As YouGov reports, a majority of Americans say that they view Islam unfavorably, and even Democrats are almost twice as likely to view Islam negatively than positively.
One week ago the United States saw the deadliest terrorist attack it has seen since 9/11, after 14 people were killed in San Bernadino by Syed Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik. In the wake of the attack Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took his most aggressively anti-Muslim stance so far by calling for Muslims to be barred from entry into the United States. Though the United States has millions of Muslims, anti-Muslim sentiment has become increasingly common in public discourse.
YouGov/HuffPost's latest research shows that most Americans have an unfavorable opinion of Islam. 58% of Americans have an unfavorable opinion of Islam, and just over a third (35%) say that they have a 'very unfavorable' opinion of the religion. Only 17% of Americans view it positively. Democrats (27%) are the most likely to have a favorable opinion of Islam, but even they tend to say that they view Islam negatively. Among independents (58%) and Republicans (75%) most people have a negative view of Islam.
Under-30s (45%) are the least likely to have unfavorable opinions of Islam, but 65% of over-65s view Islam unfavorably.
So, is Trump merely reflective of the real American "values"?
Finally, here is Patrick Buchanan, of Buchanan.org, explaining the odd hypocrisy in the establishment's unhinged response to Trumps' call:
Calling for a moratorium on Muslim immigration “until our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is going on,” Donald Trump this week ignited a firestorm of historic proportions.
As all the old hate words — xenophobe, racist, bigot — have lost their electric charge from overuse, and Trump was being called a fascist demagogue and compared to Hitler and Mussolini.
The establishment seemed to have become unhinged.
Why the hysteria? Comes the reply: Trump’s call for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration tramples all over “American values” and everything we stand for, including the Constitution.
But is this really true?
The Constitution protects freedom of religion for U.S. citizens. But citizens of foreign lands have no constitutional right to migrate. And federal law gives a president broad powers in deciding who comes and who does not, especially in wartime.
In 1924, Congress restricted immigration from Asia, reduced the numbers coming from southern and Central Europe, and produced a 40-year moratorium on most immigration into the United States.
Its authors and President Coolidge wanted ours to remain a nation whose primary religious and ethnic ties were to Europe, not Africa or Asia.
Under FDR, Truman and JFK, this was the law of the land.
Did this represent 40 years of fascism?
Why might Trump want a moratorium on Muslim immigration?
- Reason one: terrorism. The 9/11 terrorists were Muslim, as were the shoe and underwear bombers on those planes, the Fort Hood shooter, the Times Square bomber and the San Bernardino killers. And as San Bernardino showed again, Islamist terrorists are exploiting our liberal immigration policies to come here and kill us. Thus, a pause, a timeout on immigration from Muslim countries, until we fix the problem, would seem to be simple common sense.
- Second, Muslims are clearly more susceptible to the siren call of terrorism, and more likely to be radicalized on the Internet and in mosques than are Christians at church or Jews at synagogue. Which is why we monitor mosques more closely than cathedrals.
- Third, according to Harvard’s late Samuel Huntington, a “clash of civilizations” is coming between the West and the Islamic world. Other scholars somberly concur. But if such a conflict is in the cards, how many more millions of devout Muslims do we want inside the gates?
Set aside al-Qaida, ISIS and their sympathizers. Among the 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide are untold millions of followers of the Prophet who pray for the coming of a day when sharia is universal and the infidels, i.e., everyone else, are either converted or subjugated.
In nations where Muslims are already huge majorities, where are the Jews? Where have all the Christians gone?
With ethnic and sectarian wars raging in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Yemen, Libya, Nigeria and Somalia, why would we bring into our own country people from all sides of these murderous conflicts?
Many European nations — Germans, French, Swedes, Brits — appear to regret having thrown open their doors to immigrants and refugees from the Islamic world, who have now formed unassimilated clusters and enclaves inside their countries.
Ought we not explore why, before we continue down this road?
In some countries of the Muslim world, Americans who embrace “Hollywood values” regarding abortion, adultery and homosexuality, can get their heads chopped off as quickly as converts to Christianity.

