U.S. Government Moves To Exploit Paris Terror Attacks To Ban Privacy

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

Last week, the British Prime Minister told Parliament that he wants to “ensure that terrorists do not have a safe space in which to communicate.”

Strong encryption refers to the act of scrambling data in such a way that it cannot be understood by anyone without the correct key or password — even law enforcement with a warrant, or the software manufacturer itself. It’s used in some of the most popular tech products in the world, including the iPhone, WhatsApp messenger, and Facebook.

A highly respected cryptographer and security expert is warning that David Cameron’s proposed ban on strong encryption threatens to “destroy the internet.”

– From the post: Top Computer Security Expert Warns – David Cameron’s Plan to Ban Encryption Would “Destroy the Internet”

You didn’t think the surveillance state would give up that easily did you? Of course not.

Unsurprisingly, fresh off the heels of the Paris terror attacks, the usual authoritarian suspects in the U.S. government are running around exploiting the tragedy in a bid to further erode privacy and civil liberties.

Bloomberg reports:

The bloodshed in Paris led U.S. officials Monday to renew calls for limits on technology that prevents governments from spying on phone conversations, text messages and e-mails.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, said she asked Silicon Valley companies to help law enforcement and intelligence agencies access communications that have been encrypted — or scrambled to evade surveillance — if terrorists are using the tools to plan attacks.

“I have asked for help. And I haven’t gotten any help,” Feinstein said Monday in an interview with MSNBC. “If you create a product that allows evil monsters to communicate in this way, to behead children, to strike innocents, whether it’s at a game in a stadium, in a small restaurant in Paris, take down an airliner, that’s a big problem.”

This woman has absolutely no shame whatsoever.

Brennan said he hopes the Paris attacks will serve as “a wake-up call” for European governments who have been critical of spy programs.

Yes, wake up and give up your freedoms before the terrorists have a chance to take them. That’ll show ’em.

Investigators in France are still piecing together how three coordinated teams of gunmen and suicide bombers managed to create carnage in one of Europe’s most heavily policed cities. So far, five of the seven assailants who died have been identified — four of them French citizens, and one believed to be a Syrian who entered Europe as an asylum-seeker.

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch has said that terrorists are using encryption to communicate — on everything from apps to gaming systems. Last week, Belgium’s deputy prime minister said that “the most difficult communication between these terrorists is via PlayStation 4.”

Players using Sony’s popular gaming system can communicate via direct messages or by voice. A Buzzfeed story said that players, who can be located anywhere in the world, have found even more elaborate ways to communicate, including using “weapons during a game to send a spray of bullets onto a wall, spelling out whole sentences to each other.”

So people are spraying messages to each other in video games, and we’re supposed to believe the threat can be countered by getting access to everyone’s What’s App messages.

New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton on Monday called on technology companies to help investigators, although he didn’t specify exactly how. Technology has been “purposefully designed by our manufactures so that even they claim they cannot get into their own devices after they’ve built them,” Bratton said on MSNBC.

“They need to work with us right now,” Bratton said. “In many respects, they’re working against us.”

So the guy clearly has no idea what he’s talking about, but he’s talking about it anyway.

Senator John McCain, an Arizona Republican and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said on MSNBC Monday that “it’s time we had another key that would be kept safe and only revealed by means of a court order.”

Privacy advocates pushed back against the arguments, saying restrictions wouldn’t make Americans safer.

“Any attempt to mandate back doors or prohibit the technology altogether would basically amount to trying to outlaw math, and any attempt to do so will fail to make us safer against terrorism, while making us all much less safe online and also threatening our digital economy,” said Kevin Bankston, director of the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Institute, in an e-mail.

“In the end, we can hurt ourselves much more than the terrorists can hurt us,” Bankston said. “Indeed, that’s their entire strategy — to make us injure ourselves, our political values, our economies, our security — in our attempt to injure them.”

Indeed, and we seem intent on continuing to hurt ourselves as much as we possibly can.

They will only decrypt terrorist communications.

But, they can only find that out after they decrypt the communications.
So, they have to decrypt it to find out what's in it.

Where have I heard that before?

Isn't it funny how NSA / Five Eyes & Authorities never know who & where these attacks may occur? However, They quickly know after the fact exactly who they are & where they are?

It's obvious it's a staged event, like so many others. Have you not come to realize that when they perpetrate something upon the people, they have all the answers almost immediately, but when the people find out about their evil plans & expose them, there are investigations that take years to find out who the perpetrator is & even beyond that, nothing ever happens to the perpetrator?

If they knew in advance, as we are told it's necessary to surveil absolutely everything everyone does in whatever nation to avoid such acts, how do these acts continually occur?

