Dead, White, & Blue - The Great Die-Off Of America's Blue Collar Whites
...in the 2016 campaign season, it couldn’t be clearer that the billionaire version of white privilege is going great guns, but as for working class whites, not so much. As Barbara Ehrenreich, founding editor of the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, notes today, the sense of white privilege has taken a hit in America and that’s not surprising. A recent study she cites suggests that middle-aged whites with no more than a high-school degree now have death rates that, in developed countries, come close only to those last seen among Russian men after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In other words, whole cohorts of white Americans have ever less to cheer about in their lives, which may help explain all those public cheers for Trump et al.

The white working class, which usually inspires liberal concern only for its paradoxical, Republican-leaning voting habits, has recently become newsworthy for something else: according to economist Anne Case and Angus Deaton, the winner of the latest Nobel Prize in economics, its members in the 45- to 54-year-old age group are dying at an immoderate rate. While the lifespan of affluent whites continues to lengthen, the lifespan of poor whites has been shrinking. As a result, in just the last four years, the gap between poor white men and wealthier ones has widened by up to four years. The New York Times summed up the Deaton and Case study with this headline: “Income Gap, Meet the Longevity Gap.”
This was not supposed to happen. For almost a century, the comforting American narrative was that better nutrition and medical care would guarantee longer lives for all. So the great blue-collar die-off has come out of the blue and is, as the Wall Street Journal says, “startling.”
It was especially not supposed to happen to whites who, in relation to people of color, have long had the advantage of higher earnings, better access to health care, safer neighborhoods, and of course freedom from the daily insults and harms inflicted on the darker-skinned. There has also been a major racial gap in longevity -- 5.3 years between white and black men and 3.8 years between white and black women -- though, hardly noticed, it has been narrowing for the last two decades. Only whites, however, are now dying off in unexpectedly large numbers in middle age, their excess deaths accounted for by suicide, alcoholism, and drug (usually opiate) addiction.
There are some practical reasons why whites are likely to be more efficient than blacks at killing themselves. For one thing, they are more likely to be gun-owners, and white men favor gunshots as a means of suicide. For another, doctors, undoubtedly acting in part on stereotypes of non-whites as drug addicts, are more likely to prescribe powerful opiate painkillers to whites than to people of color. (I’ve been offered enough oxycodone prescriptions over the years to stock a small illegal business.)
Manual labor -- from waitressing to construction work -- tends to wear the body down quickly, from knees to back and rotator cuffs, and when Tylenol fails, the doctor may opt for an opiate just to get you through the day.
The Wages of Despair
But something more profound is going on here, too. As New York Times columnist Paul Krugman puts it, the “diseases” leading to excess white working class deaths are those of “despair,” and some of the obvious causes are economic. In the last few decades, things have not been going well for working class people of any color.
I grew up in an America where a man with a strong back -- and better yet, a strong union -- could reasonably expect to support a family on his own without a college degree. In 2015, those jobs are long gone, leaving only the kind of work once relegated to women and people of color available in areas like retail, landscaping, and delivery-truck driving. This means that those in the bottom 20% of white income distribution face material circumstances like those long familiar to poor blacks, including erratic employment and crowded, hazardous living spaces.
White privilege was never, however, simply a matter of economic advantage. As the great African-American scholar W.E.B. Du Bois wrote in 1935, “It must be remembered that the white group of laborers, while they received a low wage, were compensated in part by a sort of public and psychological wage.”
Some of the elements of this invisible wage sound almost quaint today, like Du Bois’s assertion that white working class people were “admitted freely with all classes of white people to public functions, public parks, and the best schools.” Today, there are few public spaces that are not open, at least legally speaking, to blacks, while the “best” schools are reserved for the affluent -- mostly white and Asian American along with a sprinkling of other people of color to provide the fairy dust of “diversity.” While whites have lost ground economically, blacks have made gains, at least in the de jure sense. As a result, the “psychological wage” awarded to white people has been shrinking.
For most of American history, government could be counted on to maintain white power and privilege by enforcing slavery and later segregation. When the federal government finally weighed in on the side of desegregation, working class whites were left to defend their own diminishing privilege by moving rightward toward the likes of Alabama Governor (and later presidential candidate) George Wallace and his many white pseudo-populist successors down to Donald Trump.
At the same time, the day-to-day task of upholding white power devolved from the federal government to the state and then local level, specifically to local police forces, which, as we know, have taken it up with such enthusiasm as to become both a national and international scandal. The Guardian, for instance, now keeps a running tally of the number of Americans (mostly black) killed by cops (as of this moment, 1,209 for 2015), while black protest, in the form of the Black Lives Matter movement and a wave of on-campus demonstrations, has largely recaptured the moral high ground formerly occupied by the civil rights movement.
The culture, too, has been inching bit by bit toward racial equality, if not, in some limited areas, black ascendency. If the stock image of the early twentieth century “Negro” was the minstrel, the role of rural simpleton in popular culture has been taken over in this century by the characters in Duck Dynasty and Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. At least in the entertainment world, working class whites are now regularly portrayed as moronic, while blacks are often hyper-articulate, street-smart, and sometimes as wealthy as Kanye West. It’s not easy to maintain the usual sense of white superiority when parts of the media are squeezing laughs from the contrast between savvy blacks and rural white bumpkins, as in the Tina Fey comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. White, presumably upper-middle class people generally conceive of these characters and plot lines, which, to a child of white working class parents like myself, sting with condescension.
Of course, there was also the election of the first black president. White, native-born Americans began to talk of “taking our country back.” The more affluent ones formed the Tea Party; less affluent ones often contented themselves with affixing Confederate flag decals to their trucks.
On the American Downward Slope
All of this means that the maintenance of white privilege, especially among the least privileged whites, has become more difficult and so, for some, more urgent than ever. Poor whites always had the comfort of knowing that someone was worse off and more despised than they were; racial subjugation was the ground under their feet, the rock they stood upon, even when their own situation was deteriorating.
If the government, especially at the federal level, is no longer as reliable an enforcer of white privilege, then it’s grassroots initiatives by individuals and small groups that are helping to fill the gap -- perpetrating the micro-aggressions that roil college campuses, the racial slurs yelled from pickup trucks, or, at a deadly extreme, the shooting up of a black church renowned for its efforts in the Civil Rights era. Dylann Roof, the Charleston killer who did just that, was a jobless high school dropout and reportedly a heavy user of alcohol and opiates. Even without a death sentence hanging over him, Roof was surely headed toward an early demise.
Acts of racial aggression may provide their white perpetrators with a fleeting sense of triumph, but they also take a special kind of effort. It takes effort, for instance, to target a black runner and swerve over to insult her from your truck; it takes such effort -- and a strong stomach -- to paint a racial slur in excrement on a dormitory bathroom wall. College students may do such things in part out of a sense of economic vulnerability, the knowledge that as soon as school is over their college-debt payments will come due. No matter the effort expended, however, it is especially hard to maintain a feeling of racial superiority while struggling to hold onto one’s own place near the bottom of an undependable economy.
While there is no medical evidence that racism is toxic to those who express it -- after all, generations of wealthy slave owners survived quite nicely -- the combination of downward mobility and racial resentment may be a potent invitation to the kind of despair that leads to suicide in one form or another, whether by gunshots or drugs. You can’t break a glass ceiling if you’re standing on ice.
It’s easy for the liberal intelligentsia to feel righteous in their disgust for lower-class white racism, but the college-educated elite that produces the intelligentsia is in trouble, too, with diminishing prospects and an ever-slipperier slope for the young. Whole professions have fallen on hard times, from college teaching to journalism and the law. One of the worst mistakes this relative elite could make is to try to pump up its own pride by hating on those -- of any color or ethnicity -- who are falling even faster.

