Russia Deploys Warship Off Syrian Coast To "Destroy Any Threats To Russian Planes"

Tyler Durden's picture

Despite demands from France's Hollande, America's Obama, and NATO's Stoltenberg that this situation not esclate, it appears Putin is not taking the shooting down of a fighter jet lying down. The seemingly cagey confirmation by NATO and Obama of Turkey's claims that Russia invaded its airspace has been rebuked by Russia which claims the Hmeimim airbase radar shows the attacking Turkish plane violating Syrian airspace. In response, Russia is moving a Cruiser 'Moskva' off the coast to strengthen air-defenses - just as French and US carriers are on their way.

Here is The Turkish version mapping of the flight paths.

Russia claims otherwise:

  • HMEIMIM AIRBASE'S RADAR SYSTEM RECORDS VIOLATION OF SYRIAN AIRSPACE BY ATTACKING TURKISH WARPLANE - RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY

And is escalating:

  • RUSSIAN 'MOSKVA" CRUISER TO GO TO AREA IN COASTAL LATAKIA TO STRENGTHEN AIR DEFENSE IN SYRIA - RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY

The Missile cruiser in question:

The reason for the deployment:

  • RUSSIAN ARMED FORCES GENERAL STAFF: NONE OF OUR PARTNERS, COUNTRIES FIGHTING ISIL HAVE EVER TOLD US THAT SO-CALLED MODERATE OPPOSITION UNITS WERE IN AREA WHERE SU-24 DOWNED
  • NO ATTEMPTS REGISTERED ON PART OF TURKISH PLANE TO GET IN TOUCH OR ESTABLISH VISUAL CONTACT WITH OUR CREW VIA OBJECTVE CONTROL DEVICES - RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINSTRY
  • WARSHIP TO DESTROY ANY THREATS SEEN TO RUSSIAN PLANES: IFX

Specifically, as RT reports, the steps announced by Russian top brass as the following:Three steps as announced by top brass:

  1. Each and every strike groups’ operation is to be carried out under the guise of fighter jets
  2. Air defense to be boosted with the deployment of Moskva guided missile cruiser off Latakia coast with an aim to destroy any target that may pose danger
  3. Military contacts with Turkey to be suspended

Just like the downing of flight MH17 over Ukraine, it has quickly become a case of "he said, she said":

Rudskoy said the Russian warplane did not violate Turkish airspace. Additionally, according to the Hmeymim airfield radar, it was the Turkish fighter jet that actually entered Syrian airspace as it attacked the Russian bomber. The Turkish fighter jet made no attempts to contact Russian pilots before attacking the bomber, Rudskoy added.

“We assume the strike was carried out with a close range missile with an infra-red seeker,” Rudskoy said. “The Turkish jet made no attempts to communicate or establish visual contact with our crew that our equipment would have registered. The Su-24 was hit by a missile over Syria’s territory."

Sergey Rudskoy, a top official with the Russian General Staff, condemned the attack on the Russian bomber in Syrian airspace by a Turkish fighter jet as “a severe violation of international law”. He stressed that the Su-24 was downed over the Syrian territory. The crash site was four kilometers away from the Turkish border, he said.

As a result, Russia now plans to implement new measures aimed at strengthening the security of the country’s air base in Syria and in particular to bolster air defense. Russian guided missile cruiser Moskva, equipped with the ‘Fort’ air defense system, similar to the S-300, will be deployed off Latakia province's coast.

"We warn that every target posing a potential threat will be destroyed,” lieutenant general Sergey Rudskoy said during the briefing.

“All military contacts with Turkey will be suspended,” he added.

Furthermore, as the Russian Ministry of Defense explained, going forward, any Turkish plane that enters Syrian airspace will be fair game.

And again, all this is happening as both the French carrier de Gaulle and the US carrier CVN-75 USS Harry S. Truman are on their way to a very dangerous rendezvous off the Syrian coast.

So just as we warned in September, the situation has become a complete rerun of the 2013 Syria "Mediterranean" showdown, with full naval engagement by all parties, except this time the tensions are significantly escalated, a Russian fighter jet has just been taken down, US and French aircraft carriers are arriving in weeks, and Putin will not hestitate to go as far as he has to in order to save face.

