Russian Missile Destroyer "Fires Warning Shots" To Avoid Collision With Turkish Vessel

Tyler Durden's picture

Another day, another military escalation between Russia and Turkey, this time not in the air, but on the water in the northern part of the Aegean sea, where the crew of the Russian "Smetlivy" destroyer was forced to use firearms on Sunday to prevent a collision with a Turkish seiner vessel according to a statement by Russia's Ministry of Defense.

The full statement from Russia's Defense Ministry read that "the crew of the Russian patrol ship Smetlivy which was located 22 kilometres from the Greek island of Lemnos in the northern part of the Aegean Sea avoided collision with a Turkish seiner."

The crew of the Kashin-class guided missile destroyer Smetlivy spotted the Turkish fishing trawler some 1,000 meters from the Russian warship early on Sunday morning, the ministry said. The ship was sailing towards the destroyer and ignored calls for radio contact and other attempts to communicate.

The destoyer's morning crew spotted an approaching Turkish ship at a distance of approximately one kilometer. The seiner did not get on the air for radio contact with the Russian ship and did not respond to signal lamps or flairs.

Upon the Turkish seiner's dangerously close approach to "Smetlivy" at a distance of 600 meters, the Russian partol ship fired a shot beyond the hitting range of the fireamrs to avoid collision.

The ministry said the Turkish fishing ship changed course after that and kept about 540 meters from the Smetlivy, but didn’t contact the Russian warship.

“Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov has summoned the military attaché of the Turkish embassy in Russia in connection with the incident in the Aegean Sea,” the statement said.

Muzaffer Gecici, who is the owner of the Turkish fishing vessel Geciciler Balikcilik, however flatly denied the Russian claims saying that his boat and the Russian warship had a distance of at least 1 mile (1.6 km), speaking to the Turkish media.

He also stated that the Russian warship was not on the move and nobody heard any warning shots from the destroyer, adding that his vessel is technologically well-equipped and that he has already given footage from the incident to the Turkish Coast Guard.

Meanwhile, the Russian ministry has released another statement after it summoned Turkey’s military naval attache in Moscow, Rear Admiral Ahmet Gunes, saying that the Russian Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Antonov had “a conversation” with Gunes.  The statement has also claimed that the Turkish vessel, which is a small civilian fisher boat, was able to provoke the Russian military guard ship Smetlivy.

“Just by good fortune, the tragedy had been avoided,” the statement kept claiming.

For now there is no official (or unofficial) closure of the Bosphorus to Russian shipping, however as noted previously, this does remain a key Turkish trump card, one which however Putin would promptly read as an declaration of war by Erdogan, and as a further reminder, the bloody Russo-Turkish was of 1828 was sparked by nothing less than the closure of the Dardanelles Strait to Russian ships.

Erdogan should be very worried for himself and his family,  He has opened up a battle on multiple fronts.  Russia, Kurds, Syria, Iran, Iraq.

His biggest ally is the lazy thinkers called the West and the CIA which is used to losing battles.  He has a civil war brewing and he is now the target of hit squads from mutliple countries.

They will do anything it takes to stop the Russians from getting easy access to the Med. They were spitting feathers when Russia even just got access to the Black Sea.

I don't have good links to share, but Constantinople going to Russia and/or Greece is reportedly one of those "secret understandings", which the Anglo-French side used to cement Russian involvement in the Great War.

Of course, those understandings were rendered moot when Russia's revolutionary government concluded a separate peace with the Central Powers.

FWIW, the Russian Army was camped out on the Sea of Marmara in 1878, and it was only the French and British that kept The City out of Russian hands.  Times change.

Re: Bama -" who is going to do what to russia"

For starters, US/Israel took down Russia's airliner.

Turkey shot down Russia's military jet in Syria.

AFTER these the US flew fighters into Syria and directly bombed a Syrian military base. And for fun blamed Russia for it.

Turkey has moved troops, not just into Iraq, into Syria and Putin is afraid to confront.  The US is building an airbase in NE Syria.

If Putin does not respond when the US directly attacks Russia's ground troop proxies it shows he has lost Syria.  Wait, that already happened.  Ok, we know, he will do it Next time.  So, the next time Syrian/Hezbollah/Iran troops are bombed and Putin does nothing we can agree Syria is lost.

Iraq had a best military in the ME, Libya was a stable country and prosperous.  Down they went.

Putin to this day has refused to honor  the 2007 signed contracts to deliver the S300 or better missile system to Iran and Syria.  This keeps Iran and Syria more vulnerable. Putin helped force Syria to give up it's chemical weapons and consented to the sanctions against Iran.  These actions and other serve the agenda of Putin/Russia.