Will there be Class 3 Playstations for serious gamers?...is it possible to segregate peoples habits a little moar?...lmao!!!

That doesn't prove it is staged, face recognition software is the shit. All the various agencies with files on potential offenders do is simply feed coverage of ongoing events into their software and boom, they know. It's basically a marriage between face recognition and massive databases on people.

Please, never blame Obama for anything.  It is pointing the blame in entirely the wrong direction.  Obama is puppet, the worst president ever because the system is ever-more broken. How would the most honest man in the world do?  Never happen.

Focus on the source of the problems, the many policies of the government that the President may or may not agree with, doesn't matter, the fact that we have governments with policies is the failure.

They control very much of what you think.  I have to work like hell to keep my mind independent of all the propaganda, of course fail at times.  In doing that, I see the patterns everywhere.  The one going on just now leading up to the rate hike is beautiful to watch.  We just learned that the economy is doing well, that extremely low rate of labor force participation is just normal trends, might get worrisome in the future, but entirely explicable.  Right.

US officials seize on Paris attacks to press for “back door” to encryption

By Joseph Kishore
18 November 2015

US officials are moving rapidly to exploit the terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday to push forward with already existing plans to undermine encrypted communications and vastly expand the powers of the state.

The Obama administration, which created the conditions for the tragedy in Paris with its war policy that has laid waste to much of the Middle East, is now using it to further its criminal operations. The campaign is being led by John Brennan, Obama’s CIA director, who has been personally implicated in both the NSA’s illegal and unconstitutional spy programs and the CIA’s torture program.

In remarks delivered Monday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., Brennan blamed insufficient spying capacities for the terrorist attacks. “A lot of technological capabilities that are available right now… make it exceptionally difficult, both technically as well as legally, for intelligence and security services to have the insight they need,” he claimed.

As with responses to other attacks, there is no effort to reconcile claims that insufficient “intelligence” allowed the attacks in Paris to happen with the fact that the individuals who carried out the shootings were known to intelligence agencies, with several being actively monitored. One of the alleged attackers, Omar Ismaïl Mostefai, had been flagged by French police for suspected “radicalization” but had been allowed to travel to and from Syria unhindered. Warnings from Turkish officials were ignored.

If they do this, your smartphone becomes a conduit to everything in your collection: laptop, tablet, desktop.  If they do this, the SIM on my phone moves back to my old flip phone.  It has AOL instant messenger, (which I never used even once, because internet service was extra cost in the plan at the time), and isn't smart enough to have a virus.  Let them monitor that, the freaks.  What the government doesn't seem to get, is they are making every person feel like a criminal.  Doing that, they lose the trust of the population.  Next time I see a crime committed, I just drive past and leave my phone in my pocket.  You want to make me part of your problem, or part of the solution?  Elitists: They don't care about all the good you ever did in your life.  To them, it adds up to nothing, because they don't have morals or ethics themselves.  So fuck 'em.  Now I'll just be a 'neutral' citizen, head turned.

Petition Title: Place a Moratorium on all Refugee Resettlement from the Middle East in the Wake of the Paris Terror Attacks.
In the wake of the Jihad terror attacks in Paris of 13 November, we demand that an indefinite moratorium be placed on all refugee resettlement from Middle Eastern nations.
It has recently come to light that one of the Paris Jihad attackers possessed a Syrian passport and passed through Greece in October 2015. According to Nikos Toscas, Greecexs deputy minister in charge of police, xThe holder of the passport passed through the island of Leros on Oct. 3, 2015, where he was identified according to EU rules.x
Seeing how this attacker easily exploited Europe's refugee policies, we can only assume that others will exploit our generous, and porous, system in order to commit acts of terrorism on our sacred American soil.
Mr. President, WE demand an indefinite moratorium. Protect America!

IMO they already have "keys". Them saying otherwise only re-enforces my assertion. The best way to get information is for the mark to feel safe sending his messages.

Considering the huge amount of spying that has ramped up in the last fifteen (15) years has not resulted in the stopping of one (1) terrorist operation should tell a thinking person something. Yes?

And take a moment to consider all these people that work for these spooks and various law enforcement take an oath to support and defend the constitution which explicitly makes their daily routines unlawful and traitorous no matter how many laws they pass that are not in pursuance thereof... (Article VI) .

It should be obvious the government rules by the gun these days,,, which is why they prefer you not to have one. Some day soon they will attempt to correct this error and at that moment you will be able to tell the patriots that talk the talk from those that walk the walk.

The intelligence community is the segment of our world that is most endangered by all this high-tech crap. Problem is, they have become LAZY.