Trump’s surge this week, in the teeth of universal denunciation, suggests that a large slice of America agrees with his indictment — that our political-media establishment is dumb as a box of rocks and leading us down a path to national suicide.
Trump’s success tells us that the American people really do not celebrate “globalization.” They think our negotiators got snookered out of the most magnificent industrial machine ever built, which once guaranteed our workers the highest standard of living on earth.
They don’t want open borders or mass immigration. They want people here illegally to be sent back, the borders secured, and a moratorium imposed on Muslim immigration until we fix the broken system.
As for the establishment, they are saying pretty much what The Donald is saying. To paraphrase Oliver Cromwell’s speech to the Rump Parliament: You have sat here too long for any good you have done here. In the name of God, go!

The difference, Victor, is that we in the West believe in what is called The Civil Society. Muslims generally do not. They have merged religion and government into one in their culture. It is indeed a Clash of Civilizations as Theocracy and the Civil Society are incompatible by definition. It has little to do with displacing people. Our government has no business bringing more Muslims into this country. Aside from everything else, the last thing we need is another damn interest group we have to cater and cow-tow to. Even now, the Establishment sucks up to those CAIR ass holes. CAIR seems to have known the San Bernardino couple were potential terrorists but sure didn't forewarn anyone. They need to be charged under the racketeering statute as a criminal enterprise.
The muslims I know have stated that the Western system of government presents is, in general, not incompatible with sharia law with some relatively minor alterations. To my knowledge (and certainly I concede that I might be incorrect), no moderate muslim living today in Western countries would consider overthrowing that country's government to establish a sharia theocracy. A harsh (and invalid) interpretation of sharia is implemented by the pseudo-muslims, the Wahhabis (whose roots are actually from Donmeh Jews, not real Arab muslims!). Western influence and money has provided the seeds of growth for this extremeist view, leading many honest young muslims down the wrong path. There is no 'Clash of Civilisations'. There never was one. It is all fake. It is Western/Israeli contrived. The muslims are just as much victims as are we of these evil people who spread poison and set people against each other.
Victor, I have spent close to 15 years working on and off in Muslim countries from Morocco to Pakistan. One thing for sure I have learned is that you cannot believe them when they talk about the moderate face of Islam and so forth. When push comes to shove they will always go with the Islamic way. Their assertiveness is directly related to their proportion of the population.

I think your premise is wrong because if it were true, mainstream Muslims would be as upset about radical Muslims as us non-Muslims are and they are not. They would rally behind Trump's comments like many non-Muslims. So your premise holds no water. It is false. Regular Muslims never say shit about extreme ones. They are like deer in the headlights.
White Europeans and their descendents are rapidly shrinking in numbers while Muslims are expanding and replacing us. White people have long been the minority globally, but now we're becoming the minority in the countries that were traditionally our own (Europe & North America). We have indoctrinated ourselves to stop having children (feminism, etc) and to gleefully accept other cultures overrunning, outbreeding, and replacing our own (multiculturalism, "diversity").
Here's what's really happening in the world: our culture is tremendously unhealthy. The Muslims have a healthy culture. They are on the attack here and whether they use violence or not is only superficially important. We must decide whether to defend ourselves or to be "politically correct" and commit cultural suicide.
It appears that the silent majority of whites and Europeans still want to defend themselves, but almost all of our leaders, vocal minorities, liberals, globalists, etc, want to destroy our culture. The way to defend ourselves is to reinstate our borders and focus on rebuilding our own culture to a healthy state. I believe that's more-or-less what Trump is talking about doing (temporarily closing our border, making America great again), but it's not yet known whether he's actually concerned about protecting our culture, or only about protecting us from physical violence. He has to be calculated in what he says and reveals.

