Meet The Burmese "Slaves" Helping Wal-Mart Maintain Margins

Tyler Durden's picture

Peak globalization? Burmese men, women and children are being sold to factories in Thailand - "no names are used, just numbers" - and forced to peel shrimp that ends up in global supply chains. As a recent AP investigation uncovered, U.S. customs records show the shrimp made its way into the supply chains of major U.S. food stores and retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger, Whole Foods, Dollar General and Petco, along with restaurants such as Red Lobster and Olive Garden.

Shrimp is the most-loved seafood in the U.S., with Americans downing 1.3 billion pounds every year, or about 4 pounds per person. Once a luxury reserved for special occasions, it became cheap enough for stir-fries and scampis when Asian farmers started growing it in ponds three decades ago. Thailand quickly dominated the market and now sends nearly half of its supply to the U.S.

And the way to keep those prices low enough for a stagnant-wage-earning America... "slavery"

A lot of people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch of unconnected incidents and things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice of coincidence that lays on top of everything. Give you an example, show you what I mean: suppose you're thinkin' about a plate of shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, "plate," or "shrimp," or "plate of shrimp" out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconsciousness.

Race is just a distraction.

You are either psychopathic or you are not.

They are the 'sides' in the battle that must be fought.

Dermal melanin levels have nothing to do with it, really.

Same goes for religion, just more divide and conquer.

Dermal melanin concentration is just one aspect of race, but continue parroting feel-good propaganda that's been around since at least the 1960s. Cuz it's worked soooo well binding humanity thus far.

Here's the real issue, I hate to break it to the ignorant masses - but here ya go...........

This is all driven by choices the consumer makes.  Yes, you vote with your dollars!

Just try growing and processing and selling shrimp any other way than is being done now.  You will quickly go out of business.  Why?  Simple.  99% of people go straight for the cheapest price.

THIS, and nothing else, is the reason everything is being degraded from quality of products to treatment of workers.

Fact is, the consumers are the people who choose to support this NOT the businesses.

Chances are YOU are deciding to support poor quality products, slave labor, and so much more simply by your purchases decisions.

It is indeed a bitter pill to swallow when you come to understand you yourself are responsible.  You have to admit it and change your purchasing habits or shut the hell up,

Thick skulls are difficult to penetrate.

Well, sometimes it's best for the kiddies of ZH not to know "about some things" (other places in the world whose views on culture and morals are not anywhere the same as ours) as they rant & rave about their superiority & equality while driving themselves into absolute epileptic fits and falling off into the holes they themselves dug.

//////

Ahem...so anyways, expanding, we are told that "we" are NOT "exceptional" that ALL CULTURES AND MORALS are equal and should be taken into proper consideration and context when making judgements.

I always check food labels to see where it comes from.

In many instances I've found frozen shrimp from China and Vietnam at prices like the shrimp from Thailand.

This post about Burmese slaves peeling shrimp just does not ring true.

By the way check where your apple juice comes from the next itme that you go to the store: China, Poland, Argentina, Brazil ...

That's not good because Thailand has a lot of fresh water shrimp that come from their raw sewage rivers.  I made the mistake of ordering some in Bangkok thinking they were out of the Pacific, I took one bite and spit it in my napkin.  I asked where the shrimp came from and he pointed out the window at the River of Kings.  The same river that has killed Westerners just by getting some splash on their face.

They also farm shrimp and gawd knows how that goes down.

Apple and Nike get away with it.  Making shoes and tech for pennies on the dollar and they charge through the nose for it in the USA and Canada.

Think about it.  Apple has well over 100 billion cash last time I looked months or a year ago.  That is more than many countries have in the bank.  For a stupid phone and some pads?  Come on, at least pay your people enough to live right, you can afford it.  Same goes for Nike and a slew of others.

I would close the borders to to all imports.  You want to do business here, make it here.  It would enable more people to afford their products and take people off welfare and food stamps.  If what is left of the middle class doesn't take a stand, it won't happen and we'll all be slaves.

Don't cry 'protectionism'.  It is the only sane alternative at this point, even if we have to pay more.

