Thousands Of Militiamen Stage Anti-Turkey Protests In Baghdad As Iraq Lodges Security Council Complaint

Tyler Durden's picture

"They can resort to the U.N. Security Council, that is their natural right, but this is not an honest step,” Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday, referencing Baghdad’s move to appeal to a “higher” authority in an increasingly tense standoff with Ankara stemming from the latter’s decision to send several hundred troops and 25 tanks to Bashiqa (just northeast of Mosul) a week ago.

Turkey contends that the deployment is part of an agreement between the two countries that allows for Turkish soldiers to assist in training Iraqi and Peshmerga fighters as they battle ISIS. Iraq doesn’t seem to remember much about the alleged partnership.

Earlier this week, Turkish PM Ahmet Davutoglu said Ankara has no intention of withdrawing the troops and even went so far as to suggest that Baghdad was being “provocative” by questioning Turkey’s motives.

We of course have suggested that one explanation for Turkey’s deployment is that Erdogan is keen on having an expanded military presence in northern Iraq now that some rather inconvenient questions are being asked about his family’s role in facilitating the flow of illicit ISIS crude from oil fields in Iraq and Syria to Ceyhan.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the deployment comes as controversial Iraqi lawmaker Hanan Al-Fatlawi accuses John McCain of planning to insert some 100,000 troops in the country to include 10,000 US soldiers and 90,000 from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, and of course, Turkey. To be sure, 350 is a long way from 90,000, but the point is, Turkey is suddenly determined to have boots (and tank tracks) on the ground near Mosul and it’s not entirely clear why.

Last Sunday, Baghdad demanded that Ankara pull its forces out with Abadi issuing a 48 hour ultimatum. When Turkey refused, Russia raised the issue with the Security Council. Iraq’s UN ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim subsequently told reporters that Baghdad and Ankara "are solving it bilaterally." "We have not yet escalated it to the Security Council or to the United Nations," he added.

That was on Tuesday. By Friday, a letter emerged which indicates that Alhakim has indeed “escalated” the matter after losing patience with the Turks. "We call on the Security Council to demand that Turkey withdraw its forces immediately ... and not to violate Iraqi sovereignty again," he wrote, in a letter addressed to U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power, president of the Security Council (who you might recall is fond of tweeting out foreign policy).

"This is considered a flagrant violation of the principles of the U.N. Charter, and a violation of Iraqi territorial integrity and sovereignty of the state of Iraq," the letter continues.

"Iraq worked on containment of this issue by diplomatic means and bilateral talks, but these efforts did not succeed in convincing Turkey to withdraw its occupying forces from Iraqi territory," Alhakim told Power.

“The Turkish military is helping to train local Iraqi volunteers and Kurdish peshmerga who are preparing for a long-anticipated offensive to retake Mosul, a major northern city seized by Islamic State more than a year ago,” Reuters says, parroting the official line.

Note that no one is "preparing" to retake Mosul, at least not where "preparing" means an offensive is imminent. Additionally, it's bizarre that the Western media continues to insist that the Turks are on some kind of legitimate training mission. Baghdad clearly wants them out and therefore, their presence is illegal - by definition. To the media: The fact that Erbil is ok with it doesn't count, just like it's technically not ok that the KRG siphons off some 600,000 b/d of Iraqi crude without SOMO's permission.

"Iraq’s government has ordered the closure of its commercial office in Istanbul, according [and] authorities may take 'tougher steps,' including cutting trade links with Turkey," Bloomberg said on Thursday, adding that "total bilateral trade amounts to about $11 billion a year."

So it would appear that Ankara is once again set to Plaxico itself economically for the sake of achieving a set of military and geopolitical goals that remain shrouded in relative secrecy (even as Erdogan's brazen actions are slowly revealing his true nature to the world).

Meanwhile, Iraq's Shiite militias have taken to the streets of Baghdad to protest Turkey's occupation and what they believe is an insufficiently forceful response from the Iraqi government. "Thousands of protesters, most of them members of Iraq’s Shiite paramilitary forces, gathered in downtown Baghdad on Saturday demanding the pullout of Turkish troops from the country," Sputnik reports, citing TV Alsumaria.

"As the leader of a military brigade, I am not fully satisfied with the government's action, and we are here to say that Iraq's patience has run out," said Ali Rubaie, a commander.

"But we are not here to doubt the ability of our commander-in-chief, and as a brigade we are ready," Rubaie added.

Note that earlier this week, Iran's militas threatened to target the Turkish troops and drive them out of Iraq. "Crowds of young men in military fatigues chanted against Turkish 'occupation,' vowing they would fight the Turkish troops themselves if they do not withdraw," AP reported on Saturday morning. "The demonstration, called for by the umbrella group of Shiite militias in Iraq whose power rivals that of the Iraqi army, was attended by militia leaders and some Shiite politicians."

