9 Of The Top 10 U.S. Occupations Pay Miserly Wages
With Dora Mekouar of VOAnews
9 of 10 Largest US Occupations Pay Miserly Wages
Of the 10 largest occupations in the United States, only one - registered nurse - makes more than the national average when it comes to all U.S. jobs.
Nurses make $69,790 annually while the average U.S. worker makes $47,230, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bureau’s Occupational Employment Statistics program provides employment and wage estimates for more than 800 occupations nationwide.
More Americans worked as retail salespersons or cashiers in May 2014 than in any other job, accounting for about 6 percent of total U.S. employment.

The 10 largest occupations include retail salespersons and cashiers, food preparation and serving workers, general office clerks, registered nurses, customer service representatives, and waiters and waitresses. That combined group of workers accounted for 21 percent of total U.S. employment in May 2014.

The annual average wages for those largest occupations — excluding nurses — ranged from $19,110 for combined food preparation and serving workers, to $34,500 for secretaries and administrative assistants. Food preparation and serving workers also had one of the lowest paying occupations overall, as did fast food cooks ($19,030), shampooers ($19,480), and dishwashers ($19,540).
Here is the full breakdown of the top 10 occupations from the BLS:
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the highest paying jobs include certain physicians and dentists, chief executives, nurse anesthetists and petroleum engineers.
So-called STEM jobs — occupations requiring science, technology, engineering, or math-related degrees — accounted for about 6.2 percent of all U.S. jobs. There are 100 different occupations that account for the STEM jobs. Seven of the 10 largest STEM occupations were related to computers.
Ninety-three of the 100 STEM occupations had mean wages that were significantly above the U.S. jobs average. The highest paying STEM occupations included petroleum engineers ($147,520) and physicists ($117,300). The lowest paying STEM jobs included agricultural and food science technicians ($37,330) and forest and conservation technicians ($37,990).
Overall, the most lucrative U.S. jobs included management, legal, and computer and mathematical occupations.
The lowest paying included food preparation and serving, personal care and service, and farming, fishing, and forestry occupations. Each had an annual mean wage of about $25,000 or less.

"food science technician?"
"Put the ketchup there then close the bun..."
Donde es! No espitto en el Chipolte! Madre dios!
True story: About 17 eons ago, first job when freshman in HS. Worked as a busboy in fancy restaurant in Des Moines. The head waitress in the cafe area, likely a drunk and she molested high school guys (No, unfortunately) when she waited on people she didn't like would spit on their food. Guy would order pie a la mode. Big hocker on the pie, covered with whipped cream and/or under the ice cream. Whadda gal, whadda gal, whadda gal!
This is why I'd rather have robots do the cooking and the serving...
"FT2439, is that hydraulic fluid I taste on my patti melt?"
Yeah, but robots spit microchips.
This is why I treat wait staff like royalty. Never send food back, ever. Smiles and quips all around. I live in dread fear of a warm spit supplement in my biscuits and gravy ever since I saw the movie Casino.