I will give credit where its due, tomdispatch does put out some excellent anti-war stuff sometimes, but this is crap. Two different mentions of that bullshit in missuori. The author needed to bring up, twice, and ALLEGED instance of someone yelling a racial slur out of a pickup truck on a college campus, which there is no way to verify if it happened or not, and two mentions of the poop swastika?? Anyone who is over the age of 3 who would draw something with their own shit has serious problems and probably shouldn't be taken as a sign of endemic racism. Any article that mentions these things with such prevelance is garbage. These constant mentions of 'microagression' as an actual serious thing are going to result in the biggest generation of pussies the world has ever seen. They get told they have some kind of 'privilage' because they are white, and end up having to pay for every stupid thing this government decides to do, since they are the majority of tax payers. Sitting around and seein the countries character being steadily eroded until it reaches banana republic status is truly depressing. What others call progress, we would call a downward spiral. Its even more depressing when you have children, because there is pretty much no way that they won't end up with a shittier country and a lower standard of living than the ones we have. I myself won't succumb to alcoholism, drug addiction, or suicide, but its not surprising that some people do. Every day you are expected to go to work, pay taxes, and then see more and more people enjoying the same or higher standard of living for doing jackshit. There is hardly anything more depressing that nseeing the fruits of your labor used to keep useless people fat and happy. In this country, hard work is punished by higher and higher taxes, which you must pay or else, while also having to endure a steady chorus of retards complaining about how you aren't doing your 'fair share'. Being indolent and shiftless is rewarded with an ever increasing amount of free shit. And this doesn't even include the corporate welfare and banker graft, which is even more depressing.

