Star Wars Smashes Opening Weekend Box Office Record, But Will It Be Enough?
This weekend the force was strong with thirty (and forty, and fifty) year-olds, wishing to awaken memories of their youthful days with an admirable redo of the first Star Wars movie, first released nearly 40 years ago. But the force has never been stronger with Disney which is expected to rake in a record-breaking $238 million in opening weekend box office sales in the US and Canada, and a near-record $279 million overseas, a grand total of well over half a billion around the globe.
That is just the beginning of an epic annuity created by Disney under director J.J. Abrams. As the WSJ notes, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" isn't just a hit, but the spark Disney needs for years of sequels, toys, videogames, television series, theme-park attractions and more that it is planning or already producing."
Although it has been a decade since the last "Star Wars" movie, Disney and Mr. Abrams’ has to revive a franchise that has been largely dormant since the release of “Return of the Jedi” in 1983. A trio of prequels—produced by then-independent Lucasfilm between 1999 and 2005 and directed by George Lucas—performed well financially but were largely scorned by fans, who considered them inferior to the original trilogy. However, with the new Star Wars, Disney has a sure hit on its hands, and the only question is just how far will it go?
The "Star Wars" sequel easily routed the prior record for a domestic movie opening of $209 million set by “Jurassic World” in June, and caps the Top 5 of biggest weekend box-offices, all attained in recent years by fantasy-fiction films ranging from Iron Man 3, to the original Avengers and its "Age of Ultron" sequel:

The movie also set new opening weekend records in the U.K., Germany, Australia, Russia, and 14 other countries. It wasn't a smash hit everywhere, though, and produced less than "sensational" ticket sales in countries such as Brazil, Japan and Mexico, while it underperformed in South Korea, where a more popular local film also was released at the same time.
Still, the only reason the Star Wars sequel may have failed to achieve the biggest international opening of all time, is because it has yet to open in China: the Chinese release is delayed to January next year as all quota slots for imported movies are taken for this year.
How did the watching public react to the movie? According to Dow Jones, there was little disappointment with U.S. moviegoers giving it an average grade of A, according to market research firm CinemaScore, mirroring its very strong reviews and boding well for word-of mouth.
On Friday, 63% of the audience was male, but by Saturday that percentage dropped to 58% as the fanboy-driven early crowds started to broaden, said Dave Hollis, executive vice president of distribution at Disney’s movie studio. “Seeing the way younger audiences and women are responding bodes really well for the future of the franchise,” Mr. Hollis said.
“The Force Awakens” was designed to emulate the original in style and substance. It returned stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill to their original roles and introduced a new cast of Jedi Knights, storm troopers and imperial officers led by Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.
Coming out of a screening at the TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, stay-at-home mother Jessica Sisoer, who had waited in line 12 days with other hard-core fans, said the new movie “felt like going home” because it reminded her so much of the original trilogy.
Among the factors that will determine if it rivals the all-time global box-office record of $2.79 billion held by “Avatar” is whether strong word-of-mouth draws infrequent moviegoers, how many times fans return to theaters to watch again. The biggest question mark, however, is how the movie will perform in China, the world’s second biggest movie market, where “Star Wars” isn't well known because the original trilogy was never released there.
As DJN adds, the film, which cost a little over $200 million to produce, is now poised to gross well over $1 billion, and could go much higher, particularly with people expected to take time off from work during the holidays.
And yet, despite the movie euphoria, Disney stock tumbled on Friday, closing down 4% at the days lows, following a surprising downgrade by BTIG's Rich Greenfield, who downgraded DIS stock from Neutral to Sell on Friday, lobbing a $90 price target, with the thesis that "Disney management made a fundamental mistake by overpaying for sports rights based on overly aggressive multichannel video subscriber projections. Not only did Disney overpay for individual sports rights packages, they also acquired too many sports rights in an effort to prevent new competitors such as Fox Sports 1 and NBC Sports from growing stronger. As a result, we believe Disney’s cable network profitability will meaningfully underperform investor expectations – with cable networks representing 44% of Disney’s segment operating income. We are now estimating that Disney’s FY2017 cable network operating income will be DOWN year-over-year, with total Disney FY2017 operating income flat."
