DMV Releases Photo Of "Radicalized" Mass Shooter After Weapons Trove Found In House
Update: DMV officials have released a driver's license photo of Syed Rizwan Farook.
Earlier today, we profiled Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27, the couple who stormed a San Bernardino County holiday party with two assault rifles, killing 14 and wounding 21 more in the deadliest mass shooting America has seen since Sandy Hook.
While the jury is still out on possible motives, Farook did travel to Saudi Arabia before marrying Malik, a Pakistan native who apparently taveled to the US after Farook's trip to the Mid-East.
While that certainly doesn't qualify as conclusive evidence, we did note earlier that according to several profiles Farook set up on dating sites, he identified himself as Sunni and when it comes to radicalizing Sunni Muslims, the Saudis and their brand of puritanitcal Wahhabism are second to none. Of course the connection to the Mid-East is itself enough to arouse suspicion among an American public that's now hyper-sensistive to Islamic extremism in the wake of the Paris attacks and thanks to fact that the issue has been politicized by Presidential candidates on both sides of the aisle. Reuters says Farook came back into the US in 2014 and also traveled to Pakistan "at one point."
Here's what we said earlier:
Of course at the end of the day, two people opening fire with assault rifles on a holiday party seems pretty "terrifying" to us regardless of what inspired the shooters, but remember, crises like these are only "useful" in today's world if they serve someone's geopolitical ends so don't be surprised if the mainstream media soon turns up the San Bernardino equivalent of the forged Syrian passport found in Paris three weeks ago.
Sure enough, CNN now reports that Farook was "apparently radicalized" and was "in touch with people being investigated by the FBI for international terrorism." Similarly, NBC says Farook was in contact with "overseas individuals." The FBI now says Farook communicated with people who were on the bureau's radar in connection with a terrorism investigation. Officials also said the contact was with "people who weren't significant players," and was dated. There was no documentation of any "surge" in communication prior to the shooting.
We now know that Malik had a Pakistani passport and came to the U.S. on a fiancee visa. Farook entered the US with Malik in July of 2014. The FBI reportedly "doesn't know all of the countries" Farook visited. AP reports that in order to get the visa, Malik "had to submit to an in-person interview and biometric and background checks to ensure she wasn't a threat to public safety or national security."
According to The NY Times, the FBI is now treating the shooting as a terrorism case.
CNN also says investigators are analyzing an apparent "bomb lab" at Farook's residence. Authorities have reportedly discovered "hundreds" of tools that could be used to make IEDs.
As reported earlier, the couple used a DPMS model and a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 along with two handguns - a llama and a Smith & Wesson - in the attack. The rifles, two .223s, are capable of piercing bulletproof vests. The weapons were purchased legally.
Farook and Malik also placed a "device" consisting of three connected pipe bombs at the scene. Apparently, the remote detonator failed. 65-75 rounds were fired in the initial attack. 76 additional shots were fired at officers.
Found in the suspects' home:
- 2,500 .223 rounds
- 2,000 9mm rounds
- 12 pipe bombs
Found in the black SUV:
- 1,400 .223 rounds
- 200 9mm rounds
The trove of weapons police discovered indicated that the pair were "armed for a second attack."
Additionally, AP has the following account of Farook's family history:
The records obtained Thursday by The Associated Press show that Syed Farook's mother, Rafia, described her husband in 2006 as "irresponsible, negligent and an alcoholic."
She said she was forced to move out of her home with three of her children because her husband continually harassed her "verbally and physically and refused to leave the home."
She filed a no-contact, stay-away domestic violence protection petition on July 3, 2006. She alleged that same year that her husband attacked her while her kids were present, dropped a TV on her and pushed her toward a car.

In Old French, yes, but the term took some detours on the way to modern English. More to the point though, once a reporter starts adding unnecessary and subjective characterizations that they aren't even qualified to make- the person ceases reporting. It would be just as incorrect to characterize it as "tiny or impotent stash." Although if someone from the Scum Bernadino PD did said it was a tiny stash, that might be appropriate given the perspective of the shear overwhelming volume of firearms and ammunition that the police brought to bear against the .gov deskjockey cum terrorist.

Sure, their ideology stinks when it comes to violence, but their problem is mental illness that is exacerbated and used by those promoting this ideology. This is a human problem, not a religious one. These people have been indoctrinated for a thousand years in relatively closed societies. Exposure to western values and lifestyles is going to appeal to some and rouse absolute hatred in others, but regardless of their "religion" they are sick broken people to perpetrate these acts. So while he was driving to Redlands the Execution Squad enters the Banquet Hall and starts shooting up the place. They are also driving a similar SUV. All according to plan. Get the public TeeVee audience to FOCUS ON THE SUV.
If you watched the events "develop", as I did, they were concentrating on looking for the black SUV...which "MIGHT" have been involved in the shooting. They did not say anything much about the perps...other than that they were WHITE...which Pakistanis are NOT WHITE....They are BROWN or Olive Skinned. (Nice contradiction?)
This poor soul gets to his wife and baby, and drives the baby over to Grandma's House...who has been watching the news.
She tells her son that the shooters were driving a Black SUV and that they were looking for that vehicle.
Immediately sensing that he might be mistaken to be the shooter, he and his wife drive back...TO THE SCENE OF THE CRIME,???...in order to clear his name. His wife was a witness to his where abouts DURING THE TIME OF THE SHOOTING.
When they arrive back they are waiting and conceniently stage an auto accident.
Fearing the worst he starts to run. A police cruiser just opens up fire into the passenger cabin firing multiple rounds, ensuring his death and his wife's death..
They quickly plant the weapons before the news crews get there.
Why you may ask?
Many reasons. Law Enforcement wanted to demonstrate that they could find the perpetrator(s) fast because of "superior intelligence". (Of course they could because THEY DID THE CRIME AND SET IT UP.)
The President wanted to have another fake Mass Shooting to attempt to restrict firearm ownership.
The CIA and Military wants this to foment PUBLIC SUPPORT for an all out War in Syria.
This attack was just too well planned and executed to be pulled off by a LIBERAL HEALTH INSPECTOR and his wife.
If he and his wife actually did this they'd have bailed. They would not be having BABIES and planning a family. I cannot buy this story at all.

