Tesla Tumbles After Recalling 90,000 "Best Car Ever" Model S Sedans

Tyler Durden's picture

From "Best Car Ever" to this... TESLA CONDUCTS VOLUNTARY RECALL OF 90,000 MODEL S SEDANS FOR SEAT BELT INSPECTION.

As Bloomberg reports,

Tesla Motors Inc. said it’s conducting a voluntary recall of 90,000 Model S cars because of a single report of a front seat belt not being properly connected.

“Tesla recently found a Model S in Europe with a front seat belt that was not properly connected to the outboard lap pretensioner,” the company said in an e-mail to customers Friday. “This vehicle was not involved in a crash and there were no injuries. However, in the event of a crash, a seat belt in this condition would not provide full protection. First and foremost, we care about your safety.”

Tesla was alerted to the seat belt issue by a female customer in Europe two weeks ago and moved to inspect 3,000 vehicles and its assembly process. The Palo Alto, California-based company said it has found no other issues, but wants owners to bring their cars in to make sure the seat belts are properly connected. They are being advised to book an appointment for the inspections.

“In early November, a customer sitting in the front passenger seat turned to speak with occupants in the rear and the seat belt became disconnected,” a Tesla representative said. “The seat belt is anchored to the outboard lap pretensioner through two anchor plates that are bolted together. The bolt that was supposed to tie the two anchors together wasn’t properly assembled.”

Tesla is just a glorified Mobility Scooter. You charge it, you drive it.

The only one good thing about them Teslas is… they burn really gewd!  ;-)

What's wrong with these people, don't they know that you're supposed to wait for enough people to die so that the settlements match the cost of recall?

Amateurs!

Don't forget kiddies, that it was rated 5 1/2 stars out of 5 by the Federal Government without being tested.

Narrator: A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.

Business woman on plane: Are there a lot of these kinds of accidents?

Narrator: You wouldn't believe.

Business woman on plane: Which car company do you work for?

Narrator: A major one.

Tesla ought to take a cue from Crapple.

Exactly.  It's incredible how teflon-coated Tesla is.  They do nothing but lie, miss estimates, miss guidance, burn cash, issue stock, build crappy cars, and lie some more.  Their executives stick around long enough to vest their options, get to know Musk, figure out it's all going to blow up some day, and then they run for the exits selling out as they go.  Elon isn't even a *good* carnival barker.  How could it be more clear that the company is a scam?  But up, up, up it goes.

The reality is this company goes out of business unless oil goes high and stays there.  But in this scam of a market, in a scam of a world, nothing makes sense.

Tesla is a status symbol for pitiful yuppies and other imbeciles yearning to conform to an image.  If apple is any indication, this company should be able to sell lots and lots of their semi useful product at extreme high prices.

@Looney I recently got a low mileage 2013 Nissan Leaf and love it. Wife and I fight on who gets to drive it. The loser drives the smelly, noisy, expensive to operate ICE. If I win the lottery the 1st thing I will buy is a Tesla. Once you go electric you'll never go back.

"glorified mobility scooter"? Guess you have never driven one, or pulled up beside one at a light. It would blow your ICE away. Even my 107hp Leaf pushes me back in the seat when accelerating from a standstill.

Would that acceleration be coming from the big rig behind you?

Staring at the traffic lights until a shade of green comes up that you like, while patting yourself on the back, is hazardous to your health in all small cars.

Over engineering has its limits.  Basically, engineers cover the essential features in the first pass so they have to continually make more shit up to justify their jobs.  Hence, shit gets over-engineered and more expensive over-time.  Cars would be essentially unaffordable to most of the middle class, but that's the beauty of sub-prime auto loans.  Everyone can have an over-engineered and expensive car with only 8 year payments.

it is the wide availability and low price of embedded controllers.  you can put a powerful cpu in ANYTHING for less than $5.  I spend >50% of my professional time designing systems and writing code for gizmos with embedded controllers, and I will also be the first to say that they are VASTLY overused.  Way too many engineers go into a sweat at the idea of all that cpu power not being used, and tack on more bells and whistles without thinking if the customer wants it.   Feature bloat, at the expense of robustitude.

Worst (my opinion) was the 3rd generation Prius.  They were so in love with their central-dash LCD screen that they put everything on it.  Wanna tweak the temperature or the airflow on the heating system?  You gotta punch through about 6 buttons on an LCD menu to get there ......  vs reaching over and tweaking a knob on the console.  Should be illegal - worse than texting.

I suspect that they had built up a long laundry-list of other embarrassing glitches....none serious enough for a recall, but all of them wanting to be repaired.  The spin on this is really good -- they are being proactive before any injuries or lawsuits and happily checking everyone's car --- and at the same time, they get to perform tweaks to clean up a few things they don't want to talk about.

Was that achieved at 0 degrees with the heater cranking full blast? From what I've heard it's less than 100 miles when it's bitter cold out. I have 10 products at home with rechargeable batteries that no longer work. every single solar devise I've ever bought is broke after a couple months. Without government subsidies and endless money printing by the Fed  Tesla would already be bankrupt! That's why Elon offered to refund all lost resale values even if it meant he'd go broke in the process. When the Fed Easy Money ends so does the Tesla Scam!

Mazda did exactly the same thing with the front end suspension's control arms on all of their CX-9s of a certain year. "Please bring your car into the dealership for a free checkup and we will determine if your car is one of the ones affected. If it is, you will get a loaner and we will replace the faulty pieces."

TESLA showed our lil car club three versions of the MODEL S.  absolutely amazing.  sitting in front of our Ferrari and Mclaren i realized

i was looking at the future no matter how much we're subsidizing that genius Musk.  762 HP, 0-60 in friggin under 3 sec for a 5,000lb car???

friggin unbelievable and half the price of the aforementioned.  unfriggin believable.  when i get the call back for a test drive, i'll report back

Company does a recall before any deaths occur and the stock price takes a hit. Do the right thing and your stock falls. The moral here is: Don't do anything and just hope it was a one-off.
