Playing Chess With Putin

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Nick Giambruno via InternationalMan.com,

“What’s it like playing chess with Obama?” asks a top aid of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Putin replies, “It’s like playing chess with a pigeon. First it knocks over all the pieces, then it shits on the board, and finally it struts around like it won.”

Now, Putin hasn’t actually said this on record. It’s just a popular joke circulating in Russia.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if he really did say it. It’s not far off base.

Putin outmaneuvered the West in Ukraine and most recently in Syria. Most importantly, he has outflanked Western sanctions through increased financial and economic cooperation with China and other Eurasian powers.

No matter what happens in the West, Russia’s recent power plays are creating tectonic shifts in geopolitics. This could be the largest shift in global power since World War II.

Ultimately, this could threaten the U.S. dollar’s role as the world’s premier reserve currency. That would have huge negative implications for your personal freedom and financial prosperity.

Will Russia End the Unipolar World?

Actually, it’s not just Russia we have to watch. China, Iran, and other Eurasian powers are working with Russia on an ambitious goal. They’re trying to end U.S. dominance in global trade, finance, and military power.

These countries want to create what Russian officials call a “multipolar world.” It would replace the unipolar world that’s existed since the early 1990s, when the Soviet Union collapsed. The U.S. has been the world’s sole superpower ever since.

In short, Russia and its partners want to completely redraw the lines of global power. Here’s how they’re doing it…

First, there’s China’s New Silk Road. It’s the biggest and most comprehensive infrastructure project in all of human history. The plan is to link Asia to Europe via modern land transit corridors.

The project includes high-speed rail lines, modern highways, fiber optic cables, energy pipelines, seaports, and airports. Much of this new infrastructure will flow through Russia.

If everything goes as planned, the New Silk Road will be a reality by 2025.

This will free Russia, China, Iran, and others from dependence on ocean transport. At that point, control of the high seas, which the U.S. has had for many decades, won’t be nearly as important.

In addition to the New Silk Road, a set of interlocking international organizations is emerging. These new organizations are supporting Russia’s plans for a multipolar world.

Trade - The Eurasian Economic Union

The Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) is a Russian-led trading bloc.

The EEU allows for free movement of goods, services, money, and people through Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia. It’s gradually expanding as countries along the New Silk Road remove trade barriers.

Security - The Shanghai Cooperation Organization

In the military and security realm, there’s the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). It could become a NATO of the East.

Current members include Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan will join by 2016. Iran is also likely to join in the future.

A Parallel International Financial System

China’s Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will provide funding for international infrastructure projects. It’s an alternative to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, which are both dominated by the U.S.

The BRICS countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa - all support Russia’s goal of creating a multipolar world. Like the AIIB, the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) is an international financial institution based in China. It’s another alternative to the IMF and World Bank.

The NDB and AIIB will complement, not compete with, each other in financing New Silk Road projects. The NDB will also finance infrastructure projects in Africa and South America.

It’s important to note that the NDB will use members’ national currencies, not the U.S. dollar. It won’t depend on U.S.-controlled institutions for anything. This reduces the NDB’s exposure to U.S. pressure.

The BRICS countries are also looking to build an alternative to SWIFT, the major international payments system.

SWIFT is truly essential to the current international financial system. Without it, it’s nearly impossible to move money from a bank in country A to a bank in country B.

The U.S. kicked Iran out of SWIFT in 2012. This crippled Iran’s international trade. It also showed that the U.S. could use SWIFT as a political weapon. The BRICS countries want their own system so they can neutralize that power.

AIIB, NDB, and the potential SWIFT alternative are the seeds of a parallel international financial system. Together, they will reduce the importance and demand for U.S. dollars.

What it Means for You

Today, most international trade is done in U.S. dollars. When one country wants to trade with another, it almost always has to buy U.S. dollars on the foreign exchange market first. This creates demand for U.S. dollars - much more than there would be otherwise. That boosts the value of the dollar.

Imagine how much this arrangement props up the U.S. dollar. It’s incredible.

This arrangement has allowed the U.S. government (and U.S. citizens) to live way beyond its means for decades. It also gives the U.S. unchecked geopolitical leverage. The U.S. could exclude virtually any country from the U.S. dollar-based financial system…and by extension the vast majority of international trade.

The U.S. takes this unique position for granted. But it will disappear once the dollar loses its premier status.

This will likely be the tipping point…

Afterward, the U.S. government will be desperate enough to implement capital controls, people controls, nationalization of retirement savings, and other forms of wealth confiscation.

It would be wise to prepare for the economic and sociopolitical fallout while you still can. Expect bigger government, less freedom, shrinking prosperity…and possibly worse.

It’s probably not going to happen tomorrow. But it’s clear where the bankrupt governments of the U.S. and most of the West are headed.

Once the dollar loses its status as the world’s premier reserve currency, you will have few, if any options, to protect yourself.

This is why it’s essential to act before that happens.