Not even expectations of record global box office receipts by Star Wars were enough to appears Greenfield:
While we believe the strength of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (estimated at $2.6 bn in global box office) will lead to Disney modestly exceeding consensus expectations for fiscal (Sept) 2016 earnings, we now believe consensus earnings are too high for FY2017 and far too high for FY2018. We believe if Star Wars Episode VII does not exceed $2.0 billion in worldwide box office revenue, Disney will miss our FY2016 and consensus earnings estimates as well.
Given that we now expect Disney EPS growth to slow dramatically and miss current Street consensus EPS expectations in both FY2017 and FY2018, we believe its current multiple is unwarranted. We are now forecasting EPS growth of just 3%-4% in FY2017 and 6% in FY2018. In turn, we are reducing our rating on Disney to SELL from Neutral with a $90 one-year price target. Our $90 one-year price target is based on a P/E of 15x FY2017, which also equates to 14x FY2018. Disney is currently trading at 20x FY2016, 19x FY2017 and 18x FY2018 based on our estimates.
- In March 2015, with Disney shares at $106, we downgraded the stock from Buy to Neutral (link), nearly five years after we put a Buy on the stock. Our downgrade was based on the view that even though consensus EPS expectations still needed to move higher, Disney shares were approaching full value.
- Despite a temporary correction in August 2015, Disney shares have continued to climb higher since our March downgrade, having notably outperformed their media industry peers over the past year and currently sitting just 7% below their all-time peak of $122. We believe Disney's outperformance has been driven by film slate excitement, most notably Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (which opened last night), despite increasing concerns facing Disney's cable network franchise.
The conclusion: "#FadetheForce: Downgrade to SELL with $90 Price Target."
In other words, not even world records may be enough for a stock priced beyond record perfection, and a very forlorn looking Luke Skywalker better have something big up his sleeves for 2017 when the next sequel, Episode VIII, is due.

Everybody spent their Christmas bonus money on a 2 hour experience, popcorn, and 3D glasses and some rich asshole board members at Disney, along with some rich asshole actors, get a half billion dollars.
Nope, not going to help GDP. The world economy is finished.
THE END
Phantom Menace sucked noodles, Attack of the Clones was OK. The third one was so unremarkable that I can't even remember its exact title. So why in the actual fuck would this Disney PC shit break records?
because Daisy Ridley is hot.
Disney's problem isn't the new Star Wars movie. It's their cable operations. They're a mess and account for about half of their revenues.
The hype and anticipation for entertainment as trite as this is befitting of our terminally imbecilic nation. A humorous "white nationalist" review of this politically-correct-sure-to-be-Oscar-winning-masterpiece can be found here...

Poor old Walt, spinning in his grave after the Tribe(tm) stole his dream out from under him. Google it, it will make you cry.

Is the Wookie black in this one to better reflect reality, or is it the same old Beige Privelage?
Saw it on opening night (only because we were invited by friends who had bought the tickets weeks ago (their son is a Star Wars fanatic).
Casting: Excellent
Acting: Very good (except for Harrisonn Ford who was excellent and carried the movie)
Special Effects & Cinamatography: Excellent
Story/Plot: Pure Shit
SPOILER ALERT!
Stop me if you've heard this before: A teenage orphan (this time female: JJ Abrams loves his role-flipping) is leading a desperate life on a desert planet until (owing to a series of impossible coincidences) an adorable droid turns up with secret plans to aid the Rebel Alliance. She leaves the planet in the Millenium Falcon and is joined by Han Solo and Chewbacca. She quickly develops Jedi powers that she never knew she had. Meanwhile, the Evil Empire (which is now called the "First Order:" sounds like an appetizer) has built another Death Star, but this one's REALLY BIG and it destroys several planets at once.
The Rebel Alliance meets in a strategy session to plot the destruction of the Death Star. Han Solo leads a ground team (including the young Jedi) to knock-out the shields so X-Wing Fighters can fly down narrow corridors and hit a tiny target in order to blow it up.
Yep, it's a straight re-make of the original Star Wars with Return of the Jedi thrown in for good measure.
However, I could probably have dealt with that if not for the most ridiculous series of impossible coincidences ever before shown on the silver screen.
I have great respect for JJ Abrams as a director, but he can't write a script or come up with a plot to save his life...
Did the new Sith Lord look like Putin?
Great analysis Pools Shark. You should be our ZH movie reviewer.

I thought it was -ok- popcorn action, but as a Star Wars movie compared to the other 6 it was pure shit. How can we even give it a grade when its a copy of the first movie?
