Navy's New, "Truly Unstoppable" Warship Breaks Down Three Weeks After Launch

Tyler Durden's picture

Here’s a dramatic video of the USS Milwaukee, the Navy's newest Freedom-class littoral combat ship, charging along at 45 knots (note the epic musical score):

That’s from acceptance drills during October when the ship's crew was described by Commander Mark Haney as 'truly unstoppable.’

Fast forward to Friday and this was the scene as the Milwaukee was towed more than 40 nautical miles to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, Virginia.

As it turns out, the Milwaukee is ‘truly unstoppable’ unless “fine metal debris” accumulates in the lube oil filter. If that happens, the vessel apparently goes from “unstoppable” to “unusable,” and must be towed to port.

According to NavyTimes, “the ship suffered an engineering casualty while transiting from Halifax, Canada, to Mayport, Florida, and ultimately its home port of San Diego.” Here’s more:

Problems with the propulsion plant began almost as soon as Milwaukee got underway from Halifax. The ship’s computer system triggered an alarm and the ship called away an engineering casualty.

Engineers cleaned out the metal filings from the lube oil filter and locked the port shaft as a precaution. In the early hours of Friday morning, the ship was conducting steering tests and lost lube oil pressure in the starboard combining gear due to the presence of the same metal filings in that filter.

The ship then dropped anchor while the engineers worked on the system. By mid-morning, the salvage ship Grapple rendezvoused with Milwaukee and connected a towing hawser line for the trip back to Little Creek.

John McCain was note happy. "Reporting of a complete loss of propulsion on USS Milwaukee (LCS 5) is deeply alarming, particularly given this ship was commissioned just 20 days ago,” everyone's favorite Senate warhawk said. “U.S. Navy ships are built with redundant systems to enable continued operation in the event of an engineering casualty, which makes this incident very concerning."

According to the Navy, "the Milwaukee is a fast, agile, focused-mission platform designed for operation in near-shore environments yet capable of open-ocean operation" - or not, apparently. And more: "It is designed to defeat asymmetric "anti-access" threats such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface craft."

That sounds pretty impressive, so perhaps someone should ask Stephanie C. Hill, vice president of Ship & Aviation Systems for Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training business what went wrong. Here's how Hill described the vessel when it was commissioned in November:

“The USS Milwaukee is a warship with capabilities unlike any others. The entire Lockheed Martin-led LCS industry team is proud to deliver USS Milwaukee to the crew who will bring this great ship to life to participate in the defense of our great nation.”

(crew members board the Milwaukee at its commissioning)

We're sure someone at Putin’s new multi-billion, National Control Defense Center got a kick out of this.

Because there's not much more we could add to make this any more amusing than it already is, we'll siimply close with one last quote, this one from the Honorable Ray Mabus, secretary of the Navy:

"The spirit of the people of Wisconsin is evident in the work of the shipbuilders whose tireless efforts have brought the soon-to-be USS Milwaukee to life. It is this spirit that will live on through this ship as it carries the name Milwaukee across the globe and helps ensure our Navy and Marine Corps remain the most formidable expeditionary fighting force the world has ever known."

It has impacted me little, in fact, companies hire me to train their H1B visa workers because they don't come with the skillsets they should. Some are capable, but many are far less capable than the average American born workers whose jobs they take for 2/3 the pay. Companies pay for their lack of experience, knowledge, communication skills, and technical intuition, but many of those losses don't appear on accounting ledgers so everybody thinks they are better off. I've seen design mistakes by inexperienced foreign workers that have been simply stunning. Some of my work involves forensic study of such failures to see why they occurred. So I can afford having lunch served to me, and the view from Grandpa's basement is actually spendid.

oh please, the vast majority of native american workers are a disabled fat tub of lard that can barely maintain independence of social disability. those that maintain any semblence of health scramble into management asap because the stresses of work are too severe for long-term. that's why you need those h1b visas. their bodies are able to tolerate the stress, while american workers, having been raised on doritos, fluoridated water, and other franken-nutrients, are too sick.

and now that common core (ie, the federal gubmint) has taken over local education and personal health via obamacare you can be assured the native american will be needing a football helmet and a h1b visa personal care assistant to wipe the drool off him and change his diaper.

"Whew...wasn't Windows OS this time."

Whooaa... slow down there dude. It may have been a Windows OS system failure at opening a small trap-release flap in the rear of the oil filter which expunges the metal filings down a chute and then into a trash can which has "Linux" stamped on the side.

Pleeeaaase, let's not be so hasty ;-)

LCS is totally absurd and is a unqiue solution to the US, contrary to any other military vessel in the world ...

