Turkey Detains Russian Ships In Black Sea, Blasts Moscow For Brandishing Rocket Launcher In Strait

Tyler Durden's picture

Exactly a week ago, we warned that Turkey does have one trump card when it comes to dealing with an angry Russian bear that’s hell bent on making life miserable for Ankara in the wake of Erdogan’s brazen move to shoot down a Russian Su-24 near the Syrian border. Turkey, we explained, could move to close the Bosphorus Strait, cutting one of Moscow’s key supply lines to Latakia.

We went on to explain, that such a move would probably be illegal based on the 1936 Montreux Convention, but as Sputnik noted, "in times of war, the passage of warships shall be left entirely to the discretion of the Turkish government."

Obviously, Turkey and Russia haven’t formally declared war on one another, but the plane “incident” marked the first time a NATO member has engaged a Russian or Soviet aircraft in more than six decades and given the gravity of that escalation, one would hardly put it past Erdogan to start interfering with Moscow’s warships, especially if it means delaying their arrival in Syria where the Russians are on the verge of restoring an Assad government that’s Turkey despises.

Well sure enough, the tit-for-tat mutual escalation that’s ensued since the Su-24 crash has spilled over into the maritime arena with Moscow and Ankara detaining each other's ships.

After five Turkish vessels were held at the port of Novorossiysk for “inspections,” Turkey retaliated on Friday by holding four Russian ships at the Black Sea port of Samsun. The following table reveals a hilarious list of the Russian vessels’ alleged infractions which apparently include fire safety violations, pollution prevention violations, and problems with “life saving appliances.”:

One of the vessels - the cargo ship Crystal - has yet to be released.

"Six ships with a Russian flag were checked at Samsun Port on Dec. 5. The ships were found to be in compliance with Port State Control (PSC) rules, a series of international standards that all ships are required to meet, but some problems were subsequently detected in four of the ships," Hurriyet says, adding that "three of the ships consequently met the requirements and were permitted to leave, but the remaining vessel has not yet been permitted to depart."

The Crystal apparently lacks the "required documents."

Obviously, Russia and Turkey are engaged in a bit of petty mutual escalation here, but it's worth noting that Samsun isn't far from the Bosphorus:

And while Turkey now appears content to harrass Russian cargo vessels, one shouldn't discount the possibility that Erodgan will look to do something more provocative now that it looks like the UN will ultimately be dragged into the ISIS oil smuggling debate.

Indeed, Moscow seems to be taking the Bosphorus issue quite seriously because as Hurriyet reported just hours ago, when the Russian warship Caesar Kunikov made its way through the strait on Saturday, a Russian soldier stood on deck with a shoulder ground-to-air missile at the ready.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu's response: "For a Russian soldier to display a rocket launcher or something similar while passing on a Russian warship is a provocation. If we perceive a threatening situation, we will give the necessary response."" Indeed.

And meanwhile, three NATO warships have dropped anchor off Istanbul’s Sarayburnu coast: Portugal's F-334 NRP Francisco de Almeida, Spain’s F-105 ESPS Blaz de Lezo, and Canada's FFG-338 HMCS Winnipeg.

Georgia strips ex-president Saakashvili of citizenship

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-georgia-saakashvili-idUSKBN0TN1S220151204

Georgia on Friday stripped former president Mikheil Saakashvili of his citizenship, in a move one of his supporters described as part of a settling of political scores.

Georgian President Georgy Margvelashvili signed a decree removing his predecessor's citizenship on the grounds that Saakashvili, now governor of Ukraine's Odessa region, became a Ukrainian national in May.

Saakashvili came to power in a bloodless "Rose Revolution" in 2003 and steered Georgia on a pro-Western course that antagonized Moscow and culminated in a five-day war in 2008 in which Georgia was crushed by Russian forces.

He is wanted in Georgia on charges including abusing his power and using excessive force against protesters in 2007, but Ukrainian prosecutors rejected a request to extradite him earlier this year.

Friday's decree is "yet another example of employing legal instruments for political persecution," said Nugzar Tsiklauri, an opposition member of parliament.

Dozens of former state officials have been convicted in Georgia since a coalition led by billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili won a parliamentary election in 2012, ending nine years of Saakashvili dominance. His term as president ended in 2013.

Western countries have aired concerns that the new government has used selective justice and political persecution against opponents in the mountainous ex-Soviet republic, which is a pivot of geopolitical rivalry between Russia and the West.

Georgia watched with alarm when Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula last year. Some Georgian officials portrayed the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which flared up later, as an extension of the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.

Georgia has warned Kiev that giving official posts in Ukraine to people facing criminal charges in Georgia could damage bilateral relations.