And for all the political correct garbage, that threw me off. I almost laughed my ass off when the crybaby badguy took his mask off the first time and he looked more like a hooknosed imposing jew. He looked a lot like Marilyn Manson actually (not a positive comparison).
Ok action. Pure fucking trash beyond that.
How did the watching public react to the movie? Like a bunch of fucken retards.
Its horseshit derivative sequel. People are so quick to throw money for a nostalgia trip because everything sucks.
Basically its near repeat of a new hope.
So let me get this straight. It is NOT a continuation of the story, but a REMAKE of A New Hope?
"Is the Wookie black in this one ..."
No, the Wookie isn't in the movie. She lives in the White House with her husband.
+100
A thoughtful, accurate review of a very poor film
I'm ashamed to admit I took the family to see it because my son is a fan. We only do the movies 2-3 times a year.
I give it a C. It was the moral equivalent of reviewing career highlights at a nursing home.
More Disney garbage....
I took my son to see it only because we had a new theater with recliners.
But yeah it was basically a remake of the first two episodes. 19.00 for tickets, 12.00 for large popcorn and a medium coke. Not really worth it, but since there wont be a torrent anytime soon wth
There exists a huge class of people who don't understand how anything works. Their alarm clock, their car, their TV, their phone are all just magic boxes to them. If the light on their porch stops working, they call an electrician. They usually believe in ghosts or sky Gandalf, and magic.
"Star Wars" is by and for such people.
It is physically painful for me to watch "Star Wars" movies, and I keep bursting out with "Ah, HELL no!" or "WTF is this nonsense!". I will pause the film and comment, "Look at this robot's legs. There is no material that could withstand the leverage stress required for that POS leg to lift that torso and head frame."
We cull the inferior sheep, dogs, cattle, but every human is precious. Who else knows where that leads?
The sports bubble will start to burst as more and more people cut cable. ESPN has lost over 7 million subscribers in the last 2 years. It's only going to get worse. Pro teams are basically subsidized by cable viewers that don't even watch the games. Expect the masses to continue to cut cable.

Spoilers.
The new film is so-so, it breaks no ground a features a recycled plot. A super-weapon capable of destroying planets is operational, and fired to blast a pesky rebel planet into dust.
Alerted and spooked, the rebels realize their precious base is NEXT and dispatch fighters to blow up the planet the weapon is based on - but wait, it HAS SHIELDS, and so before the ONE VULNERABLE TARGET that when hit will blow up the planet can be blown up, a team must infiltrate and get those shields down.
There's a Empire defector that wants to abandon the Rebel Cause, but he comes back...shades of Han Solo
There's a scene where TIE Fighters are evaded by flying through metal superstructure.
There's a scene in a Cantina filled with all sorts of crazy aliens.
There's a new droid projecting critical information that it has sequestered, this time a map.
There's the Rebel command breathlessly counting down the minutes until the new super-weapon is charged, hoping for a miracle, hoping for the shield to fall, AND THE ONE ENGINEERING FLAW to go all explodey before they are incinerated.
At no point are ships launched, non-essential personnel flown off planet, or vital equipment relocated. Nope we'll just sit here, and hope.
The new Sith Lord can't fight, and loses to an untrained proto Jedi. But we don't see his body, so he'll be back.
All in all it's literally nothing you've not seen before, when it was done better. Audience response was tepid, a few aborted attempts at applause, and the end was a few claps and dead silence. I call bullshit on all the me-too! breathless reviews.
Saw it day 2, IMAX 3D, and rate it 2 of 4 stars. See it at a matinee.
You are correct. No wonder Lucas was upset with the script. Anyone could have taken the first movie's script, made a few changes and waited for the people to put their money down. This would be a great movie IF it was not just a remake. Save your money and watch the first one. The only winner in this movie is Mark Hamill: I wonder how much money he received to turn around and not have even one piece of dialogue.
Disney probably paid him scale.
you guys are correct in all matters (about the replay of #4), but it is a movie, damnit. it is all in the execution.
remember that Avatar was just as simple-minded a remake of Pochahantas, but y'all loved it anyhow.
Personaly, I thought Avatar was shit. Literally.
I want know how they bought him out for ONLY $4 B For the whole company. they can actually make that investment back unlike other buyouts of tech failures.
Great review RafterManFJ, you need to coin a gimmick like thumbs up, rotten tomatoes or something, in the spirit of ZH, perhaps you could say you give this movie a rating of "two hung bankers" out of 4.
Guillotines? Wood chippers?
