Drone Whistleblower: Pilots Often High on Drugs; Refer To Kids As "Fun Size Terrorists"

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

The killings, part of the Obama administration’s targeted assassination program, are aiding terrorist recruitment and thus undermining the program’s goal of eliminating such fighters, the veterans added. Drone operators refer to children as “fun-size terrorists” and liken killing them to “cutting the grass before it grows too long,” said one of the operators, Michael Haas, a former senior airman in the Air Force. Haas also described widespread drug and alcohol abuse, further stating that some operators had flown missions while impaired.

Haas also described widespread alcohol and drug abuse among drone pilots. Drone operators, he said, would frequently get intoxicated using bath salts and synthetic marijuana to avoid possible drug testing and in an effort to “bend that reality and try to picture yourself not being there.” Haas said that he knew at least a half-dozen people in his unit who were using bath salts and that drug use had “impaired” them during missions.

– From the Intercept article: Former Drone Operators Say They Were “Horrified” by Cruelty of Assassination Program

I’ve highlighted the plight of several brave drone whistleblowers over the years who came forth to decry the barbaric and likely illegal nature of the U.S. drone program. Recently, four of them came together to denounce it more forcefully and provide more disturbing information. They also wrote a letter to Obama.

The Intercept published a powerful story on them the other day, here are a few excerpts:

U.S. DRONE OPERATORS are inflicting heavy civilian casualties and have developed an institutional culture callous to the death of children and other innocents, four former operators said at a press briefing today in New York.

In addition to Haas, the operators are former Air Force Staff Sgt. Brandon Bryant along with former senior airmen Cian Westmoreland and Stephen Lewis. The men have conducted kill missions in many of the major theaters of the post-9/11 war on terror, including Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“We have seen the abuse firsthand,” said Bryant, “and we are horrified.”

Recall Bryant was the guy who quit after a supervisor tried to tell him a little kid they killed was just a dog.

The operators said that they felt increasing urgency to speak out in the wake of the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris last week; they believe drone assassinations have fed the rise of the extremist group the Islamic State, which has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

In their open letter to Obama, the former drone pilots made a similar point, writing that during their service they “came to the realization that the innocent civilians we were killing only fueled the feelings of hatred that ignited terrorism and groups like ISIS,” going on to describe the program as “one of the most devastating driving forces for terrorism and destabilization around the world.”

Read the full letter the drone whistleblowers sent to Obama here.

RM, Those  "even more psychotic psychopaths" believe themselves to be safe from prosecution.

First just who will admit that he is a child killer?

And just who is going to believe a bunch of admitted child killers anyway?

These whiistleblowers are just as complicit in child killing as their bosses.

And they are not heroic at all. They are just bragging about it...under the pretense of doing that which is right.

They are feigning remorse as...they are psychopaths. They would not have taken the job in the first place if they were not..

You are quite correct, RM, that they are also psychotically psychopathic.

They are not heroes or exonerated because of their whistleblowing.

They are still monsters...the identified monster.

As to the unidentified monsters...

Jeezus, you people are fucking beyond stupid.

Do you not understand that people die in wars?  A few billion muzzies want you dead.  Luckily, FOR NOW they only have the capability of infiltrating a few commandos with AKs and bomb vests -- not much of a threat.

Your job is to make sure they remain weak and far away.  A few hellfires a year is a small price to pay.  Yes, women and children die in wars.  Always have, always will. That is why you don't bring them to the battle field.

The fact that the pilots needed to self medicate proves they were not psychopaths.  A psychopath would kill with no emotions of any kind.  What ever you've been taking has fried any possibility of logical thought process.

You heard it on Fox or some blowhard mouthpiece for the Zion outfit on the beach, and therefore you sir must be right, I am a bumbling fuck who never understood the theory, (yes they teach this in the Army War College), it's called the just war theory.

Maybe when you want to act like a broken empire that has spent the wealth of at least the next two generations, with no hope of ever repaying it, you just go fuck with people in hopes of keeping a few tens of million employed in a war machine that really has no business even existing in 'Christian' nation.

I'm not thinking Jesus was ever thinking about how he would bomb anybody in sight just because he was bored.

Tom - The story is about a guy who quit in disgust and was a whistleblower. Everybody is beyond redemption to you? Doesnt sound very Christ like. What I want most is for us as a nation to change course. The meaning of the word repentence. I am no holy roller my shit stinks sometimes too. But if the world just wrote me off before I started looking in the mirror and changing it would not be worth staying alive at all.

