Meet The Family That Just Spent Half Its Annual Income Paying For Obamacare
Not a week passes without some incremental revelation showing precisely what happens when Congress passes a bill just to see what's in it.
Well, since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, also known as the Obamacare tax, we have watched in horror as shocker after shocker are revealed.
Some examples:

Now we can add one more thing that "was in it": soaring deductibles, which give the fake impression of contained, low all-in costs... until one actually needs expensive medial help (and these days there is no other kind).
The latest expose against Obamacare comes not from its usual nemesis, but the hard-left NYT, suggesting that even the ideological supporters of Obama's "crowning achievement" are losing faith. To wit:
Obama administration officials, urging people to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, have trumpeted the low premiums available on the law’s new marketplaces.
But for many consumers, the sticker shock is coming not on the front end, when they purchase the plans, but on the back end when they get sick: sky-high deductibles that are leaving some newly insured feeling nearly as vulnerable as they were before they had coverage.
“The deductible, $3,000 a year, makes it impossible to actually go to the doctor,” said David R. Reines, 60, of Jefferson Township, N.J., a former hardware salesman with chronic knee pain. “We have insurance, but can’t afford to use it.”
In many states, more than half the plans offered for sale through HealthCare.gov, the federal online marketplace, have a deductible of $3,000 or more, a New York Times review has found. Those deductibles are causing concern among Democrats — and some Republican detractors of the health law, who once pushed high-deductible health plans in the belief that consumers would be more cost-conscious if they had more of a financial stake or skin in the game.
“We could not afford the deductible,” said Kevin Fanning, 59, who lives in North Texas, near Wichita Falls. “Basically I was paying for insurance I could not afford to use.” He dropped his policy.
In other words, Obamacare's "affordable care" is affordable, as long as one doesn't actually have to use it!
Here is the damage when one does:
- In Miami, the median deductible, according to HealthCare.gov, is $5,000.
- In Jackson, Miss., the comparable figure is $5,500.
- In Chicago, the median deductible is $3,400.
- In Phoenix, it is $4,000;
- In Houston and Des Moines, $3,000.
Considering far more than half the US population has less than $1,000 in savings, there are quite literally tens of millions of people who are one ER visit away from the poor house. And they are unhappy. But at least the liberal think tanks have words of advice:
To those worried about high out-of-pocket costs, Dave Chandra, a policy analyst at the liberal-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, has some advice: “Everyone should come back to the marketplace and shop. You may get a better deal.”
But you almost certainly won't, because the whole structuring of Obamacare was to lower future costs at the expense of a surge in deductible payments, aka the oldest trick in the insurance book. And America fell for it.
So here is what happens when one does find out what is in the "affordable" care law, after it was passed.
Meet Mr. Fanning, from North Texas, who said he and his wife had a policy with a monthly premium of about $500 and an annual deductible of about $10,000 after taking account of financial assistance. Their income is about $32,000 a year.
The Fannings dropped the policy in July after he had a one-night hospital stay and she had tests for kidney problems, and the bills started to roll in.
And just like that a family of two spent half their annual income on insurance and deductibles courtesy of the "Affordable" care act.
It gets better:
Another consumer, Anne Cornwell of Chattanooga, Tenn., said she was excited when Congress passed the Affordable Care Act because she had been uninsured for several years. She is glad that she and her husband now have insurance, because he has had tonsil cancer, heart problems and kidney stones this year.
But with a $10,000 deductible, it has still not been easy.
Her conclusion: "When they said affordable, I thought they really meant affordable," she said.
Nothing more to add.

Get used to it, even employer-based plans have been going to higher out of pocket costs for the last 10 years. Basically, if you have any major health issues get ready to dump at least $5k of your own money into the problem.
