Russia Deploys Warship Off Syrian Coast To "Destroy Any Threats To Russian Planes"

Tyler Durden's picture

Despite demands from France's Hollande, America's Obama, and NATO's Stoltenberg that this situation not esclate, it appears Putin is not taking the shooting down of a fighter jet lying down. The seemingly cagey confirmation by NATO and Obama of Turkey's claims that Russia invaded its airspace has been rebuked by Russia which claims the Hmeimim airbase radar shows the attacking Turkish plane violating Syrian airspace. In response, Russia is moving a Cruiser 'Moskva' off the coast to strengthen air-defenses - just as French and US carriers are on their way.

Here is The Turkish version mapping of the flight paths.

Russia claims otherwise:

  • HMEIMIM AIRBASE'S RADAR SYSTEM RECORDS VIOLATION OF SYRIAN AIRSPACE BY ATTACKING TURKISH WARPLANE - RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY

And is escalating:

  • RUSSIAN 'MOSKVA" CRUISER TO GO TO AREA IN COASTAL LATAKIA TO STRENGTHEN AIR DEFENSE IN SYRIA - RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY

The Missile cruiser in question:

The reason for the deployment:

  • RUSSIAN ARMED FORCES GENERAL STAFF: NONE OF OUR PARTNERS, COUNTRIES FIGHTING ISIL HAVE EVER TOLD US THAT SO-CALLED MODERATE OPPOSITION UNITS WERE IN AREA WHERE SU-24 DOWNED
  • NO ATTEMPTS REGISTERED ON PART OF TURKISH PLANE TO GET IN TOUCH OR ESTABLISH VISUAL CONTACT WITH OUR CREW VIA OBJECTVE CONTROL DEVICES - RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINSTRY
  • WARSHIP TO DESTROY ANY THREATS SEEN TO RUSSIAN PLANES: IFX

Specifically, as RT reports, the steps announced by Russian top brass as the following:Three steps as announced by top brass:

  1. Each and every strike groups’ operation is to be carried out under the guise of fighter jets
  2. Air defense to be boosted with the deployment of Moskva guided missile cruiser off Latakia coast with an aim to destroy any target that may pose danger
  3. Military contacts with Turkey to be suspended

Just like the downing of flight MH17 over Ukraine, it has quickly become a case of "he said, she said":

Rudskoy said the Russian warplane did not violate Turkish airspace. Additionally, according to the Hmeymim airfield radar, it was the Turkish fighter jet that actually entered Syrian airspace as it attacked the Russian bomber. The Turkish fighter jet made no attempts to contact Russian pilots before attacking the bomber, Rudskoy added.

“We assume the strike was carried out with a close range missile with an infra-red seeker,” Rudskoy said. “The Turkish jet made no attempts to communicate or establish visual contact with our crew that our equipment would have registered. The Su-24 was hit by a missile over Syria’s territory."

Sergey Rudskoy, a top official with the Russian General Staff, condemned the attack on the Russian bomber in Syrian airspace by a Turkish fighter jet as “a severe violation of international law”. He stressed that the Su-24 was downed over the Syrian territory. The crash site was four kilometers away from the Turkish border, he said.

As a result, Russia now plans to implement new measures aimed at strengthening the security of the country’s air base in Syria and in particular to bolster air defense. Russian guided missile cruiser Moskva, equipped with the ‘Fort’ air defense system, similar to the S-300, will be deployed off Latakia province's coast.

"We warn that every target posing a potential threat will be destroyed,” lieutenant general Sergey Rudskoy said during the briefing.

“All military contacts with Turkey will be suspended,” he added.

Furthermore, as the Russian Ministry of Defense explained, going forward, any Turkish plane that enters Syrian airspace will be fair game.

And again, all this is happening as both the French carrier de Gaulle and the US carrier CVN-75 USS Harry S. Truman are on their way to a very dangerous rendezvous off the Syrian coast.

So just as we warned in September, the situation has become a complete rerun of the 2013 Syria "Mediterranean" showdown, with full naval engagement by all parties, except this time the tensions are significantly escalated, a Russian fighter jet has just been taken down, US and French aircraft carriers are arriving in weeks, and Putin will not hestitate to go as far as he has to in order to save face.

