Yes, research in most fields is a scam. But the few in this case, do outweight the many. All the tech you see around you was at one point developed in a university. Online universities are a much much much bigger scam. I have a huge issue with your assertion that this would be better.
I took an online course once, got an A, did absolutely no work, the test was a joke as I could just open another tab with Google and get all my answers that way. So, the only way to make it work would be to have classes online (participation optional) and then just have one or two massive standardized test a year.

I dont think that system works well either. I think a system should reward hard work/ambition, over a persons innate testing ability. Some people are just calm and relaxed and can take tests better than others. Doesnt mean that the ones who cant wont grow out of a phase, or just think slower, or have a nervous tic, or whatever the reason may be. The system should not punish those who genuinely know the material and want to do well but are simply different in some way that negativley impacts their test score.
Also, why teach kids that sitting next to a computer is indeed, all they have to live for? The best things I learned in college could not be learned online. Yes, it does include how to shotgun a beer...life lessons.

I have a high school senior and high school junior that are looking at colleges. They are bright kids and spent their entire education in public schools but I am seriously thinking about home schooling them for college. They have been brought up to question everything and I fear that they will be "jailed" in college for questioning something. Why spend $30k per year to have these lunatics bothering them while they try to get educated?
Send them to a trade school. I know a dog groomer in a sleepy little town who rakes in $300/day, from home, beautifying dogs. She has a waiting list a mile long too.......

If you want to go into Engineering or Medicine you have no choice. Best to get a scholarship if it means that much. If not, fuck it and do not bother going to Uni at all. Yes, it is getting that bad.
If you make or influence hiring decsions, and feel like wasting a stamp, write Yale and tell them that a graduate of their institution will always be your last choice, due to this sort of crap. The sad truth is that the black community, by and large, embraced government as its care giver 50 years ago and now realize its not a good parent. It doesn't make sure you do your homework. It doesn't make sure you learn anything at all. So now you're at college completely unqualified and under-prepared and you're taking freshman (high school) algebra, reading at a 5th grade level, and so you major in African-American studies where you're told that the reason you are uneducated, why you are more likely to have grown up in a single parent household, why you are more likely to earn less than other minorities is because you are black and your ancestors were likely slaves. So you are basically told your lot in life is sealed because your are black so what do you do? You use guilt to try to extort every last bit you can. Unfortunately, there can only be a few Al Sharptons or Jesse Jacksons because (they would understand this if they majored in economics instead of African American studies) the more people try to sell the "you're not racist" label, the lower the price will go.