Unless you are covered by State, Federal, local .gov
teachers, cops, firemen, prisoners, uaw workers then we have you covered
Boo yah when Is the next paid Holiday Thanksgiving? goody cannot wait!
fU bernanke!
hey rather than raise interest rates to giv some value to our fiat let's mail a check to anyone who has none. better yet use this EBT Card instead
I think most of you kinda like me, but you are gonna hate me now :-).....I use obamacare, but I planned for it many years ago. I set myself up off grid, deal in cash only for the most part, so I can get food stamps and free healthcare...I am so sorry you guys, but I used the system..my health care is great except that doctors are brainwashed in the system of pharma drugs, but I just dont take them. I learned alot about my health tho and used that info to use natural healing things for my ailments...all my cavities are fixed etc. obamacare is good for those who have no money, but have common sense and dont take the doctors word as gospel. I do know that obamacare is the last nail in the coffin, and that socialism and food stamps will ruin a country, but I have probably 50k in social security I will never see so fuck them, I will get what I can..I know its not the best attitude, but give me a break..
Most people here would do the same of they had the option to. Nothing wrong with that.
There's still a chunk of middle class with old fashion pride burning cash to pay for food and medical.
you're really no different than the rest of us
(waiting for "we/us" police in 3...2...1)
we are all sucking the teat dry - all getting "what's ours" LOL
sokay - atonement is inevitable -
will it be Mercy or Severity? - that is that only question that matters in the end.
I haven't seen a doctor since 2009. Have paid the penalties for the last two tax seasons and am now holding a Medicare card. Not a perfect solution but if needed, I'll use it. I am a tad slower than I was when I was thirty five but pretty much strong as a bull, eat right, take a volume of supplements and exercise daily. I'm still about 10 pounds overweight with no high blood pressure or sugar problems and still have a few beers a day. It's not the cost that swayed me, not too much, but the outright leagaleaze arrogance. How can an elected politic do this to please a President? And look for votes?
I've been living my life pretty much this way for the entire time. I never made squat for income. But I'm healthey and thinking and still very much alive. There are people out there with no fathomable concept of what you have to do to stay strong in life. ACA isn't for them either I see.
So now we have a joke, purpotrated upon the American people, with not too many left laughing. And I might live another thirty years to see the punchline.
"Oh joy, Oh Rapture!"
I told the wife that if she see's me laying prostrate and unresponsive in the driveway, wait 30 minutes to call EMS. Cause I don't want to give those fuckers a single clad dime!
The Old Man
Well, this may be the place to say "I buy RX on line without a prescription." Zpak has kept my bouts with winter/seasonal flu morphing into bacterial pneumonia but I have run out and my new bank will not issue payments internataionally (Canada!). I think I will buy a OTC filled visa card and stack up. I have a bad case of something and since I ate in public restaurant figure is a community bug. Purchased a few different antibiotics and have an entire medical bag filled with everything but general anesthesia. Strictly for myself and my pets. I have no ins and refuse to be seen in US medical facility after losing faith they actually had my best interests at heart. I have worked in field for 30 years and know what is going on. We are animals in a laboratory.
Obama will be able to fix all this in his 3rd term.

The economy is doing better, there is not student loan bubble, there is no sub-prime auto loan bubble, there is no fanny/freddy mortgage bubble, there is no equities bubble, there is no PM manipulation bubble, there is no US debt bubble, there is no personal debt bubble, there is no government employee bubble, .... and we wonder why suicides are up.
Buy a crappy Chevrolet with QE support to infinity and you can finance 0% for 72 months (6 years) and get $5K discount and 20% cash back on the loan with zero down; what can go wrong?
Go buy 2 or 3 and take the cash back and buy PM's and tell them to repo the vehicles.
2016 I'm trying LibertyShare. It is one of those "medical sharing" programs which is exempt from the ACA penalty and it's basically a good old fashioned "submit your receipts for reimbursement policy". If it works, great. If not, I'd rather be out $2000 than the $6000 an ACA compliant $3650 deductible policy with nothing reimburseable until the deductible is met (and then the company will just deny everything - I went through that last year after an emergency room visit, all tests were denied by the company regardless of the fact that my condition might have been life threatening and nothing could be determined without certain tests).
Here it gets better, this is United but I think all the insurers offer the same thing, additional insurance for the folks with high deductibles...geez..and this is only for employers to offer to employees, rest of us are still screwed with high deductibles.

LOSE weight by not being able to afford food due to paying medical bills - How 'Merikans are becoming less obese....
