The True Meaning Of Thanksgiving

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Richard Ebeiling via EpicTimes.com,

This time of the year, whether in good economic times or bad, is when Americans gather with their families and friends and enjoy a Thanksgiving meal together. It marks a remembrance of those early Pilgrim Fathers who crossed the uncharted ocean from Europe to make a new start in Plymouth, Massachusetts. What is less appreciated is that Thanksgiving also is a celebration of the birth of free enterprise in America.

The English Puritans, who left Great Britain and sailed across the Atlantic on the Mayflower in 1620, were not only escaping from religious persecution in their homeland. They also wanted to turn their back on what they viewed as the materialistic and greedy corruption of the Old World.

Plymouth Colony Planned as Collectivist Utopia

In the New World, they wanted to erect a New Jerusalem that would not only be religiously devout, but be built on a new foundation of communal sharing and social altruism. Their goal was the communism of Plato’s “Republic,” in which all would work and share in common, knowing neither private property nor self-interested acquisitiveness.

What resulted is recorded in the diary of Governor William Bradford, the head of the colony. The colonists collectively cleared and worked the land, but they brought forth neither the bountiful harvest they hoped for, nor did it create a spirit of shared and cheerful brotherhood.

The less industrious members of the colony came late to their work in the fields, and were slow and easy in their labors. Knowing that they and their families were to receive an equal share of whatever the group produced, they saw little reason to be more diligent in their efforts. The harder working among the colonists became resentful that their efforts would be redistributed to the more malingering members of the colony. Soon they, too, were coming late to work and were less energetic in the fields.

Collective Work Equaled Individual Resentment

As Governor Bradford of the Plymouth Colony explained in his old English (though with the spelling modernized):

“For the young men that were able and fit for labor and service did repine that they should spend their time and strength to work for other men’s wives and children, without recompense. The strong, or men of parts, had no more division of food, clothes, etc. then he that was weak and not able to do a quarter the other could; this was thought injustice. The aged and graver men to be ranked and equalized in labor, and food, clothes, etc. with the meaner and younger sort, thought it some indignant and disrespect unto them. And for men’s wives to be commanded to do service for other men, as dressing their meat, washing their clothes, etc. they deemed it a kind of slavery, neither could husbands brook it.”

Because of the disincentives and resentments that spread among the population, crops were sparse and the rationed equal shares from the collective harvest were not enough to ward off starvation and death. Two years of communism in practice had left alive only a fraction of the original number of the Plymouth colonists.

Private Property as Incentive to Industry

Realizing that another season like those that had just passed would mean the extinction of the entire community, the elders of the colony decided to try something radically different: the introduction of private property rights and the right of the individual families to keep the fruits of their own labor.

As Governor Bradford put it:

“And so assigned to every family a parcel of land, according to the proportion of their number for that end . . . This had a very good success; for it made all hands very industrious, so as much more corn was planted then otherwise would have been by any means the Governor or any other could use, and saved him a great deal of trouble, and gave far better content. The women now went willingly into the field, and took their little-ones with them to set corn, which before would a ledge weakness, and inability; whom to have compelled would have been thought great tyranny and oppression.”

The Plymouth Colony experienced a great bounty of food. Private ownership meant that there was now a close link between work and reward. Industry became the order of the day as the men and women in each family went to the fields on their separate private farms. When the harvest time came, not only did many families produce enough for their own needs, but also they had surpluses that they could freely exchange with their neighbors for mutual benefit and improvement.

In Governor Bradford’s words:

“By this time harvest was come, and instead of famine, now God gave them plenty, and the face of things was changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many, for which they blessed God. And the effect of their planting was well seen, for all had, one way or other, pretty well to bring the year about, and some of the abler sort and more industrious had to spare, and sell to others, so as any general want or famine hath not been amongst them since to this day.”

Rejecting Collectivism for Individualism

Hard experience had taught the Plymouth colonists the fallacy and error in the ideas that since the time of the ancient Greeks had promised paradise through collectivism rather than individualism. As Governor Bradford expressed it:

“The experience that was had in this common course and condition, tried sundry years, and that amongst the Godly and sober men, may well convince of the vanity and conceit of Plato’s and other ancients; — that the taking away of property, and bringing into a common wealth, would make them happy and flourishing; as if they were wiser than God. For this community (so far as it was) was found to breed confusion and discontent, and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort.”

