The French Campaign Begins: Hollande Launches "Massive Bombardment" Of ISIS Capital

Tyler Durden's picture

Moments ago, reports began to surface on social media that the ISIS "capital" of Raqqa was under siege from the sky.

It wasn't hard to guess whose planes were carrying out the strikes. As we noted ten days ago, in a statement by the French presidency following a meeting of its defense cabinet, the government said it would send its only aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle warship, to the eastern Mediterranean for operations against Isis in both Syria and Iraq. And as you might imagine, that's not the only place Paris has warplanes stationed in the region.

Just yesterday we said that with the only French aircraft carrier already en route to Syria, meant to support to mission against Assad ISIS, France is oddly prepared for an all out attack to take out the Syrian president. Most importantly, it now has the outraged, incensed public's blessing to do just that.

Sure enough, we just got confirmation that France, with the help of US intelligence, has commenced a "major" bombing campaign against Raqqa.

And so it begins.

From WSj, earlier today:

The U.S. is expanding intelligence sharing with France and has agreed to speed the delivery of detailed targeting information in support of possible French retaliatory strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq, officials said.

In response to Friday’s coordinated terrorist attacks in Paris, the U.S. has started sharing so-called “targeting packages” with France, identifying Islamic State targets for strikes by French warplanes. It also plans to roll back restrictions that impede intelligence sharing to make it easier for France to intensify its air campaign.

Officials said the changes amount to giving France a seat at the table alongside America’s most-trusted intelligence-sharing partners in developing future target packages for strikes against Islamic State.

France has fighter aircraft positioned at bases in the region, in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, which could be used in any retaliatory strikes against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq once targets have been identified.

Of course the US has supposedly been "bombarding" Raqqa and other ISIS strongholds for more than year, to little effect. It's not exactly like Raqqa is the Japanese mainland ca. World War II. As we noted earlier today, we're no West Point graduates, but it seems likely that a relatively small ground contingent could take the city with the help of the Kurds in relatively short order (see the recent experience with Sinjar):

And it's not like the US or the French have to worry about running into the Russians in the course of providing air cover. After all, Russia has for now pretty much conceded that airspace to the US while Moscow and Tehran restore Assad's power base in the West. Just take a look at the Russian airstrike map (it's not up to the minute, but you get the idea):

So now that the French airstrikes have officially begun, the next question is whether the attacks in Paris are enough to get the public behind sending in the ground troops to finally end this ridiculous charade and take Raqqa once and for all.

Of course that blows the whole anti-Assad gambit wide open. That is, once Raqqa falls and ISIS retreats into Iraq, what then? Then you'll have the French in the east and the Russians and Iranians in the west, and by then, Russia and Iran will have probably taken Aleppo so everyone will be just be staring at each other with Assad looking nervously back and forth in the middle.

At that point, it's either NATO versus Russia and Iran for the political future of Syria, or someone packs up and leaves and then the suits reconvene in Vienna. And given that Russia has an airbase at Latakia and a naval base at Tartus, and given that NATO would have to pry Damascus out the Ayatollah's cold dead hands, we think we know who may blink first...

Closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. This is showboating and does nothing to address the core problem, which is the presence of tens of millions of Muslims in Europe. A presence the likes of Hollande and the other traitors did everything in their power to enable all along. Blowing the shit out of yet another Arab city will make things worse is anything.

French targets confirmed! "The first target destroyed was used as a command center, a center for preparation of jihadists and an ammunition depot. The second target was a camp for training of terrorists,"

The USA has hit the same targets for a year, Russia has upped that by 10X on many of the same targets, now the French! WTF! How many command posts do these fuckers have

ISIS cannot be defeated FOR DECADES, because jihadis don't wear uniforms and congregate in large numbers.

Just like the suni Iraqi troops threw away their uniforms and came back later as insurgents.  You didn't think we really defeated them in 3 days, did you?

When every ME nation becomes peaceful and civilized, ISIS will have no place to hide and can be defeated.  Anybody see that happening in the next 100 years?

Why would they waste nukes?

Its not like ISIS hangs out in large groups of 10,000 or more fighters in one strategic area.

More like 10,000 fighters spread out over Syria and Iraq.

Image. Hollande needs to make an impression, and nukes would make a very big impression, as:
a. No nukes used in war since 1945;
b. No (generally visible) explosions since 1960's test ban - but these will be in front of world's cameras;

And the explosions are a long way from France.
And shows the world that French nukes actually work - last tests years ago.