Radical M, I recall reading a story a year or two ago (ZH I think) about a female drone operator that was very gung-ho about killing from her comfy bunker. The best part was she was about 6 months pregnant at the time.

Does anyone else recall this?

No, Irish Yoga, I do not remember reading such a story on Zero Hedge.

I once watched a movie, briefly available on YouTube, whose story line revolved around people working inside of a drone command center, reaching crises of conscience regarding carrying out their orders. It was a relatively good dramatization of the whistleblowers' story.

Media is used to create perceptions in the false notion of perception = reality. Also take a look on what is presented on TV Programming. "They" are using the Monkey see Monkey do tactic in their brain washing. Show how people react to situations on TV, then in the real world people think, "oh I saw this person react to this on TV this way, so I must react that way too". Truly sinister and evil.

You forget the most imprortant part which nobody is takin about.

Those drone pilots are the same ones who fly the drones over America.

50000 in total.

Now you tell me how you see the difference between a Fun size terrorist and a fun size American from an altitude of 3 miles on a blurry black and white screen.

Americans should realize that their killers are flying those robots.

And those who make fun about it? You support the killing of American children. Let's see when it's you kids or kids in your family who catch the bullets.

And if nobody protest in America about these killing by drone pilots, they all agree with the killing of their family by the same drones.

Unfortunately most Americans are to dumb to realize it and will only react when their kids are shot down.

And my answer when that will happen? Who cares! You fucking supported it when it was other children who got shot! Be a patriot and make jokes when you burry your own kids!!

I was on the road with a 23 year old kid today, fresh out of school.

I'm so amazed about the total lack of global insight or even knowledge, he didn't even know what was happening in Brussels and believe me, Belgium isn't a large country. Doesn't watch the news, doesn't watch television and only uses the internet to download movies and music and follow soccer.

He had a bachelor in engineering and next to that, the kid was just stupid.

We used to speak 3 to 4 languages when we left school, he hardly spoke english and almost no french. His answer? I don't want to work there and I only want to do business with flemish people. Travel ambitions? Thailand and the party cities in greece and spain.

I don't think that every kid is like that but my god... I didn't want to talk to him anymore, it really felt like an effort for me.

Today, there was decided that the mileniums will have to work untill they're 77 years old before they retire.

When I asked him about it, he didn't care.

Now as a student, I was a protesting kind of person. I knew a lot of students like that. I was wrong sometimes yes, but when I didn't agree I protested. Now as I'm older I only protest by preparing and taking advantege of the situation, good or bad, that's my decision.

But he just did't care. He didn't know anybody of his age who cared.

He had just spend his salary on a pair of 1900 euro's shoes... a guy... that's his month salary...

He didn't have a car... that didn't matter for him...

It was pretty weird to me, maybe it's the first sign that I'm getting older :) but I like to think 39 is still young :)

But most things I know and can do, I didn't learn this at school! Selfeducation, reading and trying out by doing.

So to blame it on education alone...

Nehe! I don't buy that.

We didn't get everything from school either! I was a computer wizard, I knew a shitload more then my own teachers! I used to take over the lessons from my teacher and explain things to the class while my teacher was taking notes!

Education is a small lader, it helps you to be interested but it won't give you a free pass. At all!!!

Boy, all the protesting in the past really, really helped.  As soon as white middle aged boys no longer were at risk of dying is some godforsaken rice paddy halfway around the world, what did they do?  Did they continue to "fight the man?"  No, they became the man.  I love how the older generation refers to ours as "programmed" and "uncaring".  From the same people who claim they "bought in" to the system instead clearly "selling out." It's always difficult to hold my tongue and stop myself smacking them around until they cry.

That's why I can't sit idly by and watch as my generation is basically doing the Grumpy Old Man SNL sketch with regards to the next generation of "dimwits who are going to destroy everything."  Newsflash!  We've already destroyed 95% of sh*t and they don't have much left to break...

If the previous generation wants to continue thinking that the next generation are lazy buffoons, all I have to say to that is we learned from the best.  It's funny how they say that they were never given aything, and how "hard" they had it compared to us.  To paraphrase a Yale professor, the telescopes of Planet Yuppie don't reach Planet Earth.

This generation is indifferent because we know of what went on in the past and realized the futility of resistance.  I was at Seattle in '97 as well as FTAA in Quebec City.  Even if FTAA was "killed", much of the content was still implemented ANYWAYS over the next decade in piecemeal fashion.  The same will happen should pigs fly and TPP fails.  Knowlege isn't power.  Knowing all that's wrong with the world is just going to make you miserable, so from a mental health perspective, the wise thing to do is simply not pay attention because the other path is just frustration and misery.  There are just way too many people with vested interests in the system to allow for any meaningful and required reform.  And I'm not speaking of "welfare queens", either.  Doctors, lawyers, just about 100% of academia and most "professionals" are the biggest welfare queens imaginable.  But that's another rant.

