ISIS Twitter Handles Traced To UK Government By Hackers

Tyler Durden's picture

There’s no shortage of speculation about the possible role the West plays in funding, arming, and otherwise assisting Islamic State.

The theories range from the outright conspiratorial (the CIA created and to this day supports the group) to the probable (the US and its allies saw the establishment of a Salafist principality in Syria as a potentially destabilizing event for the Assad government and so initially encouraged Islamic State’s rise, only to face the worst case of blowback the world has ever known).

Recent revelations about Turkey’s role in facilitating Islamic State’s 45,000 b/d illicit oil trade have only added fuel to the fire and little by little, the Western public is starting to wake up to the fact that ISIS is more than the progeny of Abu-Mus'ab al-Zarqawi - it’s an entity that enjoys a great degree of state sponsorship.

The question is this: which states ultimately participate in the conspiracy?

One way to track down possible collaborators would be to go unit by unit through the network of regional affiliates that comprise Islamic State’s vast propaganda machine:

The group should have a sizeable digital footprint given how active its followers are on Twitter and given the fact that ISIS distributes some 40 pieces of propaganda each day in various formats, most of which is disseminated on the web.

With that in mind, we bring you an interesting story from The Mirror who reports that “a number of Islamic State supporters' social media accounts are being run from internet addresses linked to the UK Department of Work and Pensions.”

“A group of four young computer experts who call themselves VandaSec have unearthed evidence indicating that at least three ISIS-supporting accounts can be traced back to the DWP's London offices,” the paper says, adding that “at first glance, the IP addresses seem to be based in Saudi Arabia, but upon further inspection using specialist tools they appeared to link back to the DWP.”

The Mirror did its own investigating and found that the IP addresses in question were sold by the British government as part of a larger deal to two Saudi Arabian firms.

“After the sale completed in October of this year, they were used by extremists to spread their message of hate,” the paper concludes.

Asked why the addresses still pointed back to the British government (which, you're reminded, is bombing the ISIS home office in Raqqa), an “expert” told The Mirror that the “records of the addresses had not yet been fully updated.”

As for the UK government, here’s the official line:

“The government owns millions of unused IP addresses which we are selling to get a good return for hardworking taxpayers.

"We have sold a number of these addresses to telecoms companies both in the UK and internationally to allow their customers to connect to the internet.

"We think carefully about which companies we sell addresses to, but how their customers use this internet connection is beyond our control."

An article that appeared on Medium yesterday lumps VandaSec in with several other hacker groups who have answered Anonymous' call to wage cyber war on Baghdadi's caliphate. "Operation ISIS (OpISIS) is a project, launched by Anonymous hacktivists, for the purpose of countering terrorist activities online," Canidce Lanier writes. "Over time, there have been various Anonymous factions involved in OpISIS, including GhostSec, Binary Sec, VandaSec and CtrlSec."

For the punchline, we go to Huffington Post:

UK security minister John Hayes has said he is "grateful" for the actions of hackers including Anonymous who have targeted Islamic State.

The minister was asked by Keith Vaz, the chairman of the committee. "A lot of radicalisation happens online. Are you grateful from the support you receive from online activist groups that seek to take down the Twitter accounts of Daesh supporters?

Hayes told the MPs the activitiy of radical Isamist groups online was "immense". He added: "I am grateful for any of those who are engaged in the battle against this kind of wickedness."

That was three weeks ago. We wonder if Hayes is still "grateful."

Wow! Moar coincidences, just like trucks from Texas being shipped to ISIS via Turkey! If I were the conspiratorial type, I might start to think maybe the West is directly involved in supporting ISIS.

Good thing I'm not the conspiratorial type. Whew, that was a close one! Now back to the Kardashians. There's a rumor that Kim's ass is still as wide as a tractor, and I need to know if it's true.

Dunno why but this reminds me of a TV sketch I saw some years ago.

A rich old retired army colonel staggers down the staircase in the morning and sees the butler. He asks:

Colonel: er ..er ..er What's the time ..er Higgins?