True, but there's more to it than that.  These people/monsters would rather destroy Europe, than have it swing away from them, and toward Silk Road 2.0 that excludes them.  Thus, the Balkanization of MENA, and the Islamification of Europe (to destroy its Culture and Nation States) are all part of the Master Plan.

Yes Latina, Turkey is a NATO member, it does not use it's military against the Russian Federation without orders from headquarters. The SU-24 shoot down was a direct order from the Pentagon. "Kill one of theirs and see how they react."

The American engineer who designed the F-16 wrote an Op Ed that lays out in detail how Turkey laid the ambush that got the Russian bomber. It required great co-ordination, including tanker aircraft to keep the Turkish planes on station for hours at low altitude waiting for the Russians to make their bombing runs, just as Russia infoprmed the USA they would do. The F-16 orbited at low altitude under Russian radars, buring enormus amounts of fuel to stay in position. They popped up for an instant to fire, then dropped down again and raced away. An ambush that could only have worked "IF the Turks knew just where the Russians were going to bomb". Enter the USA, who had that exact information for Turkey to do the deed. You think Putin isn't pissed?

Was this Pierre Sprey?  He also worked on the A-10 and quite the F-15 because it got too big.  The other men he worked with on the F-16 including the engineers was Colonel John Boyd and Colonel Eugene Richionni.  Boyd was a top fighter pilot and developed most of the USA fighter pilot doctrine.  He was a very bright man.  Richionni was more of a test pilot.

Note that the F-16 was made by General Dynamics aka the Crown-Krinsky crime family that was an LBJ supporter, McCain and Obola.  The family was also very nexus to the demise of JFK and RFK plus the F-111 scandal that was directly connected to LBJ before JFK was murdered. .

Don't worry about the Ukraine.   The Ukie conscripts do not want to be there.  They handed over loads of tanks, BMP, artilerry, ammo, APCs and other weapons to the DPR (Donetsk) and LPR in the last two cauldrons.

DPR PM Alexander Zakarchenko has said there will be NO Minsk 3.  When the Ukriane aka ZATO was losing badly and was encircle twice - they begged for a cease fire akak Minsk 1 and 2.

Zakarchenko and the LPR PM signed Minsk 2 because Putin wanted them to back off.  As a condition to Minsk 2 - Zakarchenko said there will be no Minsk 3.  DPR and LPR will not back off if zio-Kiev starts shit again.

The DPR today has an army that could beat most western European countries.  Maybe not Germany which is turning Islamic or the UK which is already Soros-Zio Islamic.

It truly is a footrace (pun intended) now, to get 'Boots On The Ground' for both Alliances (Russia/Syria/Iran vs. ZATO/KSA/Turkey).

These forces must control the land bridge that will either go East-West (Iran-Iraq-Syria-Europe), or North-South (KSA-Iraq-Syria-Turkey-Europe).  Northern Iraq and Northern Syria are key.

Neither side can afford to back down, so the ZATO alliance keeps doubling down (in predictable Chutzpah tradition), while the Bear & Friends are trying to play Reactionary Defense, rather than full and decisive Preemptive Offense.  Who has the superior strategy, while avoiding tactical mistakes?  Only time will tell.  But the relentless and steady escalation by Turkey is very, very troubling for the whole world, not just the ME region.

US/NATO wants to goad Russia into a war

War Is On The Horizon: Is It Too Late To Stop It? — Paul Craig Roberts

Russia was quickly successful in destroying ISIS arms depots and helping the Syrian army to roll back ISIS gains. Russia also destroyed thousands of oil tankers, the contents of which were financing ISIS by transporting stolen Syrian oil to Turkey where it is sold to the family of the current gangster who rules Turkey.

Washington was caught off guard by Russia’s decisiveness. Fearful that the quick success of such decisive action by Russia would discourage Washington’s NATO vassals from continuing to support Washington’s war against Assad and Washington’s use of its puppet government in Kiev to pressure Russia, Washington arranged for Turkey to shoot down a Russian fighter-bomber despite the agreement between Russia and NATO that there would be no air-to-air encounters in Russia’s area of air operation in Syria.

Although denying all responsibility, Washington used Russia’s low key response to the attack, for which Turkey did not apologize, to reassure Europe that Russia is a paper tiger. The Western presstitutes trumpeted: “Russia A Paper Tiger.” http://www.wsj.com/articles/turkey-shoots-down-a-paper-tiger-1448406008

''The elites borrow from the CB at 0% and lend to the government at 3%.  It's a good trade of free money riding the credit inflation wave.  If heliBen were to print up everyone a million dollars, they profit from inflation because they get their million before you do.