Erdogan is doing his best to create a real war between NATO and Russia. Anthing to distract from the "ISIS Oil Coverup".

The credibility of NATO has sunk to a level that I have never seen before.  Declaring a "war on ISIS", while simultaneously shipping ISIS oil through Turkey and then buying it at rock bottom prices.

The gas fields off the Gaza and israeli coasts have no market beyond Egypt and israel at this point. But if tensions between Russia and Turkey persist, The Jews could get the Turkish market away from the Russians.

In the meantime, the Jews are making money as a middleman "crude launderer" for the ISIS and Kurdish oil.

Fish & Game officer takes notice of an old guy who brings his boat in off the lake every day with a full cooler of fish each time. Most of the lake's anglers are barely pulling in anything. He decides to follow the old guy the next day to see what's up.  Watching from behind some rushes, the officer sees the old man stop his boat, open his tackle box, and remove a stick of dynamite.  Lighting the dynamite and tossing it out in the water, the old man waits for the explosion, then motors over to the spot and begins netting all the stunned fish. The officer quickly motors over next to the old man, grabs onto his boat and begins yelling at him, reeling off the laws that the old man is breaking by fishing with explosives. After about a minute of this, the old man reaches in his tackle box, pulls out another stick of dynamite, lights it, and throws it in the bottom of the officer's boat. Stunned, the now silent officer is staring at the sputtering stick of dynamite as he hears the old man say 'Boy, you gonna sit there and run your mouth or are you gonna fish?"

The consortium of arbitrary would like the world to believe that Erdogan is some black swan renegade acting of his own violition... doesn't pass the giggle test.  What are NATOs plans when they get involved more heavily is the real question, it's inevitable at this point.  My guess is that there will be a standoff and minor battles in the ME while Eastern Europe and the Balkans will end up in all out war before this is over.

"it wont be long before Russia has to blow something up belonging to Turkey"

Russia has taken measures to punish Turkey: refusal to increase natural gas supplies via the existing pipeline to Turkey (this was before the Russian plane was shot down); sanctions against Turkey's exports; a freezing of hiring of Turks in Russia; hobbling Turkish business in Russia; doubling down on bombing Erdogan's Turkmen allies in Syria; bombing the fleet of tanker trucks that took oil out of Syria for eventual delivery to Turkey; and the announcement that the new Turk Stream pipeline project was being shelved.  But more important, Russian was seen as entitled to share its intel about Erdogan's support of ISIS and Turkey's dealing with ISIS to smuggle oil from Syria.  Also, Putin got to tell the world that Erdogan's son was involved in the Syrian oil trade.  The people of Turkey may have perked up their ears at that one.

The cancelling of Turk Stream may be seen as contrary to Russia's export trade in natural gas.  But I wonder if Turk Stream has already served Russia's purpose by prompting Germany to sign on to a new North Stream line, and by prompting Bulgaria and others to push for Brussels to back off its opposition to South Stream.

It's easy to cherry-pick violent stuff out of both books. The question is, what exactly do the passages mean, what context are they taken in, and are they applicable only to a bygone era, or are they supposed to be timeless (i.e. apply yesterday, today, and in the future).

"The Quran contains at least 109 verses that call Muslims to war with nonbelievers for the sake of Islamic rule.  Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers and kill infidels wherever they may be hiding.  Muslims who do not join the fight are called 'hypocrites' and warned that Allah will send them to Hell if they do not join the slaughter.

Unlike nearly all of the Old Testament verses of violence, the verses of violence in the Quran are mostly open-ended, meaning that they are not restrained by the historical context of the surrounding text (although many Muslims choose to think of them that way).  They are part of the eternal, unchanging word of Allah, and just as relevant or subject to interpretation as anything else in the Quran."

http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/Quran/023-violence.htm

"Each year, thousands of Christian homes and churches are torched or bombed by Muslim mobs, and hundreds of Christians, including dozens of priests, pastors, nuns and other church workers are murdered at the hands of Islamic extremists.  The so-called justification varies, from charges of apostasy or evangelism, to purported "blasphemy" or "insulting" Islam.  Innocent people have even been hacked to death by devout Muslims over cartoons.

Yet, there is little if any violent retaliation from religious Christians to the discrimination, kidnapping, rape, torture, mutilation and murder that is routinely reported from nations with Muslim majorities.  Neither is there any significant deadly terrorism in the name of Jesus, as there is in the stated cause of Allah each and every day.  Muslim clerics in the West do not fear for their safety as do their Christian counterparts.

