Over Half Of New Yorkers Struggle To Make Ends Meet As "Tale Of Two Cities" Deepens
Despite two years of liberal redistribution from Mayor de Blasio, the majority of New Yorkers continue to struggle to make ends meet mirroring his 2013 "tale of two cities" campaign theme. The NYTimes poll finds that only 20% are living comfortably while 51% are just getting by or finding it difficult to manage, and shows even greater disparities in quality of life across the city’s five boroughs.
As The New York Times reports, an atmosphere of economic anxiety pervades all areas of the city...
Residents of the Bronx and Brooklyn shared the most pronounced sense of economic insecurity, and the lowest confidence in local government and the police — a distinctly different experience from the rest of the city.
In those boroughs, nearly three in five residents said they were straining to make ends meet. In the Bronx, 36 percent said there had been times in the past year when they did not have the money to buy enough food for their family; only one in five said they and their neighbors had good or excellent access to suitable jobs.
But if the city appears divided into broad camps of haves and have-nots, it was, perhaps surprisingly, the less privileged segments of New York that shared the most positive outlook on the future.
Four in 10 Brooklyn residents said their neighborhood was getting better, and 36 percent of Bronx residents said the same. Manhattanites and Staten Islanders were most likely to say things were getting worse in their area.
Government is not seen as addressing the problems that trouble these areas: In the Bronx, only one in five respondents gave local government high marks for meeting their needs. In Brooklyn, that figure was a bit higher, at 26 percent, compared with roughly a third in Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.
“I feel like people who were born in this neighborhood stay here our whole lives,” Ms. Thomas said. “If it was true that we had opportunities for advancement, then all of us wouldn’t still be here 20 years from now.”
Which reminds us of Margarent Thatcher's infamous line...

word to ur mother!
rat infested hell hole....enjoy ur space undeneath the stairwell.
nyc is the filter. It's one of the few places left where you can arrive with nothing and make a shitload of money, but it's fucking brutal.
Your friends back in the suburbs are buying houses, gaining equity, getting married and having kids, while you're living in a shithole "loft" with roommates in some brooklyn warehouse despite making twice what they do back home. It takes dedication, at the least.

London is just the same. ANywhere the 1% calls home, in fact. It isn't going to change until the 1% run out of people to do their menial tasks for them because such folks can't afford to live there any longer.
"The problem with conservatism is that you eventually run out of Thatchers."
Attributed to Mark Twain.
I bet you have two Obama bobbleheads shoved up your ass right now, don't ya?
With free Obama batteries...
Maybe if you let yourself get physically butt raped by a banker you can afford to live in the city..

