Malaysia Is Hunting For Mystery Owner Who Abandoned Three Boeing 747 On Its Airport

Tyler Durden's picture

One year ago, someone quietly parked their three Boeing 747-200F (which as shown on the image below have no identifiable insignia) at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia and since then has decided - for reasons unknown - to forget all about them.

However, in the meantime, the airplanes have been raking up landing, parking and other charges and now the airport wants to not only find the owner, but to get paid.

Boeing no longer makes the 747-200, but the more modern 747-8 Freighter version is the company’s second-most expensive plane, with a list price of $379.1 million.

As CNN reports, officials from Malaysia Airports Holdings eager to clear the massive clutter and collect their unpaid invoices, took out ads in Malaysia's The Star and Sin Chew Daily newspapers asking for the owner to please come get their planes. It has given the "mysterious" owner a 14-day ultimatum in which to collect his multi-ton "lost and found" or else the planes would be impounded, sold or "disposed of":

"If you fail to collect the aircraft within 14 days of the date of this notice, we reserve the right to sell or otherwise dispose of the aircraft pursuant to the Civil Aviation Regulations 1996 and use the money raised to set off any expenses and debt due to us under the said regulations."

"The giving of such notice by way of advertisement is a common and reasonable step in the process of debt recovery especially in cases where the company concerned has ceased operations and is a foreign entity whereby exhaustive steps undertaken to find a contact person have not been successful," Malaysia Airports said in a statement.

Malaysia Airports general manager Zainol Mohd Isa told CNN the aircraft have been parked at KLIA for more than a year, having been abandoned at different times. It's not clear who now bears responsibility for the aircraft and any related charges.

"They've yet to pay the parking fee -- where do we send the bill?" Isa said.

But if one has the registration number of the planes, how can one not track down the owner? That is a question we asked, especially since the registration numbers are readily available, TF-ARN, TF-ARH, TF-ARM, yet what emerges is that despite several aviation databases listing the Boeings as belonging to leasing firm Air Atlanta Icelandic, that company says it sold them in 2008.  Since then the aircraft appear to have changed hands several times, and the current owner is unknown..

Isa said that storage space wasn't a problem at the airport, adding that the three Boeings are the only aircraft currently abandoned there.

Even more surprising is an update from Bloomberg according to which, the general manager has been in communication with the so-called owner, "but they have not been responding to take away the aircraft. That’s why we go through this process to legalize whatever actions we want to take,” Zainol said by phone Tuesday. “We want to clear the area, we want to utilize our parking bay.”

And while one wonders just who would simply park their airplane and forget it for over a year (or rather just how insolvent this party must be), more questions emerge: how is it possible that there is no clear ownership title for something as massive and, well, heavy as an airplane? Was Linda Green also robosigning aircraft leases? And more importantly, just why would someone be willing to risk confiscation of their airplane, unless of course, the debt on the machine is far greater than the equity value which makes them worthless to the current "owner."

Finally, one can't ignore the irony that Malaysia, which itself "misplaced" one of its own aircraft under far more tragic circumstances and has still be unable to find the disappeared MH370, is the country now engaged in this reverse inquiry. And perhaps just as curious is that it is Malaysia Airlines itself which is now eager to make its own fleet of A380, acquired under far more pleasant times, disappear by either selling or leasing them to some other greater fool.

I am calling bullshit on this.

Airplanes are not like cars. How many companies/people buy planes a year? I imagine the number is relatively low, compared to say trains, which municipalities across the world buy. Certainly they have something akin to an automobiles VIN numbers. Dont they log the buyer of each plane? Sure, it could have been resold, but again how many companies/people can afford that?

Isnt there some organization like the DMV for airplanes that you must register your plane with?

Seems too crazy for this to be possible.

Yep, the fact that "Air Atlanta Icelandic" registered and then sold the planes, but cannot say who they sold them to, means that to all intents and purposes they still own them because it was their responsibility to alter the register.

A totally bizarrre story though, hundreds of millions of pounds worth of aircraft appear to be worthless, that could only happen in a dysfunctional economy.