This pablum is what people care about most. Getting the next saccharine tablet. Bread and circuses cubed. Not enough of the populous knows any history to see that this is the hallmark characteristic of a final stages empire. I like this quote just learned on another ZH thread:
"History doesn't repeat itself. But it rhymes." --Mark Twain
"Its like poetry, it rhymes [sort of]. Every stanza kind of rhymes with the last one. I hope it works [shrug and wince]"
-Lucas
That's what the studios like about digital projection. You can do 30,000 screens on opening weekend and make back a lot of your investment before the reviews get out. Back when film prints were $3000/pop you had to pick and choose where to show opening weekend, and of course, make a film good enough that you didn't have to trick people into watching it. All the opening weekend records are pure BS. Titanic came out back in the film days and it probably could have beaten all of these films if they could have done 30,000 screens. Oh, and $20 tickets instead of $8 fifteen years ago make a big difference.
Hollywood: Global scale Bread and Circuses that would make every Roman Emperor envy.
Yeah...Daisy was way hot for a frigid tom boy.
She was hotter than the sub-par drek that passes for plot in this piece of tedious shit though.
I watched for free and still felt ripped off.
Disney can lick my taint carbuncle.
Overfed- there were 3 others before the prequel movies you are referring to- and they were all better than the prequels. 'The Emprie Strikes Back' (second of the three) was particularly well done, almost certainly the pinnacle of the series. Watch those, then tell me what sucks and what doesn't.
The original 'Star Wars' came out in 1977. I suspect most on this board hadn't been born yet. It changed everything. Compared to other movies of it's era it was both jaw-dropping and refreshing. Even more so than the first time I heard Van Halen after suffering through the Disco era. You knew shit would never be the same after that.
I was alive to see the first one! Yesterday I downloaded all 6 in HD to my Video File Cloud service. So being off work, I watched all six, the three newest in order and then the three oldest in order.
The three newer ones all sucked to a degree. The whole thing was about chase scenes and Lazer Sword fights. But the original three offered some real story line, and The Empire Stikes Back even had some humor in it.
Great for kids. Great for basement dwelling adults who play those video warcraft things.
For thinking adults, there is not much here. Don't bother. I think little of most movies, though a few good ones slip in every year. It is in television that good drama is now home based. I like UK mini series. And some UK movies.
The "Red Riding Trilogy" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cu4h2XWzLLk Was particulary good!
I grew up on Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back. Return of the Jedi was just a sight of what was to eventually come with the prequels.
Call me what you want. I am no basement dwelling adult that's for sure.
Episode VII was excellent. I still love the Star Wars movies and story. Not everything has to be a deep intellectual experience. Some things can just be fun. This movie had all the things that made the originals great. Sometimes its fun to NOT think and just enjoy yourself.
The Red Riding trilogy was fucking great. I stumbled across them by chance. Love british movies/series. Broadchurch series is great too.
I can remember the audience reaction. It was indeed something new. People walked out of the theatre like they had been drugged (in a good way).
In the 1970s there wasn't many good movies. Most popular and "critically acclaimed" were very dark, gritty and full of moral decay. You felt depressed watching stuff like taxi driver, Chinatown and godfather.
Disney itself produced nothing worth remembering.
Saw it the other day theater was half full (smaller town, $6.00 a ticket [not kidding]) no waiting (people camped out for this?) … it was terrible. Kids wanted to leave, I couldn’t wait ‘til it was over.
Defying the laws of physics, good guys never get hit but they can take out tie-fighters 100 – 1, etc. etc.
Favorite part is when they always pull wires out of a burning control panel it always seems to get the warp drive working again – just in time of course. Somehow they can build a death star and make walking / talking robots but can’t seem to make computer guided missiles /bullets / targeting to work. But I guess they don’t need computers because they hero of the show shoots down a missile with one shot …... in a craft he has never been in before ……. Ridiculous. Liked it when I was a kid ……...
Based on all the hype, my daughter (age I was when I saw the original) got me to get advance tickets for the late showing in our small town ($6.50) It was awful. At one point I leaned over to her and said "Are you buying this?" She just shook her head. Grandma Leia and Grandpa Han go on the road to try to save their son. Oh, and get Luke's light saber to him because he must have forgot it somewhere. So was Rey Luke's daughter or what?
My daughter made a good point -- except for the old farts from the original, there was no A-list actor in the movie at all. I wonder who's breathing a sigh of relief.