Was this realization that communism was incompatible with human nature and the prosperity of humanity to be despaired or be a cause for guilt? Not in Governor Bradford’s eyes. It was simply a matter of accepting that altruism and collectivism were inconsistent with the nature of man, and that human institutions should reflect the reality of man’s nature if he is to prosper. Said Governor Bradford:

“Let none object this is man’s corruption, and nothing to the curse itself. I answer, seeing all men have this corruption in them, God in his wisdom saw another course fitter for them.”

The desire to “spread the wealth” and for government to plan and regulate people’s lives is as old as the utopian fantasy in Plato’s “Republic.” The Pilgrim Fathers tried and soon realized its bankruptcy and failure as a way for men to live together in society.

They, instead, accepted man as he is: hardworking, productive, and innovative when allowed the liberty to follow his own interests in improving his own circumstances and that of his family. And even more, out of his industry result the quantities of useful goods that enable men to trade to their mutual benefit.

Giving Thanks for the Triumph of Freedom

In the wilderness of the New World, the Plymouth Pilgrims had progressed from the false dream of communism to the sound realism of capitalism. At a time of economic uncertainty and growing political paternalism, it is worthwhile recalling this beginning of the American experiment and experience with freedom.

This is the lesson of the First Thanksgiving. This year, when we, Americans sit around our dining table with family and friends, we should also remember that what we are really celebrating is the birth of free men and free enterprise in that New World of America.

The true meaning of Thanksgiving, in other words, is the triumph of Capitalism over the failure of Collectivism in all its forms.

BLOTTO: What is the true meaning of anything on this planet?

How about this:

Article: The English Puritans, who left Great Britain and sailed across the Atlantic on the Mayflower in 1620, were not only escaping from religious persecution in their homeland. They also wanted to turn their back on what they viewed as the materialistic and greedy corruption of the Old World.

Two years of communism in practice had left alive only a fraction of the original number of the Plymouth colonists. Plymouth Pilgrims had progressed from the false dream of communism to the sound realism of capitalism… it is worthwhile recalling this beginning of the American experiment and experience with freedom.

Now, another shot at the Pilgrims, by someone that knows her history:

Mr. Gutzon Borglum said: "Puritanism has made us self-centered and hypocritical for so long, that sincerity and reverence for what is natural in our impulses have been fairly bred out of us, with the result that there can be neither truth nor individualality in our art."

Puritanism celebrated its reign of terror in England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, destroying and crushing every manifestation of art and culture.

Fleeing from persecution and oppression, the Pilgrims of Mayflower fame established in the New World a reign of Puritanic tyranny and crime. The history of New England, and especially of Massachusetts, is full of the horrors that have turned life into gloom, joy and despair, naturalness into disease, honesty and truth into hideous lies and hypocrisies.

Boston, the city of culture, has gone down in the annals of Puritanism as the "Bloody Town." It rivaled Salem, even, in her cruel persecution of unauthorized religious opinions. On the now famous Common a half-naked woman, with a baby in her arms, was publicly whipped for the crime of free speech; and on the same spot Mary Dyer, another Quaker woman, was hanged in 1659. In fact, Boston has been the scene of more than one wanton crime committed by Puritanism. Salem, in the summer of 1692, killed eighteen people for witchcraft.

The point of the article was not to laud all the values of the Puritan's, in fact, those values that did not work were discarded like communism.

Their religious inspired rule was nothing but vigilantism, there was no justification or order to do it from the bible, it give them authority to do such things like the Quran does, but they went ahead and assumed the authority of god.  Like their early attempt at communism this too was abandoned fortunately, bad ideas have a way of failing.

Paraphrasing Joan Robinson, that I found to be very telling:

Two menaces hang over the world today…. The raise of populations ahead of economic development and the American crusade against communism… that prevents others systems from setting into peaceful co-existence and using its resources to meet its population needs.