Good Afternoon Boys and Girls! Ok, excellent article from Asia Times.

http://atimes.com/2015/11/downed-jet-bashes-russia-turkey-economic-ties/

I prayed last night and it appears my prayer has been answered. The Missing Pilot is out of Harm's Way. This is great news as the Syrian Army rescued him. It appears he landed in a different ravine/gully and was able to elude capture/execution. Thanks be to JESUS CHRIST.

These are dark times and soon people will need to choose between dark and light. Forget about the Faggot Transgender movement in the US and the economy, the time is here and now and we all saw this coming.

My predictions are that within the next 48 hours Russia will shoot down a US, Turkish or NATO plane and then ALL BETS ARE OFF.

Assuming Putin plays a cooler game of poker than me, figure at the least:

Turkstream deal is dead.

RosAtom deal is dead.

Russia will reprice Turkish gaz

Turkey is a NO GO Zone for Russian Tourists (note to all ZHrs...I would avoid Turkey like the plague now).

Kurds will be armed by Russia

Iran and Russia will double down on Syria - it is now kill or be killed in Syria. There will be no compromise here

France will forget its dead and dying and infiltrators and swing back to carrying water for that Nigger Obama.

Going to be an interesting winter. We will see a drop off in Ukrainian Trolls as they freeze to death and the exports of their women increase.

Say "Goodbye" to TRK's Mercs and Troops near the SYRian Border, along with TRK's Plans for a "Buffer Zone".

It would be interesting if RUS just continue to unleash bombs, cruise missiles, and drones along the Border; and allow SYR to "Annex" a healthy chunk of what TRK allegely annexed years ago as "Payback" for helping out ISIL.

Should TRK-friendly Turkmen "Rebels/Mercs" be considered TRKish Assets?  They "are" buying up/smuggling ISIL's SYRian-bounty based Oil.

IMHO, TRK's actions serve as open, declarative Acts of War against SYR and its supporters RUS and IRN - stepping "Waist Deep" into the WarZone with Troops and Missile(s).

This Theater should not be considered as a SYRian Civil War.

So long for Turkstream.  On the bright side, BRG or its neighbors "might" have another chance at RUSsian Pipeline.

I'd like to see TRK try to close the Bosphorous to RUSian Shipping/Air Traffic after this.

ISIS is a USA-Israel-Saudi creation. Trained, funded and armed (and still arms) by them all.

Turkey, basically the USA's bitch because Erdogan wants to be a king, only too happy to directly fund ISIS by buying their captured oil, help arm ISIS, and take the opportunity to kill Kurds in the bargain.

The Axis of USA-Israel-Saudi have most deliberately avoided doing harm to ISIS at all, until Russia came in and showed the world how easy it was to destroy ISIS. Now the USA is embarassed into looking like it is trying to do something, but is still trying to preserve ISIS in different ways.

France is also a support of ISIS along with Britain. The French government's policys and aid to USA/ISIS directly enbaled the Paris masacre.  If the French want to find a guilty party for the slaughter in Paris they simply can look at their own government.

The USA and Turkey was/is most distressed that Russia was destroying ISIS's ability to fund itself through selling oil via Turkey, and so the USA pre-planned with Turkey the shooting down of a Russian military plane with the idea that it might slow down Russia or scare them off, a trial balloon.

The shooting down of the Russian plane must have been pre-planned since Turkey could not have done it on the spot in a matter of seconds. Turkey must have got the OK from the US to do it, simply because it was a massively dangerous thing to do.  In effect the USA has shot down a Russian military plane.  And Russia knows it, and will respond in some way.

It certainly must not be preplanned. Those F-16s routinly patrols over the syrian border. Since russia violated turkis airspace a few months ago, security tightened. And even in the russian version of the radar route, there is plenty of time to react to an unknown bomber jet coming towards your border at a speed of 1200 km/hour.

Whether the Russian jet skimmed across Turkish airspace for a few seconds or not, the right of self defence applies if there is a perceived threat. In this case there clearly was not since the SU-24 was heading home after a bombing mission and was in no way a threat toTurkey.

A parallel: If you shoot a burglar when he's facing you with a gun or knife in his hand, you will probably not be charged. If you shoot him when he's running away from you, you probably will be charged.