I thought I was in charge of my culture. So I took my kid out of school 7th grade and we we discussed a bunch of books we both read and he spent his time playing games and watching youtube. Education for him was a way of keeping his mind active.
As a result, he is 4 years ahead of his contemporaries in maturity and getting on with an adult life, is better educated than any of them, just doesn't have credentials.
If I waited for someone to save me, he would be like everyone else.
We don't need a savior, we need far less government, not more. I do not hear Trump promising to repeal decades of laws.

He has the money to do it. It will might cost him $100 million up to the elections. But compared to other campaign costs I reckon that this would be a rather modest investment.

Working class Democrats would probably benefit tremendously from drastically reduced immigration of Mexicans. Trump can quote what American blue collar trade unions said in the 1970s in order to convince people that there is a connection between supply and demand in the labour market. A few years ago I saw a segment in an American or British (BBC) newscast about some American Mexicans who were campaigning against further Mexican immigration on the theme “we are the victims”. If Trump shows some Mexicans to the electorate that say “OK, we find Trump´s comments on Mexicans offensive but we are still going to vote for him because our economy will benefit from his immigration policy” he will have a very powerful means to make people understand that the supply of labour actually affects wages and unemployment. Today, a very large chunk of the electorate in the US and Europe doesn´t understand that. If the big media and the politicians say that there is no connection between supply and demand in the labour market most people are going to believe that.
I also suspect that Trump´s attitude may give the impression that he is less statesmanlike than other candidates. He may be regarded as a political clown who you can´t take seriously. Maybe he should say that he will be more statesmanlike in the White House but that he is going to be himself during the campaign. Perhaps he should choose a potentially more statesmanlike running mate which gives the impression that he or she knows what he/she is talking about. Perhaps an economist which share Trump´s views on how the economy works.
It seems as if mainstream media tries to portray Trump as an extremist. He may stand out as offensive in some respects. But in reality he is not more extreme than the trade unions which in the 1970s said that the immigration of Mexicans should be reduced. His comments on Muslims may also give an “extremist” impression. But how would Trump´s ideas affect Muslims all round the world compared to Obama/Bush rule? Would American Muslims suffer under Trump rule? I doubt it. Would the privacy of American Muslims be harmed more by Trump? I doubt it. I also think that it to some extent makes sense for the US to ban immigration of Muslims temporarily since the American foreign policy probably is very offensive to many Muslims. I doubt that a ban would reduce the risk for terrorist attacks significantly. Nor would the labour market be affected to a substantial extent since the immigration of Muslims is rather small compared to other countries. But I agree that Trump would be bad for a Pakistani software engineer who wants a H-1B visa, just like Trump would be bad for Mexican illegal immigrants. Perhaps the underlying intention of Trump´s proposal to introduce a temporary ban on Muslim immigration is to prevent others from comparing his policy on Mexicans with immigration of potential Muslim terrorists by saying “hey, why doesn´t Trump want to prevent immigration of potential terrorists but rather immigration of law-abiding, decent Mexicans?”.
So far, I also think that is unfair to compare Trump with dedicated anti-Islamic European politicians like Geert Wilders. Trump doesn´t seem to want to interfere with how Muslims are leading their life in the US. He doesn´t oppose the religion Islam as far as I understand. Everybody, including the Swedish anti-Islamic party the Sweden Democrats and European politicians like Geert Wilders know that you can´t just kick the Muslims out Sweden/Europe. Even if they would get a majority of the seats in the parliaments, the constitutions of all European countries prohibit such things (Britain has no constitution but they have some kind of equivalent which probably also prohibits such moves).
Furthermore, I also think that a majority of the electorate prefers to become a minority rather than violate basic human rights.
However, some immigrants probably believe that parties like the Sweden Democrats and politicians like Geert Wilders intend to kick them out. That may cause problems in the future when the native population has become a minority.
The native populations of Europe have no choice. They won´t get their old Europe back. The Muslims will become more numerous than the natives in 30-50 years in some Western European countries. And if the Muslims think they have been treated unfairly in the past they may think “now it´s payback time”. So I don´t think that it is a great idea to be rude to Muslims. The big media, which continuously tells the Muslims that the native population treats them unfairly cause enough trouble. They want the Muslims to think “now it´s payback time” in 30 years. Being rude to the Muslims only makes matters worse.

