"The Redcoats Are Coming!" Britain Moves Closer To Launching Anti-ISIS Airstrikes In Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

Now that France has officially joined the party in Syria in an effort to avenge the 130 people who lost their lives in Islamic State’s brazen assault on Paris, the odds of World War III have increased exponentially.

Sure, The Kremlin has for now instructed the military to treat the French as “allies” and for the time being, Moscow’s pilots are writing “For Paris” on bombs, but as Tuesday’s “incident” between Turkish F-16s and a Russian Su-24 makes clear, crowded skies are dangerous skies, especially when there’s a significant amount of ambiguity surrounding what everyone is up to in Syria on a day to day basis.

Now that Russia has deployed the S-400s to Latakia and placed the Moskva guided missile cruiser equipped with S-300-like systems off the coast, anything that even looks like a threat to Russia’s air force will be “destroyed” and that, as WaPo noted on Wednesday, “has the potential to create headaches for Turkish and other aircraft in a U.S.-led coalition that are carrying out a separate airstrike campaign in Syria."

So, to the extent that the Paris attacks served to thaw tensions between Russia and the West, Turkey’s decision to shoot down an Su-24 means it was one step forward and two steps back.

Now, it appears the already crowded playing field is about to get more cramped as David Cameron, following up on comments made during meetings with Francois Hollande, is pushing British lawmakers to approve RAF strikes on ISIS. As Reuters reports, the PM “told lawmakers on Thursday it was time to join air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria, saying Britain cannot ‘subcontract its security to other countries’”.

This is the second time Cameron has sought Parliament’s approval for strikes in Syria. He lost a vote in 2013.

This time around, the stakes are higher and the circumstances have changed. ISIS has proven resilient thanks in no small part to, i) what looks like a deliberate effort on the part of The Pentagon to avoid hitting Islamic State’s oil convoys, ii) the CIA’s continued support for the various rebel groups that have, for the better part of five years, ensured that the country remains completely unstable, and iii) support from Turkey, the Saudis, and Qatar.

"It is wrong for the United Kingdom to expect the aircrews of other nations to carry the burdens and the risks of striking ISIL in Syria to stop terrorism here in Britain," Cameron said.

In a testament to how close Britain is to joining the fray, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn will reportedly not use a party whip to influence MP’s decisions. "In these sort of issues of conscience it is better to allow MPs to make their own minds up," John McDonnell told BBC.

"I don't think this is a country that lets others like the French or the Americans defend our interests and protect us from terrorist organizations - we should contribute to that effort,” Finance minister George Osborne added, underscoring the perception that Britain’s military prowess is but a shadow of what it once was.

Cameron played down the idea that striking ISIS in Raqqa would increase the extent to which the group targets Britain. "He told MPs the UK was already a target for IS - and the only way to deal with that was to 'take action' now," BBC reports, adding that The Foreign Affairs Committee has said they'll be "no military intervention without a "coherent international strategy" on tackling IS and ending Syria's civil war."

Yeah, well good luck on that. There are two "strategies", one pursued by Russia and Iran, and the other by the US, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. Moscow and Tehran will simply destroy anyone and everyone battling the Assad government and that includes ISIS, while the US and its regional allies will continue to fund the FSA and, indirectly al-Qaeda while covertly doing what they can to ensure that strikes against ISIS don't cripple the group's ability to remain operational and effective in Syria and Iraq. France, frankly, is just flying around aimlessly dropping bombs wherever the US tells it to which is precisely what the UK will end up doing should they decide to get involved directly.

The problem here is that France and Britain are just bolt-on air forces. Unless and until the US decides to drop its support for the programs and countries that are arming and financing the FSA, al-Nusra, and ISIS, adding more planes will do nothing to aid in the fight against terror and will only make the airspace more crowded, making it even more difficult for the Russians to determine who is who and which planes represent a threat and which ones don't.

Finally, note that the tensions between Turkey and Russia will make the ongoing discussions in Vienna unbearable for Moscow and Ankara which means that any "progress" on a "political solution" probably crashed and burned with the Su-24 that went down near the Turkish border on Tuesday.

What happens when a NATO aircraft or missile takes down a Turkish plane and blamed on Russia?  It really looks like NATO is trying to drawl Russia into war on a much larger scale; I wonder just how capable the Russian military is and where the hell is China??!!

"Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged breakthroughs in reform of the country's armed forces by 2020, vowing to reorganize the current military administration structure and military command system." - This means they are NOT ready and will not be till at least 2020.  http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2015-11/26/c_134859089.htm

The world is in serious trouble and much more death and destruction awaits all the nations people in the coming weeks, months and years.  Serfdom is no picnic.

I can't help but notice that Russia is the only country Assad asked to defend Syria; the rest invited themselves. That, to me, is the big giveaway that they came not to defend Syria, but to destroy it. This is a classic case of doubletalk. They say one thing and do something entirely opposite.

