DMV Releases Photo Of "Radicalized" Mass Shooter After Weapons Trove Found In House

Tyler Durden's picture

Update: DMV officials have released a driver's license photo of Syed Rizwan Farook.

Earlier today, we profiled Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27, the couple who stormed a San Bernardino County holiday party with two assault rifles, killing 14 and wounding 21 more in the deadliest mass shooting America has seen since Sandy Hook.

While the jury is still out on possible motives, Farook did travel to Saudi Arabia before marrying Malik, a Pakistan native who apparently taveled to the US after Farook's trip to the Mid-East.

While that certainly doesn't qualify as conclusive evidence, we did note earlier that according to several profiles Farook set up on dating sites, he identified himself as Sunni and when it comes to radicalizing Sunni Muslims, the Saudis and their brand of puritanitcal Wahhabism are second to none. Of course the connection to the Mid-East is itself enough to arouse suspicion among an American public that's now hyper-sensistive to Islamic extremism in the wake of the Paris attacks and thanks to fact that the issue has been politicized by Presidential candidates on both sides of the aisle. Reuters says Farook came back into the US in 2014 and also traveled to Pakistan "at one point."

Here's what we said earlier:

Of course at the end of the day, two people opening fire with assault rifles on a holiday party seems pretty "terrifying" to us regardless of what inspired the shooters, but remember, crises like these are only "useful" in today's world if they serve someone's geopolitical ends so don't be surprised if the mainstream media soon turns up the San Bernardino equivalent of the forged Syrian passport found in Paris three weeks ago.

Sure enough, CNN now reports that Farook was "apparently radicalized" and was "in touch with people being investigated by the FBI for international terrorism." Similarly, NBC says Farook was in contact with "overseas individuals." The FBI now says Farook communicated with people who were on the bureau's radar in connection with a terrorism investigation. Officials also said the contact was with "people who weren't significant players," and was dated. There was no documentation of any "surge" in communication prior to the shooting.

We now know that Malik had a Pakistani passport and came to the U.S. on a fiancee visa. Farook entered the US with Malik in July of 2014. The FBI reportedly "doesn't know all of the countries" Farook visited. AP reports that in order to get the visa, Malik "had to submit to an in-person interview and biometric and background checks to ensure she wasn't a threat to public safety or national security."

According to The NY Times, the FBI is now treating the shooting as a terrorism case.

CNN also says investigators are analyzing an apparent "bomb lab" at Farook's residence. Authorities have reportedly discovered "hundreds" of tools that could be used to make IEDs.

As reported earlier, the couple used a DPMS model and a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 along with two handguns - a llama and a Smith & Wesson - in the attack. The rifles, two .223s, are capable of piercing bulletproof vests. The weapons were purchased legally.

Farook and Malik also placed a "device" consisting of three connected pipe bombs at the scene. Apparently, the remote detonator failed. 65-75 rounds were fired in the initial attack. 76 additional shots were fired at officers.

Found in the suspects' home:

  • 2,500 .223 rounds
  • 2,000 9mm rounds
  • 12 pipe bombs

Found in the black SUV:

  • 1,400 .223 rounds
  • 200 9mm rounds

The trove of weapons police discovered indicated that the pair were "armed for a second attack."

Additionally, AP has the following account of Farook's family history:

The records obtained Thursday by The Associated Press show that Syed Farook's mother, Rafia, described her husband in 2006 as "irresponsible, negligent and an alcoholic."

She said she was forced to move out of her home with three of her children because her husband continually harassed her "verbally and physically and refused to leave the home."

She filed a no-contact, stay-away domestic violence protection petition on July 3, 2006. She alleged that same year that her husband attacked her while her kids were present, dropped a TV on her and pushed her toward a car.

Very few gun dealers will ship to CA. Big on airsoft...harmless but the cops can still legitimately shoot you for carrying one. Just don't delete the red tip to be cool.

Well, that would be if "legitimately" just means they won't be prosecuted, as it is anywhere, even here in TX.

