Russia Deploys Warship Off Syrian Coast To "Destroy Any Threats To Russian Planes"

Tyler Durden's picture

Despite demands from France's Hollande, America's Obama, and NATO's Stoltenberg that this situation not esclate, it appears Putin is not taking the shooting down of a fighter jet lying down. The seemingly cagey confirmation by NATO and Obama of Turkey's claims that Russia invaded its airspace has been rebuked by Russia which claims the Hmeimim airbase radar shows the attacking Turkish plane violating Syrian airspace. In response, Russia is moving a Cruiser 'Moskva' off the coast to strengthen air-defenses - just as French and US carriers are on their way.

Here is The Turkish version mapping of the flight paths.

Russia claims otherwise:

  • HMEIMIM AIRBASE'S RADAR SYSTEM RECORDS VIOLATION OF SYRIAN AIRSPACE BY ATTACKING TURKISH WARPLANE - RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY

And is escalating:

  • RUSSIAN 'MOSKVA" CRUISER TO GO TO AREA IN COASTAL LATAKIA TO STRENGTHEN AIR DEFENSE IN SYRIA - RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY

The Missile cruiser in question:

The reason for the deployment:

  • RUSSIAN ARMED FORCES GENERAL STAFF: NONE OF OUR PARTNERS, COUNTRIES FIGHTING ISIL HAVE EVER TOLD US THAT SO-CALLED MODERATE OPPOSITION UNITS WERE IN AREA WHERE SU-24 DOWNED
  • NO ATTEMPTS REGISTERED ON PART OF TURKISH PLANE TO GET IN TOUCH OR ESTABLISH VISUAL CONTACT WITH OUR CREW VIA OBJECTVE CONTROL DEVICES - RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINSTRY
  • WARSHIP TO DESTROY ANY THREATS SEEN TO RUSSIAN PLANES: IFX

Specifically, as RT reports, the steps announced by Russian top brass as the following:Three steps as announced by top brass:

  1. Each and every strike groups’ operation is to be carried out under the guise of fighter jets
  2. Air defense to be boosted with the deployment of Moskva guided missile cruiser off Latakia coast with an aim to destroy any target that may pose danger
  3. Military contacts with Turkey to be suspended

Just like the downing of flight MH17 over Ukraine, it has quickly become a case of "he said, she said":

Rudskoy said the Russian warplane did not violate Turkish airspace. Additionally, according to the Hmeymim airfield radar, it was the Turkish fighter jet that actually entered Syrian airspace as it attacked the Russian bomber. The Turkish fighter jet made no attempts to contact Russian pilots before attacking the bomber, Rudskoy added.

“We assume the strike was carried out with a close range missile with an infra-red seeker,” Rudskoy said. “The Turkish jet made no attempts to communicate or establish visual contact with our crew that our equipment would have registered. The Su-24 was hit by a missile over Syria’s territory."

Sergey Rudskoy, a top official with the Russian General Staff, condemned the attack on the Russian bomber in Syrian airspace by a Turkish fighter jet as “a severe violation of international law”. He stressed that the Su-24 was downed over the Syrian territory. The crash site was four kilometers away from the Turkish border, he said.

As a result, Russia now plans to implement new measures aimed at strengthening the security of the country’s air base in Syria and in particular to bolster air defense. Russian guided missile cruiser Moskva, equipped with the ‘Fort’ air defense system, similar to the S-300, will be deployed off Latakia province's coast.

"We warn that every target posing a potential threat will be destroyed,” lieutenant general Sergey Rudskoy said during the briefing.

“All military contacts with Turkey will be suspended,” he added.

Furthermore, as the Russian Ministry of Defense explained, going forward, any Turkish plane that enters Syrian airspace will be fair game.

And again, all this is happening as both the French carrier de Gaulle and the US carrier CVN-75 USS Harry S. Truman are on their way to a very dangerous rendezvous off the Syrian coast.

So just as we warned in September, the situation has become a complete rerun of the 2013 Syria "Mediterranean" showdown, with full naval engagement by all parties, except this time the tensions are significantly escalated, a Russian fighter jet has just been taken down, US and French aircraft carriers are arriving in weeks, and Putin will not hestitate to go as far as he has to in order to save face.