$1.50 at Redbox would be fair. I should have waited.
Thank the Fed's Debt Star.
It is easy to set new 'records' every year when the cost goes up...every...year...
That's right. This is now a decent holiday splurge for the average family... not on EBT, etc. I'm serious. It's the New Normal mini-Vacation!
You can pay for movies with EBT.
EBT, we're your bread AND circus.

The Star Wars I'm waiting for is when we f*ck with Putin one more time and all hell breaks loose.
Then LA can watch all sorts of Tridents being launched . . . well unless a real "star is born" about a mile above downtown.
http://thebulletin.org/what-would-happen-if-800-kiloton-nuclear-warhead-...
After watching through Star Wars 7 I kind of hope LA gets a few stars in the sky. Probably best during Oscars so they can catch all those fucking tribesmen with their pants down.
That would be 2 hours of visual and sonic torture. I have never been able to stomach more than 10 minutes of the original one on several attempts.
I am not interested in seeing a black super-hero interjected out of pure PC. I am guessing he beds the white girl too.
In reality there are so very few black hero's -especially in the military. Most sign-up to be supply clerks, commo, or office workers. Very unrepresented in elite groups (they cannot hang) or even the Infantry (too demanding).
+1
You will be happy to note that the new PC superhero is the girl! A stronk womyn who don't need no man, and can fight and lead rebellions like all stronk womyn before in history just like The Hung Games and Diverjent. #sobrave #fuckyoudad #mudsharksinglemomma
Which Elite Unit did you Serve In? Rank? Which War Zone?
C'mon. You're not Navy, since you've overlooked BattleStation Billets.
Sure, there are a good number of sub-par and conduct case Negroes; but there are a good number of Sub-Par People of ALL RACES. I've been in a War Zone; and was selected ahead of my WHITE AND BLACK Peers for the majority of my Career for choice Commands.
My Black Uncle served in Korea and Vietnam. IIRC, he had a Purple Heart, was a sole survivor of a RPG Ambush - Twice - and retired as an E-9.
My Late Father was in the Days of the Navy when Blacks weren't allowed Combat Billets; but he served on several Subs during WWII - including the Star Boat Tautog. He was a Lookout - he TARGETED ENEMY SHIPS. He made E-5 in 23 MONTHS when people of that Rating RETIRED in that rank. He retired as a Chief (E-7) in WWII, China, Korea; and did 'Nam on Auxiliary Fleet Tankers during his 2nd 20 Year Career.
The fact that Disney - a former cartoon company, is now one of the biggest media corporations in the world is testament to our collective maturity.
who cares
I want to see the sequel of the curency wars: hike rate strikes back or backsfires
They already made that one -- it's called Episode One - The Failed Trade Negotiations.
Tarantino's newest is not great but it left this star bores rerun in the dust.
Even the comics, which were done by DARKHORSE COMICS were excellent, I will not even read any of the new ones released by MARVEL, as they took the license back. They a fucking joke, and they are with simple, shitty and re-hashed story lines.
Fuck 'em !

“The Force Awakens” was designed to emulate the original in style and substance.
Emulate my ass...they just rewrote the fucking script for Star War Episode 4...
Jar Jar Binks might have actually improved the movie...
oh, c'mon, it was only 75% a copy of #4.....there were different twists, and they played the old characters pretty well. pretty intense overall. ticket costs about the same a drink in your favorite bar -- definitely worth the $$ to see it, especially to do so before some jerk spoils the surprises for you.
edit: wow! 5 downvotes, no upvotes. you guys are not fun people, and i'm not inviting you to join me to go to the movies.
No need for the DVD, it'll be online HD in 90 days or so on putlocker. Like everything else.
Decent pirated cam just came out today.
90 days? Usually 3 (at the most)...
Take it from me, watching a CAM version of a movie is like getting drunk and hooking-up with a fat chick.

Rehashing movies is what Hollywood does best. Coming up with original ideas is hard now, how else will they get the zombies to spend their money?
Speaking of Zombies, I liked the Maze Runner as it was original, but they ruined the second with basically, a cheap plot device. Zombies, really. Come on.
One more Disney princess movie, remaking a classic with a female hero.
Coming to Red Box in 6 months. $1.50. Worth the wait.
Putlocker is free and less than that.

Btw, the force is such a powerful meme because we all sense it. George tapped a powerful element in the human psyche. Too bad it just destroyed so early in life.