Higgins: It's 8 o'clock Sir. Would you like the usual? Whisky and soda?

Colonel: er ..er ..er  No higgins. It's far too early for soda ..er.

Higgins: Very well Sir.

Revealed: Assad Buys Oil From ISIS.

We know ISIS has a discreet arrangement with a neighbor, but it’s not Turkey. The Syrian regime has done business with ISIS from day one, just as it did with al Qaeda’s Nusra Front and other rebels who took over energy assets early in the war. I had a social media guy over who is trying to sell me a SM tracking module that works like this:

1. I can track anybody in a 5 mile radius who has a smartphone and see everything he posts on SM.

I get the list of all the hashtags used and who they are.

Then, I can add them in my boost lists and track them and their friends through their hashtags as fingerprints.

And this is good in a exhebition where I want to know who's who.

But it doesn't end there!!!

I get all their pictures and I get all the brands they are surrounded with and I get the overview. It does that by analyzing every picture the have and send. I get access to all the cookies on you phone, connected tablet or pc... it just doesn't end.

And that shit is so precise... we did the test and that software found everything, even those brands we could hardly see on the photo's. And it recognises products also. It's fucking weird. 30K for the software.

Now...

That's a commercial product... imagine what the government has...

Privacy? HELL!! You phone isn't just a spycam, it's more like you're ex wife you lived with for 20 years spilling the beans!

And what to do with all the data? You can create any report you want in a nice simple overview, cataloging everybody and you can zoom into anybody who you want.

I was thinking that this isn't marketing anymore... it's the gestapo, kgb, cia and all the rest combined in a commercial tool.

Freaky. And you wouldn't believe the companies these guys sold their software to! Their reference list is hughe!!

BULLSHIT. Name this supposed commercial software that lets you see all the brands the social media user is "surronded with". How would a piece of software now that you're walking through a mall, using Facebook, and suddenly you walk by a Victorias Secret boutique and this software would let you know the person you are "tracking" just walked by a Victorias Secret store?

Complete bullshit...

Sorry buddy but you are WRONG.

Go and download "Shopkick" then sign-up, and go to the mall. SOMEHOW this application KNOWS when you enter the store and gives you credit for visiting that store. This is a bullshit shopping app and it can do this. And it's right there in the app store.

Tue, 12/15/2015 - 21:51 | 6928490 alphahammer
alphahammer's picture

Again. BULLSHIT.

If you use Shopkick and trigger the beacons that EACH STORE has set up -- with Shopkick -- then you are using a closed system. It only works within a store and it reports to the store owner --  and not some third party application that others could use to track people like he suggested above. Furthermore, you (the individual) need to download and permission the Shopkick app to work in their beacon system.

Dude above said that this "software" he could use would let him know about ANY brands the person he was tracking was near. That would have to mean a larger system that would have beacons everywhere and they would all link and report to whatever system could give him this information. The problem with that is this "system" doesn't exist.

There is no current way a piece of commercial software could tell some other random person that you just walked by a watch case that had TAG Heuer, Rolex and Bulgari watches in it. Thats what he said it could do. The permissioning for a system like this would be monumental and the civil liberties people would have exposed and shut this down a long long time ago...

Doesn't exist.

Who said anything about the software knowing what products they happened to walk past?

It captures their sent photos, analyzes them and finds the brands and products in those photos.

People are going to send photos of themselves (wearing brands they like) or photos of products they like. That provides an insight into their commercial habits.

The system you describe is not the system that was described to you.

What you are describing is an NSA trawl net that would collect every piece of data available, most of it useless.

RFID chips can be used in this way - you walk through a field that activates the chip (paywave technology). That TAG watch display would know you just walked past with an RFID chip in your pocket and could send you 50% off coupon. Its not a huge leap of imagination to have a system that could intercept that exchange. Did you want to buy a TAG watch? or did you just get another spam email?

Compare the commercial value of that exchage with the value of knowing a persons intimate prior brand selection choices, brands they have already purchased.