Or Cincinatti, Ohio, where, despite being an open carry state, cops notoriously gunned down a teenager for carrying an airsoft gun in his pants waistband in a public park.  More importantly, they drove up and shot him before the police car even stopped moving, or he had time to say "hello". The video is on Youtube, and the cops were suspended, but returned to duty.
Could have just as easily been a real gun, but apparently they simply shoot everyone on sight open-carrying.

Rifles can't have "evil features" like pistol grips, bayonet lugs, etc. If they do, they have to have fixed magazines limited to ten rounds, in an AR-15 style rifle, that would mean a device like a "bullet button" which requires a tool, or the tip of a bullet used as a tool, to release the magazine. Just goes to show that these asinine laws are only obeyed by law abiding citizens.

But hey, don't worry, this will have it's intended effect, to increase gun control laws and militarization of the police.

I've also heard a few times that they were definitely using "large caliber weapons".

For those that don't know, an AR-15 fires a 22 caliber bullet (basically the smallest bullet available, but with a lot of gunpowder behind it and not for shooting squirrels like other 22's). The devastastion comes from the fact that it's moving so fast (physics), but it's definitely not a large caliber weapon.

Allow me to revise my statement for clarity: An AR-15 fires a .223 (or 5.56x45), which is the exact same bullet diameter as the 22lr which you might shoot a squirrel with. They're both 22 caliber bullets, and I don't know of any smaller calibers using gunpowder. The smallest caliber clearly can't be considered "large caliber".

It would be much more accurate if the news called it a "small caliber" or "smallest caliber" weapon. It aint "automatic" and it aint "large caliber" and it doesn't have "clips".

Jason Stapleton did a great job covering this:

http://www.jasonstapleton.com/stop-speculating-drive-by-media-and-the-24...

The long and short of it is, in the first few to several hours after the incident, the media has no idea what's going on, and fills in the gaps with speculation. Something I'd love to learn to do, is write a program that records the highlight text from these 24/7 news stations, and see how many blatantly false statements are made daily. Especially after something big.

Organized religion was the original form of 'centralized government'.  The military had its hierarchy (with King up top, Generals and Nobility underneath) and its objectives (secure the borders, repel invasion, suppress rebellion, conscript local teenagers, etc).  The church had its hierarchy (Pope, ArchBishops, etc)  and objectives (tax the locals, expand jurisdiction, maintain 'law and order').

That was what 'separation of Church and State' meant, in medieval times.

We can identify a common thread here.  Centralized government.  Don't blame the tool for the objective it was used for.

No, ignorance is THE plague on humanity. Religion is a means of placing blame of our actions onto others, onto organizations that undoubtedly desire to influence and control us...the same as it has always been, some for good, many for evil. But, it is up to us, each individually, to stand up against ignorance and those who desire to take advantage of it. There has much done good in the name of religions....almost ALL religions. It is their organization, their incontestable power that is the danger, just as we see from our governments, who seek to control all, influence all, be ALL. Religions, as with ALL organizations, simple put into focus the dangers that an ignorant humanity can pose. We should be used to this by now.

And, if you had really done some reading outside of a book that you assume was divinely inspired, you would realize that the patriarchal nature of these religions creates the underpinning of our top down from God mentality, which has, in fact, been plaguing us for a couple of thousand years or so as a societal structure.  That is what places the power and the money in the hands of the very few.

A .22lr is lethal at 1-1/2 miles.  It will penetrate a 1/2" pine board at that distance (if you could hit the board, of course).

It would depend on the grade of pine. I would buy in that a .22 will penetrate a 1/2" pine board at 500 yards which by US Army standards is considered lethal. The standard warning on .22LR boxes is that it can/may reach 1.5 miles. In days gone by the warnings used to be 1 mile or 1.25 miles. None the less to be hit at 1.5 miles would smart but would not necessarily be lethal. Here is a test out to 440 yards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUM1r_444CY

I just can't be sold on the "defensive" shotgun.  Too long, too hungry, too slow.  The time and effort required to become proficient with a shotgun could be spent on an AR type carbine that is capable of taking a percentage shot without "select slug" manipulation, and has much more firepower.