"...but I reallywouldn’t have wanted to have been ruled by the Puritan elders and churchmen."

I'm pretty sure they all voluntarily got on the ship and I'm damned sure they were actually fleeing the religious persecution of the Church of England, a state sanctioned religion which started as nothing more than Henry VIII (a king ie...a monarch=government) wanting a divorce from Catherine.

I have always found it amusing AND informative that atheists and Marxists are the very first ones to denigrate those who "collectively" made a decision to peacefully separate themselves from the imposed uniformity of a state sponsored religion when it is they themselves who "preach it" everyday ;-)

Are you talking about ISIS or the puritans?

Either way, neither one is peaceful because religion are the highest form of bigotry and manipulation through mind control and obedience. Don’t question authority. Don’t think for yourself.

So, because of this brainwashing, most of these followers are totally unprepared, and ignorant of facts and realities. Most cant’ hear the words “we live in a finite planet” because that goes against their religion—irrational—believes.

And indians didn't really give a damn about how many "finite" buffalo they stampeded over a cliff just as long as there was enough of them killed to feed the tribe on, the rest were left to rot.

So because of the brainwashing you've endured (and somehow still promote) you're beginning to understand everything you've ever been taught is a lie or as Dilma Rouseff might say, "I deserve the largest teepee because I have the very best of intentions!" ;-)

Classical conservative (private power. Top-down management): The modern capitalist system.

Classical liberal (Bolshevism): Restrict form of state intervention. Chris Hedges is a classical liberal.

State Capitalist: Private tyrannies protect by US military and subsidized by the states.

State Socialism: Everyone living a dream, of course, some more than others. Backed by World Reserve Currency and now Petrodollar.

Or,

American Libertarian (Ayn Rand): Leave the command of production to the owners—elites.

Libertarian Socialist: Abolish government and private ownership. Chomsky is a libertarian socialist.

For four years now I have raised a thanksgiving turkey for several people locally. All are struggling in our new economy and are having trouble finding anything but occasional work. If they help in the butchering, they are welcome to a turkey. One has 4 children and this means a great thanksgiving with extra meals. I have heard of others raising home grown turkeys for others at $100/ bird and every year Mr Miffed tabulates my costs and thanks to non existent inflation, I see why they charge such a price. Still, I am undeterred.

No money ever exchanges hands and all agreements are made with a nod and handshake. We like it that way. We gut, scald and plug together and afterward drink beer, tell stories, laugh and pray for better days. I know if I ever were to have need, they would be there as I would never fail them.

I am not sure how to define this relationship. In a sense, it is communistic in that we are sharing our labors and resources. Perhaps it is the willingness on all sides to participate in the task is what makes the difference. Certainly different from ones wages being taxed without any recourse on how they are spent.

Happy Thanksgiving to all and may you cherish those who you love. This time of year is a sad one for those of us in healthcare because the stress of the holidays can take its toll on many. Many suicide attempts and overdoses. I have already seen some tragic cases.

Keep love and light in your hearts and stay safe.

Miffed, the type of economy you practice has best been described in "Debt: THe First 5000 Years" http://www.amazon.com/Debt-Updated-Expanded-First-Years/dp/1612194192/re...

It is described as a human economy. It is still practiced in many remote locations and the dominant economy in small communities and clans. I have several friends with whom I keep similar arrengements. I get my water from a friend's well, no questions asked, no money exchanged. I helped another to setup his wind/solar station to power his RV. He in turn, stopped by my cabin and helped me raise the walls. I have multiple examples of the same. Clan or humad economies are ideal with people you trust. Currency is what you exchange with strangers, favors are exchanged with friends.

It saddens me in our nation there is so much polarization between races, sexes, religion and politics. Funny how just processing those turkeys seems to put those things aside for awhile and we become just human beings helping one another without agendas, political correctness or interference from the government. True freedom. We are so technically connected today yet never so far apart.

Nowhere.  Capitalism depends upon a moral populace and the rule of law, two things that are dying on the vine.  Corruption rules the day, and no 'ism works under that.

America's future is not to be found in central planning of the economy; America's future productivity depends upon the individual, as is made clear in this story of the First Thanksgiving.