The "Christian world" and the Islamic world contrast sharply in other ways as well, from the disparate condition of human rights and civil liberties to economic status.  An astonishing 70% of the world's refugees are Muslims -  usually seeking to live in Christian-based countries.

While Western societies take seriously "scandals" such as Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo (where no one has actually been killed), Muslims routinely turn a blind eye to their own horrible atrocities, even those committed explicitly in the name of Allah.  The Muslim world has yet to offer a single apology for the hundreds of millions who were consumed by centuries of relentless Jihad and slavery.

These sharp differences are almost certainly rooted in the underlying religions, which begin with the disparate teachings and examples set by Jesus and Muhammad..."

1. Stay on the topic. What has the moronic action of some stupid atheists have to do with the photoshopped picture of a russian sailor in Bosphorus?
(BTW, branding self as atheist is stupid, as best could be agnostic, as to say, i'm ignorant and i don't know (which is honest), rather to say to know that there is no God (but unknowingly seeing themself as gods).)

2. Old testament verses can not be read out of context and being from 3000 years ago with total different environment and circumstances. Again, what else can be expected from 2 atheist morons who just monkey around?

3. Quran is the #1 terrorists handbook and is from Satan. If you disagree, be my guest, keep your guards down, as moslims will follow the word of Allah and chop your head in love.

Turks are being hated because they took to spread ISLAM, to do the dirty work for arabs and their culture.
If they had stayed on the corrected path of the founder of the modern Republic of Turkey, they would have been accepted as any other nation today.

But no, they have chosen to be part of the ummah instaed being a nation, as they jumped to identify themselves with and defend ISLAM which had almost wiped them off the earth in WW1.

As prophecised in the Bible, the 8th (current moslim brotherhood regime as the new wannabe Ottoman) is the continuation of the 7th beast kingdom (the Ottoman Empire), which had to continue ofter a short space (Ataturk's republic during his living days). The 7 consequent beast kingdoms (babylon, persian, assyrian, egyptian, greek, roman, ottoman) received a deadly head wound (abolishment of caliphate) and now is about to be revived. All these kingdoms have dvelled on the same lands and last 3 of them had Istanbul as their main city.

Nothing happens without the Empire's approval. Or at least nothing as big as this, or the SU-24 shoot down. Turkey is NATO, and acts as an arm of NATO militarily. As an agent of NATO, Turkey has been the key connection point between NATO and it's allied proxy army ISIS/ISIL. The depth of Turkey's connection to ISIS/ISIL is vast, and undeniable. Everything from fuel, to ammunition, to equipment, armed men and hospital services, all this Turkey provides at each border crossing point.

The Washington consensus no longer fears media exposure. It's tame medai across all of North America and Western Europe will maintain the lie for Washington, and where the lie fails, like Turkey's connetion to ISIS, then DOUBT. Doubt is planted by media where proof exists of the NATO / ISIS connection.

Just like MH-17. All real provable evidence shows Kiev shot this plane down. Yet western media has played the Doubt game. Every fact that is provable, has a media counter point claiming facts are not facts unless CNN confirms them.

Turkey is NATO's lead man in the take down of Syria. Expect lots more tension. Because what the western media does not and will nto show you is the terrible beating ISIS and Al-Nusra is taking. Syrian Arab Army and allies are on the offensive, backed by heavy aristrikes on western backed rebel positions. On teh ground, more and more heavy weapons from Russia are entering the battlefield. You do not fight a strike by TOS-1 with rifles or even TOW ATGM. GRAD multiple rocket launchers are being used, yesterday I watch video of ISIS postions being saturated by Syroa GRAD launches. ISIS has never seen this before, they are being hit like they never expected, and it has only just begun. Naturally Obama and NATO are beside themselves with rage. A trusted and well funded ISIS was supposed to conquer Syria in 12 months, instead, ISIS is losing captured ground now every day. Obama can not sit and let his creation die on the battle field. He has options, each one brings us closer to a general war in the Middle East.

When Syrian commandos entered Turkmen rebel territory to rescue the Russian pilot, Russia shut down all communication for Turkey and it's Turkem. Thus no viable response could be organized to teh rescue, and later attack on the Turkmen. "Who ya gonna call?" NOBODY! The radios and phones are out, we are on our own.

Quoting Jack Burton,

"The Washington consensus no longer fears media exposure. It's tame medai across all of North America and Western Europe will maintain the lie for Washington, and where the lie fails, like Turkey's connetion to ISIS, then DOUBT. Doubt is planted by media where proof exists of the NATO / ISIS connection."

