Russian Missile Destroyer "Fires Warning Shots" To Avoid Collision With Turkish Vessel

Tyler Durden's picture

Another day, another military escalation between Russia and Turkey, this time not in the air, but on the water in the northern part of the Aegean sea, where the crew of the Russian "Smetlivy" destroyer was forced to use firearms on Sunday to prevent a collision with a Turkish seiner vessel according to a statement by Russia's Ministry of Defense.

The full statement from Russia's Defense Ministry read that "the crew of the Russian patrol ship Smetlivy which was located 22 kilometres from the Greek island of Lemnos in the northern part of the Aegean Sea avoided collision with a Turkish seiner."

The crew of the Kashin-class guided missile destroyer Smetlivy spotted the Turkish fishing trawler some 1,000 meters from the Russian warship early on Sunday morning, the ministry said. The ship was sailing towards the destroyer and ignored calls for radio contact and other attempts to communicate.

The destoyer's morning crew spotted an approaching Turkish ship at a distance of approximately one kilometer. The seiner did not get on the air for radio contact with the Russian ship and did not respond to signal lamps or flairs.

Upon the Turkish seiner's dangerously close approach to "Smetlivy" at a distance of 600 meters, the Russian partol ship fired a shot beyond the hitting range of the fireamrs to avoid collision.

The ministry said the Turkish fishing ship changed course after that and kept about 540 meters from the Smetlivy, but didn’t contact the Russian warship.

“Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov has summoned the military attaché of the Turkish embassy in Russia in connection with the incident in the Aegean Sea,” the statement said.

Muzaffer Gecici, who is the owner of the Turkish fishing vessel Geciciler Balikcilik, however flatly denied the Russian claims saying that his boat and the Russian warship had a distance of at least 1 mile (1.6 km), speaking to the Turkish media.

He also stated that the Russian warship was not on the move and nobody heard any warning shots from the destroyer, adding that his vessel is technologically well-equipped and that he has already given footage from the incident to the Turkish Coast Guard.

Meanwhile, the Russian ministry has released another statement after it summoned Turkey’s military naval attache in Moscow, Rear Admiral Ahmet Gunes, saying that the Russian Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Antonov had “a conversation” with Gunes.  The statement has also claimed that the Turkish vessel, which is a small civilian fisher boat, was able to provoke the Russian military guard ship Smetlivy.

“Just by good fortune, the tragedy had been avoided,” the statement kept claiming.

For now there is no official (or unofficial) closure of the Bosphorus to Russian shipping, however as noted previously, this does remain a key Turkish trump card, one which however Putin would promptly read as an declaration of war by Erdogan, and as a further reminder, the bloody Russo-Turkish was of 1828 was sparked by nothing less than the closure of the Dardanelles Strait to Russian ships.

Ah, but did you read the article in the WashingtonsBlog, regarding

(a) the increase in Scope that Russia is facing in Syria,

(b) Israeli Commandos helping or rescuing Al Nusra and Al Qaeda fighters in southern Syria, and

(c) the reason for the Sunni Sallafist/Wahhabist escalation toward a Caliphate?

Details at http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2015/12/russia-losing-battle-jihadists-syria.html#more-52464.

Regarding (b) and (c)... IMO, Israel's right wingers (Likuds) and religious fundamentalists (Orthodox Jews) are of crazy, if they think that Salafist/Wahhabists around them will leave them alone forever.  If, for argument's sake, these Jihadists were to win in the region and establish their Caliphate, then Israel is their next, natural and unavoidable target.  It's only a question of When, not If.  In which case, why would these Israeli extremists even care about a secular Assad?  It makes NO sense.  What's the missing piece of the puzzle?

"In which case, why would these Israeli extremists even care about a secular Assad?  It makes NO sense.  What's the missing piece of the puzzle?"

Answer to the first question: They intend to invade to create a "greater Israel" that includes Damascus and secure the illegally occupied Syrian Golan Heights - water resources, land and even oil. Every zionist nutjob is harping on about the biblical David conquering Damascus and as usual, the Israelis will claim that it has always been theirs once they occupy it, denying even the existence of the Syrian people. They are proven thieves, liars and murderers with a proven track record of doing it to the Palestinians. Turkey is itching to take Northern Syria and as long as Erdogan remains in power, they'll be acting as Israel's bitch as well as NATO's madman.