Robert G. Anderson in his article “The Assault on Capital” 25 years ago showed how peace and prosperity in the United States had been threatened for 50 years by the political processes of inflation, taxation, transfer policies and direct controls.

“Of all these actions,” Anderson wrote, “nothing inflicts more damage on productive effort, saving, and capital accumulation than a policy of monetary inflation…

“The disruption of the price system through inflation generates awesome losses of capital.  Both consumers and producers are led into economic chaos. The false signals of inflated prices alter the allocation of economic resources in production and encourage artificial levels of consumption. The ultimate result is a general impoverishment, as capital is taxed and destroyed.”

The period following the end of the Civil War in 1865 until the beginning of World War I led to in the United States to the greatest expansion of economic activity and an accumulation of capital unmatched in human history – because of the degree of individual freedom.

Anderson makes the point “that this entire transformation of society was made possible only because individuals possessed economic freedom and were able to freely accumulate and employ the needed capital to compete against existing industry…”

But, then, “powerful political forces assaulted, directly and indirectly, both individual freedom and private property in an attempt to ‘preserve’ the status quo. Disguised as ‘progressive programs’ to benefit ‘the people,’ political intervention is consuming the wealth of the citizenry and hampering the incentive to replace it…generating a burden that is destroying the material welfare of society.”

The current system’s failure, which is bound to come, will turn the people back toward the one thing that Governor Bradford demonstrated and that future government was and now fails to provide – the protection of private property.  For it is private property which provides the mechanism for individuals to increase their production and it is this consistent increase in production that grows the economy. Private property allows for citizens to accumulate capital and make investments.

“Production and saving rather than consuming will occur only if there exists an incentive to do so. Production and saving requires the personal sacrifice of not consuming. Only when the potential for greater future consumption can clearly be seen from saving and working today, will individuals willingly produce and save.”

America's First Thanksgiving Proclamation - 1789

As President, on October 3, 1789, George Washington made the following proclamation and created the first Thanksgiving Day designated by the federal government of the United States of America:

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor-- and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be-- That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks--for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation--for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war--for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed--for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted--for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions-- to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually--to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed--to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord--To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us--and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

Forts had to be built!! Not to keep the Natives out, but to keep the settlers in!!!

Many present day ZioNazi ameriklans proudly trace their (pretend) ancestry back to these lovers of freedom, these brave pioneers, these champions of religious freedom.

Unfortunately, like almost everything we have been systematically programmed to believe about the USSA and its history, it just ain't true.

The Mayflower was far from being the first ship to carry European colonists to what would become the U.S. Prior to the Mayflower's voyage, there were numerous attempts to colonize North America by Europeans, including at least nine by the British, five of which were successful, and many others by the French and Spanish and possibly some by Scandinavians.

"The true meaning of Thanksgiving, in other words, is the triumph of Capitalism over the failure of Collectivism in all its forms."

And now, after almost 400 years, and the continuous deceit, betrayal, erosion, corruption, persecution, suppression, repression, subjugation and confiscation of coercive collectivism under the liberal progressive socialists, the USA has returned to coercive collectivism that is even more coercive and punitive than it was in New Plymouth, because in that era, if you did not like the Puritans, all you had to do was pack up and move west to land beyond their control.

Where can you go in this era to find a place where you can live free, unencumbered, uncontrolled, unsubjugated ?

Today, you cannot even renounce your USA citizenship - you must make a request, in a HUGE application, pay a fee for its processing AND you must pay a "departure tax" and you must continue reporting income to the IRS, AND continue paying income tax AFTER you have "renounced" - the regime owns not just your income, BUT YOU.

It happens over and over and over, since the beginning of recorded history. They still come along, and think it will be differant this time. Ah, well...
Life is too short. Let's be happy for abundant gmo food, cheap plentiful energy, cars with air conditioning, the Internet, cable tv and porn, the NFL and NASCAR.

