Continuing Jobless Claims Rise At Fastest Pace Since July 2013

Tyler Durden's picture

While initial claims collapsed 11k to 260k, practically cycle lows and the hovering at the lowest level since 1973. But in continuing claims, something is different. The last 4 weeks have seen continuing claims rise 2.85% - the fastest pace of increase since July 2013. Of course, none of that matters with a Fed set on hiking rates no matter what, but it is seasonally aberrant to see a surge of this scale this time of year.

Once again a significant turn in trend...

Which is notably out of line with seasonal trends...

Durable goods, spending, jobs.
Happy holidays indeed.
I can tell you all that while the kids are doing pretty good and we're "OK", our spending this Christmas season has so far been on some household stuff (new garage door opener) and just a few gifts for each person.  Overall, spending is down when considering got new "opener" new "tires" new iPad to replace the one Mrs K is holding together with electrical tape after she dropped it ....
Not normal pattern.
There's a general malaise out there.

I think the general syndrome is:

"Meet new thingamajiger, same as your old thingamajiger but made in 2015 and has less scratches than yours."

Old Ipad more or less same as new ipad.

Old Iphone more or less same as new iphone.

New Laptop? Not a whole lot faster or thinner than old laptop.

Product replacement cycles are stretching out a bit the old planned obsolescence model is kinda of not working anymore, because the income to allow splurging on every little upgrade every year is not there, everyones jobs and pay sucks and household expenses are too high.

There is no product out there that is a real upgrade from the previous version.

And there aren't enough kids being born by christian folk to splurge on so holiday spending will probably trend down until the economic situation for the middle class improves marginally.

I say christian folk, because its the only religion where everything is celebrated with presents lol every other religion is a scrooge mc-duck grumpy cat religion and bad for the eco.

Think about it... if it wasn't for XMAS seasonal sales would be dependent on weather and climate alone, christianity is a big economic driver.

Does this mean the unemployment rate will drop to 4.8?  Trytophan... plenty of tryptophan.

The government, who is the ultimate wisdom of the universe and the magic wand waver, has apparently spooked the employers out there with all the threats of mandatory wage hikes and continued legislation of Byzantine workplace rules.  On another happy note, I am sure many employers have seen what happens when they hire a lifer unemployment milker.  They work the minimum time to qualify after their current benefits run out, then get fired on purpose to start it again, which weighs on the employer's unemployment insurance tax rate.  Now that most employers have who they need to work already in place for the level of the economy, and which is trending down,  they are steering clear of the career deadbeats.  Who can blame them?
