Meet The Burmese "Slaves" Helping Wal-Mart Maintain Margins

Tyler Durden's picture

Peak globalization? Burmese men, women and children are being sold to factories in Thailand - "no names are used, just numbers" - and forced to peel shrimp that ends up in global supply chains. As a recent AP investigation uncovered, U.S. customs records show the shrimp made its way into the supply chains of major U.S. food stores and retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger, Whole Foods, Dollar General and Petco, along with restaurants such as Red Lobster and Olive Garden.

Shrimp is the most-loved seafood in the U.S., with Americans downing 1.3 billion pounds every year, or about 4 pounds per person. Once a luxury reserved for special occasions, it became cheap enough for stir-fries and scampis when Asian farmers started growing it in ponds three decades ago. Thailand quickly dominated the market and now sends nearly half of its supply to the U.S.

And the way to keep those prices low enough for a stagnant-wage-earning America... "slavery"

The one thing I like about the Jews, besides their cunning and material possesions, is their Kosher food laws, I abide by them to some extent.

Trust me, folks the average amerikan has become, or was born, depending on their age, completely and utterly desensitized as to where, when or how foodstuffs or their consumer goods are made or by whom. I mean, it is the end of empire, so what else would the 'good' people of the USSA be thinking?

Nothing wrong with buddhism per se, but very little there about self-defense. The symbol Great Red Dragon simply means its bigger than anything anyone has seen before, Red is for the innocent blood that's spilt, and Dragon means Serpent, Snakes In Suits, etc. The 1889 author was trying to wake up folks to learn to defend themselves, just like the Buddhist monks at Shaolin Temple.  They got tired of being lied-to, stolen-from and murdered. The real question is whether folks wake up in time. My task is only that the book doesn't remain obscure.  The University of California scanned it, the link to it is at http://GreatRedDragon.com, and there's no ads, no tricks, no signups and the book is free.

that's awful. i prefer that they work as ladybois and hookers, much more suited to the 21st century labor market and who can resist their smiles.

I quit eating shrimp years ago when I found out that most Asian shrimp farms are using human sewage settlement ponds outside of major cities. The sewage is the nutrients the shrimp feed on. The shrimp industries know Americans will never ask about it, as long as the sign out front says "All you can eat shrimp, $9.99"

This has nothing to do with Wallmart or the  US. Nothing new here. This slavery in Thailand is tolerated by their government for years. What do people expect when they pay 60 cents for a can of tuna. This is their competitive advantage and misfortune for migrants sold as cattle from boat to boat.