Turkey had no right to shoot down the Russian SU-24 and it looks to me like it was a pre-planned plot with NATO/US.

So you admit that russia is in any case "the burglar" in your metaphor. I dont even need to respond your own words describe the situation.

If your logic is correct, I can fly a F-16 to bomb canada, by the way coming back home I can violate USA airspace, but that doesnt make me a threat to USA? you are clearly out of your mind. A bomber plane is threat no matter what. Those syrians western elites and russia bombing is in fact human beings + our neighbours.  Especially the area where the plane has crashed, there is no DAESH or ISIS ( whatever the fuk its name is) threat at all. Those places are filled with civilians who has ethnical bond with turkish community. How blind did you get with mainstream media not to see syria is getting wiped out by external forces.

And to all the russian fan boys, fighting your own war is one thing fighting a proxy war is completly different. Look what happened in USA-Vietnam. If things got really serious, all the super mega ultra world powers fighting in syria can be dwarfed by turkish miltary intervation.

"So you admit that russia is in any case "the burglar" in your metaphor."

Not at all.

I was simply stating that EVEN IF the Russian jet had crossed Turkish airspace for a few seconds, Turkey did not have a legitimate right to self-defence since the SU-24 was not a threat and was heading home (the equivalent of a burglar running away in my analogy). But we don't know if he had crossed Turkish airspace to be where he was. He could have flown around the edge of their airspace.

Good try but you missed the subtlety of the situation.

FACT: If one would see a criminal running away from his house with knife in his hands and one would be capable to neutralize this criminal using physical force - it would be necessary to do that. Because that criminal can do other crimes if not stopped.

Also, both sides claim evidence for their benefit. Both Turkey, NATO say that Russian Su-24 violated Turkey airspace and was still in it when was taken down, and Russia Federation claims opposite that Su-24 never crossed Turkey airspace and was downed in Syria airspace.

FACT that Russia Federation has violated Turkey airspace and admitted before - does make Turkey version more believable.

Wed, 11/25/2015 - 09:07 | 6837293 vheissu

Actually you evade the question. I dont know where you live but think like this. If russian su-24 violated turkish border at Hatay, in exactly 23 mins bomber jet can reach my house in Ankara to drop bomb. Do you think it is ok to let anyone pass your border to see what happens ? You cannot let that happen, strike must be preemptive and every developed country does the same. and by the way i dont have negative thoughts about russia, i think russia and turkey great trade partners and great friends, but you need to see russia is to blame in this one. either coordinate your operations with Ankara or respond to the warnings, if not any aircraft will be shut down in the future as well. this is self defence.

Wed, 11/25/2015 - 10:04 | 6837509 smacker
smacker's picture

No I didn't evade anything.

Let's be quite clear about this: EVEN IF the Russian jet flew over Turkish airspace for a few seconds on its way back home - the geography of the terrain and border lends itself to doing that without malicious intent - it was not a threat to Turkey. Russia is not at war with Turkey (at least not yet) but watch this space.

But there is no credible evidence that it did fly over Turkish airspace. And it was flying away from Turkey at the time.

The most common explanation being proferred by independent analysts is that it was a carefully laid ambush authorised by the fascist Erdogan to protect the profits being made by his son from trading oil with the evil terrorist gang ISIS.

NATO has not provided support to Turkey for what it did, so invoking Article 5 will fail because other NATO members will not take part.

The take-away from this is that: Turkey is a supporter of ISIS.

But you already knew that. Right?

What we do know is that Putin is going move more S-300, S-400, Almaz Antey 2500, Pantsir S1, etc etc into Syria as he pushes the nice moderate rebels, who killed the Russian pilot, and the US Coalition back toward Iraq before Assad declares a no-fly zone over Syria.

1.) Georgia wanted to join NATO and EU. Russia Federation thought it as a threat for it's geopolitical intrests and started a war with Georgia. This war was well planned before military conflict started.

"Ossetian separatists began shelling Georgian villages on 1 August, with a sporadic response from Georgian peacekeepers in the region. The Georgian Army was sent to South Ossetia on 7 August to defend civilians and restore order.[30] Most of Tskhinvali, South Ossetia's capital, was recaptured in hours. Georgia later said it was also responding to Russia moving non-peacekeeping units into the country."