Seriously, can you use EBT at a movie theatre?
Hey ... In CA Trader Joe's card reading machines have options including; credit, debit, EBT and EBT Cash
That's right, EBT Cash. Trader Joes will exchange EBT credits for Cash
'Nuff said
Families with dependent children can qualify for food stamps and cash grants. EBT cards can be used to make purchases either from food stamp account or cash account.
Trader Joes DOES NOT exchange any credits for cash, whatever you think that supposed to mean.
There's ebt cash and foods stamps.
Cash could be welfare or court demanded support. Cashed out used for whatever.
Stamps can only be used for uncooked food.
Except Hunt Bros Pizza at the corner gas station, you buy the pizza then give it back and they cook it as a courtesy.
Cooked BBQ ribs at the Kroger with orange stamp "CAN BE PURCHASED WITH FOOD STAMPS".
Do I need to go on?
the first Star Wars was kind of fun when I was 10, what fucking adult losers get off on this nonsense? Huxley would be proud of you...
I predict that this film will have no 'legs'
it is hoped for and rumoured that Disney may release to disc, the "original" unfucked with versions of the first 3 flicks; right now FOX is in overdrive to sell one more iteration of SW on disc-problem is they are using the 2010 transfer
I outgrew this nonsense long ago, Lucas and Speilberg killed American film
Lucas and Speilberg would probably agree with you (privately), but they are laughing all the way to the bank. I dare you to short Disney right now. ....double-dog-dare you, even....

$94 spent today on this with my wife and kids. Big dollars for a movie, a rare occasion. Enjoyed it.
and 6 months from now, you could have had the same experience from red box for a buck fifty and used the other 92+ bucks for a SECOND expereience with the family
You can watch Spe er, Ja, er Bond, online at cough cough now
Daughter home from college, first time we all did something together. Big breakfast, went to visit relatives, capped it off with Star Wars and tonight a very late season tree decorating. If it means anything, we got the Christmas tree for $12 as it's so late In the season. The original tag says $65. So $94 + $12 = $106 for a Star Wars and Christmas tree expenditure. Overall OK bro.
You cant sit around the fireplace and spend those two hours talking with your daughter whom you may never see again if she dies in a car accident. But you can fondly recall looking at a POS movie and spending the money not to talk to your only daughter for two hours. WIN WIN. Priceless!!
Folks like you make China great this season and a bunch of traitors in Hollywood.
Give it a rest , bitch.
It’s his family, his money, and his business. I thought the movie sucked but for the eye candy, but if he enjoyed so be it. You make a fair point about quality time but your mind is clouded by the dark side.
If you want to see a version of the "Blues Brothers" with lasers - then watch this movie.

I didn't think it was that great. I went to a late showing and fell asleep a couple times. Fin was boring. The lead actress was pretty good. The new Darth Vader Character is not interesting or deep. The new Sith Lord character is not scary or intimidating at all. Pricess Lea was old and boring and Han Solo fit his part perfectly as being geriatric. They could have wrote this story any way they wanted it. Yeah the story fits but no twists really. A good looking film but I was hoping for a super interesting new story that dovetailed with Jedi. This dovetails but I didn't think it was interesting. I will not see this movie again and will forget about it now til the next sequil comes in a couple years. Dissapointed.
Darth Emo
Even if the box office was $50Billion, Hollywood book-keeping will ensure the net profit is zero.
Example: Winston Groom's price for the screenplay rights to his novel Forrest Gump included a 3% share of the profits; however, due to Hollywood accounting, the film's commercial success was converted into a net loss, and Groom received only $350,000 for the rights and an additional $250,000 from the studio.
Forrest Gump:
Budget $55 million
Box office $677.9 million
Eddie Murphy called it 'monkey points', where only a fool would accept net profits in their contract. However, only the top of the tree actors et al are entitled to a cut of gross profits.
The music industry is even worse...
I took my son to see the movie at a locally owned renovated cinema. Good sized screens, digital projection, Sony surround sound, and $5.58 tickets before 5pm, like going back in time.
The movie wasn't that good. Just a lot of PC crap in an entertaining wrapper.
White men are evil. Black people, women, and latinos are heroes. The good white man is old and dies, cut down by his white son corrupted by white guilt.
The Hitler addressing his army complete with a seig heil was a good touch.
$5.58...??????????? it has been $18 for a regular movie for years in my neighborhood.