Of course they do. Apple, Nike and a hundred thousand other brands. Anyone familiar with the supply chain of the importing corporations have known about this shit for decades.

In the early days, one argued that the cost of living disparities between the makers and buyers - the 3rd world manufacturers and consumers were such that it made for an absolute bonanza for all the middlemen and agencies. Millionaires were made in the supply chain overnight for delivering a few containers and all you had to do was go to the source and buy what they wanted at home for prices that did not make any sense.

Now that the cost of living and FX are up and static, the same corporatist fuckers are moving around the 3rd world and actually enslaving people to work at factories like Apple's Foxconn. Enduring not just "Bad conditions", but 21st century slavery you read about in sci-fi when you were a sprog. The bigger the brand, the bigger their crimes against humanity, using local psychos so they can always plead ignorance even though they hired them, funded them, set them up and ran them. A bit like how the CIA/Mossad set up ISIS.

I KNOW. I've seen it with my own eyes over a decade ago. You want to be conscience free? BUY LOCAL, wherever you are. As for Braeburn Capital, it epitomises the corruption, exceptionalist bullshit that make peasants out of the tax paying public.

What's really sad is that those kids might be the lucky ones, many of the Burmese kids are probably being sold into the Thai sex market.  How bad off do you have to be to end up as Thailands foreign slave class?   The Burmese have always gotten the shit end of the stick.

I read a really good book about a Thai Burma border area called "Restless Souls.. Rebels, refugees, medics and misfits on the Thai-Burma border" by Phil Thornton.   Apparently, it's not uncommon for ex military who are war junkies to fight occasionally for the Karen people as a hobby of sorts, maybe they were trying to forgive themselves for past transgressions, there are probably other things going on as well.  The history of that area is fascinating and yet horrifically tragic.

yes Sirreee Bob, Mr. Lovely Logical :

Supertramp – The Logical Song Lyrics When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily,
Joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
Logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
Clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world's asleep,
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am.

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
Liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!

At night, when all the world's asleep,
The questions run so deep
For such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am. Songwriters: DAVIES, RICHARD / HODGSON, ROGER

Westerners see slavery as an aberration, an offense to the natural order. In fact, freedom is the aberration, hard to gain and easy to lose. If you have no land, no savings, and no skills in demand, what exactly are you "free" to do? Go on welfare, become someone's bitch, or starve to death. Most people don't have the first option, and those in "rich" countries won't have it much longer.

Name a single person in history who ever had true freedom as it is defined.  Then name a single person who ever lived who is/was not enslaved.

The answer is no man has had freedom and all are enslaved, but liberty is a different "animal" altogether; limited ability to make selective choices.  Just saying that terms reveal the truth of a matter, but illusions are more favorable.

DaveA What can somebody do if he has no money, land or posessions?

If he's Burmese and not phsyicaly restrained by guns or chains or whatever, he can go out into the still vast forest/jungle and make a nice life for himself.

Maybe he'll never own an iPhone, but he will have great food and water in a beautiful setting and without the peculiar stresses of modern, Western life.

Do you remember Cyclone Nargis? The Burmese government would not allow a lot of relief aid. My West Coast liberal aquaintances were crying about "starving" people who's rice crops were destroyed. The people just switched to more fish, frogs, and local greens and shoots for awhile. The point is. It's the Tropics and in SEAsia, much of it is still lightly populated.

Tue, 12/15/2015 - 01:19 | 6924719 DaveA

If that jungle isn't already packed with thousands of other people attempting to do the same thing, there's probably a good reason. E.g. periodic floods, deadly mosquitoes, tigers, etc.

The Scottish Highlands are also lightly populated because the English burned all the houses and drove out the people so they could graze sheep on the land. I'll bet that happens a lot in Burma.

I have the on the ground experience, but you can go to Google Earth and fly around Burma. Incredible forests still exist. Speaking of population density, the most dense tiger population in the World is in Kachin State. Ok, you cannot go there right now because the local ethnic war just turned hot again, but you can see some wide open spaces still exist. The world doesn't always fit our preconceptions. The terrain is difficult.