Answer to the second: Israel has the most powerful military force in the region, bar none. Without the support of the Israelis and the Zionists at the US State Dept/CIA who keep the Salafist/Wahhabists topped up with weapons, ammo and cannon fodder, those Islamic nutjobs will crumble overnight. They're only thriving now because of huge logistical support. The entire Saudi armed forces can't even take Yemen and the Qataris use mercenaries - they are no match for Israel even if they used their conventional forces and their proxy ISIS fighters combined. Besides, I reckon most of the ranking ISIS guys will disappear to the suburbs of America and Turkey as soon as their usefulness approaches the sell by date of ISIS.

The anti-Russian powers, with Britain to the fore, have been playing this game in and around the Turkish Straits for centuries. The whole idea is to hinder, harrass and confine the Russian Black Sea Fleet, in an effort to prevent Russia getting free passage to the Med, where Britain has always sought to retain control over the two Mediterranean choke-points governing the flow of world trade and naval power - the Suez and Gibraltar. This area, with the Turkish Straits at its epicentre, remains a planetary crossroads of immense strategic importance. The Mackinder doctrine continues to inform British policy here - as far as possible prevent Russia from becoming a global naval power by curtailing her options on the southern flank.

There is a way around this Great Game which would allow Russia to simply sidestep any harrassment in the Turkish Straits, not to mention possible closure: that is, seek a deal with Assad to secure a 250-year lease on the two bases Russia now occupies in that country - Tartous, and Latakia. Then go ahead and develop these bases into full-fledged military installations. If the US and UK can have military bases spanning the globe, why not Russia? And by full-fledged I mean full-fledged - air defence, nuclear deterrents, tank brigades, submarine and destroyer facilities, the works.

This would be a massive setback for Britain, America and Israel, all of whom are desperate to keep Russia out of what they see as their sphere. They would no longer enjoy the leverage they have over Russia by confining it to the Black Sea. It would effectively change the balance of power not just in the eastern Med but globally, allowing Russia unhindered access to the wide open sea, and all that goes with it in terms of deterrence, projection of power, and geopolitical influence over every last conflict in the region, not least the most intractable of them all in the Holy Land.

That's a nice idea and would partly solve the Turkish Straits problem as it exists. Although Russia's bases in Syria would still need supplying from the motherland and this would become important in times of trouble such as we have now.

Which is why "ISIS" are trying to set up their "caliphate" across northern Syria and Iraq, to close off Russia's other route, from the Caspian Sea. And if that fails, Zion together with NATO will make sure Kurdistan is established instead. Either way, they will make damn sure, militarily if necessary, to prevent Russia opening a corridor from the Caspian to Syria.

This is not going to end well at all. There are powers here who have been playing this game for centuries, and they will not back down one inch. Too much at stake. They're shutting down Russia's options one by one, and eventually that's going to backfire in the most brutal, devastating war imaginable. I love Mother Russia, but nobody should be under any illusion that the Russians fight pretty. They don't. Their military doctrine is one of absolute, unremitting brutality. They fight to win, and they will throw everything at their enemies if they feel they are being cornered.

"[...] across northern Syria and Iraq, to close off Russia's other route, from the Caspian Sea"

Which would explain why the Turks have moved into Mosul. And why the US support the Kurds.

With Russia's land route and the Straits route blocked, it would have no way to get to its military bases on the Syrian Med except by air. Then it could be banned from using Turkish & Iraqi airspace.

And if all that happens, it would also block access for Iran to Syria thereby preventing the so-called "Shia-Crescent" from forming.

As you say, serious war is on the horizon.

I had thought Russia was also setting up a base on Cyprus.  If the Greeks had any brains, they don't, they would leave Zato, EU-SSR and join with Russia and allow a Russian base in Greece.

I thought that Russia might be able to run a pipeline from Syria to Greece to bypass Turkey.  I am hoping the Iraqis and Kurds decide that Russia is the only way forward. The Kurds need to get rid of that Bazani phony and his klan.