I folow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change
An August summer night
Soldiers passing by
Listening to the wind of change

The world is closing in
Did you ever think
That we could be so close, like brothers
The future's in the air
I can feel it everywhere
Blowing with the wind of change

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
in the wind of change

Walking down the street
Distant memories
Are buried in the past forever
I folow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams
With you and me
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
in the wind of change

The wind of change
Blows straight into the face of time
Like a stormwind that will ring the freedom bell
For peace of mind
Let your balalaika sing
What my guitar wants to say

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams
With you and me
Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away

US-backed forces have right to self-defense, but others do not - State Department

https://www.rt.com/usa/323339-state-syria-russia-turkey/

Turkey and the rebels it backs northern Syria had the right to defend themselves against Russian airstrikes, State Department spokesman told reporters. The rebels reportedly killed one Russian pilot who ejected from the jet hit by a Turkish missile.

During the regular press briefing, Mark Toner said the Syrian government did not have such a right, though.

When asked by RT's Gayane Chichakyan if the State Department considered the rebels who reportedly killed the Russian pilots "moderates," Toner replied:

"We’ve seen conflicting reports. One pilot may not have been killed. If these ‘Turkomen’ were actually being attacked by Russian strikes, they have every right to defend themselves.”

AP's diplomatic correspondent Matt Lee asked a follow up question.

"Doesn’t that apply to everyone, not just rebels backed by West? Including the Assad regime?"...

...Toner repeated several times that Washington stood by Turkey as a NATO ally, and its "right to protect its sovereign airspace”, while refusing to comment on the specifics of this morning's downing of a Russian jet because, by his admission, he had no details yet.

The State Department spokesman confirmed the US was supplying TOW missiles – seen in a video purportedly showing the rebels destroying a Russian search-and-rescue helicopter – to the"moderates" in northern Syria who were supposedly battling Islamic State forces.

Another revelation at the briefing on Tuesday was that the "de-confliction" mechanism established between the US and Russia last month to avoid clashes in the skies over Syria did not apply to any other members of the US-led coalition.

So we fund, train and arm ISIS and then say they have a right to self defense? Saddle up boys and bring some rope. We also have a right to self defense and this treason cannot be tolerated.

FACT: Russian media has a better grasp at just what the fuck is going on than the Western media propaganda outlets.

Amazing, no? Things that were discussed and only hinted at in the alt media, for years, which turned out to be true after all (eg, Iraq war lies), suddenly the the West starts fucking with Russia here and there, and lo and behold, Russian media starts sayin what we're all thinkin! (well, not the western propaganda rags, like NYT, WaPo, Guardian, etc) whose credibility was all but destroyed by 15 years of bullshit, Russian media has more to gain by lying LESS than the West at this point, the western narrative is so fucked up insane, schizophrenic beyond words by now.

Even if SU-24 in fact did violated that pathetic tiny space as Turkish map shows, by the time their F16 reached it it must have been clear SU-24 did not intend to attack any Turkish targets and had no intention to be in their territory over prolonged time. Which mean they should have warned Russia on administrative level or F16 could contact SU-24 and inform about it. The fact that F16 actually chased SU-24 all the way to Syria for shoot to kill says a lot about intentions.

Credible sources? You do realize that objective reporting is dead? We live in a propaganda world where the consumer needs to read between the lines and think for themselves using logic and reason.
A 2 second search of Google will provide all the "credible sources" you're asking for.

Did the Syrian map change? I didn't realize the Islamic State was a recognized country that Syria "had lost control over" and therefore had no territorial rights over.

I guess all the oil trucks entering Turkey from Syria is not convincing enough for you that Turkey aids and abets ISIS.

"In the wake of the raid that killed Abu Sayyaf, suspicions of an undeclared alliance have hardened. One senior western official familiar with the intelligence gathered at the slain leader’s compound said that direct dealings between Turkish officials and ranking Isis members was now “undeniable”.

“There are hundreds of flash drives and documents that were seized there,” the official told the Observer. “They are being analysed at the moment, but the links are already so clear that they could end up having profound policy implications for the relationship between us and Ankara.”

Just watched a very interesting short episode on the downing of the plane on CNBC with a reporter from Turkey (Richard Engel). Among other stuff, he said:
- The russian jet violated Turkish airspace just for a few seconds.
- Was that enough to prompt this very aggressive response from Turkey downing a Russian jet?
- Was there another motive?
- Many believe there is another motive.
- It was because of the targets Russia was hitting.
- Russia was targeting Syrian rebels. They are ethnically cousins of the Turkis nations.
- This border crossing may have been a pretext to act.
- To send a message to Moscow that it won't accept this bombing and to alert NATO that it needs more help.
- An hour after this incident happened, the prime minister spoke. He only spoke a minute or so. Turkey is trying to make this look domestically like no big deal.

Wow! Way too much questioning of the official story and also a lot of actual journalistic work done here! Go Richard!

If you ask me, he is in danger of being replaced soon (sent on a 5 year mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo or so...)

Now the General Staff is elaborating additional security measures for the Russian airbase.