Instead of putting the hard work into data collection/interpretation, studying the enemy, learning his ways, customs, languages, making the contacts, infiltrating, etc...they now sit, slack-jawed in front of glowing screens. "The machines" do all the 'work' with keyboard strokes, or so they believe.

We are far LESS safe these days, with our intelligence community so enthralled with their new toys that they are neglecting the old-school methods needed to actually USE all the data they are collecting.

Newer agents aren't being properly trained either, it's all tech, tech, tech...To defeat an enemy you have to understand him, know something about what makes him tick. Collecting his emails and phone messages isn't going to give you any useful info in the absence of that. Data must be INTERPRETED after collection, or you are just a hoarder of useless information. And you can't interpret that which you can't understand.

So, the NSA-style data-collection makes us LESS safe, and makes agencies like the NSA LAZY and INEFFECTUAL. These people need to be told to put the shiny gadgets DOWN and get back to actual WORK. Learn those languages and customs, grow those bushy beards, make those connections that bear fruit after many years...lazy fucks...go out and DO THE WORK you are supposed to, keep us safe for REAL instead of wasting time and resources rifling through the 'underwear drawers' of peoples private communications from in front of your monitors.

Oh that's right "QE infinity" and threats to the people you outsourced all of that labor too when they don't do what you want them to do, when you want them to do it with your superior "Naval power" that you can't afford anymore because you don't control the entire "energy card" with that "universal currency" that MUST be used to pay for it...And when that doesn't work?... oh let's see... And last but not least using acts of wanton terrorism to kill thousands if not hundreds of thousands using your proxies aka. Blackwater/Academi/Xi to train ISIS/ISIL/Al Nursra/Al Qaeda!

Dear TPTB,

A. If having a gun-free zone in France/Europe didn't help the victims of these terrorist acts

B. If Turkish intelligence warned French intelligence (they thus HAD the necessary intel), but they did not act, then...

Why would having more Draconian measures against The People be at all effective against future attacks?  The answer, of course, is that they wouldn't.  The terrorists would only do more of what they are already doing:  Use low-tech and no-tech methods of communicating, which is what people have been doing for >10,000 years.

But let's not confuse the Pretext (more NWO totalitarianism) with the Pretext ('Security'), shall we?

You may not be fooling anyone here on ZH, but what do you care, if you manage to fool and intimidate the 95% into compliance, or limit ZH activists to mere venting in its blog site? For you know, and I know, that the smarter a person is, the less likely they are to risk their economic, social and physical comforts for something like a public protest or organizing something more (Civil Disobedience, for starters, or an actual Revolution).  As long as the 95% have their dose of 'Soma', nothing will happen.

What's insane is not even 24 hours after Paris happened, every major media outlet was running an anti-encryption story, most of them so bogus that anyone with a smattering of knowledge about the subject saw through it. Shit, the NYT actually ended up pulling their story, it was so bad.

Not that everyone on ZH doesn't already know it, but the MSM is beyond corrupt at this point and is merely a mouthpeice of the deep state and nothing else.

The tech companies got fucked by the NSA and aren't playing ball, and TPTB are so pissed about it they're trying to force their ways on others rather than the usual "unseen hand" guiding things, knowing full well that what they're trying to get would have done nothing to prevent any attacks anywhere. This is just using the attacks for every possible goal TPTB wants to achieve after creating the opportunity to make the changes. Fuck these assholes.

Politicians and the internet, the two just don't mix.  Politicians just are not able to understand a non-centralised framework.  Does anyone remember the hot air and blustering about crakcing down on filesharing around the end of the 90s into the 2000s?  Yeah, worked out well, didn't it?

If you kill encryption you kill:

Online banking

Online shoping

Remote access to servers

Secure traffic between anything and anything else, like, say, Goldman moving its many digital zeros around.

You kill consumer spending, money velocity AND the internet in one stroke.  Genius!

Aaaaaaaand, all of those dirty little secrets passing in emails between these megalomaniacal fuckstain politicians about hookers, blow and backhanders will be available for all to see.  I'm sure they wont like that. Nooooooo....

It would be a cyber-crime free for all, just sniff the network and eveything arrives on your drive in plaintext.  Fucking outstanding.  What brilliant, brilliant minds these people have.

If you ever needed convincing that politicians are ignorant, out of touch simpletons, I would struggle to offer a better example than this.

'we just want to have access to encryption'.  There are enough exploits being discovered every single day that compromise systems.  That's bad enough - if you build in deliberate backdoors, you might as well not bother with encryption at all.

I'd laugh, but these are the same people that are in control of the nukes.