We went from eating out (80%) to cooking our own food (80%). Saving a bunch of money, eating healthier, more delicous food and feeling a lot better, too. The other 20% eating out is due to necessity. I actually like our home cooked foods compared to eating out and cooking is a lot of fun for the entire family.
Somewhere in the early part of the last 7 years I came to realize that I don't trust the food quality at any restaurant chain which has an MBA in their employ. Single outlet, or family-owned local chains for me. This isn't absolute; I seem to hit Chili’s and Magianos at least once a year, but this seems to work for me day-to-day.
Yeah, start with the MBA s, they are the low hanging, but ripe fruit.

As a former restaurant manager I can tell you that your cost of a home cooked restaurant quality dinner will cost you about 25% of your restaurant tab. Those same steaks, vegetables and wines are now available at most moderate to high end grocery stores. All you have to be willing to do is a half an hour in your own kitchen preparing and a few minutes stacking the dishes in your automatic dishwasher and after tax (12% in some convention cities) and tip (15-20%) your $150 guest check becomes $35-40. At least a c-note savings for an hour worth of work in your own home.
I think the restaurant industry is hugely over built and ripe for major downturn should the economy get much worse.
Plus as society continues its breakdown, by cooking in your own house or better yet, hosting friends and family to delightful dinners, you avoid being exposed to people exploding in front of your eyes. Both workers, customers, and people accosting you in parking lots and streets.....
If you're Caucasian you are like Thor, imbued with super powers and privileged, even if you slog away like a Mexican and make the same pay.

Blacks have been told their whole lives that their failure isn't their own fault, rather that it is white mens fault, the system and so on. External locus of control, in psy-speak. White men are more likely to view themsleves as responsible for their success or failure, and more likely to act to ameliorate their situation.
When I started peeling potatoes in my famiiy's restaurant in the early 60's, I sat for hours with southern, older black men named Lincoln, Roosevelt and Woodrow (their parents understood American values naming their kids after the politicians they admired). While they were not the most educated of men, they had honor, took pride in their work no matter how menial, and while every one of them may have gotten drunk a little too often, they always went home and supported their wife and 8 kids. Their family was all they talked about sometimes. That black man no longer exists. They were run back onto the plantation by liberal white politicians who saw their dependency and the destruction of their black family as future votes. To that end "mission accomplished".

As an older white man who has labored much of his life I can also suggest that maybe white middle class men have more reason to be taking pain medications. Or is it that black folk are just tougher, or maybe self medicate? I thought the evil white man had deliberately infected the black population with drug and addiction to destroy them....and now we find out it ain't working? I'm not religious either and your comments on abortion are absolutely correct. It is a far bigger issue but in this p.c. world no one will address it. All western countries and China are facing falling populations/birth rates. We have countries like Japan, Germany and China in serious trouble with aging populations. A lot of poor whites were no better off financially or received the white priviliges this idiot seems to assume everyone got because she did. What a joke. I grew up in a mixed race poor neighborhood and most people worked and died together, black white and hispanic. Never mind poor diet, most died of occupational hazards that gave them early disease. There was no racial preference for who drew the cancer card after working 40 years with industrial solvents in unventilated factories. The people who strained their hearts and broke their bodies as tradesmen. My two best friends are dead, both under 50, one black, one white. The generation that's dying off now worked in a cesspool of chemicals, asbestos, and worked our asses off.
I hate this racial bullshit. Everyone I know, ate lunch with every day, went out drinking with and hung out with were good people. Worked hard and raised the best familes they could hoping for something better for their kids which has been much harder to accomplish for all poor people across the board, not just one race or another. Looks like Whites are have been considered "undesirables. in 1960, Whites were 85% of the USA population, by 2010 it declining to 64% and by 2060 it will decline to about 43%. Blacks see a slight increase from 10% of the population in 1960 to 12% in 2010. Hispanics is the big winnner. in 1960 Hispanics were only 4% and in 2010 increased to 16%.
FWIW: I really comes down that Whites are having fewer children. Probably a combination of declining male wages and the rise of femanism.
I am a single white male and will not have any kids. I don't see any reason to pass on my gene's into a world of shit. I am also the end of the line for my family (only child and no other family members had children) and also the youngest. I will be the last person turning out the lights for my family. I expect I will eventually be visiting Doctors Smith & Wesson when the time comes. I see no point to suffering in poverty when I am no longer able to provide for myself, or endure suffering should irreversable health problems arrive.
That said, I think sooner or later there will be a nuclear war that euthanizes the entire world in a day.