In Thailand I walk into a hospital, get seen immediately, get my meds, and get out of there for around $30.
Last year I spent 5 days in a hospital in a nice suite for less than $1400
wtf is going on in the U.S?
Fascism and a huge free shit contingent. And politicians that just love both.
If I ever need surgery I plan to go to another country to get it, airfare, hotels and all that will still be cheaper than trying to get it here. I also get a kick out of the so called 'tolerant' liberals who immediately say 'but aren't you worried about how good doctors are there?', like only American doctors are good at practicing medicine.
Can Pelosi now look inside this and tell us what happens when one needs to declare bankruptcy because one can't afford the deductible on the services rendered?
Pelosi is wealthy. She could give a flying fuck about the little people. They are a joke and pawns for her to twiddle and play with.
And, they never fucking die anymore. They get older and older and don't go away.
i personally have known 2 individuals that had over $1mil hosp bills paid 100% by the gov. if you are in a specific group it is a cake walk paid for by the middle class (or QE printing)....
What? You didn't get the memo?
Every family must have a minimum of one wage earner working for state, local, or federal government. Just so you know, government health insurance can't be beat ... at least for now. Low premiums and low deductibles. After all the doctors quit, it probably won't be so good.
funny but both of the people i know are retired federal workers.
Which reminds me of this:
Greenspan 2005: "We can guarantee cash, but we cannot guarantee purchasing power."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqUzQjXNliU
Just wondering...has anyone since sent that video to Pelosi?
And who on this Earth still votes for that?
WTF.
I mentioned this in another thread, but, my bro's income is abut 6K a year now. His premium on a grandfathered policy is $9,600.
He got debt forgiveness, which triggered 1099s, which apply to your gross income for O-care and medicaid, meaning he qualifies for neither. So far the best plan we can come up with for 2016 so far is to not work at all, as he'll be ahead financially by a wide margin, but he's not willing to pull the trigger on that one.
This country keeps slipping deeper into insanity.
It is a lack of morality all the way around from the head to the toe the whole body is sick.
I am personally on disability and 3 years ago the insurance used about 2 months of payments for various treatments (widespread pain); now 80% of the disability goes to healthcare and I have to forgo 2 of 3, much needed treatments for pain relief because the deductibles. Now I delay the one treatment and pray I can withstand the pain with the "pills" to get by each day, but praise God I do.
What was becoming a tolerable life with function (I'm not yet 50) & now it is a day by day; so it goes. I'm sure in 10 years and look back and these will be the "good ole days". One medical crisis away from bankruptcy.
I have a son who cut his finger with a box cutter that required stitches this past year; because the doc's were closed and the Urgent Care's were closed we went to an ER; the total cost out of pocket was more than the birth of both children including the gynecological visits. This is how far from reality we have fallen. Thanks Obama & Pelosi.
I sympathise with your struggle with pain. But I doubt the doctors will cure you.
Personally I have had problems (arthritis) the doctor said would never go away and it was now about treating the cronic pain. I healed myself, regrowing cartilage with a nutrition supplement ($40/month). Complete remission two years onward.
My condition was not the same as yours, but I can tell you I no longer believe doctors without doing my own research into any condition I face.
Either way I wish you well.
a little secret that Mitt Romney decided to broadcast: The Hill Burton Act requires a hospital to take you in via emergency and MUST treat you regardless of insurance or ability to pay
I WANT a very high deductible, so long as my montly premium is ultra low, just like it used to be with my HSA plan BEFORE Obamacare caused my monthly premiums to double. Over the course of the last five years, there have been be four rate hikes, three of which were specifically attributed to Obamacare and only one of which was due to my moving to a higher age bracket.
I would LOVE to go back to what I had before, with just the one increase due to the age bracket. With my HSA, I am essentially self-insured, paying cash out of my HSA account for all my medical expenses, and paying the low montly premium just for catastrophic coverage.
EXACTLY the way I want my medical insurance to be, but I have to wait until Obamacare collapses to hopefully get back to that setup.