The only thing to do is get away from large urban areas and learn the freedom that comes from going without.  Your health will thank you.  The planet will thank you and it will be fun watching things when the next inevitable crisis comes along.  Even if the crisis doesnt show up in my lifetime, I can at least look at myself in the mirror each day.

Even though I understand your summation that the best alternative is removing yourself to watch from the rural sidelines, I don't agree. There's no safe place anymore. And I'm talking more mentally and spiritually then anything else. It's pretty much Donne's ..for whom the bell tolls...

I sometimes drink to blot it out so I get it. But it is good your here as obviously you are interested in learning what you can about hedging. Living in a rural community does help, less polic state and the views are better.

Social mobility is definately at a low so I do understand some of the lack of motivation as you mention. Its a big evolutionary wall to climb. A popular poster I used to have on my wall when younger:

"The lion wakes up and knows it must faster than the slowest Gazelle or it will starve. The Gazelle wakes up and knows it must run faster than the slowest lion or it will be eaten. Whether your a lion or gazelle when you wake up you better be running."

Exactly.  This whole thing started, when we set out to "get" Bin Laden in Afghanistan.  He's long dead, and we are still killing people all over the place.  Kill a man's wife and kids and he suddenly will have an axe to grind.  We have no fucking business in Syria, Assad isn't our "problem".  Why aren't our military families calling for their sons and daughters to be brought home??  This will go on forever, at least until the nukes fly.  McCain was wrong, it won't be the 100 year war, it will be the endless war.  Bin Laden won, he got EXACTLY what he wanted.

There is  no reason not to support the many who serve honorably even though they are also tools. You can show respect to those who serve and still try to get them to leave the services. Throw epithets at the ones responsible for misusing our treasured youth.

Withdraw your support. Withdraw your consent by not voting. Withdraw your support by limiting your contribution to the machine.

In 1946 George Kennan from the US State Department outlined the broad strokes of US "interests" moving forward with Europe and Asia in shambles, they recognized there was a unique opportunity to economically dominate the world. The globe was sectioned up into areas of service to US corporate interests and function with the MIC as military oversight.  The Middle East was already seen by then as the region of critical importance and with the US not in clear control of the region the US State Department looked to keep the region in perpetual instability with the use of installed proxy gov't.  Iran 1950's is a great example and the subsequent recapture of Iran by Islamic extremists has given birth to the modern US approach to the Middle East.

No, it's reality of all conflict. Anyone who believes otherwise is naive beyond belief.

That includes civil fighting as well. A mugger isn't there to have a fair fight with you, he has overwhelming superiorty, or he wouldn't be there. You think the fighting you see on UFC (for example) in any way represents any form of reality? No. Fairness only matters in sport. i.e. Entertainment.

The reality of attempting to apply sporting principles to real fighting will leave you lying in a pool of your own blood wondering why all your sport training was no use as you bleed out.

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=caf_1425147486

Drones are the ideal form of warfare. Lightning bolts from the gods. The point about drones is not fairness, it is what kind of god are you going to be? One that kills children?

Who can forget the image of a rock-throwing Palestinian child and an armed Israeli Defense Force soldier facing him down with his weapon? And the rhetoric of rabbis urging “the defense” forces to bash these children to death?

Tuesday, Nov 24, 2015, on Salon:: “Amplify your voice for justice”: Roger Waters and prominent artists call for boycott of Israel in new video

“The video, released by Adalah-N.Y.: The New York Campaign for the Boycott of Israel, features influential New York City-based artists calling on other cultural workers to pledge their support for the boycott of Israel, in protest of the country’s illegal 48-year occupation of the Palestinian territories and constant human rights abuses against indigenous Palestinians.

“How can I play in Israel knowing that the government will use my show to whitewash its crimes?” inquires musician Kyp Malone, of the band TV on the Radio…”

Are Drone killings any different than say the massacre of Fallujah or My Lai by military soldiers? Killing is killing Mike. If you are attacked and have to kill, that's one thing. But it's entirely different if your the attacker then say you are defending yourself from those your attacking trying to defend themselves? That is what the USA has been saying these last 66 years of my lifetime.

It wasn't in the book either.  When Ender found out it was for real he had a breakdown, dropped out and became "Speaker for the Dead."  The author said he only wrote Ender's Game so he write the later books in the series.