Money should not be owned by banks; this situation is an abomination that has led to more wars, deaths, ruin, the Holocaust, than any other.  Let the producers who dig up oil, gold, coal, farm for food or create things be the capital that finances expansion, not some parasitic banking clan who monopolized the gold market.

Everything that is occurring is to protect the creditmoney fractional banking racket, which has been institutionalized since the 1600s and goes back even to the time of Jesus.''

F. William Engdahl has written on this. The inevitable outcome of rule by banksters, big corporations, & big government in partnership with one another is impoverishment of the people. This is the definition of fascism. At the eve of WW1, a plundered industrially creaking Britain could no longer compete against a vibrant Germany. The Germans were expanding their science & industry, building transcontinental railroads, and making trade deals. TPTB upset the game board for their own benefit - at the cost of millions of lives.

And the university history profs scratch their heads & wonder why.

Economic - social chaos is what I'm prepped for, not the nuclear exchange kind. The last time I was on standby for a market meltdown was April last year (A couple of posts that indicated my intention at ZH) and again I'll be on standby for it on the 16th. The system is so broken and full of fantasy patchwork, I'm not relying on a repeat of precedents. It could go completely out of control within hours or days - who knows?

Not sure I'd want to survive a full scale nuclear exchange and the high probability of dying a slow, agonizing death. If it looks like it's happening, I'm driving to the nearest primary target (RAF Northwood HQ), take out my lawn chair, put on my shades and light a cigar to watch the final show. The Aegean would be a Greek lake if the Turks hadn't threatened Greece with casus belli if they extend their territorial waters to 12 miles...which is the normal practice internationally

Currently they extend to a pitiful 6 miles

Turkey routinely 'reserves' huge areas in the Aegean for naval exercises in what are actually Greek territorial waters.

I hope Russia goes to full war with these mofos because Greece is too small/bankrupt to face the bully alone

Lolmao.....planned this way, long ago. Here is excerpt Albert Pike's 1871 letter to Mazzini (mafia). Keep in mind many of the words he uses were not "invented" in 1871. How did he know ?

"The Second World War must be fomented by taking advantage of the differences between the Fascists and the political Zionists. This war must be brought about so that Nazism is destroyed and that the political Zionism be strong enough to institute a sovereign state of Israel in Palestine. During the Second World War, International Communism must become strong enough in order to balance Christendom, which would be then restrained and held in check until the time when we would need it for the final social cataclysm."

"The Third World War must be fomented by taking advantage of the differences caused by the "agentur" of the "Illuminati" between the political Zionists and the leaders of Islamic World. The war must be conducted in such a way that Islam (the Moslem Arabic World) and political Zionism (the State of Israel) mutually destroy each other. Meanwhile the other nations, once more divided on this issue will be constrained to fight to the point of complete physical, moral, spiritual and economical exhaustion…We shall unleash the Nihilists and the atheists, and we shall provoke a formidable social cataclysm which in all its horror will show clearly to the nations the effect of absolute atheism, origin of savagery and of the most bloody turmoil. Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will exterminate those destroyers of civilization, and the multitude, disillusioned with Christianity, whose deistic spirits will from that moment be without compass or direction, anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of Lucifer, brought finally out in the public view. This manifestation will result from the general reactionary movement which will follow the destruction of Christianity and atheism, both conquered and exterminated at the same time."

possible, but it is as likely, or even more, that it was just a trawler not even thinking about the whole thing and just doing it's work

trawlers, particularly with Turkish captains, are used to warships zipping past them without even a contemptuos glance. just check the max speed of that piece of Russian navy, the chances of a workship ramming it is literally zero, and the Aegean is crowded with all kind of ships

meanwhile, that trawler could also be a "safe ship" belonging to some intelligence outfit, state or private, or a mercenary smuggler catering to intelligences

stationary... 22 miles from Lemnos? now this is really unlikely (or even suspicious) for a Russian warship to be stationary there

anyway, a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashin-class_destroyer has four gas turbines that allow it to accellerate up to 38 kn : 70 km/h : 44 mph

the Russian captain could have done what was usual, until lately, and just showed off his legs. no trawler could ever match those

or blinded it with it's searchlights, or any usual measure, and they are plenty

instead, he choose to use a page from the new book of "how to engage Turkish vessels". hohum