According to international law, Assad and Putin would be within their rights to ask the NATO gang to leave. They won't. But it would clear the confusion about who is on whose side.

The UK govt are owned by the neocons and do what the neocons tell them *but* so far they haven't been able to get the public to agree.

Don't forget they tried to get parliamnet to agree to this back in 2013 and failed.

Every nation seems to want a piece of Syria because no nation is economically sound.

So when Syria is over whose nation next?

THIS DOES NOT END WITH SYRIA IT CONTINUES OVER AND OVER BECAUSE THE BEAST CAN NEVER BE SATISFIED.

Reckon the US will want to go after Iran next, but after Iran ... who next? The list is endless that even so called puppet states will also feel the brunt of a superpower needing ever more so it can add up economically. This is not about Democracy neither when you see the growing number of failed states being left in the wake of this carnage.

Dear Head of the British Armed Forces.

What legal authority do you have for sending British military units in another country? Do you have explicit approval from the legitimate government of that country? Maybe you have UN Security Council authorisation?

Just curious.

The British still think you can suppress Johnny Towelhead by appearing in a pair of jodhpurs and pith helmet, a la Lord Canaervon/Tutankhamun.

If they are mimiking fight against ISIS, then Russia should just tell them. "Get out of Syria"

I've heard the French flew 19 times just to hit one target.

The UK govt have been europhiles for years and as such have been running down the UK armed forces for years in preparation for an EU army so the air force only has a handful of planes and the military component of this is negligable.

The UK govt are also whores of the neocons and the neocons want UK involvement to use as a tool in the US political debate against the isolationists. That's the important bit.

However they tried before back in 2013 (after the neocons gassed all those people and blamed Assad) but failed to get it through parliament.

(It was the failure of the gas attack to start their new war that led them to use Isis instead.)

They might fail this time too.

One of the ironies of the neocon full spectrum dominance strategy is they want to weaken the western nation states by mass immigration but that immigration is giving muslim voters a alock on the necon attacks on the middle east.

So we'll see.

Throughout his statement to the UK parliament today, the removal of Assad was a recurring concomitant. In other words, fighting ISIS is conditional. In other words, no fucking use - except to the Yanks - whatsoever. Come on, China, show willing.

Remember, Trump said let Putin take care of ISIS, since the US has basically pulled out.  And of course he also said to go after their oil before the Russians did and before Obama was shamed into pretending to do so.

The only presidential candidate to make sense about US involvement in Syria -- and the MSM and establishment claim he lacks experience / knowledge about foreign and military matters, especially compared to the heroine of Benghazi.

It is my opinion that eventually Syria and Russia [and Iran] will have to release a joint announcement something along the following lines:

-----

The Syrian government demands that no aircraft, vehicles, equipment or humans enter Syria without the explicit permission of the Syrian government.  NATO has made clear that their position is the following:  if any aircraft, vehicle, equipment or human enters into the territory of a sovereign nation, even by a mere 1km and for a mere 17 seconds, that aircraft, vehicle, equipment or human should be destroyed.

Given the current situation in Syria, we accept and adopt this position.  As a result, everyone in Syria with permission of the Syrian government, including but not limited to Syrian, Russian and Iranian forces, is authorized and requested to destroy any and every aircraft, vehicle, equipment, human in Syria without explicit permission from the Syrian government.  Since we do not give permission for any military assets to be within Syria except for Russian and Iranian, all military assets from other nations can be destroyed without question until the current invasion has ended and this order has been removed.  Be certain not to destroy any civilian (non-military) assets like commercial flights and road-vehicles (regardless of nationality) before making certain they are unauthorized, and contacting Syrian officials for permission to destroy.

-----

Russia has tried "playing nice" and "being cooperative" for long enough.  Time to put their foot down and say "terrorists are terrorists" and "invasion is invasion", and since the USSA and NATO supply terrorists and invaders in other sovereign lands, all terrorists and invaders, whether mercenary or official national assets, will be destroyed without advanced notice.

It was important for Russia to start out by "playing nice" and "playing cooperative".  But the shoot-down by Turkey not only raises the stakes, but gives Syria and Russia the perfect justification to "stop pussyfooting around" and send the military and proxy terrorists and mercenaries of the USSA and NATO packing.  They asked for it... in spades.

PS:  Before they do this, Syria and Russia needs to meet with individual "leaders" in NATO and EU nations and give them the option to join them in the effort to stop terrorism (all of them) and invasions of sovereign nations by proxy mercenary-terrorists.  Give them one final chance to abandon their suicidal support for the insane neocon plan to destroy the planet.

Great idea, I have long thought the same.  And remember, this week Obummer said any nation has the right to shoot down any planes invading its airspace.  I wonder if those words will come back to bite his ass.