"Turkish interests in Iraq will now be a legitimate target because of Turkey's assault on Iraqi territories," Kata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada, one of the Shia militias of the Popular Mobilisation said in a statement, earlier this week. Similarly, Harakat al-Nujaba called Turkey "a terrorist state." You're reminded that these groups have a reputation for fearing no one other that Khamenei himself.

The Security Council was not expected to call an emergency meeting over the weekend.

The takeaway here is that the situation is about to reach a boiling point and the Iraqi regular army has neither the capability nor the will to stop the militias from attacking the Turks. In fact, as we've documented extensively (see here for instance), some divisions report to the militias' chain of command rather than to Baghdad.

It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall when the Security Council does finally take up the issue considering recent calls from Hakim al-Zamili (who, like Hanan Al-Fatlawi, is an influential and controversial Shiite lawmaker) for "direct Russian military intervention" to "solve" the Turkish problem.

Note the similarity to Syria here. If Iran's Shiite militias were to end up pushing north in Iraq under cover of Russian airstrikes you would have the exact same set up as you have in western Syria: Tehran and Moscow driving north towards Turkey with a large ISIS-held city in between.

Now that Turkey is effectively blocked by Putin in Syria, Erdogan must take his illegal war somewhere else.  It's all done with the knowledge and approval of his lord and master, the Nobel Prize Winner.

Turkish Troops Deployed to Iraq on False Pretenses

Iraqi MP Awatef Nema told RT that no agreements regulating the Turkish military presence in northern Iraq were made between the governments of the two countries.

Earlier President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an claimed that Turkey will not pullout its troops from Iraq as they have been deployed in the country for training of Iraqi military and police rather than for combat.

"Our servicemen went to Iraq as instructors, their mission is limited to training," Erdogan said during a news conference in Ankara on Thursday.

Fascinating that when it suits TPTB, NATO members must walk in lock-step... and when it doesn't suit, the invaded has to rely upon bilateral diplomacy with the belligerent NATO member alone.

Granted, many western nations have set a disgusting precedent pissing all over the sovereign state of Iraq since 1991 at least... amongst many others.

As has been pointed out by the Iraqi MPs, there aren't even any Iraqi government military forces to train in that region of Mosul. No forces there except ISIS.

@rejected

This ugly disdain and nasty jokes come from the firm refusal of the French to join America in Irak, in 2003.

Since France refused to go to Iraq, American warmongers and neo-cons made French army look like cowards – as a punishment.

But History has proved the French were right, and that the WMD were only a dirty trick to serve as a pretext.

Nevertheless, the hate of American warmongers against France remains still there, well alive, even in ZH.

This stale hate still shows through "innocent good jokes" about the “surrender monkeys” and their white flags

As for the rest, the French can be proud of their Military History:

According to the British historian Niall Ferguson, since 387 BC, France has fought 168 major wars against such badasses as the Roman Empire, the British Army and the Turkish forces. Their track record isn't too shabby, either: They've won 109, lost 49 and drawn 10 times.

This makes France the most successful military power in European history - in terms of number of fought and won …

The French have succeeded to conquer and guard the largest country in Europe.

@. . . _ _ _ . . .

As apparently History is not your favorite subject I’ll give you a more complete view:

* The Germans did in WWII what they couldn't do in WWI and that was to break through the lines and encircle the French army. The French in 6 weeks lost 260,000 wounded and 108,000 killed men. They fought on to let the British escape via Dunkirk. After that fighting on would have been a useless suicide.

* Vichy was recognised by the US Government until end of 1942!

* Apart from the puppet government based in Vichy, there was a free government based in London under the authority of General De Gaulle.

* In all occupied countries by the Nazis, some citizens, driven by nationalism, ethnic hatred, anti-communism, anti-Semitism, or opportunism knowingly engaged in collaboration. But the LVF (Legion Volontaire Francaise), the French volunteer army that the Germans tried to organize, was a gigantic flop: Only a division was supplied to the German army, whereas the Netherlands (with a 4 times less important population) supplied 2 divisions.

* In all occupied countries by the Nazis, the Jews have been quite completely exterminated during WW2. In occupied France, “only” (if we may say) 25% of the Jews have been deported. Most of the Jews succeeded to survive thanks to the active and passive resistance of a large part of the population. This explains why France is now, by far, the country in Europe with the largest Jewish community (more than 600 000).

* During the Italian campaign of 1943, 130,000 Free French soldiers fought on the Allied side (under General Juin)

* By the time of the Normandy invasion, Free French forces numbered approximately half a million regulars and more than 100,000 French Forces of the Interior (FFI).

