Christmas, along with almost all the Christmas iconography has nothing at all to do with Christianity. It is a pagan festival.
After an appropriate time Christianity redeployed the pagan (or rather Roman) imagery to suit their own religious practices. While early Christian churches were plain on the outside they used the same architectural elements on the inside that the temples used on their exterior.
There's a whole area of study surrounding the death of paganism and pagan symbols and the birth of Christianity and the redeployment of those same symbols.
