What Money Means

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Adam Taggart via PeakProsperity.com,

There's no doubt that money is important. There's good reason why most of us devote a huge percentage of our lives to pursuing it.

But there's much about money that is misunderstood.

Many among the masses don't realize the intense and coordinated efforts currently being waged by central planners to trap and devalue our savings through financial repression. They're being fleeced without being aware of it -- working harder and harder for less and less.

Many others overvalue the impact money has on our happiness. They make all sorts of sacrifices in pursuit of money, but remain poor in the things that truly matter.

In our new book Prosper!: How to Prepare for the Future and Create a World Worth Inheriting, we examine closely what true wealth is. Yes, money absolutely plays a critical part in it; but it is only one of several pillars -- one of 8 Forms of Capital -- that we identify as required for a rich life. Good health, purposeful work, meaningful relationships, a resilient lifestyle, self-worth, a supportive community -- all of these ingredients are as important as money for overall happiness.

We wrote Prosper! as a resource that those already "awake" to these insights can use to share with family and friends who aren't yet aware of them.

And since money is a universal attention-grabber as a topic, we're making our chapter on Financial Capital available here for free -- as a means of engaging someone you care about in the discussion. We think it's one of the best digests of what happening right now with our money system:

Gold is just a traditional store of value, not money. Fuck you, Bernanke.

The 8 Forms of Capital are 8 one ounce gold coins, stacked one on top of the other.  The more stacks of gold coins you have, the better you feel.

Confusing money with currency?  This book you're pimping sounds like it's going to be stuffed with valuable insight then.

"But there's much about money that is misunderstood."

Quite.

There are three functions of money, gold is only really good for one of them, pretty poor at the other two.  It's worth having for the one though.

"Gold is money everything else is fraud."

Bullcrap. Gold is a commodity. It's an "Ooooo! SHINEY!!!" The only reason it is valued is because it is somewhat scarce, and shiny.

ANYTHING can be "money" - or USED as money. All "money" is is a medium of exchange. On a Pacific island, a certain color and shape of shell has value because... it's rare. Seashells? Rarity confers value because it's different than the usual run of shells, someone wants it, and they want it more than you do so you can extract a premium (a couple of fish?) from them for the shell. Then others decide that such shells have value because someone is willing to give you fish for that kind of shell. Then the next thing you know JP Morgan and Jamie Dimon are trying to grab all the pretty shells.

Personally - if I found a shell that you wanted, I'd give it to you. In so doing, I'd avoid all the evil of monetary systems and I'd make a friend in the process. Friends are MUCH more valuable than money.

I have one example of a US Silver Certiicate, a US Note, and a FRN. I show it to people when they say that the dollar has always had value.

I get a lot of stares and blank looks.

These are the pungent comments I found after reading the article.  Whenever the concensus is so lopsided, and those iterating the buy signal lack nothing but a single cogent argument, it's time to sell.

Gold will be under a $1000 within two weeks.  Predictions are easy to make, and difficult to find later.  So maybe the naysayers who follow ought to bookmark this one for December 3rd, two weeks from today.  Gold is currentyly $1080.80

The value of paper gold in fiat is as irrelevent as your buy/sell 'signals'.  My pungency will continue until further notice, feel free to stand upwind.

You may very well be correct about 2 weeks from now Au is less than $1000/oz, and really it means diddly in the scheme of things this year.

But the real question is what is the price of gold in 1 year? 2 years? 5 years?

Now there are predictions worth something for accuracy.

I'm holding for a sell in the reasonable future - it will exceed $2500/oz in less than 10 years.

Many people here dont give a shit about the value of physical in terms of make believe fiat, but would rather own physical when fiat inevitably becomes worthless.

57-71,

if the dollar goes away, how will folks describe their gold holdings except by weight?

I have an ounce of gold worth what per ounce?  Yuan?  Euros? Rubles?  Peseta?

Unfortunately, it may be measured in bullets/ounce.