The FFI in Normandy and the Île-de-France region surrounding Paris began to harass German forces intensively, cutting roads and railways, setting ambushes and fighting conventional battles alongside their allies. This caused the death, arrest, or deportation of 90,000 resistance fighters  -  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Resistance

General Eisenhower estimated the value of the Résistance to have been equal to ten to fifteen divisions at the time of the landings  -  http://voices.yahoo.com/the-french-resistance-world-war-ii-400073.html

* The Free French 2nd Armored Division, under General Philippe Leclerc, landed in Normandy, and, in the waning days of summer 1944, led the drive toward Paris, and later Strasbourg.

* 3500 French pilots served in the RAF  -  http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Air_Force

and others in Russia in Normandie-Niemen Squadron  -  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normandie-Niemen

BTW about treason:

* U.S. economist Victor Thorn has noted that a large number of US corporations aided the Nazis (such as Standard Oil and Rockefeller's Chase Bank, as well as U.S. automobile manufacturers), but Prescott Bush's interests were much more profound and sinister.

* France was let alone facing a nazi-fanaticized country with a population of 80 million (vs. 40 million in France), a particularly well prepared war-industry, and an air superiority of 5 vs. 1. At the same time the “US ally” refused to sell planes on credit to France!

Americans think they are such great warriors - lucky for them 90% of the Wehrmacht was on the Eastern front or they would have been food for the Eels.

I don't deny any of what you wrote (but I don't appreciate the slander.) As it turns out, I am a fan of history, but I do not, as a rule, trust the books written by the victors for their accuracy.

I wasn't trying to give a history lesson, just sum up an American notion.

As o r c k stated: "...their reputation derives from..."

I was simply stating that American opinion of the French is based mostly on the notion of Vichy French 'treason'. The French suffered, and they played their part. The Brits, on the other hand, have always hated the French due to their innumerable wars.

Based on your username and avatar, I assume you are French. It surprises me, then, that you would need to go to Wikipedia to 'educate' us about WWII. Let me tell you something about ZH Americans, they know next to nothing about France, and they care just as little.

If I were you, I wouldn't waste my time. Respire.

My apologies, but as you wrote, and that is also my opinion, most Americans know next to nothing about France's History. In your case I obviously was wrong.

"If I were you, I wouldn't waste my time":

About that, I'll make you the same answer than to "brucyy". I think it is really a good thing (and somehow really funny) to perturb the so comfortable and usual French bashing by spelling out a few home truths - and restore France's History which is far different from what is taught by Hollywood or Fox News.

And do you also know that the Russian constitution was written with the help of "American advisors"? It suited them, when they had the puppet Yeltsin in power, but it suddenly does not suit them now? They should just go to hell. The only effect these attempts for color revolutions have on the majority of Russians is that they seem to have given up the idea of Western-style "democracy" altogether. And I don't blame them. Why should the West tell them how to live???

According to recent polls, two-thirds of Russian citizens say that after 2018 they would like to see Vladimir Putin or his personally proposed successor as president after the elections. Only 18 percent percent of Russians say that the nation should choose someone with a different approach. The share of Russians who think that replacement of officials is a key condition for a successful political system dropped from 60 percent to 45 percent.

The share of Russians who are happy with Vladimir Putin’s work as president had reached 89 percent. Sixty-four percent think the current policies of the Russian authorities are correct – also the highest in history. The proportion of Russians who expressed dissatisfaction with Putin’s work was 10 percent.  And these 10 percent should dictate others how to live???

Don't try to push the Russians. As one of my Slavic countrymen said: "Silly Americans keep asking, who are Russians? Why they do not want to be more like us? I would answer them: Russians are Russians and will always be Russians, as they have been for thousands of years." And as a European, I can tell you that we are more and more unhappy with the idea of democracy as well. Democracy seems to be too vulnerable to impostors and oligarchic powers. More and more Europeans are now looking at the Russian example and looking for "strong visionary leaders", who - unlike what we are told by the USA to believe, do not necessarily have to be dictators. Hungarians have Orban. French are now increasing their support for Le Pen (Once in the past they had Charles de Gaulle, who kicked USA from France. And the French did not consider him a "dictator"). Polacs now also have a very strong and conservative government. And you can bet that this trend will continue. We are just sick of liberal democracy.

Turkey is trying to expand its borders. I suspect Obama & Co have shared their plan with Gollum that they want to split Iraq up into 3 countries and Turkey is looking for a piece of dirt and some oil fields to claim for Ottoman Glory.

You definately don't want to be a Turk in Iraq right now.

Putin will insist the "legal" path be followed prior to blowing the shit out of the Turks.

This corridor is likely the route of both drugs and oil with Turkey as the facilitator, and the CIA as the benefactor.

Cool game Putin is playing, resolving multiple problems at a go.

Nothing happens until Iraq formally and loudly invites Russia to remove the Turks.

I do expect this to result in nukes flying, hopefully a limited exchange, while the keys are taken from the children by the adults.