"The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has even begun approaching the Euphrates River east of Aleppo, which would effectively cut off ISIS [ISIL] from its supply lines leading out of Turkish territory," Cartalucci narrates in his latest article for New Eastern Outlook.

This explains a lot about today's shoot down. Turkey is desperate to hold open supplies to ISIS.

I spent time in Turkey in the 1990s and got a belly full.  I could tell stories for days.  I think Turkey was directed to do what they did.  They are one of the most war like cultures I have ever seen but I don't think they are stupid enough to poke the bear with a stick.

Wait - is this is the same Russia that's gone haywire-cowboy in skirting, invading, and penetrating airspaces all over the world? I think I'll wait for proof of what happened in this tragedy before jumping to conclusions.

Headline: "Russian bombers penetrated U.S. airspace at least 16 times in the past 10 days."

Headline: "Russian war planes 'rehearsing attacks' in UK airspace

Headline: "What are these Russian strategic nuclear bombers doing infiltrating NATO airspace?"

Headline: "Why Putin's warplanes are penetrating European airspace

And:
"Turkey said Monday that a Russian warplane along the Syrian border violated its airspace, prompting it to scramble F-16 fighter jets and summon the Russian ambassador in protest . . . Russia admitted the plane had entered Turkey but insisted it was "by mistake." They tried to assure Ankara it would not happen again.  . . . Davutoglu said during an interview with Haber Turk television that NATO-member Turkey would enforce its rules of engagement if its airspace is violated. . . . Also Monday, Turkey's military said a MIG-29 jet had harassed two Turkish F-16s for five minutes and 40 seconds on Sunday by locking its radar onto them. In a brief statement, the military said the incident occurred while 10 F-16s were patrolling the Turkish-Syrian border. " http://www.cbsnews.com/news/russia-invading-turkish-airspace-no-accident...

@scruffy. Your headlines are baloney. You will find that far from penetrating US airspace the Russians were only in an arbitrary potential transit area - air defence identification zones (ADIZ) - before entering US airspace.

there's another post above that is completely accurate.  that Russian SU-24 would have only been in Turkish airspace for 20-30 seconds.  So if the Turkish planes decided to attack it, this means that they chased it down in Syrian airspace.  Or that they fired a missile into Syrian airspace.  This is a serious mess.

That means that they are not a Turkish "ally."

Remember Putin used this same excuse to invade Ukraine: ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine were under attack.

If anyone remembers 1939 or has read about it, Hitler used the same excuse to invade the Rheinland.  Of course, that wasn't his real reason.  That was just the excuse.  Same for Putin and Ergodan.

Putin set the rules of "defending ethnic diaspora outside of national borders" with his invasion of eastern Ukraine.

I'm betting this is a 'wise-up' moment for Putin...

Seems he definitely underestimated the extent to which the U.S. would go in making Russia feel the pain for upstaging the U.S. as regards ISIS, and for daring to intervene militarily for Assad.

He's not going to make that mistake again.

Turkey didn't act on its own initiative - this was U.S. backed - you can tell by how fast the U.S. came out with the 'Well, you deserved it!' line.

So I'm betting he'll place all the assets needed in the theatre and will prevent U.S. warships from operating off the Syrian coast - yep - military blockade. Maybe he'll let France thru - but not the U.S.

Will be an interesting confrontation....

NATO in reality is USA with support actors holding various useful add on specialities. I have family in the UK forces and I can tell you, morale is not high. Budget cuts, political correctness, the realty that our government do not take care of those who come home maimed have taken their toll. Add the worry of poor / unreliable kit and the reality is that the British army as a whole is a paper tiger. In the recent Afghan conflict they had the fortress suply depot camp Bastion to retreat to for kit repair and resuply. In a fast moving conflict they will quickly run out of fighting capacity. I suspect a lot of other NATO members are the same - geared up to skirmish with ' insurgents' and run 'peace keeping' patrols but no longer able to either defend or advance  against a professional adversary of significant size.

