Chipotle Plunges To 17-Month Lows After CDC Report Exposes 3 New States With E.Coli Infections

Tyler Durden's picture

After a strong bounce this week, Chipotle is tumbling back to June 2014 lows after The CDC issues a report that states:

  • *CDC: 45 PEOPLE INFECTED WITH OUTBREAK STRAIN IN 6 STATES
  • *CDC:EVIDENCE SUGGESTS COMMON MEAL ITEM/INGREDIENT LIKELY SOURCE

CDC says 3 additional states have reported people infected with the
strain of E.Coli linked to Chipotle restaurants since last update.

Reported illnesses: California (2), Minnesota (2), New York (1), Ohio (1), Oregon (13), Washington (26)

CDC
says epidemiologic evidence at this time suggest source of outbreak is
common meal item or ingredient served at CMG restaurants in several
states

Know why Mexicans re-fry beans?  Because they can't get it right the first time.

Oh, please, do tell, what food item is it causing the outbreak?  Please! Please!
Like maybe Heinz Tomato Catsup?
Come on, what is it?
Tell me.  I promise I won't say anything.

That's probably a good guess.  Out here in ----- ----- , ------, -- , CA, there was a health item a while ago and it was from cilantro that had been harvested form a field in Mecxio* wherein the workers had freely defecated.

*  Buddy of mine probably 30 years ago took a va-ca to Mexico and bought a beautiful hand tooled leather golf bag (weighed a ton but was stunning gorgeous work of art) and Mexico was misspelled MECXIO in big assed letters up one side of the bag.

Chipotle was GREAT years ago when they used high quality ingredients and the employees at least pretended to give a shit, but they've noticeably gone downhill (I used to eat there a few times a week, but haven't been there in nearly a year.)

Between the comment the CEO made about customers 'not caring' where the ingredients came from and getting the shits after every time I ate their chicken, I figured it was time to move on.

Fri, 11/20/2015 - 16:21 | 6819059 herkomilchen
herkomilchen's picture

Agreed the quality of the employees has just gone off a cliff.  I suppose labor costs have gotten so crazy due to government, they have to cut somewhere to keep a lid on prices, which they have done.

They were so high on food quality out of the gate that even the recent slips are forgivable.  Where they need help is portion consistency.  All over the freaking board.

Back around 2004 when Chipotle was new in Atlanta, I quickly learned that the burritos my young, smoking hot, slender blonde girlfriend with natural 30G (at their biggest) breasts would come home with burritos that were almost twice as big as the one's I would be served. So... I used to send her up there by herself a lot. lol

THE SYSTEM OF LOSERS

Well, of course, there's been another outbreak, because when the gov't "experts" couldn't find the source the first go-around, the probability was they were just too incompetent to be able to ascertain it!

I mean, look at all the losers in the gov't like George Tenet, useless at the CIA, then starts his own security biz, and gets those sweetheart contracts, once again a LOSER is rewarded for the complete incompetence.

It's like the CIA, NSA and DIA are too incompetent to figure out the money trails to and from ISIS, or DAESH, or ISIL of assil, yet everyone else can! (Hint:  Bilal Erdogan and BMZ Group)

And we see Mikey Morrell, that super-incompetent pansy who was deputy director at the CIA saying to an interviewer when questioned on his culpability, "It's not my job!"

Then we see former DIA director, Michael Flynn, during an interview with al Jazeera, when questioned about his culpability say, "It's not my job!"

Who hires these fucktards anyway? (Rhetorical question, please don't answer.)

Read two books on that missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, one intelligent and covering all, or most, of the bases, and the other one by an idiotic FAA inspector who couldn't find his own vagina!

This FAA clown actually included, seriously, that phony baloney scam out of the Ukraine, by that company which the day before was selling "magic rocks" but overnight became a super-tech company using former state-of-the-art remote sensing equipment form the former Soviet Union, and claimed that MH370 was in the Bay of Bengal (took any normal person less than 5 minutes on the Web to debunk).

Sheesh!!!!!!!!!!!!

(I suspect those gov't health inspectors couldn't find their own vaginas, either!)

The idiot author was David Soucie, and his book was "Malaysia Airlines FLight 370" while the intelligent book was

"Someone is Hiding Something" by Richard Belzer (highly recommended)

Fuck Chipotle and their shitass beef. Every time I've ever bought a beef burrito (not pulled pork the brisket type beef) it's inedible. Too much cartilage, hopefully they're not cutting up spinal cords turning to mad cow disease. The only thing that makes them worthwhile is their cheaper pricing.

But the real thing that sealed the deal and turned avoidance into a boycott was when they went publicly anti-gun. (It's their right to express their political beliefs, but it's my right to express mine too by refusing to patronize their establishments.)

If I were to invest in anything now it would be makers of inexpensive essentials like food, medicine, toilet paper.  Sales won't drop for these things even in a downturn.  It's consumer durable goods, entertainment & luxuries, and construction that going to tank.

Fri, 11/20/2015 - 16:36 | 6819109 dchang0

Alcohol does well in a downturn while food-only restaurants do worse. We saw that during the last recession. Interestingly, nail salons do well too--women go there to de-stress more often during economic hardships. So some things one might consider luxuries ($6 for a beer at a bar vs. drinking water from the tap for pennies--the beer is a luxury) actuall do well in a downturn.

I would invest in "cheap comforts" or "escapes from reality" businesses in preparation for the crash, in addition to the necessities/essentials.

Fri, 11/20/2015 - 17:01 | 6819211 herkomilchen
herkomilchen's picture

Alcohol, yes.  Must drown sorrows with small extravagances.  My argument for Chipotle is that in a downturn it will be equivalent of the small extravagance.  They even serve Margaritas!  Brilliant, subtle way to class up their operation and distinguish from fast food.

People still eat out, even in a downturn, they just eat out less and at lower cost places.  They will cut 5 course sit down meals where tabs run >$100.

But other than fully slumming it at McDonald's, there is precious middle ground with cheap yet high quality dining options.  Chipotle is one.  A family of four can eat there for <$50.  A worker can credibly take a colleague there for a business lunch without seeming ghetto.

Chiptole is the downsize option to replace going out for a sit-down meal like the $6 beer at the midrange bar is the downsize option to replace going out for a $12 cocktail at the fancy lounge.  Perfect fit for a recession.

Exactly.  This is fixable and will blow over.

Compared to fast food joints, Chipotle provides great quality food and atmosphere for the money. For all its faults, compare to KFC or White Castle and you'll realize there is not much competition.  Chipotle is the perfect downsizing option for middle class workers and families who will need a respectable dining out option as sit-down restaurants become unaffordable.  Chipotle is a soft landing zone for the nouveau-poor.

Company has no debt, great growth.  If it weren't for the P/E of 30-40, it could be a good stock.  But even after this drop is still overvalued.