Agreed, the USSA/Banksters  control Amerikan, Anglophone and EU media.  However, the rest of the world's media is less controlled, and in particular, the Chinese are in support of the Russian position against Turkey. RT and other Russian Media are also an effective counter voice to the State Department Propaganda Line.

Also, the Main Stream Media liars do not completely control the Internet, and in an earlier post, I linked to a Yahoo article on Turkey's support for ISIS where the vast majority of the commentators were calling out the USSA lies.  Erdogan is now exposed as a criminal supporter of ISIS, and unless he stops buying stolen Syrian Oil,  over time more and more turks and citizens of the EU will learn of this, thus increasing his risk of eventually facing criminal charges in a Turkish court, once he is removed from office.  This may seem like a longshot, but it is a possibility.

In summary, with dissenting voices spreading hard evidence, the USSA and Turkey's position from a political standpoint become less tenable, especially if the USSA plans to place boots on the ground in Syria.

There is only the French carrier in the Eastern Med and that is believed to be on its way to the Gulf. Otherwise known as getting out of the way.

The US carrier in the Med is currently sunning itself off Croatia at the top of the Adriatic. Otherwise known as keeping out of the way.

The have noticed that the Russian Black Sea flagship, currently off Syria in an air defence role, is optimised for anti carrier use, with its supersonic anti-ship missiles. No naval commander will want his carrier anywhere near it.

Russia is in a tough spot.  I don't think there is any easy way to supply a sizable force in Syria without access through the strait.  Russia's ships are also sitting ducks while they transit.  If you had enough of them backed up in one spot waiting to go through, they are very vulnerable to attack. I wouldn't doubt if Erdogan is simply waiting for the right moment to strike.  Those missle cruisers and destroyers could find themselves at the bottom of Davy Jones Locker in short order.  At this point, it isn't going to take much provocation.  Erdogan might pull a false flag and blame it on Russia which would change public opinion in minutes. They look like they are getting ready to fight.  Turkey is moving troops into western Iraq.  I'm sure Putin is going through the scenarios, but first on his mind must be how he will respond to a rapid ground and air blitz across Syira's northern, and eastern borders.  If his air defense systems were knocked out by ground attack, the skies could be filled with attacking enemy aircraft from Turkey, Saudi, Israel?  If those Syrian airfields were destroyed, Putin would have no base of operations.  Obviously, losing Syria would be a political disaster for Putin since we know what a strong image he portrays to the public.  He's a judo master, dumps wife for hot young girlfriend, shoots tigers with trank guns, former KGB agent, rides brown bears bareback, billions in Gazprom stock, and all. Hey what's not to like?  Can we blame him for wanting to protect his corporate wealth?

you should learn how to read maps, instead of repeating MSM  Bullshit.  Russia can resupply via ships sent around Europe and into the Medditeranian. Also, they could cut deals with Iran and Iraq for transit corridors into Syria, initially via the Caspian. Also, there is air transport, albiet very cost prohibitive.

But if it gets to the point where Russian air defenses and fields are destroyed by NATO, I suggest you invest in a bottle of SPF 5000 Sunscreen, and if you live on the east coast of the USSA, scuba gear might also be a good investment.

Sizzurp, one of Obama's top ME advisor Brzezinski is suggesting the same: "Obama should retaliate if Russia doesn't stop attacking U.S. assets. In these rapidly unfolding circumstances the U.S. has only one real option if it is to protect its wider stakes in the region: to convey to Moscow the demand that it cease and desist from military actions that directly affect American assets.  The Russian naval and air presences in Syria are vulnerable, isolated geographically from their homeland," Brzezinski noted. "They could be 'disarmed' if they persist in provoking the US."

This is just a game for the psycopaths.  A million lives here, a trillion spent there, the end justifies the means, I guess.

Wait, what? Turkish provocation? Holding some ships for inspection as a retaliation is hardly a provocation, especially given all that's going on in that part of the world right now. To put it in modern terms, it's merely a way to say to Putin, "we're not a bitch to be pushed around, bitch". Contrary to popular belief on ZeroHedge, Turkey holds all the strategic advantage in this particular spat. One hasty mistake from Russia and its dream of upsetting the balance in the ME is gone.

Russia should just get the show on the road already.

Russia has like 25,000 Tanks.

All Putin has to do is start the engines and onwards to Turkey and Turkey will be steam rolled by mid December.

Or he could just Carpet Cluster Fuck the Shit out Ankara.

Turkey has less than like 4000 Armored vehicles.

Russias Military is like 80% +++ bigger than Turkey.

Nato is incompetent and all the Nato nations are weak/don't have the organizational skills to mount any kind of defense / retaliation.