True. I can just imagine only a few workers in the fields back then with the others being sold futures contracts. Then the harvest time comes, only to find out the true farmers figured it would be cheaper and more profitable to simply buy a futures contract, sit back. And relax like the others. In the end, none would have done any work, expecting huge profits on their futures. No one could take delivery because there was no produce, just pieces of paper traded around. So they starved.

There is no true meaning of Thanksgiving left, as the history is clouded and the interpreters, whether it be you or me, have no standing.

There is no triumph of capitalism any more than there is a failure of collectivism.

The true failure is the unchecked path towards fascism, because everyone is arguing about what freedom means.

Central characteristics of capitalism include private property, capital accumulation, wage labor, and competitive markets.

It is typical of all of cartoonish articles such as this one to omit that third pillar of capitalism: wage labor

I guess it doesn't fit well into the narrative, since wage labor by definition means that you are working for someone else's profit.

Passive aggression is an aberrant behavior.  We are where we are due to passive aggression that has gone unrecognized for a century.  Extended hand to shake and a knife held behind the back is a blanket description of passive aggression.  This is a tool used to get along in the world for the misfits.  And make no mistake, the misfits are not us.  This is a learned behavior passed down from generation.  I recognize it as mother was raised in a catholic institution, and they employed these methods for fast results.  No love was ever lost.  Orphanages were a business.  Medicating inmates without their knowledge.  Punishing them with solitary confinement, public humliation, lack of primacy during toiletry, and most of all with FOOD.

I have never typed or spoke the word chosen by hateful people to describe the African americans.  But I will say that a religious cult has the whole fucking world BY THE BALLS and they are more often than Jewish.

The plans are in books, discussed in videotapped and recorded conversations by the most respected rabbis and scholars.  They have been chosen to lead because we are too stupid.  But we had to build the infrastructure first.  Then, they take it and shove us off the cliff.

We are on a train to the Cassandra Crossing.  You understand that don't you?  It is intentional and it is being done in such a fashion that the misery will be more dramatic that would otherwise be necessary in a people bubble.  This is genocide.  Anyone not fighting for their life right now sentencing their children to tax slave status to bankers primarily jews and contempt-laced pus is exuding from the fine print when reference is made ot the middle class.

Consumption was 24/7, buy EZ credit, liar loans predatory lending.  Genocide comes in many forms.

Fuck the jews.  Silent approval of this nasty savage-like plan?  Fuck no.  Dancing.

Never take sides against the fucking family.

People need to say shit like that, and more often, precisely because it does help humanity.  If we concede the battle over freedom of speech and thought, then there is no way to win the war.  The very reason we have so many niggers of all colors with the rise of the idiocrisy is because our predecessors forsook natural law and freedom and sacrificed the citizenry and future of humanity at the altar of State salvation.  The State cannot provide security or education... much less freedom, yet it is quite capable and has a proven record of usurping them.  Despite this, the untermenschen still worship at its altar, first for common defense, then lifting the downtrodden, then feeding the fat, then adding credit financed gilding to the prison, and now shielding the brainwashed "minds" with paper legislation and regulation that purports to exceed the signal attenuation characteristics of lead (never mind tinfoil).

J’aimais l’auteur du livre De l’Esprit. The toil of the working and middle classes supports the upper, Leisure class.

We still have our aristocracy in the UK.

You are just forming your aristocracy in the US.

It is not about hard work but inherited wealth and privilege.

Adam Smith:

“The Labour and time of the poor is in civilised countries sacrificed to the maintaining of the rich in ease and luxury. The Landlord is maintained in idleness and luxury by the labour of his tenants. The moneyed man is supported by his extractions from the industrious merchant and the needy who are obliged to support him in ease by a return for the use of his money. But every savage has the full fruits of his own labours; there are no landlords, no usurers and no tax gatherers.”

Never let facts get in the way of a good narrative.  The Pilgrims were never communist.  They were shareholders in the joint project.  They did not starve to death because of communism.  They died from disease and cold.  Much of the problem concerning food stems from their staggering ineptitude and lack of preparation.  They basically had no clue how to survive in the new world and came there woefully unprepared.  They went hungry in a land of bounty because they refused to eat local game and plants.

