either enjoy their retirement, enjoy their disability, or enjoy their unemployment. Less than 30% of it goes to wars.

If you want to talk about wars, lets talk about the war on the free-shit-army.

Town Moves Offshore to Avoid Taxes - #NewWorldNextWeek

i agree with james corbett's take on it - i'm all in favor of the people "offshoring" to avoid taxes, just not as a protest to get the government to close loopholes and crack down. let's get past this archaic notion that government ought to be supported - they are oppressors, let them collapse, let's build our own voluntary communities instead.

Haven't looked at the video (I will) but, my first impression when I read the original article was of disgust. Not at their actions of "going off shore" to avoid paying taxes but at their reasons. Tame, lame brained, meek slaves envious that their master's buddies are getting away with not paying taxes. There are even several quotes from the store owners proudly proclaiming that they pay their taxes in full and do not mind it, they just want corporations to also pay their "fair share". Poppycock! Fair share of what? Theft? If I am robbed at gunpoint I am angered at the thief, not at my neighbor who did not get robbed. This spineless subjects of the Queen are enjoying their chains. So, I hope their masters make them heavier.

Sorry Simon but if you work in Boston and live in NH then you pay Mass income and NH property taxes.  The key is to live in NH and work for an NH company that does business in MA and then buy everything you need to buy in NH (no sales tax).  I wouldn't even get gas in MA unless it was something I ate.

Back that up please.  50%?  I double friggin dare you to back that up with some credible link.

And beyond that what would tax dollars be better spent on pray tell?  Military drones? Bank bailouts?  corruption?  Tell me where the sin is here?  Look at US premiums on healthcare and give your head a simple shake.  What does the average family pay for health care in Ontario?  Family of 4 I guess is maybe $180/month (an most employers pick up some cost and most lower income is subsidized or free).  Cost in US privatized yet taxed system?  Cost to a family of 4?????God only knows how much $ has been legislated to private insurers to cover basic health.

Back up what you say kid.  Canada made choices decades ago that put tax dollars to work for the actual people who paid the taxes.  What is wrong with taking tax money and funding health?  Some reason why it should be diverted into military? Taxes paid by working people in Canada form a "buying power" co-op to provide health care,  infrastructure, policing, things that benefit the taxpayer.

Do you wish to spend $2500/month for privatized for-profit health care?  I would suggest that if you look at the Ontario budget you look first at how much is spent on debt servicing and various other follies of the past.

Comparing a government sinkhole of waste (Canada) to private sinkholes of waste (insurance companies) is stupid and pointless.

Why can't we get BOTH government AND insurance companies out of the health care business, and just go back to cash for services? As soon as we do that, health care costs will plummet by 90%, and we can all go back to living our lives.

What I said.

https://thinkpatriot.wordpress.com/2015/07/09/starve-the-beast-scaling-s...

And :

https://thinkpatriot.wordpress.com/patriot-games/

The government cannot possibly win, have only a couple of years left in their kleptocracy before it collapses, and are still pushing for power.

Players, histories, dynamics of the situation say a reallly big false flag is next.  They have set Russia up for a reason might be sufficiently paranoid.

9/11 was a false flag.  Crank that into your thinking about players and power and dynamics and control of the media and what you think as a result of all that.  Not what you think about it, what you think as a result of it.  What are your blind spots?

How much of the Israeli-Neocon propaganda have you allowed into your mind?  That is what allows the wars, and the wars are allowing all the chaos that keeps this insane system running a while longer.  They need the chaos to justify their existence, otherwise we would hang them all tomorrow.

If you don't know that 9/11 was a false flag, please go and study the evidence. Architects and Engineers for 911 Truth is a reliable group, start there.  This is a science and engineering issue, has nothing to do with conspiracy theory.  It is the most important event in American history.  The people who did it must have been certifiable.  Quite a major roll of the dice, big big stakes.  Those people are still alive, and don't want the world to start pointing investigators in their direction.  They need the chaos, and will soon need a coup.

Where are our senior intelligence and military people to explain the very many dangers in the idiocy of our national strategies, wars, allies, militarism, empire?  All empires die of military spending.

I still cannot get over that it is entirely legal to have two sets of books.

1)  One for reporting to shareholders, thereby motivated to have the highest revenue in hopes of justifying a higher share price and;

2)  The other a set of books designed to hide and minimize revenue to decrease taxes...

Tax IS theft; regardless what it is used for. If you enter my restaurant, order food, consume it and pay the bill, that is a voluntary transaction. If I go to your home, present you a bill, threaten you with kidnapping or death if you do not pay it, it doesn't matter if I latter serve you a meal, you had no choice, it  was violently coherced therefore theft. Morally there is no difference weather I am wearing jeans or a suit and a badge when I demand you money, it remains theft. The semantic differences were introduced as control measures to insure your compliance. The King is England and England is the King trains you on the idea that to be a proud Britton, enjoying the favors of the King, you must happily submit to his authority. But what makes a King/President/government flunky so special that they can steal form you, kidnap you or order your death? Nothing. Only the idea that they are moraly entitled to your obedience.

Taxation IS a protection racket, by any reasonable definition.

Government steals from EVERYONE that isn't part of the connected group and promises to look after you in your old age so you accept the theft. Time to make 'em live up to their promises or face the consequences.

You fail to mention that almost none of those "completely legal options" to reduce tax are available to the vast majority of Americans who obtain the bulk of their income from payroll employment.  For workers, as opposed to speculators and the self-employed small businesspeople (endangered by mounds of complex regulations which sap mountains of cash to pay "experts" to untangle), there is no alternative to taxation.  The tax is removed from your pay long before you ever see it.  You may recoup a part of it through clever tax filings, but you begin from a position of weakness: the IRS ALREADY HAS YOUR MONEY and you have to beg them to give it back -- sometime next year.