Russo-Georgian War

"According to Baluyevsky, a decision to invade Georgia was made by Putin before Medvedev was inaugurated President and Commander-in-Chief in May 2008. A detailed plan of military action was arranged and unit commanders were given specific orders in advance. In August 2008, according to Baluyevsky, Medvedev needed to issue a simple order: “Go” – and commanders would open sealed envelopes with combat orders that were given to them beforehand to commence the invasion. "

Putin Confirms the Invasion of Georgia Was Preplanned

2.) Ukraine had legit president and parliamentary elections in 2014. Results were approved by all countries including Russia Federation. That is why Russia Federation keeps signing agreements with Ukraine government. If it was illegal body of Ukraine government, not recognized by international community no one would make agreements with it.

Reason for Russia Federation hybrid war in Ukraine is as same as for Georgia. People of Ukraine wanted to join NATO and EU. That confilcts with Russia Federation intrests.

Of course there is  nothing anybody can do about it, we are simply helpless witnesses to mad neo-con war mongers.  All we can hope is they wipe themselves out and we can start over. Unfortuntely they will kill 10s of millions in the process.

That system can easily reach the area where the Russian bomber was shot down by the Turks and can also reach deep into Turkey itself. https://www.rt.com/news/323379-s400-russia-syria-airbase/

It means US will be forced reply on such step and will supply FSA with Stinger surface-to-air missile that will bring down Russian Federation Su-24 and Kamov Ka-50. That will mean also a threat to civil aviation if those Stingers goes in wrong hands. But US will have to reply on S-400.

Interesting armanents on that boat. Turkey won't be shooting down anymore Russian aircraft, and our nearby ships sure as hell won't engage it.

16 P-500 anti-ship missiles. Launched in salvo. In flight the group could co-ordinate their actions; one would fly to a higher altitude and use its active radar to search for targets, forwarding this data to the other missiles which remained at low altitude. The missiles were programmed so that half of a salvo would head for a carrier target, with the rest dividing between other ships. If the high-flying missile was shot down, another from the salvo would automatically pop up to take its place. All of the missiles would switch to active radar for the terminal phase of the attack. (wiki)

64 S-300F missiles. Considered the top surface to air missile. Range of 56 miles, speed of Mach 4, elevation of 82,000 feet. (wiki)

Is it really true that F-16s are still that good?  18 seconds?  I know the Turks don't have the avionics that Merican F-16's do but they fly that fighter jet.  What happened to the Junk-35 joint strike fighter?  I guess I can believe that an F-16 could shoot down pretty much any of the Sukhoi models because they are fighter bombers and not strictly fighters.  The current Migs are the same it seems.  That is what Russians build.  Big heavy fighter bombers and they are all twin tail dual turbine.  It does not seem that Russia is operating a single turbine air superiority fighter at this time.

Maybe everyone should stop killing each other?  We could use some roadwork to be done instead.

You can shoot down any jet from an ambush even F-22 whatever. When our bombers were covered by SU-30 fighters turks were whining about getting locked and dared not attack. But then we made a mistake: agreement with the US about flight safety and stopped covering our bombers. This mistake has costed us 1 SU-24 bomber, 1 MI-8 evacuation helicopter and 2 lives (a pilot and a mariner).

Seems we have some USA-ISIS fanboys here.  No doubt they enjoyed the videos of people getting their heads hacked off.  And were overjoyed at the French slaughter by ISIS - the evil that the Russian bomber was attacking, and getting shot down by Turkey on its return flight to base, and within Syrian territory at the time.

Beiing against ISIS, being all for the destruction of the murderous ISIS doesn't make one a Russian fanboy, especially since Russia is the only country really attacking ISIS>

"especially since Russia is the only country really attacking ISIS"

How did you come up with such conclusion? Because till today only Russia Federation and Syria is claiming that  Russia Federation bombs ISIS and not FSA.

But rest of the world claims opposite. That Russia Federation bombs FSA and not ISIS.

The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) did not release official airstrike reports for October 29-30. However, credible local activist sources continued to report instances of Russian airstrikes throughout Dera’a, Damascus, Homs, Idlib, and Aleppo. Russian airstrikes largely concentrated around rebel-held areas in the northern Homs countryside and within Aleppo City.