Who would be a better sales target for that TAG watch? A random passerby? Or someone with a TAG watch poster visible through the doorway in a provocative bathroom selfie snapchatted to a "bae"?

Now put aside the commercial benefits, and consider the nefarious possibilities.

This stuff does exist, and no doubt governments have a few upgrades on what you or I might be able to access.

CELLULAR EXPLOITATION ON A GLOBAL SCALE: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE CONTROL PROTOCOL

Since the introduction of the smart phone, the issue of control has entered a new paradigm. Manufacturers and enterprises have claimed control over not just how your phone operates, but the software that is allowed to run on it. However, few people know that Service Providers have a hidden and pervasive level of control over your device. These hidden controls can be found in over 2 billion cellular devices worldwide. Organizations have been quietly deploying these controls in smart phones, feature phones, basebands, laptops, embedded M2M devices[...]

Was talking to a guy I hadn't seen for quite a while.

He asked me for my cell number.

I told him that I'd have a cell number when I'm IN one and not before.

I refuse to pay for a device that spies on me and reports back to who the fuck knows 24/7

Sometimes it's inconvenient, but that's a price worth paying, IMHO.

I, for one, believe the british government here.

Basically, a guy finds out the IP addresses used to tweet (almost any kid who is into IT can do this very easily with the Twitter API, you don't need to be a genious or a very good hacker), and passes it to the The Mirror, which is a tabloid, don't forget that. Then, The Mirror goes to a lookup website to check those addresses, and find out that they belong to the british DWP, and in some other tools they say that they belong to a Saudi company. So, of course, they go for the old records, polish a bit the story and publish it like some major news. Journalism at its best!!!!

Neither do I. But trying to create a link between the UK government and ISIS because some ISIS propaganda is spread via some IP addresses the UK government recently sold to a Saudi company is a far stretch.

Do ISIS really have a problem spreading their propaganda from the about 4 billion other IPv4 addresses available? Not really.

If we can conclude anything from this, it would be yet another indication that the Saudis support ISIS.

Tyler: "The theories range from the outright conspiratorial (the CIA created and to this day supports the group) to the probable (the US and its allies saw the establishment of a Salafist principality in Syria as a potentially destabilizing event for the Assad government and so initially encouraged Islamic State’s rise [...]"

I'm not sure too many people around these parts would agree with that trivialisation of the role that the CIA and US.gov have played in ISIS.

What is the basis of the opinion that one "theory" is more probably than the other, right?

This is the same belief system (religion) which states that the official US Government conspiracy theory about the 9/11 attacks is more credible than the other theories that were put forth.  It rests on "authority" and dares skeptics to question it.

The US Government conspiracy theorists that created the 9/11 fairy tale believe they are clever, because they have labeled the skeptics as the ones coming up with crazy theories.

This authoritarian rationale is wearing thin, as can be seen with this present fuckwittery.

Indeed. People have an in-built desire to believe "officialdom" and .gov takes advantage of that by presenting their case as plausible deniability. This challenges disbelievers to produce irrefutable evidence to disprove it. That is rarely possible.

Please...

Look at what this extremely qualified investigative reporter says about this "9/11" inside job bullshit. But first look at his credentials.

----

George Knapp is a two-time Peabody Award winner as well as a 19-time Emmy Award-winning journalist whose reporting on Nevada’s infamous Area 51 military base was selected by UPI as Best Individual Achievement by a Reporter (1989).

Other awards include the Associated Press’s Mark Twain Award for news writing and the Edward R. Murrow Award for Investigative Reporting. George is an anchor and reporter for the CBS affiliate KLAS-TV in Las Vegas and he also writes a weekly column for a Las Vegas newspaper.

----

On this, the thirteenth anniversary of the attacks on 9/11, we tone things down just a bit with an exclusive interview with acclaimed broadcast investigative journalist, George Knapp. Being no stranger to all types of government conspiracies and coverups, while also being a highly award-winning investigator, George provides a unique and seldom heard perspective on 9/11 conspiracy theories. We close the video with some powerful, rarely-seen footage of the attack on the World Trace Center.