Any respectable Physician won't accept Obamacare. That's a fact. "We don't take that". You're unisured they say. Limited provider networks are coercion. We choose a treatment by choosing a Dr that we agree with. If you can't choose the Dr you can't choose the treatment.
I can hardly wait for the other shoe to drop. When almost no-one can afford mainstream medicine people will have to re-discover how much more effective healthy eating and living are than a "Doctor prescribed" life.
Big pharma companies are addicted to easy money, they will die with the middle class.
Government workers, Medicaid and Medicare. Plenty of demand. They have it made.
Everyone else? Screw you.
This nonsense is really getting bad: Presidents and Congress lie, then people die. (Fast or slowly, same result.)
if they had no obama care and were uninsured they would be in debt 100,000 plus.
This article is uninformed and devoid of facts.
Here in Canada if you can't afford it you don't pay.
yeah, while many people in Australia have medical Insurance, the free system wont let you die, and wont cost you anything
It's FREE!
Someone pays. That can only continue to a point.
what a stupid fucking idiot you are, Canada does not have a bottomle$$ black pit for War goods and devices, nor 200 bases to feed around the world. how can U B so GD DUMB?!
At least you don't have an immature twit like Obama as your head of government.
why thats....thats...thats... SOCAILIST MEDICINE! The world will crack apart if we were to try that system
Piss off asshole. ( B.B.) Why should we NEED insurance for routine medical care? Because Uncle Sugar got involved, and fixed it swell.
I am self employed. Used to have a very affordable major medical policy, for the potentially catastrophic event. Anything else, I paid.
Meanwhile, the FSA goes to the EM for every sniffle, and Uncle Sugar picks up the tab, or the hospital gets stiffed.
Now, I just go without, and not by choice. Fuck this fascist government.
It's a right. I'm entitled. Fuck you. Your not entitled to anything other than life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If you don't want or know how to succeed, do us a favor, and die already. So many useless peeps anymore. Now, it's all on the bus to save your ass. Moral equivallancy is gone.
I reccd your post for teh part (Half) you got right. Problem is, the other part you are THE PROBLEM with.
I too, am an entreprenuer and own my own biz. When you rail wrt the FSA, you are showing just how little you understand of the problem. The problem lies in CONgress' collusion iwth the Medical Cabal. The Medical Cabal is Docs + Hospitals + Insurance + Big Pharma. This group is teh ONLY GROUP in the USSA that is EXEMPTED from US Commerce Code Section 15 - the Sherman and Clayton AntiTrust Acts adn the Robinson=Patman Act.
THIS GROUP WROTE ACA Act.
Wise Up as THAT is the ONLY way to stop teh Thefts and Frauds.
If you removed this Exemption from teh Medical Cabal, No ONE would have insurance and could afford to pay out of pocket for every procedure they required because all Costs of Medical adn Pharmacy would drop overnite to about 20% of where they are today. THis is a mathematical certainty.
If frogs had wings they wouldn't bump their ass when they land. Donkey bag.

You guys are lucky to live in Alices's Wonderland. Your Affordable Care Act, Patriot Act, Freedom Act and Department of Defence all mean the opposite of their meaning in the real world. Enjoy!
The solution to any problem is to figure out the cause of the problem.
ACA did nothing o the sort - it was designed to try to solve a symptom of the problem - and the govt 1000% knew it. Pharma/Insurance wrote most of the act.
They are exempt from anti-trust for the most part
They are exempt from collusion for the most part.
They are exempt from price fixing for the most part
They have passed laws which prevent re-importation and resale except for select few companies to fix the prices
ACA was designed to do one thing and one thing only - extend and pretend to continue the looting of the US public. Healthcare increases of 15-20% a year for 20 years is mathmatically unsustainable. But.... it grew to be such a large percent of the GDP that the govt could not let if fail. The solution is more idiots to spread the costs on. The issue is wages are completely stagnant. It is only obvious that at some point the population cannot afford it anymore or will do without. AAAAHH - lets make it a TAX so the IRS can force you to pay for it.
At the time it was passed, anyone with half a brain and 5th grade math skills could tell that most of the population could not afford the deductible. It was designed such that insurance would rarely, if ever, pay anything unless you were really sick or in a really bad accident.