The boundaries of the sandbox 'nation-states' have been as dynamic as the dunes in the desert.  Time for a redraw, following a good (let's shoot for a 20-year) war.  In thinking about this in the context of sandbox history, the West should encourage the islamists to channel their bloodthirst BACK toward each other.  Sunni vs Shia, Sunni versus Wahabi . . . whatever gets them focused on killing each other.  The US merely need to find and arm a good strong-man (Saddam II) and justify it in terms of detente with the "real" enemy (Russia).

It will be interesting to see how the US population responds to another invasion of Iraq.  The Iraq war was never popular to begin with but now they want to send 100,000 men to Iraq and go toe to toe with Putin, one would think the population would be kicking and screaming.  Should provide an interesting barometer of how brain dead Americans are at this time.

The reason Turkey moved into Iraq is to replenish their supply of American-made equipment to be abandoned by the Iraqi Army as soon as some Turkish troops get close enough to be seen with a telescope.

Much cheaper than buying factory direct from the USA (and less paperwork BS to deal with).

Good question. The answer is probably that Turkey expects a quick reaction which then can be used to bring in full attack with NATO forces.

Remember Georgia? the Georgian aggression was translated into Russian aggression because Russia reacted to Georgian incursion into Ossetia.

Now Turkey cannot escalate the war but have to explain exactly why they are in Iraq.

Same as Turkey tried by shooting down Russian bomber and then ran to NATO for support.

All corrupt leaders need wars to maintain power. Just like Obama.

Iraq is lost to America.

Granted, the Iraq invasions (Gulf War I and Gulf War II) were wrong. In Gulf War I it is well known in the oil patch that Kuwait WAS HORIZONTALLY drilling the Zubair field from inside Kuwait (field arguably spans both borders). Iraq asked for a compensation/sharing package or stop drilling. The Emir of Kuwait told the Iraqi Envoy, "Kuwait will never stop drilling the Zubair field untile every Iraqi woman is a $10 whore." A few weeks later Saddam rolled into Kuwait. Saddam had no idea the Yanks would come for him.

Gulf War II: Ok, so some tribe (either the saudis or the CIA or the Israelis) blew up WTC...so we invaded Iraq and strung Saddam up by his neck and killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis with sanctions between both wars as well as really fucking Basra up with DU (especially in Rumaila where there were quite a few dug in tank positions).

So instead of taking the oil (as the Iraqis have always thought America would) America should have just fucking taken it! In for a penny in for a pound. Bremmer could have set up a Petroleum Institute, set up the Production Sharing Contracts, and focused on securing Basra province instead of building a Taj Mahal embassy in Baghdad. Basra practically floats on a lake of oil....technically one of the easiest places in the world to drill with more gas than they know what to do with.

What is happening in Iraq right now is pretty grim...the Russians, Chinese are taking the oil and the oil work; the Iranians have taken the country politically, and the fucking Turks are stealing the silverware with the local ISIS thugs.

Nice work Obama. You just turned over at least 12% of the world's known to Iran. It only cost us a few trillion and a few thousand dead Americans and 25 years of effort.

(Note: remember those bumper stickers from the 1980s in oil towns "Please God, let there be another oil boom. I promise not to piss it all away next time." WELL OBAMA JUST PISSED IT AWAY!

Wonderfully well written, Sir.

This is exactly what happens when you pretend to be a good guy. You cannot just go into a country and take the oil.

First you say the leadership of the country is bad, eveil, "undemocratic".  Then liberate thru one way or another, i.e. using local forces or US soldiers.

Then, you implement rules and regulations for democratic ways for using natural resources. Then let the US and European Oil Corporations to move in and take it all.

That's how it worked in Indonesia during the 1970s when US toppled then President Sukarno and implemented rules thru their new Puppet President that allowed western Oil companies to completely take over the Indonesian oil industry. That template is used again and again in all countries. Soviet Union simply set and watched as Stalin was already gone and Brezhnev was more interested in kissing other men.

But recently the US tactic is backfiring on every occassion. US "liberates" a country from a Tyrant, and people actually take up the power. Russia and Iran seems to be behind the rise of people power but nothing can be seen clearly.

Yemen is a good example, US and Saudi engineered the replacement of Saleh with Hadi. But in the new democratic environment people started questioning every decision by Hadi.

The NeoCons or whoever is responsible for all this US policy errors seems to have found the answer. Stop being a nice guy or stop promoting Democrazy. Send in super drugs to create aggressive monsters, who can kill and eat human hearts, while directly stealing oil and send thru a friendly neighborhood colloborator.

And even in that new game, US found out that Russia and Iran are equally absorbing oil from Iraq and Syria regions at a slightly higher price to counter the game. That is known as Jihad Oil among international traders.

I thought US was the best in technology and trading infrastructure. We should stick to it. Now we are in the process of loosing it all including US reserve currency status.