Well, unfortunately the big media also say that native Europeans have not only been unfair to Muslims but to all non-European immigrants and to people of mixed descent. Some Swedish skinheads have been beaten/stabbed to death in the past by young men of mixed Swedish/Arab descent.
My impression is also that many people think that “Muslim” is a code word for “Darkie”. And that is to some extent true. Therefore, it is quite likely that people who are Muslims on paper and people of mixed descent find anti-Muslim propaganda offensive and may – in the future – think that it is payback time. So therefore I think that anti-Islamic or anti-Muslim propaganda may cause extra problems for future native Europeans even if the Muslims become Muslims on paper like you say. The fact that the big media tell the immigrants that native Swedes are unfair to immigrants will probably cause enough problems for future native Swedes. The big media and pundits say that there is some kind of “structural racism”. I don´t quite understand what things like “structural racism” really is but it seems to be about the evilness of the native population against immigrants and their descendants. Most problems immigrants and their children experience in Sweden is due to various forms of evilness of the native population directed at the immigrants and their descendants according the pundits and the big media. It is likely that at least some of the immigrants believe in this crap and if that´s the case we probably got trouble in pipeline.
And if you add an anti-Islamic or anti-Muslim attitude among natives to the problems outlined above more people in the future majority population will believe that they have been treated unfairly and that it may be justified to make the native population pay for that. And that means additional, potential trouble in pipeline. The big media and the pundits probably think that´s great. That is probably why they are so eager to cover this topic.
(I don´t know how many Muslims that leave the faith. Very few are converted to Christianity. But many Muslims seem to be Muslims on paper. But this is rather irrelevant. My point is that even people that are Muslims on paper or secular people of mixed descent may find anti-Islamic or anti-Muslim attitudes offensive.)

President Barack Obama on Sunday called the California shooting an "act of terrorism” and said the couple who launched the attack "had gone down the dark path of radicalization."
"They had stockpiled assault weapons, ammunition and pipe bombs. So this was an act of terrorism," he claimed.
Kelley said “the people that are being implicated – the couple -- first of all if they were planning something, if they were radicalized as this is being said, and clearly the NSA, the FBI will be right on the top of these people all the time, but rather than stopping them from doing something, they were nurtured to be used for this exact purpose.”
“I do not suspect that these people have anything to do with the actual shooting. I suspect that these were patsies, no different than Timothy McVeigh or any of these other people who have historically been used to implement these terrorist acts,” the commentator said.
“If you look at the people that were wounded you can see clearly that bullet wounds are not real. The .223 caliber weapon or bullets fired from AR15 – an extremely powerful weapon -- would blow someone’s arm off, it is not going to make a small hole,” said Kelley, who is also a weapons expert.
“So clearly this is a very very dirty false flag. Obviously, the United States is getting very very desperate; the government here is very desperate, they need to do something immediately to disarm the United States prior to a revolution, because the people here are waking up very fast, and they are ready to shut down this evil empire. And this needs to happen very soon,” the analyst concluded.
In his televised address from the Oval Office, Obama called for tougher gun controls, starting with a ban on gun purchases for anyone on a US government no-fly list. "To begin with, Congress should act to make sure no one on a no-fly list is able to buy a gun.”
"What could possibly be the argument for allowing a terrorist suspect to buy a semiautomatic weapon? This is a matter of national security," he stated.
Obama has said the “biggest frustration” of his time in the office has been the inability to reduce unparalleled levels of gun violence in the country.
“If you look at the people that were wounded you can see clearly that bullet wounds are not real."

If all murders were committed by guns, we would have a dozen dead here and a hundred there. The totals would be less than car accidents, hospital mistakes, etc. and you would be correct.