I know about 4 people that have come down with crohnes disease recently and are getting chunks of themselves removed little by little, some are way too young for this. One only eats toast, milk and GMO beets and has been doing this since before they got really sick. Another only eats pasta and crackers and the other two ate an assortment of almost entirely processed foods. The claim it may be genetic and yet it is exploding all of the sudden. I think we are finally seeing the impacts of our GMO and extra helpings of pesticides come home to roost.
I asked my alternative doc what they would recommend for the condition because my friends Mom is going to die at this rate and she said to get them off wheat and all milk products ASAP and get food allergy and parasite testing along with some other things. They have already removed intestine and never tested for either... WTH. That is all she eats!
Ive seen a few people with that too. That and ulcerative cholitis. It amazes me the diet some of them have too. Fast food all the fucking time, soda non stop, and the worst processed junk you can imagine. But I can tell you, its gets really fucking expensive trying to eat good. Another 30% or so just to eat apples that haven't been doused with chemicals. It does make me wonder though, if its the pesticdes on the GMO crops, or all the unpronouncable chemicals that are in every bit of processed food.

The main issue may not be chemicals... at least with Crohns disease (aka "MAP"). A few years ago we bought a couple of "bred heifers" from a dairy herd. Both carried to term and had their calves. Then one of them got sick. We checked them out and determined that they had MAP, which after a lot of study we determined that it was caused by the "farmer" (no real farmer would treat animals like he did) providing poor nutrition and allowing the cows to "graze" on "pasture" that was so close to the ground the cows were getting significant amounts of dirt with what vegetation they could scrounge. Thus they became infested with the micro-organisms that cause MAP. As long as the calves/cows weren't overly stressed, they didn't get sick.
The first cow to get sick was poor to begin with. The second didn't get sick until the first one died and the second one had to feed a second calf, which stressed the cow and then she got sick. We kind of donated the first one to a young local vet who'd never seen the disease, (no dairy herds in our area), then a .22 to alleviate the suffering.
And we now have to wait at least 3 years before we can put cows on that pasturage. MAP is one of those things that is caused almost entirely by poor herd management, as the "disease" is omnipresent in most pastures and fields.
I knew somebody who went vegetarian back in the Seventies. Lots of home baked breads and wheat products like noodles. Within 2 years he was bleeding internally and developed Ulcerative Colitis. I have always wondered if there was a connection between the two. Modern doctors and adherents to low carb diets say yes.
Roddy - Yep, I bleed if I eat too much products with wheat in it. I limit by breads and also sugar which is a big killer. My diet is moslty poulty, salads using romaine, eat lots of beans. I eat a lot of chili with ground turkey. I.mix onions and red peppers for omletts, turkey bacon amd a little cheese and ham. Eat Fiber One cereal only. For a healthy digestive system you need 38 grams per day. Thats a bowl of chili or cereal. Use Almond Milk. Now same price as regular milk and way better for you.
Limiting alchohol but really should just quit. Working on that. Exercise 3-4 times a week at the gym. I supplement with Emergen-C, Omega 3 (flax oil), probiotics twice per day and a digestive enzyme.
The day I take once a week or so and I drink and eat crap I really pay for it and notice the difference. I buy veggie pasta from Barillo which doesnt bother my stomach and its same price as other pastas.
I am on a light dose of anxiety pills. The digestive problems are highly correlated to mental health. If your digestive system doesnt metabolize food properly it cant process the chemicals your brain needs. This will produce excess adrenaline and dopamine which cause mood disorders. The adrenaline does amplify beta brain waves which can be a plus which is why some of your best scientific and creative minds are bi-polar. But I found it better to control this with a chill pill to come down.
I avoid caffiene, that overstimulates my nerves and spikes anxiety. Bad for the gut. I hope my sharing is useful. As I get busy I try to make enough food for a couple of meals of left overs for grab and go. Every once in a while I eat a burger as they taste so good but that is a rare treat and doesnt hurt me unless I eat three of them at one time! All this doesnt cost much and am in good health at 45.
Another possibility is Fructose malabsorption. A home test...don't plan on going out that day... is a bottle of pear juice. If you get diarrhoea,sweating you should order a fructose malabsorbtion test from your dr. I worked this out for my son after doctors kept taking bits out. Modified diet has changed his life. It is easy to mix this up with irritable bowel but they are quite different. Irritable bowel benefits from probiotics or additional bacteria from yoghurt. People with fructose problems have an excess of bacteria and should NOT eat yoghurt or have probiotic s. Other high fructose products all dried fruit, honey. Look online for more details.
MsNo, I don't know why anyone would have downvoted what you wrote. I am seeing that also. Have these people tried probiotics? Changing their colon bacteria might save them. it won't get rid of the underlying cause, which could be any of number of things, but it could help them hold on.
Also they need to look into fecal transplant. It is not just for Clostridium now; it is also being used for IBD/Crohn's/ulcerative colitis. It is a way of changing the colon bacteria. If they can't get a doctor to do it they can do it themselves with a friend's/relatives stool, by enema.
Our dog has ulcerative colitiis and these are the things we are doing. A lot of dogs these days have IBD; supposedly it is genetic but there are too many new cases for that to be true.