Target area worthless desert.

Like Putin, Hollande likes to dwell on his next move before acting. s/c

I could be way off and this was all planned in a MOD meeting of the Mindless weeks ago. If there was ANY logic to the French Response it would be bombing its own inner-cities and across it's border into Belgium.

What bothers me most about all this (besides the passports) is that it now "conveniently" appears that all terrorists are dead so in fact there is nobody to talk yet again. Recall how the same thing happened during the January attacks. I was wondering why the spec ops went into that concert hall so fast (unless the terrorists already began executing hostages en masse), recall a similar hostage situation in Russia many years ago where it took DAYS... they say they don't negotiate with terrorists, but how can waiting a couple of hours harm in a no win situation anyway?!

Sun, 11/15/2015 - 19:03 | 6797328 Sparehead
Sparehead's picture

They're not all dead. In an accidentally honest statement Obama stated ISIS (or as he insists ISIL) is on the run. That became true when the Russians became serious about killing them, and they ran to (or back to) Europe. There were no "spec ops" storming the Bataclan Concert Hall, those were police and I wouldn't call 2 hours fast, at least not to those stuck inside.

Sun, 11/15/2015 - 19:16 | 6797383 localizer
localizer's picture

I was referring to the group that carried out the Paris attacks, there are indeed conficting reports in various sources as to how many there were... obviously a hunt is underway in Belgium now as well. My point about the "spec ops" (fine, those were police "spec ops" not regular units) is that unless the hostages were getting executed what prevented them from establishing some sort of contact? I mean surely there can be no harm in trying, is there? Hundred innocent people were slaughtered in that hall anyway during this op... so there are still questions remaining as to whether this was the correct course of action.

My mistake, I misread part of your post. As for the timing, I wouldn't be surprised if it took two hours to assemble the French equivalent of a SWAT team, get them fully equipped, and deployed to the location. It's not like those guys are sitting around on standby. They do operate in the false sense of security of a large scale "gun-free" zone. From the police's point of view the victims may already be dead and they want to go home to their own families. They'll wait until they're at least at full strength.

The question is, will France really attack ISIS (a proxy of the USSA), or will they attack the sitting government (which almost certainly had no part in recent events).

If France attacks ISIS... a secret NATO proxy and ally... things will get interesting.  For sure Kerry is calling the French and telling them to stop.

Hilarious!  This looks to be, in effect, NATO infighting.  That much is excellent news.

That is telling, like a defining moment. Considering Assad is effectively shielded by Russia I believe all France can do is lash out at ISIS in the hopes of gaining some popularity. After this attack Hollande is running very low on popularity, and telling Kerry to fuck off isn't that hard.

So is the ploy to use the false flag (see below) to replace the ISIS proxy army with a NATO proxy "democracy" army in eastern Syria to secure half instead of 100%? then use that foothold for the "moderate opposition" (who in any sense of the term if they operated inside the U.S.A. Inc. would be labeled terrorists) to create a new country as either leverage to use as a "legal" staging area that couldn't be bombed? And/Or use it to attack Assad to get what you're really after?

So we have..
1. Repeatedly unlawfully violating the air space of a sovereign nation without their consent
2. Attempting to unlawfully overthrow a sovereign nation with a terrorist proxy army
3. Training, funding and dropping weapons to terrorists re-marketed as "moderate rebels" so it gives the false sense of legality and since they aren't listed on any "official" terrorist list making it even more illegal than it already is
4. Refusing to cooperate with major regional and international sovereign nations that are in the country
lawfully and have already formed a unified coalition to destroy all the terrorists
5. Staging fraudulent justifications (i.e. see links below) resulting in the death, pain and suffering of millions, destruction of antiquities in order to justify and continue the unlawful actions when your bluff is called

I guess when career criminals look back after having done so many illegal acts for so long they probably figure what's a few more international war crimes among criminal allies right?

Frankly, certain parties suck at both poker and chess. Besides my offer to provide a solution that would benefit everyone was ignored so you're all to blame. All major parties handled this less than perfectly. And some had to get greedy. Take, take, take. Everyone needs a time out to learn how share and play nicely in our global sand box.

http://www.johndenugent.com/white-south-african-tragedy/

The pathological altruism of White People, especially northern whites.  A fatal problem, which may lead to the race's extinction.