+1000 smacker.

Don't underestimate the role of the CIA in world affairs.

I woulnd't call it outright conspiratorial, when the CIA overtrew Mossadegh in Iran in 1953, Arbenz in Guatemala in 1954, Indonesia in 1958 placing Sukarno under house arrest for the rest of his life, Cuba 1959 with the infamous failed Bay of Pigs invasion, the killing of Patrice Lumumba in 1961 in Congo and subsquent placing of nepotist Mobuto, in power. We also witnessed the brutal killing of Ngo Dinh Diem in South Vietname 1963, the sucessful overthrow of democratically-elected government of Brazil, headed by President João Goulart in 1964, Chile with Salvador Allende, Afghanistan 1979, Poland 1989, the contras scandal in South America, cocaine trafficking, I could be here all day....

The CIA was even involved in overthrowing former (and present) allies like France. President Charles de Gaulle, which in the crisis of May 1958, was trying to finish the war in Algeria, was the target of a coup d'etat led by Pierre Lagaillarde that was heavily backed by the CIA. Gaulle, being a french WWII hero, avoided the bloody coup, by going live on national TV and speaking to is fellow contrymen, urging them to "take arms and lead the streets" to avoid a military showdown in Paris. More than 2 million frenchman came out to the streets of Paris. There's documents proving back-channel conversations during those two turbulent years between Kennedy (US President at the time) and De Gaulle, where Kennedy specifically says "I'm not responsible for my own inteligence agency", which was an ominous sign for the remainder of his mandate.

Nice info. There is probably no organisation in the world - supported and allowed by .gov - that is more criminal than the CIA.

What they are not involved in probably isn't worth getting involved in: arms running, drug trafficking, money laundering, assassination, murder. And the list goes on.

In a BBC interview a few years ago with a CIA operative, I watched him admit that "nobody" is beyond their reach if said person was acting against (what the CIA perceive to be) the interests of the United States. When asked if that included for example, the POTUS, he replied "nobody".

Same thing with Britain's MI5 & MI6.

Wed, 12/16/2015 - 10:40 | 6930160 Frederico
Frederico's picture

Well of course nobody is beyond reach, specially the President of the United States.

And the ultimate proof of that statement is that Kennedy was assissinated by the CIA.

William Harvey, which was responsible for the CIA assassination team created by Dules (one that included famous European assassins QJ-WIN and WI-ROGUE, which were involved in some of the high profile killings for the agency in other countries), was in Dallas.

At the time he was stationed in Rome (Summer of 1963), after a few months before scheming with the Pentagon to send a series of raiding parties into Cuba at the height of the missile crisis to pave way for the military invasion that administration hard-liners hoped was imminent (defying the Potus all the while). The Kennedy's went balistic, but Harvey's protectors acted quickly before they could ax him, so he was sent to Rome, by James Angleton. He was spotted by his then deputy Mark Wyatt, on a flight to Dallas, which according to Mark himself, he never understood, nor Harvey explained.

Besides that, Howard Hunt another CIA operative (the same Howard Hunt later implied in the Watergate scandal, as one of the "plumbers"), mentioned to his son in his final years (through written accounts, and video interviews) that he was called to a CIA miami safehouse by Frank Sturgis in 63, to discuss with David Philips (the counterintelligence specialist who had worked on the Guatemala coup and the bay of pigs invasion) and David Morales, which was to be an "off-the-board" operation, which soon became clear was to assassinate President Kennedy. Morales and Sturgis referred to the operation as the "Big Event".

Also Allen Dulles, which by then (1963) had already been push to early "retirement" by Kennedy, hunkered down (for unknown reasons) at a secret CIA facility in nothern Virginia countryside, known officially as Camp Peary, but within the Agency as "the Farm".