And you know your patterning so well you can take a percentage shot (hostage/non-combatant in front of target) and it ends well.  You are certainly better than most. As far as firepower goes, projectiles per trigger squeeze is not firepower.  You get to squeeze the trigger 7-8 times before you must reload (if you are good you shoot a couple load a couple).  Non-jacketed lead balls at 9mm diameter and velocity will not penetrate armor.  The blunt trauma will reduce the target at close range, so there's that.  Now try to pie off a small room with a standard shotgun.  I'm not stuck on any one platform, but the almost indoctrinated adherence to the shotty over the carbine is nonsense.  Check out Max Velocity's fighing from the door CQB and his comments on the subject, real dudes doing it for real.

Yes with flash light and green laser, for in house close quarters work. Everyone has their preference. Plus the KSG can cycle the short loads getting capacity up there and being a little less lethal close up. While I'm intent on repelling intruders, I'm not dead set on killing them.

I have pretty much all of the above and find everything has its strengths. The most important thing is familiarity and repetitive use, which pretty much eliminates reliability factors, as if proven unreliable, it no longer exists in the arsenal.

It has a thumb safety on the top of the action, so it takes way too much time to knock it off with your thumb, then put your thumb down below the stock and around the pistol grip, then pull the trigger.  It is a FUBAR design.

Every time I see a gear whore post I have to laugh. These guys in Paris and these nuts in CA didn't have any of that and they wrought havoc. While you're busy trying to not scuff up your $1300 tactical shotgun they'll be slaughtering you with a $150 sawed off and pure will.
Or a $550 DPMS with a 30 rd mag while you try to Chris Costa your way into a speed reload. Problem is you didn't buy enough ammo and train enough to get your muscle memory down.
That's a bunch of rich guy show off crap.
Everything you just posted could be done at a 1/3.
Hardware is nice, but software wins fight.
You should have 8 times as as much ammo and 8 times as much training and lose all that gear whore garbage.

If you have the $$$, you can buy DRAGON SKIN ARMOR.  Go to YT and also search for LIQUID ARMOR.

In a more realistic/probable scenario of getting caught in this kind of an attack, the best thing to do it the obvious thing:  Do Not Run.  Take Cover behind the nearest object that gives decent protection, or hit the ground.  Crouching and running is BS, as a skilled shooter can hit you just as well.

You can also get a Body Armor Plate that you insert in your backpack, with school and executive versions abailable.  For ~$200, they are worth it, assuming you think your life is worth it.

Pinnacle Armor, the makers of Dragon Skin, went out of business in 2010, after their product failed to secure military contracts and failed NIJ certification testing/re-testing.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Skin

.223 rifle bullets, of the type used in this attack, will easily penetrate a single layer of pretty much anything you can reasonably find in the interior of a commercial or residential structure, even interior walls not made of masonry.
Distance from the attacker is in fact your best defense, not only because range lowers your target priority, but also because it lowers the liklihood of getting hit accidentality or on purpose (accuracy falls off with range, even with carefully aimed shots).
If you are too close to the attacker to get away quickly and easily, attack the assailant instead. Close the gap as quickly as possible, and begin pummeling him/her. Aim for groin, throat, and/or wrists.

In the south SF Bay Area in Santa Clara, we have a bigass Muslim Community Association center building, and an Islamic skool next door. One of the best live-and-let-live skate spots in the area is at the Hope Services donation center parking lot next door. I've been skating that parking lot long before that new building next door came about. One time I had a chat with an African fella passing by and admiring my tricks - he cooks at the MCA center - nice gentleman, soft-spoken. He had a few puffs from my joint and was happy to have had the chance to smoke, and even invited me to go try the food there sometime.