This will escalate for sure, I think Turkey better learn some humility before its too late for them, they are completely out matched, the only reason they can even pull stuff like this off is because Russia doesn't really consider them a threat so they are just trotting about without really being careful, Turkey would do well not to awake the sleeping bear.

Turkey only has 60 or so nuclear warheads on lease from the U.S., all Russia has to do is cluster fuck Turkeys airbases and they are out of the game in short order.... they wont even get one off the chain.

TO think that the U.S. trusts an Islamic State like Turkey with 60-70 nuclear warheads lol......... our Government is fucking brain dead.

I dont even understand why Turkey is in NATO, they should be expelled and invaded.

SA-18 is a surface-to-air missile, it's unusable against ground based or floating targets. Besides, ships got machine guns for such situations, and AK-630 is a 30 mm canon which can engage floating, low-flying and stationary threats. It still makes no sense to me to stand on a deck with a manpad that if fired would blow the head off your shipmate standing in front of you.

hmm

to stand on a deck with a manpad that if fired would blow the head off your shipmate standing in front of you.

Maybe belowdecks radar hasn't spotted any incoming, and warned the sailor to get his head out of the way.

It's sad to have to say these words ...

WHO really stands to gain from a war here - Russia versus NATO?  Forget politics.  Think money.  Who stands to profit??   Anyone who has taken a major LONG position in Gold, and a major SHORT position on the Dow. That person would make a huge profit now - from a world crisis.  A huge profit. Maybe it's all about the money.

Oh Fuck Off, WB could do a far more believable photoshop job than that. Why is a Russian Seaman wearing a long black coat and balaclava, and why is he pointing a rocket launcher at the back of his mates head?

When Rita gets in to work on Monday morning, somebody's getting the sack.

If you save the picture then enlarge it, just to the left of that guy, you can see Osama Bin Laden giving the 'V' sign.

Poland is starting to look like the closest thing to Turkey that NATO has going in Eastern Europe and that maybe something to watch.  The entire area of the old Eastern Block is resisting taking any refugees, they have no tolerance for Muslims, are very suspicious about what is taking place and the population seems to be in absolute cohesive agreement that they will not be taking ISIS evacuees mixed with refugees, yet Poland has taken a leadership role in pushing for their acceptance against everyones wishes.  Poland is also discussing asking NATO to give them nuclear arms to counter North Korea (WTH).

There has also been a large NATO buildup in the east which Poland is the primary cheerleader for, troop movements, army exercizes (one quite large) and navy exercizes that began in 2014 which breach a Russian cooperation agreement.  No massive troop movements as of yet but if they build the permanant bases, that they feel they need all of the sudden, that could happen at a moments notice.

NYT is taking the stance that they are xenophobic because they are 98% white but wouldn't their history have something to do with their suspicions as well?  http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/13/world/europe/eastern-europe-migrant-refugee-crisis.html

Reminds me of my  favorite Polish Military jokes:

~2 Polish firing squad, stands in a circle. ~3 New Polish navy has glass bottom boats, to see to the old Polish navy. ~5 Polish kamikaze flew 48 successful missions. ~7 Q. Why don't polish women use vibrators? A. It chips their teeth. ~8 Q. How do you sink a polish battleship? A. Put it in water. ~9 Q: Have you seen the polish mine detector. A1: Put you fingers in your ears and start stamping the ground with your foot. A2: Start backing up and waving the detector in front of you.

Yes, their history is the history of the West which is resistance to Muslim armies.  The difference is only that the Poles have bothered to teach this history.  Both Russia and Poland have had occupying armies of Islam in the deep past.

But the problem is larger than just Islam though that is the most understated of issues today.  The other side of this mess, this ridiculous conflict between Russia and Western NATO countries, is just the product of old patterns of thinking.  NATO and the USA have taken steps that only make sense if you think of Russia as still being Communist.  For what else is the East-West divide based in??

And Russia has also been engaged in perpetuating this dead paradigm.  Why did Russia use hard power in Ukraine and not let their obvious convergent interests work its magic over time?

Why did the USA and EU folks stoke the fire instead of looking for the EU and Russia to converge themselves.

Yes, there are Russian national interests at stake.  But when you accept that the ideological divide is GONE then none of what we see makes sense except on a personal-power/personality basis.  This is a foolish basis for policy.  Russia is a European power.  That is written in history and culture.  Russia should be directing and forming EU policies from within, not playing odd man out.

And when Russia takes its certain roll in saving the EU from itself, when Putin injects common sense and common values into the formation of EU policy, then Turkey will necessarily be forced out of NATO and treated as the pariah that it is.

2017 and a new US Presidency is our next best opportunity to make this convergence of common values happen.