Also yesterday events show that Russia Federation was bombing FSA as they bought down Russian Helicopter which was searching for downed Su-24 pilots.

The FSA is a cut-out organisation between the CIA and ISIS. It's role is to receive weapons from the CIA and pass them on to ISIS. It takes people in, has them trained by US SF as supposed FSA members, then they move over to ISIS. This is standard cut-out plausible deniability 101.

That vaunted Russian Cruiser is a sitting duck. It is 1970-1990 tech. Those ships were made to be part of a massive blitz against an aircraft carrier and its task force by a first strike.  The problem is when a carrier knows they are in the area they fly a CAP over it almost 24 hours per day and keep it in the sites of escorting submarines so it can never launch a first strike. With a sub and cap it would last about 1 minute which is the time it would take from turning on its fire control radars and trying to get a missile off. Even if it got off one missle before being destroyed the carrier would have about 40 different chances to take that missle out even before it transitions to seeker head slew (the missle will be able to destroy a target).

Anything that hits that ship will sink it as it is a munitions factory waiting for an event to launch it sky high.

Even the Turks if they wanted to could sink it in a few minutes.

Here you see Putin making a massively major mistake in his intervention in Syria. He has little to gain and a lot to lose in showing just how problamatic Russian military prowess has become. If he does not win a quick victory, he will be bogged down in a war of attrition that he cannot win or escape from without losing massive credibility.

What you see here is the moron brigade starting WWIII.

From a pure military viewpoint, I agree.  Nothing the Russians have there is of consequence.  Butt he Russians have other leverage that is far more potent.  Natural Gas into Turkey, and arming the Kurds.

Turkey is very vulnerable here, and that is where I'd apply the pressure.

I think everyone, including the turks admit turkish jets are fair game now, but i doubt Russia will be doing the shooting, two words "denialable culpability".  Likely they will mysteriously ending up in the hands of the PKK the militant wing of the kurdish state. Maybe. But given that NATO has not provided support for what Turkey did, Russia might get away with shooting down one of Turkey's own jets, claiming it was providing air support to ISIS oil transport into Turkey.

I think this Daily Mail writer nails it with calling Turkey what they are - greedy, backstabbing, Radical Islamic fucksticks.

For President Erdogan, busy turning his own once staunchly secular country into an Islamist dictatorship — to the extent that Turkish football fans could boo and chant ‘Allahu Akbar’ during a minute’s silence for the Paris victims at a friendly match — the over-riding priority is Assad’s downfall.

He is desperate to get rid of the secular Assad and see a fellow Muslim Brotherhood government installed in Syria, as a valuable ally.

In pursuit of that end, Erdogan has openly supported jihadist groups in Syria opposed to Assad, including the Al-Nusra Front, which is proscribed as a terror organisation by the U.S. and Europe.

Turkey — a nation of 76 million people, which has long been trying to join the EU — is now teeming with Islamic fundamentalists and was, until very recently, turning a blind eye to jihadis from all over the world eager to make their way to join the anti-Assad insurgency in Syria via its border.

The Turkish frontier has long been described as a ‘two-way jihadist highway’ without checks, and the smuggling of weapons and funds through it to Islamic State is widely alleged.

In 2014, a photograph emerged showing what was said to be an Islamic State commander in a hospital bed in Turkey receiving treatment for battle wounds.

In light of all this, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s casual defence of the downing of the Russian fighter jet as a ‘national duty’ rang breathtakingly hollow.

For by any objective measure, a single Russian fighter jet crossing the Turkish border for a matter of seconds would pose no serious threat to Turkey’s sovereignty.

In fact, we should be under no illusion that this act was, in all probability, not so much an act of self-defence as a cold and calculated attempt on Turkey’s part to undermine Russia’s ferocious campaign of airstrikes against Islamic State, as well as its recently formed military alliance with Nato member France.

Crucially, the hostile act came on the back of relentless diplomatic pressure on Moscow — Turkey has been calling for a UN Security Council meeting to discuss Russia’s attacks on the Turkmen stronghold inside Syria and summoned the Russian ambassador to protest at the bombing of their villages.

If a deliberate provocation, it was also perfectly timed to coincide with this week’s flurry of meetings between French President Francois Hollande and world leaders, including David Cameron, Angela Merkel, Barack Obama and Putin.