I think even Sunni members of Parliment in Iraq want the Russians in and USA out.

http://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2015/12/iraq-says-lets-go-with-russia.html

Gez, I don't mean to be too picky about your otherwise intelligent post but ...

1) the Black Sea fleet is just that: a gaggle of naval ships that just float around in the Black Sea all day to keep the Barbary pirates out and the Bulgarian pirates drunk.  They have no business moving out into the Aegean or as far as the Caribbean for that matter.

The whole idea is to hinder, harrass and confine the Russian Black Sea Fleet,

The Black Sea fleet would be hindered and confined if the Bosphorus were closed to them.  But harassed?  By whom?  And with what?

When the Black Sea fleet is confined to the Black Sea by Turkey, won't it be analogous to Smaug being cramped with his horde in Erebor, the Kingdom under the Mountain?

Don't be surprised if Russia doesn't blockade the mouth of the Dardanelles and examine all shipping into the Black Seas for war like devices.

Blockading all Turkish vessels from entering and passing through the Straits and blockading all cruise ships from disembarking their passengers at the Port of Istanbul to spend money there.

Finally, when the Turkish blockade goes into force, there will be more submarines in the eastern Mediterranean than people living in Beijing.

2) about that 250 year lease.  Will you take a 215 year lease?  Or a180 year one? Isn't Putin developing these two ports as we speak?  Wisely Russia is not advertising this development.

3) Russia's real loss by Turkey's blockade of their Straits is in the inconvenience to Russian imports and, to a lesser degree, its exports. An inconvenience of shipping time but not shipping fuel, given today's glut of crude.

Keep up the good work.

The Houthis have sunk at least 9 Saudi Arabian Vessels in Yemeni waters. Google it and you will find it. Also, if you Google you will see GCC countries have been losing a lot of chaps there lately. Now the Saudis have hired Academi to bring in planeloads of South American mercenaries...

The Yemenis are very tough people. Perhaps even tougher than Afghanis because they have more pride. Alexander the Great visited Yemen once. Felix Arabia. Place used to be full of Gingerbread houses and women doused in rose water just after Christ was born.

Now, it is a shit hole. It was a shithole when I was there a few years ago and I shudder to think of what the Movenpick looks like these days.

Using the shooting down of the SU24 as an example to bash Russia's military capability is stupid. I could go into a significantly detailed account of all the reasons why, but that is not worth my time and won't change the course of world events. What I will say is this:

The U.S. Is the only thing keeping NATO afloat, and the U.S. Military is broken. I know this because I was raised in the U.S. Military, served multiple combat tours and have many friends still in SF and at the Pentagon. Hard knock vets are being pushed out. 6K vets commit suicide every year and many struggle with what they experienced in Iraq and the Stan. Think long and hard about how spoiled Americans would fair in a real war, the likes of which we have never truly seen. Even WWII doesn't count, as the U.S., as usual, entered late in the game after the Soviets and Chinese did the heavy lifting. Keep trolling, just remember, when the American empire crumbles, the Baltics and Ukraine will be little more than a speed bump to Russia.

DPR or Donetsk People's Republic, in eastern Ukraine but now really NovoRussia, could probably beat any army in NATO except maybe the Poles, Germany (destroyed now due to Islam) and the UK (also destroy by zio's flooding Islamics in).

DPR mainly has weapons the Ukrainian Army left on the battlefield.  They repaired and refurbished all of them.  Meanwhile, any weapons Kiev had, they try to steal and then sell. The pathetic Cameron zio UK govt gave Kiev useless Saxon armored cars.  The dual shit-i-zen zoligarchs in Kiev tried to stela them and sell them.

The hapless Ukie army took them on  the road and crashed two into each other and one driver died.  Total junk.

For the poster Cillectivism - sorry no tears for your buddies in the Pentagram, SF or the military.  They have done nothing to defend the US Constuitution from the takeover by the zios.

I heard loads of GI shitheads in the military (brainwashed officers and enliisted) wax on and on about how great the IDF is with their army and air force. Hezbollah kicked their asses in 2000 and 2006 in Lebanon.