Truly amazing. I went to an AMC theater for one movie last year, $14 per ticket to sit in a garbage leather recliner with a terrible view of the screen. What used to be a run down third run movie theater was bought and renovated last year and I gave it a shot. It's no Cinemark IMAX, but good enough.
Of course PC shit. Guess who's owns the IP and writes and directs it.
Expensive.
I'll just wait for the VHS release...then I can get it in Salvation Army for 50 cents.
The last major Hollywood movie to be released on VHS was "A History of Violence" in 2006
this article mentions that the mouse way overpaid for sportz... they overpaid so mych that they laid off over-400 sportz babblers & take-havers from their broadcasting & writing ranks this year (and infuriatingly didn't whack mike&mike or berman).
rates at stalag mousewitzes in anaheim and orlando now make it impossible for a family of 4 to visit with less than $1000-per-day. yeah, that's totes sustainable with kingputtcare rates rising and rents n grub too...
disney dying would be awesome and couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of douchenozzles.
it is truely embarrassing to see 30 and 40 and 50 year old american men acting like little kids standing in line to watch a fantasy movie. then in an interview they will say theu have 'all the action figures and toys'...WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF
Many adults enjoy things that remind them of their youth. I see nothing wrong with it. Shove your bitter pointless opinion up your twat.
ecojoker - playing with childrens toys as an adult if not normal. i read that jonas salk invented the polio vaccine and his brother jacob salk almost invented a cure for cancer but ended up spending too much time with his my little pony collection.
I'll have you know that my My Little Pony collection keeps me out of trouble.
Get the "My little pony abattoir!"
Endless fun.
Lol...the " My Little Pony Glue Factory" ...batteries not included.
Only took one post to jump straight to bitter twat... I'm duly impressed.
Standard Disclaimer: Would probably be a great name for an energy drink for women these days:

men playing with toys if fucked up. funny how this pisses people off. the tranny metrosexual bun wearing pussyboys are upset....hahahahaha
I am 40, and I am a Star Wars fan. Nothing will beat the original three, but this one was good for what it was. I know it's politically-correct'ified, I know it is fantasy, but I have good memories of Star Wars, and I enjoyed it. No toys, though lol
No more embarrassing than grown MEN arguing over political spheres for entertainment purposes only.
Pretending to blame parties when you are clueless or afraid to identify the real source of the problem.
I saw the movie. It turned out that something from the crowd was more interesting than the movie:
Before the movie started, a woman sat to my right, and to her right was a guy who was with her. I heard her say to her friend, "I got laid last night."
Zero Hedge Posters =
"Hey notice me!!! I'm trying to get your attention by ripping on a movie! My real life sucks balls. I might get some sort of satisfaction if I find another poster to agree with me."
You must have been that guy that was guffawing and hyperventilating behind me in the theater. The same guy who thoroughly enjoyed all the awful previews and was lead around on an unthinking emotional leash. Perhaps we should envy you. I can’t get that pacified even when drunk.
It's just a movie and it definitely provides entertainment, why so much hate? Step away from the computer and go outside and make a human connection, you jobless fucktwits.
It's been a dismal year for movies - either non-stop CGI 'action' without any storyline, or politically correct movies without any action or storyline. How bad is it? Even Oscar can't find a winner. If they had a ballot choice of 'None of the Above' - that one would win by a landslide!
Yeah, and some really liberal-left movies came out this year. One movie is about a pinko leftie commie writer named Trumbo. Another movie is a documentary about an alledged rape crisis on college campuses. That narrative about a rape epidemic is false. The real problem is the reverse--male students being falsely accused of rape, and even being punished by universities via unjust procedures. Male students who have sued have won in courts of law. Another documentary is sympathetic to the CBS/Dan Rather side in the Killiam documents controversy.
If any of the above movies win an Oscar, I will not watch the Oscars anymore. And I will boycott future movies from those companies.
The opiate of the masses .... with little going on .... in their lives ?
This Star Wars movie is a statement for the liberal PC establishment.
There always has to be people who's only acheivement is being the person who "didn't like" the new Star Wars, etc... Go make a movie yourself then you fucks.
There will always be that guy that doesn't like that people don't like what he likes. Or is that too confusing...
I spend hours and hours making animation, and just to create 3 min. worth is a damn lot of work, considering that I build everything from scratch, I do not have a team or help either. And after posting and looking back at views, some people do not have even the attension span to watch 3 min. I have watched one person jump from one to the next, they just do not appreciate what goes into this proccess.