..THE AFRIKANER'S CONFESSION (a sarcastic and bitter essay by a Boer)

Along with the NG Church [Netherlands/Dutch Reformed Church, which is now hyper-liberal and preaches White guilt over apartheid to the Boers with full Black-government approval] we Afrikaners who are not members of it also wish to confess.

We want to confess to all coloureds [in South Africa, the "coloured" are the mixed-race/"mulatto" South Africans, who descend from Afrikaaner fathers and Black mothers, and they speak Afrikaans; there was a lot of this racial mixing in the 1700s until it was banned by law] and blacks in the RSA for every injustice we and our ancestors committed against them. We acted like senseless fools that knew no better, and today we are genuinely sorry for each of these sins which have brought only shame and damage over us:

1. We provided doctors and free medical services to them so that they could multiply and breed uncontrollably.

2. We sent missionaries among them in an attempt to introduce the white man's God to them - all in vain.

3. We taught them to read and write and even put their own languages in writing for them. We also taught them elementary arithmetic. We built schools for them and repaired them again after they had trashed and burned them down.

4. We built factories and trained them to work in them in order to earn money - more than their black brothers have earned in any other African country.

5. We provided free housing for them, cheap transport, the protection of our police force, and when necessary, they also received free medical treatment in our best-equipped hospitals.

6. We developed farms on which we produced food in order to feed their millions of hungry stomachs.

7. We gave them clothing so that they would not have to go naked as in the time before Jan van Riebeeck, and become ill and die in the harsh winters.

8. We mined the minerals over which they trampled and regarded as worthless gravel and stone under their bare feet for centuries, and we let them share in the profits thereof. Thousands of them are still working in the mines.

9. Our women established welfare organisations to feed and clothe the destitute among them.

10. We built a network of roads on which they kill and maim us today.

11. We built huge dams in order for them to misuse water freely.

12. We spend 90% of our income on their welfare and needs and we do more for them than any other nation would do for its own people. For this the world despises us and we have lost all our self-respect.

We should not have done it! We are guilty! We are sorry!

We sincerely and humbly ask: May our black 'brethren' forgive us. Please, if possible, forgive us! We did it out of ignorance and meant well!

Looking at the situation in Syria I'd say it's almost hopeless for the west to hold influence. Almost, because it could be a distraction from the real intention of NATO: The Baltics and Ukraine. How many 'terrorists' did we see so far? 10? What if most of these paid extremists are on their way to stir up trouble at stated locations while Russia is thought to have the focus elsewhere?

We'll see. Since I can't believe NATO to be plain stupid, I think they're quite desperate; time seems to run out therefore they're forced to act.

There's always been something mentally ill about socialists like Hollande and Obama in their inability to grasp a problem, decide how to solve it and then implement that decision.  They are missing a common sense gene.  It is always all about the victim, the underdog, probably because that is how they see themselves.  Victims don't have to make decisions.  They are always the recipient of every action, like a pin cushion or a piniata.  That prevents socialists from doing the right thing; in fact, the very thing that will solve the problem.

If Hollande wanted to do the compassionate thing for the real citizens of France (or even Obama for the American People), he'd round up and remove the Muslims from the country, starting with the recent refugees, then those with dual passports, and then move on to those that go to mosques.  But there is something visceral about the make-up of a socialist that they just can't bring themselves to do what a person like Le Pen states must be done in order to save France just because a "capitalist" thought of it first or it is something a "capitalist" would do to solve the problem.

Obama has brought 40,000 or 50,000 Somali refugees into the US since he got in office.  35,000 or something in Milwaukee and 9,000 in Salt Lake City.  I don't know a bout other cities.  Most of these people had never seen a flush toilet before.  So what will they possibly do to make a living?  Sell life insurance?  Will they be financial planners?  They will not be able to assimilate.  They will generationally be on welfare.  They are therefore walking radicalizable time bombs, virtually all of them.  We need to send these people back to Crapistan where they came from and others like them, others that just don't fit in here in the US and never will.

So what will happen is that Hollande and Obama will bomb Syria instead.  It is certainly a much easier "fix."

I like the Trojan Horse analogy. But you have to do it justice. This is like building a Trojan Horse... stuffing it full of nefarious evildoers, rolling it up to the gates of the city... then the evildoers crawl out of the belly of the horse in full view of the city's defenders while horsy is still parked in front of the gate.

Yeah, a bit like premature ejaculation.

There. Fixed it for ya.