Let's hope NATO keeps its head ( not looking likely) because if they get a bloody nose from the Russians they will try to save the day with battlefield nukes, and from there with ICBM's.

Much more about the shoot-down here:

http://theaviationist.com/2015/11/24/ruaf-su-24-shot-down-by-turkey/

Not the first encounter:

"If confirmed this was not the first Russian planes breached into the Turkish airspace. On Oct. 3 and 4 a Russian Air Force Su-30SM and Su-24 aircraft violated Ankara’s sovereign airspace in the Hatay region. NATO said that the Russian combat planes entered Turkish airspace despite Turkish authorities’ “clear, timely and repeated warnings.” In that case, TuAF F-16s in QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) were scrambled to identify the intruder, after which the Russian planes departed Turkish airspace. Nevertheless, as if violating the airspace of a NATO member was not enough, the Russian Su-30SM maintained a radar lock on one or both the F-16s for a full 5 minutes and 40 seconds. According the Russians, the violation was due to a “navigation error.” Following the incident Ankara said it would shot down any aircraft violating their sovereign airspace as done in the past with the Syrian Mig-23 and Mi-17."

Rudskoy said the Russian warplane did not violate Turkish airspace. Additionally, according to the Hmeymim airfield radar, it was the Turkish fighter jet that actually entered Syrian airspace as it attacked the Russian bomber.

see the analysis by ZH readers on previous pages.  It looks like this ...

there's another post ... that Russian SU-24 would have only been in Turkish airspace for 20-30 seconds.  So if the Turkish planes decided to attack it, this means that they chased it down in Syrian airspace.  Or that they fired a missile into Syrian airspace.  This is a serious mess.

What has RT got to do with anything?

This the official Russian MOD position:

http://eng.mil.ru/en/news_page/country/more.htm?id=12066682@egNews

The missile hit the Su-24M aircraft over the territory of Syria. The bomber crash place is on the territory of Syria four kilometres far from the borderline. The Su-24M crew managed to eject. According to the preliminary data, fire from the ground killed one of the pilots.

The objective monitoring data shows that the Russian aircraft did not cross the Turkish borderline.

Data received from the Syrian Air Defence Forces confirmed this fact as well.

Moreover, radar reconnaissance data, which was received from the Hmeymim airbase, registered Syrian airspace violation by the attacking aircraft of the Turkish Air Force.

...

First: All the activities of the attack aviation will be carried out only under cover of fighter aircraft.

Second: Air defence will be reinforced. For that purpose, the Moskva cruiser equipped with air defence system Fort analogous to the S-300 one will go to the shore zone of Latakia. Russian Defence Ministry warns that all the potentially dangerous targets will be destroyed.

Third: Contacts with Turkey will be terminated at the military level.

I suspect the retribution will be on multiple fronts. Economic, on the ground with the Kurds and likely testing some Russian missiles at Turkish jets threatening Russian interests.

By Putin's own logic (in Ukraine) Turkey has every right to shoot down Russian jets that are bombing ethic Turks -- i.e., Syrian "Turkmen" -- even if they are not in Turkish airspace.

The aggressor sets the rules, and since the annexation / invasion of Ukraine, Russia has been the aggressor.

Of course, unlike Putin in Ukraine, the Turks actually own up to their acts.  Does anyone still believe that Russian forces have not torn the insignia off of their fatigues and invaded eastern Ukraine?i

The Turkish military, intelligence agencies and even the borderguards are involved with it!

The filthy Turkish government, the bastard of the Middle East, has always done NATO's dirty work.  Going back to the Cuban Missile Crises, where the US Government put nuclear weapons right outside Russia with Turkish consent for favors, Turkey has been at the center of controversy that could end disastrously.  Go back to the genocide of the Armenians in 1915, and you can see a long history of evil in this group.  They currently have targeted the Kurds for extermination, and the US Government is fine with that too.  Evil begets evil.

Now they are going to pick a fight with Russia?  Don't make us laugh.  If this is the plan, to have Turkey kill the Archduke, bring it on.  Time to get your stupid war started.  All you are going to do is destroy every State in Europe, the US, and the Middle East.  You masters of the universe are going to ruin yourselves and free all of us.