First: All the activities of the attack aviation will be carried out only under cover of fighter aircraft.

Second: Air defence will be reinforced. For that purpose, the Moskva cruiser equipped with air defence system Fort analogous to the S-300 one will go to the shore zone of Latakia. Russian Defence Ministry warns that all the potentially dangerous targets will be destroyed.

Third: Contacts with Turkey will be terminated at the military level.

It is doubtful that Turkey’s actions were done in isolation. From Dave Lindorff “Turkey’s action, using US-supplied F-16 planes, was taken with the full knowledge and advance support of the US. In fact, given Turkey’s vassal status as a member of US-dominated NATO, it could well be that Ankara was put up to this act of brinksmanship by the US.” (see: www.counterpunch.org/2015/11/24/an-invisible-us-hand-leading-to-war-turkeys-downing-of-a-russian-jet-was-an-act-of-madness and www.counterpunch.org/2015/11/24/turkey-downs-russian-jet-to-draw-nato-and-us-deeper-into-syrian-quagmire).

let's say just for arguments sake that the SU-24 did enter into Turkish airspace with the full understanding that whether or not that actually happened is still very much unclear.

also taking for granted that the Turkish air force has the responsibility of defending the airspace and territorial integrity of their homeland against threats.

here my questions...

first being was the SU-24 armed? was it carrying any munitions at the time of the encounter? the reports say that the bomber was returning to base so it is reasonable to assume it had already dropped it's payload, unless the mission was aborted for some reason but nothing that has been reported so far suggests that is the case. if not was it necessary to shoot it down, could the Turks not have simply escorted the SU out of their airspace? after all as has been pointed out many times already the SU-24 is a bomber and no match for the F-16's that intercepted it in an encounter.

next IF the SU was in Turkish air space what was it's disposition? was it flying low and fast so as to avoid detection? was it's flight path suggestive of aggressive intent? was it closing in on any military positions such as bases, formations, posts ect? once again I have seen nothing to suggest that was the case and given where the SU crashed it could not have been in Turkish airspace for that long nor could it have penetrated that deeply. still more it was not escorted by air superiority fighters so honestly how much of a threat could it have really posed?

so is it reasonable to believe that that the Turks would have shot down a single Russian bomber that was probably not armed, not attempting to avoid radar, not under escort and apparently not displaying any aggression purely out of self defense?  again would they not simply have given it the boot, if for no other reason than to avoid a very unnecessary and extremely dangerous escalation?

and is it a coincidence that the SU 24 came down in the very same area the Turks demanded not but a few days ago that Russia stop bombing, those Turkmen, FSA, ISIS whatever positions in an obvious attempt to create a safe zone from which they could operate?  also was it also convenient timing that the Turkish AF was recently augmented by six (or was it 12) USAF F-16  fighters?

I think not.I mean I was born at night, just not last night.

this whole thing reeks of desperation, a last ditch effort to salvage the oust Assad at all cost plan and an ill advised attempt to intimidate Moscow into getting on bored with the program.

I don't think this will work quite they way they intended.

Think about the time required to identify the Russian jet and the time required to respond for the Turkish air-force.  This was planned.

Are you saying that the Russian Air Force isn't trying to violate airspace and pushing their luck all over the world?

There was a Russian bomber flying less than 40 MILES off the coast of California this summer! Countries all over the world are routinely scrambling to "escort" Russian aircraft out of their airspace almost daily now.

Its fucking amazing that this "waa waa everybody out to get Putin false flag frame up job" shit keeps being pushed. Compleltely embarrasing at this point...

1) Armed or not makes no difference in a border viloation. It's a warplane and its not the Turks responsibility or care to verify if its armed.

2) They warned the Russian aircraft 10 times in five minutes.

3) The USAF deployed six F15s to Incirlik. They weren't F16s. BTW. The F15 is the only fighter aircraft to have never lost an air to air in actual combat.

maybe so, or maybe it's all lies.

only time will tell.

BTW as far as the eagles spotless combat record, it's a little shallow and overstated isn't it?

they have never gone up against any quality competition, certainly nothing close to what the Russian air force can provide.

I suspect that spotless record would be broken pretty quickly in the event of a direct conflict between the two.

but I sincerely hope we don't find out.

NATO has declared the war against Russia a while ago, using all but military means at their disposal, even going as far as arming Al-Qaeda (please can someone explain what exactly is an Al-Qaeda "associate"?), now the shots have been fired as well.

Let's face it, NATO considers only 2 options: subdue Russia by non military means or subdue Russia by military means, there is no third option that they find acceptable.

This planet is not big enough for NATO and anyone else.