In fact, it is an underarmed frigate with an oversized very expensive machinery for achieving a motorboat speed (for twice the speed you need at least four times the power thus it uses the same double turbines as a Zumwalt class destroyer of 14 500 t while being only 3 500 t !!!!!!)

Thus, it is a military motorboat the size of a frigate.

And this just to fight small size inexpensive motorboats .... Totally moron.

All true, and probably said earlier in this thread, but have you ever considered the possibility that ISIS will capture these ship like they did DOD issued toyotas, Air Jotdans, Humvees, M1s, small arms, and hollywood quality production studios?

They capture one of these babies. Get all excited, race out into the ocean, engines break down, self stranding/burial at sea, according to muslim tradition just  like OBL?

Don't be silly! Obama's just a talking head. Assigning blame to him is just like blaming the news anchor for the news. Obama is a dolt; his predecessor was an oaf and the one before him (the one with the cast iron wife) was the apotheosis of trailer trash.

The American/NATO military has been a soft machine since. . .well, forever. It's the Money River. Fat cats and flat cats can take their buckets down to the Money River and dip them in whenever they want to. Bombs are the ultimate consumer good: use one once and you gotta buy another one. Combat troops are a way to solve the over-population problem. It's a big-dick contest for everyone with miniature willies.

Stop blaming Obama or Bush or Big Bill! They're mere diversions. Instead, check out the man behind the curtain.

One thing you have to admire about the military is it's maintainence program. They track every part failure and those that fail to meet expectations are re-engineered, over and over again. They can take equipment that is a joke because of it's constant failure, like the Osprey and make it reliable. Not cheap, but then they aren't paying for it. lol

I hope that $681.25 million per ship* includes free towing for the first 100 miles. These engine/driveline problems are a recurring problem. That's extremely troubling because the Pentagon paid at least 10X what a shipping company would be charged by a commercial shipyard for a much larger freighter or tanker ship.

*2016 $21.8 billion "sea frame" cost for 32 ships through about 2019 including inflation. However, the Pentagon claims $479 million per ship. I can't account for the discrepancy. The mission package (guns, missiles, sensors, etc.) costs are another $7.2 billion or $22.5 million each.

They scrapped a warship, the USS Guardian, a reconfigured at great expense PLYWOOD MINESWEEPER built to withstand direct mine hits and keep floating to protect a small section of reef thousands of miles from nowhere in the middle of thousands of miles of reef.

ACV ship value $1 billion-It was intelligence gathering, (Muslim targets)

Replacement cost?

BTW the ship could have been yanked off by a tug, it was ordered scuttled on the reef, then dismantled in the "most expensive way possible" and everybody involved PROMOTED.

....they probably sold off all the electronics to the Chicoms off the dock too.

Let see...

1. Stealth function. What stealth functions? Tou have computer aboard that ship right? You have electricity cable right? So you don't think ELINT satellites can't pickup that RF emissions? Are you really that stupid? Have you heard L-He cooled josephson transistor LNA??

2. Your stealth ship don't use RADAR for navigation, surveillance, mine detections, close range defense system?? Are you really that stupid??

3. A huge metal surface (like zumwalt), no matter how you coated it with RAM paints? Still reflect A HUGE radar wave. Wspecially in the low band radar. Why do you think Moskva carries massive radar antenna for low band radar? Are you really that stupid??

4. You don't think a huge piece of metal don't absorb heat and/or retransmitted it AWAY FROM YOUR SHIP? And you don't think incoming missile couldn't detects this HEAT SOURCES from 50 km's away? Are you really that stupid??

Have you ever heard a SINGLE PHOTON QUANTUM WELL IMAGE SENSOR?

5. That HUGE BLADES CHURNING OCEAN WATER (even when you use JET PUMP TYPE of propulsion), you still generates A HUGE WAKE WAVES OF OCEAN CURRENTS!! Why do you think Russian torpedoes use this WAKES WAVE to guide itself to its target? Again, are you really that stupid??

6. Detecting silent subs (especially DIESEL SUBS. Diesel subs are MUCH QUITER THAN NUKES SUBS. Cause you don't operates coolant turbo pumps for nukes cooling waters. Even on standby? Nuke pellets still bleeds heats. And you need to continously cools this nukes pelets fuels)? Silent subs of todays? Generates LESS NOISE, than oceans waves. How do you detect something that are MORE SILENT, than your BACKGROUNDS NOISE? Are you really that stupid??

I can go more if you like. Judging for the cluelessness of those praising that american junks, you are not even worthy to be taught.

So, i stop here.