All this means that we are accelerating into a event horizon where something like general AI will annihilate a very large percentage of human beings ability to earn a living.
Almost the entire world has experienced this certainly mostly the developed world and it's getting worse every day.
China is not going to solve this because they are too far down the curve and are chasing their own tail on this one worse than anyone else.

I'm a white guy. Back in early eighties, I was going through a divorce and had a hard time. For a brief time, I had to move down on "the other side of the tracks".

In order to do 1 good 1 bad must be done, we compensate by spreading the 1 bad over us all so instead of 1 bad it becomes 0.1 bad x 10 people.
The problem is Alchemy can be used for good or bad, you can charge a bad action with a bad action so that net energy stolen from 10 people can be used to harm 10 people or 1 person or 100 persons.
Instead of Alchemy we call it the national debt and inflation.

What appears to be a “credit” given to whites, “White Privilege”, is in fact a debit to blacks for “Black Rascality”. Whites got credit for “pro-social” behavior. While whites have lost ground economically, blacks have made gains, at least in the de jure sense. As a result, the “psychological wage” awarded to white people has been shrinking.
Other factors have reduced the psychological wage awarded to white people; affirmative action and the idea that whites should have guilt for black’s lack of merit in most spheres of activity, constant propagandizing against whites by the media, the distortion of the rules and contexts in which professional sports are played to favor blacks and the virtual obliteration of white popular music. These media, sports and music corporations are owned and controlled by people who see themselves as non-white.
For most of American history, government could be counted on to maintain white power and privilege by enforcing slavery and later segregation. When the federal government finally weighed in on the side of desegregation, working class whites were left to defend their own diminishing privilege by moving rightward toward the likes of Alabama Governor […] George Wallace and […] Donald Trump.
The Federal government has gone far beyond mere segregation. The level of social engineering in America is unmatched in human history and is completely incompatible with a democratic or republican form of government. Any idea of merit has been ditched for purely political motives.
At the same time, the day-to-day task of upholding white power devolved from the federal government to the state and then local level, specifically to local police forces, which, as we know, have taken it up with such enthusiasm as to become both a national and international scandal.

It must be noted that “local” police forces across America now receive military training from federal and foreign (Israel) sources. As a result there is increased militarization of police which effects all races and it is a matter of national policy.
Of course, there was also the election of the first black president. White, native-born Americans began to talk of “taking our country back.” The more affluent ones formed the Tea Party; less affluent ones often contented themselves with affixing Confederate flag decals to their trucks.
The election of the first president with some African genetic material (he is half white), once again raises racial issues that plague America. We have a president about who little is known due largely to the suppression of his history. His upbringing as a Muslim in Indonesia (what little we know of it) implies his being inculcated at an impressionable age with ideas that run counter to American principals. Having risen meteorically from civilian to president in a mere handful of years he appears to have little merit and was seemingly appointed to be president. His behavior in office has done little to belie the belief that he is incapable of performing the position at a sufficiently high level.
One thing that these dissenting whites have in common is the belief that American society needs to be decentralized if America has any hope of surviving and thriving in any form. Decentralization in any form in an anathma to the people currently in ascendency in America. They portray decentralization as a mere racial issue to trivialize it and to willfully misunderstand it.