I don't know what the point of my story is, but I guess I mean to say that not all muslims are terrizz.

edit: On the other side of town, in the once-and-still-mostly-white Campbell, CA, I see an Islamic skool popped up. Now that shit looks sketch, like it doesn't belong.

You can't trust what they teach in skool - any skool. Filling young minds full of mush and turning them into terrizz, or worse, welfare-bums or social justice warriors.

Skateboarder; I like to find out where they are from and how long they have been over here.  That will tell a lot - language, sect, level of [their] paranoia ...

The new Muslim influx we have out here in Concord came in very quietly, and hails from Damascus.  They stick together and obviously maintain a level of awareness while in public that is  above the norm for the region.  As would I.  Many of the women wear hijabs.  Some are actually not half-bad looking.

They were getting Amerikan-made bombs rained on them in Syria and beat feet over here when the opportunity arose.  The men are not confined by their getups while the women are easy to spot and appear assigned to child-rearing.  Never see the women behind the wheel of anything.

And oh yes, that Cali weed for the fear factor.  Puts me right down the rabbit hole every time.  "Total fear is total awareness"   -- Chuckie Manson

Yeah, for a competition shooter that is when he or she is "running low" on ammo.

There will FOR SURE be calls by California politicians to make it illegal to buy ammo in quantities larger than 500 rounds at a time. Why 500? Because the people who wait in line before the store opens to buy .22LR from Walmart in bricks will throw a fit if the limit is set any lower.

Calif. leftist politicians would probably initially try to set the limit at 50 rounds, a single box of pistol cartridges.

That's so silly.  Civilians in CA cant have mags bigger than 10rds, and anyway the mags have to be permanently affixed if the rifle is semi-auto AND has evil features like a collapsing stock, pistol grip, or flash suppressor, under Calofornia law.  The ways this isnt possible under CA law are too numerous to count.

Thu, 12/03/2015 - 14:33 | 6871742 Ms. Erable

Wrong on a number of counts:

1. Mags do not have to be permanently attached to semi-auto rifles.

2. Pistol grips are not illegal, depending on their configuration.

3. Flash suppressors must be permanently mounted, but are otherwise legal.

4. Collapsible stocks are legal, so long as they don't reduce the overall length of the weapon below the legal minimum.

And all of these restrictions are arbitrary and completely ridiculous, having been created by a state assembly that knew absolutely nothing about firearms.

As to the 'can't have mags over 10 rounds' thing, I don't know anyone that turned theirs in when it became illegal to own one a couple of years ago (previous law said they could not be purchased or used in CA). All of my magazines are, of course, limited to only 10 rounds. No, really...

Thu, 12/03/2015 - 15:28 | 6871953 TBT or not TBT
TBT or not TBT's picture

Yes, under some conditions, the conditions I have stated, you can have a detachable magazine on a semi-auto rifle in CA.   It must not have an adjustable, nor a pistol grip, nor a flash supressor.  Then you can release magazines and replace them and no "bullet button" or similar need be installed.  Do NOT however remove a mag from your bullet-button equipped semi auto rifle while it has any of the thre le scary features.  That's illegal and will get you in all kinds of trouble if you are caught by an LEO who cares.

You cannot have a pistol grip AND a detachable magazine. You can have one or the other. Having both makes it illegal. If you fix the magazine with a pistol grip, its legal.

My point - not that I have any disagreement with you gents - is that if one can remove the magazine froom the weapon, it's not permanent (regardless of what some pinhead in Sacto thinks). Doesn't matter if you have to take that extra half-second to push the bullshit - er, excuse me - bullet button to remove it, it's still being removed.

Do the many, many, many Black-on-Black, drug-related murders in the big inner cities (Chicago, Detroit, Philly...) involve Tactical Rifles or basic hnadguns?

BTW, as I've posted before, the rifle used was a civilian Tactical Rifle (semi-automatic mode only), not  the military Assault Rifle that has 3 modes:  Single/Semi-auto, Burst, and Full-Auto firing.  Note that Jihadists use the latter.  Please insist the the MSM and Gov use correct terminology, because words do matter.