ACA will fail on its own from the weight of its own collapse - the avg income is 50k. If you deduct rent and food and taxes (no one is going to pay for insurance and live on the street or not eat) you maybe have 15k left. Utilities combined probably take 3-4k of that. You are left with 11k. Most people need transportation. Car - deduct about 300 per month for gas, insurance and payment (cheap car) That leave about 600 per month. Hmm - where is the health care premium going to come from?
first the banks rip you off for 25 trillion dollars then the medical industrial complex rips off your healthcare andd americans just bend over and moan in delight.
You had best be careful generalizing all Americans as sheep. It may be a wolf in sheep clothing, hunting you.
And they're allllll voting for Hillary anyhow. You deserve everything you have coming your way. Fucking sheep.
I tried to go to my local doctors recently. The first large office complex was shut down, light out. The second doctor in town refused to take cash for a discount, and since I have a high deductible, I was left no choice but to walk out. "160$ per person plus fees for anything the doctor does"
I need antibiotics for the family, right now, and I do not have the 1000$ cash to pay for the doctors visits and fees. Suggestions welcome.
Penicillin was supposed to save the masses, at pennies on the dollar. What happened? Obamacare = eugenics? is Obamacare part of the Georgia Guidestones?
Not sure where you live but we have a Super 1 Food Store in our town. I had to get a prescription filled there last month & they gave me a sheet of paper with a list of antibiotics that are free with a prescription. I know, hard to believe but its true. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
Oil of Oregano.
Health food store.
Problem solved- best antibiotic generally available.
If you live near a Fleet Farm or equivalent farm supply store you can find most common antibiotics, even vaccines. Veterinary of course....
@PeakBull...

Thanks for the fish link, and for everyone who contributed.
As I ponder here late at night , still sweating in fever, I realize that antibiotics are very important during a crisis. They should be in every preppers toolkit. Lesson learned.
and then Bernie Sanders goes full retard...
Bernie Sanders: ‘I’m not that much of a socialist compared to Eisenhower’Standard Disclaimer: Bernie, does Operation Wetback ring any bells in that vacuum chamber formerly occupied by your brain?
Many people think that since Obamacare has been around for a while it is proof that the law works, but the fact is it will be several more years before its sustainability can be verified. One thing impossible to refute is the cost of healthcare insurance has soared for many Americans since it was enacted into law. Gone is the infamous promise Obama made on how the average family will save $2,500 a year on healthcare coverage, it has been supplanted by frustration about affordability.
What Washington may be underestimating is how many people drop coverage, regardless of the penalty because they simply cannot afford to buy what is being served, or worse for America quit their job and move onto the government roll. The article below titled, "Healthcare Is Still A Broken System" delves into why the system may collapse under the weight of soaring cost.
http://brucewilds.blogspot.com/2015/11/healthcare-is-still-broken-system.html
One solution is to join a faith based co-op like Christian Care Ministries, where the premiums are very low and you can choose your own deductable and the co-op pays 100% after that... no co-pays.
Example: 55 yo male good health $160/mo premiums with the deductable option of $10K/yr. Premiums approx $285/mo with the deductable option of 500/yr.
These are no longer allowed to form under obamacare, but there are 4 pre-existing such co-ops which were grandfathered and allowed.
For those sheep who are following her, I am happy to eat their lunches.
Life is hard. It is even harder if you are progressive stupid.
The Obirdbrain regime and Congressional progressive criminals infesting the FEDGOV need to be arrested immediately. Obirdbraincare violates several laws. The medical industry is actually a lawless mafia crime syndicate.

Would it help if there were IQ tests required before voting? Maybe some sort of a puzzle for example on the voting machines?
Mom jeans wealth redistribution in action.
When I looked 2 years ago, the CHEAPEST, LOWEST COST version I could find had a 13,000 dollar annual premium with an 11,500 deductible.
Thanks Dear Leader!
Obama, an amazing liar.
Pathological is more like it....
next time they should use that money as fuel for the fireplace, at least they'd get some value out of it.
