In Oregon There Are Now More Marijuana Shops Than Starbucks Or McDonalds

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by John Vibes via TheAntiMedia.org,

In the state of Oregon, where marijuana for recreational purposes was legalized just over a month ago, there are already more retail marijuana shops than there are McDonald’s or Starbucks.

According to Oregon’s Health Authority, there are 281 marijuana businesses in the state due to the fact that there was already a vast network of medical dispensaries there. When legalization kicked in, these dispensaries were able to quickly repurpose themselves as retail outlets. This allowed the industry to grow much quicker in Oregon than it did in Colorado or Washington.

In Oregon, there were over 250 medical marijuana dispensaries that were immediately able to sell to recreational customers, while in Colorado there were just 24 retailers open on the first day of legalization — and Washington had only four.

In fact, in Oregon, the cannabis industry is already becoming as visible as major fast food corporations, with more locations in the state than both Starbucks and McDonald’s. They have 248 and 205 locations, respectively.

It is important to mention that many different businesses and owners make up the 281 marijuana shops across the state, while Starbucks and McDonald’s are individual businesses. For example, the total number of marijuana shops are not being compared to the total number of fast food or coffee shops, but to specific fast food and coffee corporations. However, it still shows how marijuana is quickly becoming a very important part of the economy and of pop culture.

According to Business Insider, Oregon already has the second-highest number of medical marijuana patients, running close behind Colorado.

The state sold over $11 million dollars worth of marijuana in the first week of legalization. The sales in Oregon in the first week actually outshined both Colorado and Washington.

In Colorado, sales reached nearly $5 million in the first week, while Washington retailers made just $2 million in that state’s first week of sales.

As with the retail locations in Colorado and Washington, many of Oregon’s shops are concentrated in major cities like Portland, with only a few locations in rural areas.

The growing marijuana industry is not only extremely lucrative, but it is also a more gender-equal environment than many other businesses. As we reported last month, there are more female executives in the marijuana industry than there are in any other industry.

Write to your congressman or directly to the drug company that manufactures marijuana and ask them to stop the manufacture of marijuana.  Pretty simple solution.

Now see this:

Uploaded on Aug 15, 2010

Produced by the US Government in 1942...Interesting to learn that Dupont Chemical funded the anti- hemp / marijuana effort. This is because they had patents on new synthetic fibers and Hemp had a new machine that would put them out of business if hemp were to be used for clothes. Dupont also sold - and still does many of the chemicals to wood pulp producers... so we continue to cut down forests... when Hemp could save millions of trees, be used as an alternative bio fuel and the US could easily grow enough hemp to eliminate the need for oil... so Big oil does not want hemp legal either. Neither do the drug companies... they can't patent it. They would rather keep selling you their drugs. By keeping it illegal the lawyers, courts etc... also make a buck. You can only get high from the female flower - nobody has ever died from smoking a joint. Of course the alcohol and tobacco companies would prefer to keep their monopoly as well. So we have all the BIG Corporate players... against legalizing it. Yet if it were legalized - we would solve many issues and have a multi billion dollar hemp economy as it can be used for 1000's of products.

Mixed on massive legalization especially but the treating marijuana as an illegally controlled substance has clearly has been a failed policy for 50 years.  Time to try something else but I am concerned about the number of people who are reportin addiction signs which has notably jumped according to the most recent figures from the NESARC survey in the oct 21 issue of JAMA.

You don't suppose some of those professionals face the standard coflict of interest as they define and measure hard to define and measure things like 'addiction to marijuana'.

It is rather clear that, if you define addiction as 'something producing physical withdrawal symptons', there are many fewer addictive things in the world than would keep all of the world's psychologists and psychiatrists employed.

And the free market kills the drug smuggling trade, makes it uneconomic. Drug consumers no longer need to spend huge sums on their addiction of choice don't need to finance their habit through crime.

Sorry, 1971, but now the drug pushers and cartels, who are more business savvy and more diabolical, will produce STRONGER merry-wanny to lure more clientele. Do you think they are that stew-pid, to just turn tail and walk away, with an ocean of stupidity called the American gringo, who prefers pleasure before work, who in front of children tell them loudly,"SAY NO TO DRUGS!!!!!!" and behind their backs smoke the biggest blunt around? There's a lot of money in stupidity, my friend. News at 11: Oregon is experiencing a surge in crime due to an influx of highly powerful marijuana, manufactured by cartels in South America.

Having grown up on a farm and having farmer relatives, I have some idea of progress in normal areas by standard university research. Laughable.

Well Maryjane can only get to about 18% thc maybe a little more....now you can add chemical drugs to as which some cartels do... but then it is not maryjane any more then is it!

I agree that it should be grown for commercial sale, monitoring the chemicals/ pesticides being used to grow it with, I am sure it is not safe to smoke pot that is covered in some pesticide, this must be done for "sale"

But you should also be allowed to grow it organically in your own garden....

Marijuana and alcohol are stumbling blocks to the lesser bretheran. Whole segments of human society have been decimated by these twin evils.

Decriminilization is an option-but in no way should they receive the States imprimatur " legalization",[ taxation]

This goes for gambling as well.

Sat, 11/14/2015 - 16:58 | 6793486 MeBizarro
MeBizarro's picture

So the solution is keeping it illegal especially things such as alcohol and gambling which are done by wide segments of American society?  They would just be run by organized crime as they were historically done through out the 20th century.

Well the problem with decriminalization is that it does nothing to stop the black market money drug smugling gang wars with shootings in the streets.

The only way to take the money and gangwars out of the equation is to legalize it....

Love articles like this - if for nothing else but that they serve to strip naked those who talk 'freedom' out one side, but call for Authoritarianism when it comes to suit their ideological preferences on what people choose to do to themselves and for themselves, out the other side...

If you're pounding beers/alcohol (and more power to you if you are), pain-killers, anti-depressants, etc., ad-nauseam, You Too are a 'drug user'.   Fact is, if all drugs were made legal, crimes that are associated with illegal substances today, would basically disappear almost overnight.    This is all about CONTROL, and the Control Freaks who need to get their Control-on in order to feel viable.

Drugs and Alcohol don't make you feel good, they just make you feel not so bad. They make a bad situation better without solving the problem which is not a good thing.

They do have their purpose and I've done my fair share of the green and the grain, never the hard stuff. Gave everything up quite awhile ago except the occasional glass of wine with dinner.

It should all be legalized and take the money we spend fighting the war on drugs and put it to rehab, AA (alcohol is far and away the biggest gateway to all drugs) and alternatives treatments.

There's no drug or drink that I've taken that even comes close to a healthy active lifestyle with real whole food. The best part of a healthy lifestyle is you can easily get up the next day and do it all over again. Not so much with drugs and alcohol.

I hear you, no hangovers whatsover with weed.  I've seen with many people that smoke weed they drink a lot less alcohol or nothing at all, which is good.  Plus, you really don't want to drive, especially if you're really stoned and it doesn't make you violent.  It really is rediculous that it's outlawed like it is in some states.

Don't get me started on the nonviolent drug offenders in jail that were caught in some state like GA with a joint and sent to jail, while drunk drivers get probabation and go to rehab paid for by the state.