France does not seem to own any bomber aircraft:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Air_Force#Aircraft_inventory

It takes fifteen or twenty fighters to carry the load of something like a B-2, or B-1, or B-52.  Unless France wants to take some old Airbuses, fill them full of outdated cheese and bacon and crash them into Raqqa, they are incapable of delivering anything like a "massive bombardment".

amazed that there allegedly are such

worthwhile ISIS targets to bomb after the reportedly intensive year-long

US bombing of ISIS.

Apparently,  the French pilots are substantially better than the US pilots at hitting such targets.

The US pilots like instead to bomb hospitals and the civilian electrical/water infrastructure.

The French public may have some funny ideas about socialism and economic policy but they are not complete idiots, a large and possible very large portion of the French population will be very unhappy about this.  People like to run off at the mouth that the French are cowards and idiots but sometimes people forget that they were right not to want to engage in Bush's bullshit war on Iraq.  Iraq obviously wasn't responsible for 911 and while US FOX/CNN news types were going ape shit for war the French public new better.

If the French were unaware that they have lost control over their state they will definitely be in the know by now.  Hopefully they unload into the streets.

One interesting note is that the previous Allied air campaign (in Libya)  rapidly devolved onto the shoulders of those countries that operated US aircraft-- since they had only nominal inventories of bombs in their own possession. They had to borrow munitions from the US.

France, since it operates its own aircraft, was not one of those countries with US-compatible bomb racks. Ergo, this should not last very long unless other countries join the party.

If there are more terrorist attacks in Europe of elsewhere expect NATO to get involved, one thing is for sure Russia wont back out of Syria, they have drawn the line and they can't afford to.

Going into Syria full force will cause further refugee crisis and easy excuses for further "FALSE FLAG" events across the whole of Europe; you will loose you total sovereignty.  Demand weapons to protect yourselves & seize the moment!!

No few "terrorist" could coordinate such an attack against your Capital nor 9/11 without the explicit planning of the Central Planners...wake up France we are counting on you!!

Hmmmm.......

I'm surprised that everyone is surprised.

This is all according to plan, this conflict is going perfectly. You lot have to stop looking at this from a sane moral perspective. You need to think like a psychopath, once you do, its all going perfectly.

Lets review:

1. Vietnam, a sterling example of success from the psychopath perspective, from the sane moral perspective, failure,

2. WWII, failure from the psychopath perspective(too short), success from the moral sane perspective,

3. Korea, moderate success from the psychopath perspective(again, too short), failure from the moral sane perspective,

4. Afghanistan, success from the psychopath perspective, abysmal failure from the sane moral perspective,

5. Gulf war 1, 1990, success from the sane moral perspective, abysmal failure from the psychopath,

6. Iraq invasion, started out as a failure but bloomed into a sterling success from a psychopath perspective, a horrible failure from the moral sane perspective.

7. Syria? ongoing success from the psychopath perspective, a quagmire form the moral sane perspective.

8. WWI an absolute success from the psychopath perspective. A test run for fiat money and war and it was a FANTASTIC SUCCESS!!! Lessons learned; First; you can't use gold as money because then you can't finance war, Second, war is VERY profitable for the banks (to finance the debt) and the arms manufacturers.

So lets go through this:

Item 5, Old man bush was permitted to lose the 92 election BECAUSE HE WON THE GULF WAR IN 1 WEEK! Only ONE week? How in the hell is the shadow government supposed to keep the money flowing from a war that lasts only a week? WTF? Didn't bush get the memo? You can't make money off wars that last only a week? Hell. that comes right out of normal defense procurement, the government doesn't even need to go further into debt!

Vietnam was perfect...oh sure, 58,000 dead but psychopath children don't go to war, YOURS do. the psychopath's children make HUGE sums of money off war...you don't, you just bury your sons.

Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam....perfect! Keep spending money on bombs, helicopters, ammunition, spend spend spend, government has to borrow heaps, all going through the primary dealers in Wall street taking a nice 4% cut...you do know that 4% of 1T is 40 billion, right? The bigger the debt, the more money JPM and Goldman make and the best way to increase debt is war!

This all according to plan. Who wins? Who cares!!! Just as long as it draws out for as long as possible and hopefully the USA gets sucked in because then they'll spend even more. Yippie...money-money-money!

If you think like a psychopath, it all makes sense. A psychopath will NEVER let his young join the armed services for OBVIOUS reasons.

These people that occupy the state debt and then pentagon are sick....sick to the core, they are psychopaths.