We have a Lawyer problem...ObamaCare written by Lawyers for Lawyers...All about lawsuits...Litigation = Big Money for the connected law firms...Roughly 40% of all the Politicians are Lawyers think about that.....
Dude! Catch up with current events!
Legislated for financial slavery for the poorest by a black dude.
You couldn't have written a more bizzare tale and the infamy will live on until it is repealed.
The crime ...
If you cannot afford it then there should be no legislation forcing you to pay even if it means you go without.
It really is that simple.
The progs couldn't get gun control thru so they figured if they can't send us to concentration camps easily they could just kill us slowly. That is why we have 0bamacare.
don't forget the Vets Admin "health care" system.
So. What's the problem. Sell a kidney to pay the deductibles, or get the wife/daughter knocked up and sell the foetus to Planned Parenthood. So much for the entrepreneurial spirit in the US.
'… Obama's "crowning achievement" …' Thanks for that. I have an Image of Obama wearing a crown of faeces.
Time for a reset. We need to wipe it all out and start again without our National Socialist Muslim brothers.
For all of you ranting against Obama and the Democrats for passing this bill, try using your brains instead of your...um...other bodily parts to assess ObamaCare.
This bill was written by the pharmaceutical, medical, and insurance industries. It was channeled through right-wing representatives and senators (whatever their nominal party denomination). It was designed to screw the American people and transfer even more money to corporations. Basically, it's a Republican Dream.
I don't see many insurance executives protesting ObamaCare. Nor does Big Pharma seem to be labeling it "socialist" or "evil". Even the Republican party has stopped paying lip service to its so-called socialist nature; they see a campaign donor gravy train instead.
So what exactly is everyone complaining about? Do you want less affordable insurance that is entirely privatized and excludes millions of Americans who then get free care from emergency rooms or simply die (don't assume this is a good thing...sickness and death cost our economy billions)? Do you want no health insurance, the ultimate libertarian dream? Or perhaps a much cheaper solution?
how about fully socialized medical care with private insurance for those who want luxury treatment? That is the British and French way. They spend MUCH LESS on medical care overall including public health payments. And they have much better results.
But go ahead, keep demonstrating your startling inhumanity and ignorance. Obamacare is not what you claim; it's worse.
Obama is a dream to the power brokers in washington. MIC, AIPAC, Extraction Industries, Wall Street have all gotten everything they want.
Medical is now 'extracting" rents from labor, along with the other main players (just mentioned).
Obama is doing what Republicans would do, only faster - because he is a democrat.
Politics is theater.
Your post indicates a very conflicted person.
This applies to mental health too.
People who are nuts are not seeing their shrinks.
This should increase violence too.
It is jackasses like you that keep the Mental Health Sciences in the dark ages. I hope you and your family never have to deal with a schizophrenic loved one.
It's True my sister living in Georgia just went in for knee surgery. $4,000 up front deductible with a $500 a month premium. She is trying to roll in other health repairs this year since she paid the $4,000.
Her insurance REALLY costs her $10,000 a year if she wants to USE IT. This represents 25% of her take home pay.
America did not 'fall for it.' It was shoved up our collective asses, a giant rectum wrecking suppository of gubbamint greed.
This month I lost my great insurance for a piece of crap (employee plan with work). My premiums are up 55% per month, I pay for myself and my wife. Copays for medicine up anywhere from 100%-250%. Deductible up $1,500, Really "affordable". I wonder what retard still buys this shit.
And this is what happens when you get the worst of both worlds. This isn't single payer, isn't any better than before, and actually isn't any worse. People were already 1 ER visit away from the poorhouse before ACA.
Is there anybody here criticising a single-payer system that's willing to go bankrupt and have their family destroyed while sticking to their "i'll pay my own way" point of view? First two guesses don't count.
Also.. NYT hard-left? LOL.
Who the hell voted for this DICK WAD ANYWAY??
Diebold
over the past 18 months my insurance has risen from $650 to $840 per month and my deductible from $2500/yr to $7500. so for me my to use my insurance, it costs me $7,280 more now than when the POS fuck pushed his socialist crap on us. FU Obama.