The organisation of the Mayflower Compact was commercial, not communal. They decided to organize in this manner to increase the overall profits of the entire enterprise and repay their debts faster, not in the name of some bizarre homage to Plato or the Bible.

If the Mayflower Compact failed, so be it.  But to call it communism is akin to calling any modern corporation communist since workers and investors band together to maximize profits.

But, please, carry on.  This sorry retelling of history pops up from time to time.  Its relevance to Obama and modern America is less than tenuous.

So, basically, your response is "neener, neener, you suck"?

Surely you can do better since you apparently know history.  Can you please reread the terms of the Mayflower Compact and explain to me the nature of the agreement by which the brethren organized themselves.  And you might also take some spelling lessons.  Or would being correct get in the way of your being "right"?

The Mayflower Compact was based simultaneously upon a majoritarian model (taking into account that women and children could not vote) and the settlers' allegiance to the king. It was in essence a social contract in which the settlers consented to follow the compact's rules and regulations for the sake of order

so take your bullshit somewhere else fella...majority rule, social contract = communism

you cant understand the meaning, so critical thinking is out the window for you, amoeba

Gov.Brandford's observations have been printed more often the last few years. Every person with capitalism running in their veins has read it and sees similarities to the past and present. He may not even have written it...perhaps it was written during the cold war as propaganda to fight the communist hordes? I only first read it after the 2007 election.  Has ayone seen the original print in Bradford's own  hand writing?

That aside, I'd like to use it compare to today. Today the UN has an agenda to reduce the world's population, to reduce carbon emissions, to reduce sovereign nation's abilties to rule themselves. There is talk of meat taxes to reduce carbon emissions. There is talk of carbon taxes, to redistribute the world's wealth. Ah yes...there's that term from Bradford's day, "Redistribute the wealth"

Years ago Stalin had a similar plan to "redistribute wealth" by taking state control of food production. It was actually a plan to depopulate the farmers who owned the  land, and it worked. Ask how many died of starvation in the Ukraine. The state farms never did produce enough to feed the masses and imports from capitalist countries were needed. Dictatorships always needed to get rid of private farmers. Individualism from farmers, was a bad example to the rest of the nation. Farmers had to be removed.

So now we have Agenda 21, a UN platform to control governments with an elite, "top down" governing approach. Is carbon reduction at the coming Paris meetings about reducing carbon or reducing capitalism? Is it a planned way to tax the world's farmers into submission? Is it indirectly a way to de-populate the world?

The original manuscript is at the Massachussets statehouse on deposit at the library there.

Doubtless it will be burned as Bradfords observations depart ever more widely from those of his heirs.

No, the colonists were not communist, as Marx would not be alive for another two centuries.

They were, as the article correctly states, COLLECTIVIST along the lines of Plato's "Republic".

Of course, to be fair, all the ideological descendants of Plato's Republic, including both Communism and Socialism have a great deal in common.

Also his earlier descendant "SERFDOM"...  Whose main difference is that it does not assert that both those who create material property and those who are privileged to be able to redistribute it at will...Including to themselves....are equal.

Only a blind idiot would think both he and the Commisar that ruled him were equal in any real sense.

I never said the "colonists were communists". I hate when people change the wording of my comments.

My comment was made to compare the inept food redistribution of Bradford's colony, to future food shortages caused by the destruction of property rights of farmers.

Bradford learned from their new world mistake...And the UN is using the history of collectivism   to further their goals of new world government.

"The True Meaning Of Thanksgiving" you mean the real "true meaning" or some shitty platitude foisted on the sheeple?

Imagine if Germans were to eat pig every year and celebrate Auschwitz Day...that is the true meaning of "Thanksgiving" where the genocide of the Native Peoples is NEVER EVER mentioned as the spawn of murderous colonial intruders celebrate the genocide perpetrated by the first Britlander trash on the continent.

All I know is when I went shopping to purchase the food for my family contribution to the great feast, there were 2 other people in front of me using their EBT cards to celibrate THEIR Thangsgiving spending my tax "payment" so they could particpate in the great gorging.  So the government is now the substitute for whatever was a ruling council back in olden times but the "progress" they have since accomplished is simply a regression into a proven failed utopian dream that itself will fail again.

