What Drives Gun Sales In America
Several days after releasing a historic front-page Op-Ed calling for gun control in the aftermath of the San Bernardino shooting, the NYT decided to actually do the analysis to find out just what it is that drives gun sales.
In an article title "What Drives Gun Sales", the NYT tries to spread the blame around, accusing everything from loose restrictions, to higher handgun sales, to hurricanes, but the real reason is a simple one. It begins with the letter O, ends in bama, and has made the crusade for gun control one of the core prerogatives of its presidency, as the following chart from the NYT itself shows.

I was just at my gun store, they were closing and there were at least 12 people in there waiting to check out.
Same here. I was in mine last Saturday and it was packed. I broke the clip on my holster getting into the car. Went up there, found another holster(id stay away from desanti, if you saw how easily it broke, you wouldn't buy one) and just wanted to hold the G43 under the counter to make sure it for right, and I didn't think they'd like me pulling the loaded on out in the store. It took me 5 minutes to find a holster and another 15 to get out of there. People were hearing from the employees that they closed in an hour and wouldn't be able to leave with the gun that day (it was taking almost 2 hours to here back from NICS) and were leaving to go to a big box store that was open later. It was the most people I've ever seen packed in there.

I have a complementary theory. Obama has certainly spurred gun sales from the pro-gun crowd, but what has driven the apparent movement of a significant portion of people into the pro-gun crowd?
I think it's the show the Walking Dead.
I'm totally serious. The show is in its sixth season now. It is wildly popular. And it is unabashedly pro-gun, and it implicitly supports the arguments that are used to counter gun control advocates.
Every episode, people use guns to protect themselves. People die when there is evil approaching and they can't protect themselves. You know as their intestines are being ripped out, that every single unarmed victim wished they had a gun in their hand.
And the gun is never the bad guy. Even when a human villain is shooting down someone we are cheering for, no one is blaming the gun. It is the evil man holding the gun that we hold responsible. And we hope our heroes will have their own gun nearby when he comes calling.
Pop culture influences value systems all the time. I really think in this case, this show pushes people towards an appreciation of guns. I just don't think you can watch six seasons of that show and see all the horrors that befall unarmed victims and not think, hmmm, maybe it would be nice to be able to defend myself.

What drives gun sales? That's EASY...
Mostly it's the IDEOLOGY OF PERMA-FEAR (Crime & Gov), CULTURE OF FRONTIER IMAGE, and PROFITS. The other drivers are small potato, in comparison.

If you're surprised by this, you're an idiot. I'd put money that the NRA does, in fact, donate to pro-gun folks in Congress. I'd put an equal amount of money that the NRA, does, in fact, donate to anti-gun presidential candidates. Why? Arms manufacturers love every bit of it. Why is it that Democrats haven't tried to amend the Constitution in 20 years to ban guns? The same could be asked about why Republicans haven't tried to amend the Constitution to ban abortion in 20 years? It's the same reason why elections are based almost solely on "social" issues. It's because the average citizen doesn't get motivated about some trade deal that enriches 20 businesses that contribute to the campaign. They are motivated by fear that something they've been told or cultured into believing is in jeopardy so they vote. Guns, abortion, fucking the same gender, war, peace, poor, rich, yada yada yada. Your vote means absolutely fuck-all. You want to vote for a black dude because of what it would "mean?" So be it. You want to vote for a woman because of what it would "mean?" So be it.