He had no formal role in government for 2 years, and the farm was not a club for CIA retirees. It was a bustling clandestine center that Dulles had inaugurated himself soon after taking over as CIA chief. This is the CIA command post that the "retired" Dulles situated himself from Friday, November 22 through Sunday, November 24 - a highly eventful weekend during which Oswald was arrested and questioned, Kennedy's body was flown back to Washington and subjected to an autopsy riddled with irregularities, and Oswald was gunnned down in the basement of the Dallas police station by a shady nightclub owner.

I would also recommend you to read De Gaulles version of the events to his information minister at the time (Alain Peyrefitte) but to save you time I will post just an excerpt of it:

"What happened to Kennedy is what nearly happened to me, his story is the same as mine. It looks like a cowboy story, but its only an OAS story (Secret Army Organization). The security forces were in cahoots with the extremists".

"Do you think Oswald was a front?" Peyrefitte asked de Gaulle

"Everything leads me to believe it. They got their hands on this communist who wasn't alone, while still being one. He had a sub par intellect and was an exalted fanatic - just the man they needed, the perfect one to be accused... The guy ran away, because he probably became suspicious. They wanted to kill him on the spot before he could be grabbed by the judicial system. Unfortunately, it didn't happen exactly the way they planned it would...But a trial, you realize, is just terrible. People would have talked. they would have dug up so much. They would have unearthed everything. Then the security forces went looking for [a clean-up man] they totally controlled, and who couldn't refuse their offer, and that guy sacrificed himself to kill the fake assassin - supposedly in defense of Kennedy's memory. Baloney! Security forces all over the world are the same when they do this kind of dirty work. As soon as they succeed in wiping out the false assassins, they declare that the justice system no longer need to be concerned, that no further public action was needed now that the guilty prepetrator was dead. Better to assassinate an innocent man than to let a civil war break out. Better an injustice than disorder. America is in danger of upheavals. But you'll see. All of them together will observe the law of silence. They will close ranks. They'll do everything to stifle any scandal. They will throw Noah's cloak over these shameful deeds. In order to not lose face in front of the whole world. In order not to risk unleashing riots in the United States. In order to preserve the union and to avoid a new civil war. In order to not ask themselves questions. They don't want to know. They don't want to find out. They won't allow themselves to find out."

During the drug wars we found alphabet soup agencies knee deep in drugs and the regimes that exported them.

You can apply the same model to "terror" in that our biggest "allies" - like the Saudis franchise Salafism like Starbucks and Subway - with our permission and acceptance.

The idea that intel agencies twerk terrorist propaganda for OUR consumption to keep the imminence of war in the headlines is not just unsurprising but necessary given the stakes.

IP's can be spoofed.  A compromised machine can act as a proxy.  Many ways to manipulate.  Its the path (route) that needs to followed.  Did it traverse  a router within the UK domain? What is the geolocation of the IP?  Better yet what is the IP that was used?  I noticed that information is absent.

Who owns the IP record is irrelevant, where it came from and the path it traversed is the clue.

Get the IP and plug it here; www.geoiptool.com  It will tell you where that machine it is located.  If it was a sold IP address that is being used by a machine in SA, then the story may hold.  If it was routed from within the UK domain, then there is a compromised machine, a rouge TOR exit server or a lie.

Ukraine to build Hongdu L-15 Light Attack Fighter in Odessa

When the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) collapsed in December 1991, its integrated military-industrial complex was shattered and split up among 15 newly independent countries. Ukraine received many significant assets, including top-notch fighter and aircraft plants as well as the USSR’s most advanced shipyards at Mykolaiv, where the Soviet Union’s aircraft carriers were built. Now China is seeking to begin construction of light attack aircraft at a Ukrainian defense industry facility, the first time that China has engaged a significant portion of the former Soviet military-industrial complex.

If Ukraine joins the American camp through EU and NATO and the American camp is carving out a war against China, it makes sense to know the facility and what they are capable of. When they know what they want, they'd probably find a reason to leave when the war is near. From where i sit, a war between the American camp and China is undesirable so if that Ukrainian adventure makes that more difficult, I am all for it. But of course it's speculation, like absence of info feeds speculation.