These dopes want to give their life to amazingly corrupt Uncle Sham or Scholomo?  They must not respect their own lives or care about their families.   The Framers of the Constuitution wanted a militia not a standing army.

Think of it like a lot of trains running on parallel tracks... all traveling in the same direction, with goals that line up for now.  In future maybe goals will diverge as said trains no longer run in parallel.

Turkey, NeoCon U.S., Israel, Qatar, Saudi  all have agendas that converge.   Their trains are running in the same direction.

Turkey wants a new Sunni Caliphate.  They feel that their religion and their country is big Kahuna in the region.  But, in reality, once Islam takes hold in a country, said country can no longer produce and compete.  It no longer will advance, but instead will regress.  In other words, sense of superiority inculcated by their theopolitical religion and history, is negated by facts on the ground.

Deep inside Islamist Turk brain is seething hatred for the Kaffir, because the Kaffir is outperforming Dar al Islam.  The kaffir must be removed, as he is a continuous and ongoing irritation reminding them of the falsity of Islamic superiority.  Also, political components of Islamic doctrine state that it is a goal to supress, convert, or remove kaffirs.  So, agressive supremacist behavior is sanctioned by their "books."

Those regions that especially draw Ire of Islamicists, are those that have successfully resisted Dar al harb.

http://atheism.about.com/od/islamicextremism/a/daralharb.htm

Constantiople, now Istanbul - used to be Orthodox Christian.

Greece and Russia also were/are Orthodox and have not fallen.  The Orthodox, especially of Russia, have rencent antibodies to prevent further Jewish Bolshveik type incursions.  They've also shut down Takfiri Chechen's and have proclaimed Russia an Orthodox civilization.  Orthodox are both Jew wise and Takfiri wise... they are on to the game aned aware of how these constructs want to undo their Christian civiization.

Russia's painful Communist/Bolsheveik history has created new awareness and conditions that can resist both Islam and Zion.  Zion controlled west has only just now grasped the significance of Russia (and China) advancements of the last 15 years.

At some level, the Turks must know that it is over for them and their dreams of a Caliphate.  This is their last opportunity, their last gasp.

To fully illustrate how Orthodoxy is a conscious pillar of Russian Civilization:  Russian defense minister crosses himself during may-day parades.

Russian/Chinese/Shia Crescent/French?  alliance is more durable than the loose Western alliance.  Western alliance is one of convenience and based on lies.

Vlad's bleeding rubles in Syria and then Iraq...oil's collapsed from $100+ to $30+ and headed lower...western funding for Russia's misadventures has been cut off.  It'll be interesting to see how long 'Vlad the malinky' can hang on with oil at these previously unimagined - to Putin, at least - levels and with Russia's ever-increasing military expenditures.

At some point ordinary Russians prefer bread on their tables to international wars.

Russia tucked its tail and bolted from Afghanistan after 8 years of unmitigated failure - even when it had the entire Soviet empire to draw upon.  Here, all it has is the demographically and geographically shrunk Russian empire.  What was 150 million people in 1991 has shrunk to 142 million a quarter century later as those that had a way out left for a better life elsewhere.  Putin is left to bribe ordinary citizens who produce children with additional ruble payments, annoint couples having 3+ children patriotic medals, etc.  It's hilarious and sad at the same time.

Meanwhile, whereas a couple of years ago the ruble sat at ~30/dollar, but it's over 70/dollar now.  Same story with the Euro.  What will it be in 2020?  200/dollar or worse?

Heck, at this rate, Vlad himself may swallow his pride and apply for a fiance visa.

Are you an instructor at the DOD's new Troll Defense School? That's good. Pushy but not stupid. Still..

1. Russia and funding - internally, spending on war will create more demand for Rubles. Russia is going to start selling more oil for Rubles. This will piss of the US but bodes well for Ruble. I suspect if push comes to shove Russia will take the tricks of the US Fed Reserve but I don't think it will come to that. Russians understand that they are facing another crisis - worse than the Bolsheviks - and with the Internet that covers the wide expanse of all 14 fucking time zones in Russia, you can bet all Russians are switched on these days.

2. Afghanistan - I think Russia spent less money in 8 years of Afghanistan than the US did in it's first decade in Afghanistan. The US will be there for a while yet so maybe you get your tax token's worth...