It seems to me that Thanksgiving has mutated into a kind of a give-thanks-to-your-government holiday.

The only meaning national holidays have to me is time off to be with family.

"Industry became the order of the day as the men and women in each family went to the fields on their separate private farms."

How about that, slave-owners and land-stealers are examples of industry and working in the fields! Who knew? I guess ZH knows.

In fact, they owned no slaves.   That was introduced by the French and Dutch from their Caribbean colonies to the south.

Nor were the native tribes forced from their land.   The native tribes experienced constant warfare amongst themselves.  There were periodic wars also between settlers and natives...but in less proportion.

Instead settlers developed relatively good relations with the surrounding tribes, such that the unattached young men of the settlers, who always outnumbered the women, we're able to bargain for wives with the natives.

Many also settled in the native villages with their native brides.  This was so common, that within a century the identity of the villages as "native" or "settler" became more a matter of convention than cultural identity to such degree that by the 1740's it was common for villagers to have native first names and English surnames.

The tribes, who did not share a uniform language, also began to increasingly use English, as from common heritage, it was understood by most...  So it became a cause for concern as the tribal elders passed away, that their grandchildren did not actively maintain their language or separate tribal identities.

The real "Last of the Mohicans" did not die battling white invaders.  His name is remembered.  He died in an English bed tended by his English daughters, and was simply the last of the tribe to follow "the old ways".

Ditto to the Algonquin.

The truth you were never told is written indelibly in our mitochondrial DNA.

Yes,  let us gather with the needy hoards who are fighting in line to board container ships and sail west to live in china and N Korea.  Let us all line up in Miami and fight with others to get on shitty rafts and boats and hope to land on the shimmering shores of Cuba.  Lets argue about how many bottles of water we should carry this time of year to flee this fucked up USA and flee to Mexico.  Maybe I will contact relatives that remain in Alberta and start getting pointers on trapping skills as I flee to Canada to leave this shitty country.

You want to rewrite history?  Go ahead.  You dont like this country?  Leave.  Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.  My dad moved here and became a US citizen in 1950.  He raised 7 kids.  i am 60.  i raised three lovely daughters.  In April , God willing,  my 6th grandchild will be born.  i am thankful.  Look around.  If you have a roof over your head and arent out in the weather,  be thankful.  If you can hear the laughter of children, be thankful.  If you have food on grocery store shelves when you go shopping, be thankful.  There are no enemy tanks rolling down our streets,  be thankful.  If you are reading this post,  be thankful,  you are literate.  Do you know how many people on earth can't read?

I am done.  It has been said all of life is attitude.  It has been said 90 percent of life is what happens to and for you and 10 percent how you react to it.  Why don't we react to Thanksgiving,  regardless of origin,  with some thankfulness.  Why not smile?  Lend a hand up?  Be a difference in someones life.  A good buddy of mine who is an electrical lineman just lost sight in his right eye virtually overnight.  He can't work.  It is a union gig.  He was much more thankful last year.  How about it.

If you whine you surround your self with whiners.  I once heard the character you possess is reflected by the type of people you draw into your life.  Lets draw some thankful people in here.  Down arrow away.  You have two eyes you are reading this with.  i am thankful for much.  Good holiday to all.

Hahaha, nice extrapolation of the divide of profits between capital and labour.

In an age of rising inequality all fed on financial delusion and labour manipulation via slave arb outsourcing we now have the 1% ruling the roost on "other people's sweat and credit accounts". Sleep tight the pilgrims of off shored money piles.

Thank you forefathers for having stolen a continent from the indigenous and thank the current generation of Oligarchs for having continued the stealing of Oil and RM all over the world including the labour of the impoverished.

Now you have a beanstalk of capitalism's hi-rise fed on steroids to an extent that even Lance the cyclist would blush all red.

"These guys make moar money in their toxic beds then I did climbing that hill".

"Better dead than red" now reads "better stripped naked and China's indebted slave."

Some thanks can be given to the architects of this infamy on this day I guess.

"A day which will live in infamy"... comes back as boomerang to land of Uncle Sam that now despises the man who said it.