Same thing as Greeks and shipping flags, Singapore + warehouses and Hong Kong for Artifacts. Some countries just have certain "economic advantages" for trade and opportunity, est. 1772. If History channel or a CNBC producer is following the thread, I'd love to see a "storage wars" involving shady terminals around the world. Some of the shit that makes it to lockup would rival "Gone in 60 seconds".

Closer to 60,000 gallons, but nice try.  Airworthiness is likely the issue.  Without the paperwork, the planes are basically worthless.

It might sound odd for something so magnificent, but old fuel-guzzler aircraft can be worth as much as a cheese sandwich.  It comes down to freight rates and charter rates, which probably aren't peaking right now considering the state of the global economy.  To fly them, you need to have a charter rate high enough to pay for the kerosene.

Those planes are costly junk now, worth nowhere near the cost it would take to bail them out and make them air-worthy.  It's hard even to tow them off the airport, where some local aluminum recyclers could get to work.

I suspect all these aircraft are due for the very expensive "D" maintainence check and the 'owner' decided it wasn't worth it.

"Because of the nature and the cost of such a check, most airlines — especially those with a large fleet — have to plan D checks for their aircraft years in advance. Often, older aircraft being phased out of a particular airline's fleet are either stored or scrapped upon reaching their next D check, due to the high costs involved in comparison to the aircraft's value."

You are probably right.  If you have ever priced used jet aircraft, the time for the next maintenance is a big, big deal.  Regulations says that after so many hours, engines have to be rebuilt, various parts changed, etc.  Some maintance is hour based and some is cycle based.  You can find some jets that are just due for a major overhaul that sell for less, sometimes much less, than the cost of the overhaul.  So then you take some old, fuel inefficient jet that needs millions of work before it is allowed to fly and probably needs an new interior as well and you get to the point where it is better off junked.  Then let them try to sell it without the logbook - planes are worthless.

The Cape Town treaty covers mobile assets: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Town_Treaty , I did notice that Malaysia is a signatory.  For about $USD30 to do a search provided you have the Manufactures Serial Number (MSN) of the equipment ( https://www.internationalregistry.aero/ir-web/ ).  Note this is not just about airframes, but also engines and APU's.  Had a poke around some airframes as while ago following the financials of an operator.  Interesting to see an how an aircraft can commercialized multiple ways, by component. you guys all joke but sometimes when you're abroad for business you pick up a few things. Once faced with the reality of getting them back to the motherland its sometimes easier to just leave them behind. I know its irresponsible but dont forget that time is money. And three 747-200F only cost around 120 million.

Yes, easily done.

The hard part is to find out who is now responsible for AAI's debts, what seizable assets they own, and getting a legally believable threat of seizure against those assets.

I dont know who bought them from Atlanta.

Two of those 747 are passenger planes and one is for cargo transport.

Those planes are 30 years old.  TF-ARH has not been registered in Iceland since 2011 and the other 2 since 2012.

Atlanta was flying those planes to Malasia until 2010.

So what airpoort just lets you land your airplanes, and then park them, without getting so much as a name? I cant figure out if these guys are just incompetent or super shady.  Honestly, it seems like some sort of ploy to "legally" get these airplanes into some third party's hands without a direct paper trail.  Ooopps.. we "forgot" who the original owner of these are. But since you paid us cash at auction you're the new owner mister.... Calvin Irwin Anderson was it?

Either that or it is a modern version of the scene from Pirates of the Carribean where Capt. Sparrow pays off the dockmaster to forget his name,

Big four engine aircraft will soon be a thing of the past. Boeing's 777 and the new Airbus 350 are game changers. Why put fuel through four when you can do the same with two?

Sales of the 747 and A380 are tanking. The 340 was here...... and it's gone.

These are old 200's at that. High by-pass engines, yes..... FADEC controlled, no. FADEC is computer controlled for all aspects of flight. It controls fuel along with such minor things as blade tip to case clearance. A FADEC engine is more efficiant at giving equal power with less fuel burn.

Gut these for their parts and hack-um up.