But saying this, fuck all these big million dollar brainwashing pc movies, that I can agree with.
Last time I was in a theater was for LOTR.
There are lots of great films. This isn't one of them.
"....stay at home mother...waits in line 12 days" to see movie. LMAO, is that an oxymoron?
"Still, the only reason the Star Wars sequel may have failed to achieve the biggest international opening of all time, is because it has yet to open in China..."
Then again, it may be because it's such poor grade shit that even the mega name of Star Wars can't pull in everyone. Here's a previously published review of mine:
Star Wars has sunk to new lows with this perversion, away from the original image. In the original cannon the Empire was for all intensive purposes stiff necked conservative Nazis - the Rebels were everything counter to that - drug runners, aliens and of course, non-Westerners.
The subtle multi-cultural spin was first noticeable with the introduction of Lando Calrissian and extended in Jedi with an Asian fighter pilot. Subtle, but there.
Women in the Empire had no role to play. Even in the Rebellion they played supporting roles - including Leia. Mon Mothma was the only other noticeable female and she was limited to a political role - although they did give her the title of leader of the Rebellion. Subtle again, as they gave her the highest honours, yet gave her only a bit part.
With these new films though, the subtlety has been discarded for an all out propaganda push. Rey is a female action superhero. Finn is a black stormtrooper.
Giving one of the main action roles to a woman is a complete abandonment of the subtle role Leia played in the preceding installments.
Giving the other to a black man - an ex-stormtrooper not only abandons the previous rhythms established in the original films, but makes a total farce of the Empire, who was now apparently made up of black Nazis.
The leader of the Stormtroopers - Captain Phasma - being played by a female just takes the cake. Now it's no longer the Nazis vs Reds - it's Reds vs Reds.
What the hell will come out of Hollywood next?
One could almost argue they went out of their way to destroy the genre as quickly as possible.
0 out of 10. Even "Director's Cutting" this ugly Communist garbage back to bare bones will do nothing to save it.
Well done Disney.
You forgot the part about the 'bad guy' being a new aged 'son' that's been given everything he wants and spazzes out until he gets it. My biggest problem with the show was the bad guy's hisssy fits. Then they throw a lightsaber into a woman's hands and have her deafeat this 'dark lord of the sith'. Are you fucking kidding me? Even if the white challenged guy would have 'awakened from the force' and beat the bad guy, there's no possible way a 10 minute old self realized jedi could beat a dark lord of the sith, or vise versa.
Sorry guys, the only movie that I've ever gone to see at a theater is star wars. Nothing else I've really ever gone to see, maybe 1 movie a year at a theater. So I felt I needed to add my useless piece of information.
Haven't seen it, but from the comments it seems the indoctrination of America continues.
Just took my kids to see it and it was by far the WORST Star Wars movie. One of my kids fell asleep and I almost did too.
JJ ABRAMS YOU AND DISNEY SUCK!!!!
I have been researching the reactions of people after seeing Star Wars The Force (farce?) Awakens and I have noticed that there is A LOT of vitriol and just plain dislike of this movie. The only reason it is doing well now is because fan-boy nerds are going to see this film in droves. It's not doing well because of the "genius" and/or "inspired" directing of J.J. Abrahms (note the sarcasm). It is not doing well because it is in any way an original story (can we say mostly a rip off of episode IV?) It is not doing well because of the "prolific" acting ability demonstrated by the actors. Harrison Ford himself made it very clear that he wanted nothing to do with Han Solo anymore. That's why he was killed off (in a way that was clearly ripped off from the fight scene between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader).
I will say that I do most certainly appreciate the use of practical effects by Mr. Abrahms, but that's the ONLY nice thing that I will say about him. This man is a hack, and couldn't come up with anything innovative or original even if he was held at gunpoint. It is only a matter of time before the hate gets very loud for this film. The same thing happened with the prequel films-people loved them, then hated them. This will happen with this Star Wars film, too.
Confused why the silver stormtrooper/leader thing was a woman.
Would a fascist military group that grew out of the ruins of a galactic fascist dictatorship really care about being gender positive?
I think fucking not.
Forget starwars' our fight against the real repressive empire has only just begun.
'The Force Awaken' Ahahahahahaaaaaaaaa
Any Christian know wahta it means? The force subliminal message and we are dying in queue to watch it.
Terrific.
Do not feed the trolls please, there are so happy to be noticed.