If Putin continues to outmaneuver the U.S. on the geopolitical chessboard, the dollar could collapse sooner rather than later.

The sad truth is, most people have no idea how bad things could get, let alone how to prepare…

There are straightforward steps you can start taking today to protect your savings and yourself. You don’t have to be on the losing team in this high-stakes chess match with Putin.

This just-released video will show you where to begin. Click here to watch it now.

But, on a more somber note, I have to confess that even if this 'mulit-polar' world economic system does fulfill itself, and, therefore, should necessarily take on the appearance of some image of success, some visual negation of reality, it would only be a better organization for industiral-poltical forces and, hence, not a more efficient organization of humanness. It will be as myopic an intent as history has provided the scores of other examples for us to behold. Unfortunatley, that long path, affectionately known to the constructers as The New Silk Road, that shall connect the continents and their contents, will become, in time, less of a Silk Road and more of a steel leviathon that is controlled by a Spectacular Government and manned by Homo spectator at the tolling of the economy. It will be targeted as a symbol; it will be sought as a means to truncate a peculiar injustice.

Putin's smarter than that dipshit Stalin.  He only wants the reconstitued USSR to ally itself with productive, up-and-coming countries this time.  Bulgaria and Yugoslavia, for instance, are not on his menu.  Iran, China?  Hell yeah, he'll line up with them every day and twice on Sunday.  He may not like them and definitely doesn't want to take them over politically or militarily, but he knows how to form an alliance built on a real foundation.

I think he laughs himself to sleep every night wondering how he ever got so lucky to have a guy like Obama in the WH.

The reason that there are not more roads, railroads etc between Russia and China is because Russia doesn't want to make it easier for the Chinese to invade them.

There is a lot of "bad blood" between Russia and China. Specially the Chinese who had been fu.ked by the Russians innumerable times.

Very believable. When the Wehrmacht was rolling east, the withdrawing Russkies would mine prominent public buildings (city hall etc.); once the krauts overran the town and set up their HQ, the mines would be detonated. Of course, this only worked the first few times it was done....

You are right about not getting any pensions. I work for Sacramento County in Cal, in on the CALPERS system. I saw someone here post that Fidelity Investments, the brokerage company they use, on Dec. 1 just pulled most of their money out of the stock market and into government bonds and securities - and did not give people the chance to decide what they wanted for themselves. When the crash happens, all that money is as good as gone. So you will be far from the only one affected.

Russia has a long term problem.   Their population is decreasing.

In the past 25 years (since 1990) there has only been two years with a (slight) positive population growth, 2013 and 2014.  Overall their population is down since 1991 from 149 million to 143 million today.

A static population is good for long term sustainability, but it's not economically prosperous.

I expect that this new silk road is also going to bring in more population from Asia.

Note that Asians in Russia is nothing new.   Countries like Kazakhstan and their neighbours, once part of the Soviet Union, are all asian.    But now the primary language is Russian becasue of the former USSR.

This is a popular Western myth that Russia is dying out:-) It is not true. The population of Russia is increasing and is now actually 146 million, not just 143 as you say. Of course, part of that is the addition of Crimeans (Christian Russians) and a huge influx of Ukranian immigrants (also Russian-speaking Christians). But the birth rate itself is also gradually increasing, even if it is true that more will need to be done.

And if you speak about Kazakhstan, these people are racially Asian, but Russian in spirit. They consider themselves Russian, they speak Russian and their culture is Russian. Westerners usually think that being Russian means being white, but that is not quite true. There are many Asians in Russia, who have lived there for centuries and they consider themselves Russian and will defend Russia against any enemies. Russians would tell you that being Russian does not mean to be white, but to have the "Russian spirit." These are for example Buryats, who are also proud Russians:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpnyYNkveBQ

And there are more and more immigrants in Russia, the difference with Europe is that the immigrants in Russia are from ex-Soviet countries and they speak Russian and share Russian culture. As for "more population coming from Asia" - not really. Russia does not accept almost any immigrants from the "non-Russian world", which means people from outside of the former Soviet Union. They have enough workers and immigrants just from the Soviet countries.

The Dollar losing reserve status would be a long-term benefit to the average American.  Currently the wad of cash in your pocket varies wildly based off of factors far beyond domestic control.  China needs to buy oil? They buy a bunch of Dollars and Joe's dollars suddenly jump in value!  Sounds great until you realize that Joe's employer cuts his wages (or more likely, doesn't give him a raise) because those Dollars cost his company much more. That is what has been happening to us. Our currency is so expensive companies can't afford to pay domestic employees more of it.  So poor Joe's latest paycheck may be worth more, but his next one will be adjusted accordingly.  It doesn't matter what the price of bread, housing, or gasoline is; those are not Joe's employers concern. The price they pay for those dollars is.