The're all free shit train riders anyway
....and...you run out of other peoples money-Republicans are just FINE with socailism as long as it is redistributed back up to them
The problem with Ultra-capitalism is that you evetually run out of poor people to steal from. Then you have to steal from the middle classes. Then you have to steal from the millionaires. Then its just a few hundred billionaires slugging it out for domination (where we are at in 2015). In the end, you will have two guys, both Trillionaires, fighting to be king. At the very end of capitalism (and make no mistake, capitalism will eat itself) we will have one Trillionaire as king of the world. Then, maybe then, the people will rise up and kill him and we will start the process anew. Such is the way, such as it ever was.
First they came for the Poor people, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not poor.
Then they came for the Middle Class, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not in the Middle Class.
Then they came for the Millionaires, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Millionaire
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
Most New Yorkers eat their way to and from work so it's a wonder they have anything left to wipe their ass after they take a healthy shit in the middle of the street in front of a bus load of tourist and a city cop. Thanks Bill
The landlords are all living comfortably.
Sauron lives on Wall Street, Saruman and Isengard are in Washington D.C.
It will be a very different NYC once interest rates rise, loan volume dries up, long-term bonds collapse, and those shitstains that currently occupy the towers on Wall Street are put in their proper place.
Hopefully NYC has a plan to move beyond being host to the parasitic financial sector in its future.
NYC is a good whore. When 1 john cant pay anymore, it's on to the next. Would be good to see meat being sold again down in the meatpacking district.
What's going on there right now? Fudgepacking?
Yeah, in 7000 dollar a month one bedroom apts.
Watch when shit hits the fan - those upper east side guys real estate won't be to desirable living so close to harlem....
Ask anyone from UPSTATE, NY how tough it's been! Oh wait, nevermind, looks like they've all left and are living in North Carolina now. Never mind!
Most of Connecticut has moved out to Ohio.
Good luck suckers.
There's an upstate ny?
Just for the uninformed, Upstate NY consists, generally, of anything North and West of Poughkeepski or Newburgh, and that includes Albany, wihich is actually at the foothills of the Adirondack mountains.
If one was to draw a line north to south, though Albany, the part of the state to the West could all be considered Upstate.
I live in Western NY, along Lake Ontario, about 30 miles east of Rochester. It's fucking heaven.
OK, maybe not heaven, exactly, because the taxes are absurd, but, I bought 5.7 acres with 2+ acres of arable land, about the same amount of woods and a nicely-flowing stream for $14k, and eveyrbody in the neighborhood said I overpaid. I didn't care. Fair value may heve been around $11-12k, but I wanted the property because it's in the middle of apple orchards and the neighbors are all WHITE and cool.
My taxes are about $700 a year, most of which is for the fucking school district, which is a piece of shit, as are most school districts.
You can grow just about anything in NY, and, if you're either well-connected or fairly resourceful, you can avoid the pitfalls of regulations and taxation. Greasing the palm of the local code enforecment officer is not outside the realm of possibilites. Actually, my CEO is a pretty easy=-going guy who has seen it all, so he hasn't given me any grief.
So, in a nutshell, good land can be had for about $2k per acre, even less if you're buying scrub land, wetland (which can be farmed, BTW) or more than 15 acres.
Lots of farmers, kids with their heads screwed on properly, pretty depressed villages (many of which are ecoming unincorporated and merging back into their respective towns, lowering the tax rates), and, while the winters can be brutal, the other seasons are awesome.
The Carolinas are OK, but I was turned off by the price of land in SC, about $5k an acre for land that's primarily red clay. I decided to stay put and don't regret it.
"liberal redistribution"
I would like to hear this long list of redistribution policies that de Blasio put in place. Please share.
The truth is that it's all about the fed, low interest rates, and the cost of housing.
Liberal redistribution? What are you fucking high? Nothing was redistributed down the income ladder. Nothing.
Zero Hedge appears to be attempting to link the excesses of Wall Street to Bill de Blasio's policies. At best, this is wholly inaccurate. At worst, it qualifies as the intentional deception of voters.
Good to see you again Erik.
Our favorite nail.
Nobody makes money in NYC unless the mayor turns a blind eye. He is like e ery other socialist king, promising riches the the masses whilst dining with the classes. All he has to do to keep the masses happy is not to actually improve their lot, just simply publicly fuck over a few rich folk from time to time. The really fat cats don't mind throwing him some red meat from time to time to keep the wolves from the door.
all money is designed to trickle UP to Conservatives and Republicans....the Elite....NOTHING "Liberal" about that
You mean conservatives like Hitler zuckerberg and gates?
Come ON Tylers enough of this crap.
Maybe instead you would rather see some crib photos of NYC rich and famous crowd?
Zero stars for this garbage article.
From the NY Times story:
Staten Island which is the most conservative borough was the most optimistic.
From the story below.
Only in Staten Island, where residents had a strongly favorable view of their borough as a place to raise children, and expressed clear confidence that their children would graduate from high school, did participants in the poll share a distinctively negative outlook on the future.
The reason for that pessimism may be crime: Heroin abuse there has risen sharply, and, along with high reported rates of vandalism and theft, about four in 10 Staten Islanders expect children in their neighborhoods to fall victims to drug or alcohol abuse
Heroin abuse has risen sharply?? I am sure it has nothing to do with the exploding supply of Afghanistan heroin courtesy of the See Eye Aye aka ISIS aka Al Qeada aka False Flags Are Us.
If Trump loses, New York will be over.
Couldn't happen to a more deserved liberal shit hole, second only to that west coast shit hole California.
AMEN and 1000 up votes to you.
Despite two years of liberal redistribution from Mayor de Blasio
Don't you mean "Because of"?
Thatcher... bitch. Just look on her nose and on her lips - it is clear, that she has jewish origin!
Too busy paying all the taxes fees and tolls to theirs masters...
and now we are running out of future generation money.
Great place for Syrian "refugees" to settle down. New Slum City.
strange...she was more than delighted to spend 'other peoples money' when it came to defense, bribes, corruption
You can put lipstick on a cesspool, but it's still a cesspool.
But how was it a year ago, five years ago, ten years ago.....