3. US population growth = immigration. You're own throat is being slit with dental floss and you don't even know it.

4. If Iraq is the last great oil patch, then Russia is the last great natural resources bank - forests in Sibera that are endless, lakes unseen by man, mountains never visited by a person - unlike the US which is a desert waste land of strip malls, walmarts and used car lots.

No mate, Russia is the last man standing against the New World Order. Some people like freedom. Some people like eating Shit On a Shingle.

The hotel is heated / cooled by fossil fuels, or since its France, nuclear power. They ate 5-star Michelin food, cooked over... more fossil fuel. Al Gore flew in his own private jet (more jet fuel), bought with the loot from selling his TV channel of lies to the oil sheiks of Qatar.

And that was just the fraudsters from the USA. a total of 160 countries sent delegates to burn fossil fuels and party at the taxpayers expense for almost two weeks.

Meanwhile, US taxpayers worried they would be murdered by the same terrorists that Obama claimed he defeated several years ago.

TURKEY- Is just another Muslim country that takes its orders from the USA.
The leadership are stooges and have sold out to the USA in order to commit their criminal acts.
I thought the Turkish people were smarter than that to allow such a regime to run their lives. It is very disappointing.

Wow! That is one OLD destroyer!  I seem to recall the Soviet Navy was running those all the way back when I was in the Navy. Never expected to find them still in commission! One thing few people realize, is that Ukraine was the major ship building region for the Soviet Navy. The Black Sea and Crimean ports sported large naval shipyards build Air Craft Carriers down to missile boats. After the fall of USSR, there was little money to build ships, but some contracts continued with the new Ukrainian Ship Yards. Up till the coup, Ukrainian industry still supplied many things to the Russian Federation military and commercial shipping and air forces. That is over now, with many large high tech firms having fired everyone, sometimes as many as 20K workers and closed up. NATO needs nothing from Ukraine, and the RF is working fast to build substitute industries in it's own cities and ports to meet the need. The coup cost over 200,000 workers in shipyards, aviation and high tech electronics and aireo engines their jobs.

The Russians can probably retrofit things and even use smaller ships like those littoral (small) ships, corvettes and destroyers in the Caspian.

They can be outfitted with Kalibr M anti-ship missiles. The anti-ship version of the Kalibr comes in at Mach 2.9 before it hits the ship.

http://www.navyrecognition.com/index.php/news/defence-news/year-2014-new...

They can also put them on freighters.

Turkish fishing boats used to violate often Bulgarias Black sea waters, until the border patrol started arresting them. ... As is typical for Turks they like to show they are strong even when guilty of violating the law, in one ocasion a Rukish fisherman attacked the border patrol officer with a stick resisting arrest, and unfortunately for him the officer shot him dead.

I have not heard since then any stories of Turks violating Bulgaria's borders at sea.

I wonder if he screamed "anti-semitic" at the border patrol officer before he was shot dead?

He probably thought, he was from the superior nation of Turkey and that no one can put a finger on him, no matter what he does. His foolishness, arrogance, disrespect and even an assault on an officer costed him his life.

Old joke:
A Russian walks in a club in Germany, wearing a t-shirt with "Turks have three problems" printed on it.
Immediately, a Turk comes up and starts talking tough to the Russian, "What's up with you? Looking for trouble?"
The Russian calmly answers, "See, that is your first problem, you always behave aggressively and blow things out of proportion."
After a while, the Russian leaves the club, but a group of Turks waylay and threaten him, "We're gonna make you pay for what you said in the club."
The Russian answers calmly, "Well, that's your second problem - you can't settle your issues on your own and always call your buddies for help."
"What did you say?" the Turks asked, pulling knives.
"And that is your third problem - you always bring knives to a gunfight." said the Russian in calm voice.

Russia seems to have launched one bad-ass PR dept in just the last two months.

Aerial filming of precision strikes, computer graphics of cruise missile flight from the Caspian, a bombshell exposé on the Erdogan crime syndicate, the sharp tongue of Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, and now a wicked sense of humor at RT.

Russia's response was reasonable and appropriate,
and more than restrained.