Not only that, but once the end receiver of those trade Dollars has them, they have to invest them somewhere. That "somewhere" is in the US mainland. Can't afford rent? That's because the holders of those Dollars had to park them in real estate, because no other sector can soak up millions (or billions) of US Dollars while staying liquid enough to cash out when needed.  You say it's crazy that the Chinese buy broom closets in Manhattan for millions of Dollars, but what other choice do they have? There isn't enough physical gold to soak that money up.

Believe it or not the Federal Reserve doesn't want the Dollar as reserve currency either.  It wrecks havoc with their planning because they have no direct control over it. The problem is there is currently no other currency with the backing of a (mostly) Rule-of-Law supporting country where you can actually buy assets as a foreign national and not have to worry about it being seized.

No, it means an end to your freedom as America dissolves into a police state with the middle class only a distant memory.

What part do you not agree with?  Americans will lose their personal freedoms as ensuing financial economy collapses and a police state is formally installed.  The dollar would lose a huge part of its value as it ceases to be the global reserve currency, thus throwing your wealth holdings, if any, into a nosedive and making imports (which is just about everything in America) much more expensive and driving up your costs of living, and you are left with no middle class and a nobility that exercises its power over you by taking your son's new bride and fucking her on her first night of marriage.  Get used to the idea - its coming.

If government was inside the Constitution, most of the sources of funding for the academic fifth column and all of the various groups sucking off the public tit would disappear.

No need to fight them, just expose them to reality. Reality is the best argument.

Looks weak? He is weak. He is just a figurehead with the military industrial complex pulling the strings. That is why America is doomed. The political system has been made into a sideshow while the MIC dictates the real policiy and its all to create advantages for them. Putin however is answerable to the Russian public and acts in their best interests. Paradoxically the USA is a totalitarian state while Russia  is a less than perfect democracy.

Mr. Putin is spending a LOT of money with his ongoing wars in the Ukraine and Syria.  The daily "Glamor Show of Russian Weapons" in the news media is costing Russian citizens a lot of money.  Right now, Putin is not getting any financial returns to pay back the expenditures.  In fact, he is being drawn into a commitment that's getting more and more expensive each week.  This is no simple game for Russia. The Russians have a big need to increase their income from oil revenues.  It's a strategy that they are forced to play.

How much did the US spend on the Iraq and Afghanistan war?

How long was the US in these countries?

How about the bags of cash that disappeared in Iraq?

Obama gave his Islamic brothers essentially $500 million in equipment to ISIS. Even surface to air missiles.

I'm not brainwashed by the new libertarian russian press, every country and section of the earth has a say in how they make money and how to play their cards, that will be the outcome here. A lot of awesomeness (for those who have been shit on their whole lives and know how to be aware enough of their surroundings to defend themself) and shit for those who won't participate in world affairs or let other people have a better lifestyle for a change.

The old man was Kruschev. The young man was Kennedy, assassinated soon afterwards.

The best money out there is to buy into selected Russian industries. Then arrange a discount for exports. Convert product by getting euro certifcation. Then start printing money.

Not all industries are suitable for such purpose as Russian manufacturing is not tip top. But for some industrial goods, they have very good techniques.

I have seen some nano refining technologies and gas processing technologies among many others. Western money is pouring into them quietly while they let their Governments officially sanction Russian business.

Very true. The U.S. has had it too easy for decades. It amounts to most of the world subsidising the U.S. for it's living standard, ability to finance wars, cheap fuel, etc. When the global financial collapse happens, the U.S. will be the one country most affected.

this article is misleading in many ways but i will highlight two points related to USD strength issues

1) does not matter which currency parties trade in. what matters is in which currency countries keep their reserves. Most keep reserves in dollars because US can force your business partners to accept dollar payments

2) exchage rate of the dollar is supported by most debts beeing nominated in dollars and US being able to force repayment of debts (so borrowers have to work to buy dollars to return their debts)

Does this mean I should breed with my Russian wife again?  Putin owes me 10K already but that won't happen.  Actually he owes me 20K because there are two kids.

Not a kopeck out of this fucking guy.  What a dickhead.  I bred her twice and not a dime for it.  What the hell?  Now there are two children around here who are half Russian that ruin things on a daily basis.  Where is my recompense?

I won't get paid but it is fun to have Manipuflation/Russian cross breed children.  I Love them.

Same boat here, 2 girls.  My wife has said for a long time that people there simply cannot afford 2 children.  This may boost their rate a bit.  And I really doubt he's gonna send us cash.  A Russian mother just gives our kids the possibility of becoming Russian someday (unless yours was born there).  Mine were born here in Sask.

You are right on.  Girls are good.  Boys are destructive.  I guess I was too.  Mine were born here in the U.S..  You are correct that we have an option for our children that most people do not have.  I insist on the speaking of Russian in this household even though I am not so good at it.  In fact, I really suck at speaking Russian.  The kids can speak it though.

Having a Russian wife is a very good thing.  I do not look at other women.  Once you have a Russian woman you know what is going on because she will tell you to fuck off.  Especially if you have been married to her for 12 years!!!:-)