Define "white". I didn't really understand it well until I went and lived in India for about a year and a half. The Indians are Caucasian. Their skin color runs the gamut from grape ape to Willy Wonka white. The perp described himself as "wheatish" which is on the light side---looks like a European skin tone....so yeah, "white".
You might not get much support out of calling Indians "caucasian," as people generally look at skin tone as the distinguishing factor. Proto-Indo-European theory has many merits. These "Northern" people, from Iceland to India, all look about the same - facial structure and otherwise.

Regarding the language, yes, it's oddly not all that difficult to start understanding Hindi after a month or so. The word that sort of blew my mind was the Hindi word for five, "panch", is related to our English word punch.

WASHINGTON — In the two years before the Sept. 11 attacks, the North American Aerospace Defense Command conducted exercises simulating what the White House says was unimaginable at the time: hijacked airliners used as weapons to crash into targets and cause mass casualties.
One of the imagined targets was the World Trade Center. In another exercise, jets performed a mock shootdown over the Atlantic Ocean of a jet supposedly laden with chemical poisons headed toward a target in the United States. In a third scenario, the target was the Pentagon — but that drill was not run after Defense officials said it was unrealistic, NORAD and Defense officials say.
NORAD, in a written statement, confirmed that such hijacking exercises occurred. It said the scenarios outlined were regional drills, not regularly scheduled continent-wide exercises.

In a similar vein... I've noticed public military movements of military vehicles in the Pac NW, that I have never seen before.
Everything from columns of Army trucks and what look like missiles being transported, to National Guard fighter jets now flying over metropolitan cities fairly regularly, at only a few thousand feet above ground.

All windows on modern vehicles (save the windshield) are designed to shatter with a sharp rap from a hard object.
Windshields, on the other hand, are designed to remain in one piece, regardless of the cracks in the glass.
To accomplish this, they are composed of two layers of glass sandwiching a layer of plastic. This is for two primary reasons: 1) So that a stray rock or other projectile at highway speeds doesn't result in a shattered windshield with glass debris distributed into vehicle occupants; 2) It acts as a support for the vehicle's front airbag when it deploys, thus must retain its integrity despite any damage to the glass layers from the impact that caused the airbag's deployment.

you are incorrect. The .223/5.6 can penetrate a vest unless it is of the highest rating. Ordinary daily wear equipment is rated in the middle of the range and .223, with very fast rate of travel give the round ability to penetrate most vests. One can beef up and go to a higher level of protection but the gear gets heavy fast. I'd bet, if they though they would encounter return fire, it would be 9mm or .45cal. One would not have extra thick ceramic plates for that and one could move much more easily than if prepared for 30cal. (sniper rounds).
I'm not sure why you think the rifle makes a difference, it does not, at least in most circumstances.
The round itself makes a big difference as well. Bullets that don't expand are much harder to stop with body armor. I don't know the specifics but I do know that one range I frequent does not allow steel bullets to be used in their indoor rifle range. Steel bullets have the potential to penetrate the barrier and exit the building.
Maybe if the walls are made out of wallboard and 2x4's.

That simply isn't true.
Using FMJ, .223/5.56 assault rifle isn't necessarily guaranteed to penetrate body armor. Maybe so maybe no. It would depend on the armor, the distance, the angle...etc.
To guarantee (nearly) body armor penetration in (nearly) every case, steel-tipped rounds would be necessary.
And those can be fired from any rifle - not just an assault rifle and not just in .223.
A 5.56 mm round will absolutely go through most soft body armor, and so will virtually every rifle larger than a .17 and .22. "Why?" do you ask. Well because of basic physics: a combination of mass and velocity = energy on impact. Rifle rounds deliver orders of magnitude more energy to the target than a pistol round (that's 10 X for laypeople) . A 5.56 mm in 55 grain is screaming fast, clocking in just over 3000 feet per second! Most pistol rounds don't even break 1000. Soft armor with the highest rating is generally safe for all pistol rounds including 9mm parabellum (9mm and 40 have some pretty fun terminal energy combinations due to their mass and velocity but that's another story). If you expect to get in a gun fight where rifles are involved, you absolutely better fucking have rifle plates if you catch a round and want to live through it. [They're called rifle plates because they're to stop rifle rounds. They're also called ballistic plates, chicken plates, etc.]. Most said plates are steel or a laminated ceramic with a spall guard. The spalling guard is a coating of fabric or other material in hopes of catching the projectile so it doesn't ricochet into your face. The steel plates are really really heavy (and cheap), and the ceramic are about half again lighter.
Rifle plates will generally stop all rifle rounds up to and including .30 caliber (that includes AK pattern rifles). 338 Lapua and higher, and kiss your ass goodbye.
FN 5.7x28 and 22TCM are both handgun ammo and both have muzzle velocity of over 2000fps. Hassan killed quiet a few service people with a FN57.