On a side note Knuks, where were all of the hot, slutty teachers that should've molested us when we were in H.S.? All of my teachers looked like Ms. Doubtfire. We were cheated!
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/former-teacher-haeli-noelle-wey-arrested-over-alleged-relationships-with-teens/
Agreed.
Where were they when I was young?
Oh yeah.... Probably not born yet. Er .... We got cheated. But shop was good. I still got the "baseball bat" I turned on the lathe.
LOL mine was the aluminum ashtray
Holy fuck! I checked your link. There's a portfolio of 45 women teachers who have been charged for having sex with students, some as young as 13 years old.
I'm speechless. I don't know if this is something recent over the past 20 years or what?
I'm wondering if the reason these women are so disfunctional is because their fathers weren't in the picture.
When I was 14 years old in the mid 1980's, I only knew of 5 kids in my class who came from divorced families. I think that number has risen dramatically. Seems that in certain cases when girls don't have fathers in their lives, they live promiscous lives.
NL, I'm approximately your age. I think this is all emblematic of the breakdown of American society. I make wise about this stuff for fun, but this kinda shit really isn't cool.
There was an attractive 30-40 something English teacher at my first H.S. who had a rep for screwing football players, and the Girl's BB Coach knocked up one of his players. He was quietly dismissed. When I was at another school, one of my friends who was on the football team accidentally pulled a boy porn mag out from under the head coach's sofa during some BBQ get together. I asked him why he didn't say something to somebody. It clearly made him uncomfortable, and he brushed it aside.
This kinda thing has been going on (at probably a lesser degree than now) for a long time. The kids are more prone to talk and feel like a 'victim' and the system has little mercy on the teachers now.
American Society? (Laugh Track Deafening)
I was also in HS in the 80s... This is nothing new.
I remember a story involving jesse jackson at some country club under similar circumstances...
When somebody orders a Big Mac, push the button with the picture of the Big Mac. When they order a filet-o-fish, push the button with the picture of the filet-o-fish.
No, no, that's a double cheese burger. Um, no, not that one, that's a chicken sandwich, not a filet-o-fish. Oh, skip it. Go see Shevonne- we'll start you on mop duty and work you up. NEXT!
True story here, swear to fuck and I'll keep it short
One of my cousin's married a she-ogre*, bitch (I think) should be legitimately cast for horror movies as the beast that lives in woods. As you guessed it, my cousin is obviously made of 100% man minus that community college, face painting and balloon making were waaaaaayyyyyy too stressful for him (finally found his niche at blockbuster, for awhile).
Anyways, his wife got promoted to manager at Pizza Hut one day. Pretty shocking for a delivery person* to get that promotion right? Turns out she got a manager hat because she kept getting lost trying to deliver pizzas! In short, this country is totally fucked.
*I'm also ugly as shit and very rarely put a person down for at least trying to work, but jesus fucking christ on the cross here.
Fail Your Way to the Top is actually a viable career success strategy in these here United States nowadays...
It's very common in the world of Govt employment.
Not just .gov
My final office job was in a oil refining company that had the dumbest mexican bitch you could imagine. I one day asked the dept head (my friend) why he didn't fire her incompetent ass and his reply was the lawsuit she would file will cost more than simply moving her to an unimportant job. Helped concrete my attitude about things back when I was in my early 20's.
In .gov they would promote her to dept head. I'm not kidding. I did five years and couldn't take another day of incompetence and idiocy. At least 50% of the workforce is either lazy or incompetent or both. In private inducstry, it's closer to 20%.
Even that 20% or so figure (one I agree with) is taxing enough to make work stressful... Lazy people are the fucking worst
One's appearance doesn't have to detract from success: Washitton, D.C. is known for being the same as Hollyweird, but with ugly people...
"she kept getting lost trying to deliver pizzas!"
There is an app for that. What they need is an app to stop their cars from cornering at 40mph so all of my toppings don't pile into the corner of the box.............
Big clue...one of my first jobs...still a teen...I was working as a cashier in a store and a floor position opened up. Hated being a cashier, floor job paid better.
Was outright told I couldn't have the floor position because "you are too good of a cashier".
A massive extension of low paid service sector and non jobs as we finally embark on a dash for the exit in the new year, as it is reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel is allegedly ‘Hitler’s Daughter’ and the Fourth Reich is about to become a reality......
http://beforeitsnews.com/conspiracy-theories/2015/12/the-fix-is-in-franc...
Will you please fuck off already?
Fraudural Reserve Chairman: $100/hour : $197.900 per year during time in office.
Upon exit from post, speaking (payola) fees of $200,00 to $400,000 a pop, plus $25 MILLION DOLLAR annual salary at the Fed's trading arm, Citadel, as an "advisor". Priceless!
and who says CRIME doesn't pay!!!!?
Petroleum Transfer Engineer
Position eliminated by "self service pumps" (except in NJ & OR)
You mean jobs that require no education and almost no skill pay next to nothing? I find that hard to believe.
"You mean jobs that require no education and almost no skill pay next to nothing? I find that hard to believe."
Work for the government then. They have all that and get paid well with benefits.

LOL, just watched it again. Gotta love LEO, right?
Also for those that don't know, a gunshot in a closed room is extremely fucking loud and will keep your ears ringing for several minutes.
Gov't workers are generally highly educated. All of the low-education, low-skill gigs that used to be gov't work have now been outsourced. In many cases, to an extent that is harmful to the civil service - the skill pipeline doesn't have a pool of bright young kids to draw on anymoure.
"You mean jobs that require no education and almost no skill pay next to nothing? "
Not so sure about that, It wouldn't surprise me if restaurants require 4 year college degrees to wait & bus tables. Masters or PHd required for the cooks!
The majority of these jobs are female-centric.
I always laugh when I hear how proud the west is touting how more women are breadwinners....whah whah whah.
Sorry, I don't see any "winning" going on here at these stated wages.
If you are a woman you should consider neurosurgery or orthopedics...pay is much better than for internal medicine or pediatrics....in fact the same is true if you have a penis.
What do they pay if you're a woman with a penis?
Ask hillary or mochelle.
They are winning whenever they marry and divorce the guy, then they get cash and prices, home, alimony, and 20% of the guy salary per kid... They don't need to make that much money or work hard as long as they are able to swindle a man
Old story there...pink ghetto.
Nurses are excepted because they provide an actual need and their services can be billed at a premium.
Registered Nurses earn $70K a year? I need to have a talk with my wife tonight. She's obviously been slacking off.
Mine will make over $100K this year
Son of a BITCH! This is starting to piss me off now. Wifey knocks down about half that. Of course, she is considered "full time" working only 32 scheduled hours a week (and ends up actually working maybe 25 with all the times they flag her off from coming in).
Same with my wife. three 12's and makes maybe mid 50's.
Mine almost always is at 45-50 hours week and she makes $42.00 hour
Mine is a RN, works three 12's and does over 125k...minimum (plus full bennies). Then again she's in a specialty field when it comes to nursing. She didn't even graduate "real" college, just a 2 year nursing school (no student debt). She worked her way up the ladder the ol' fashion way.
It's no picnic though, is it? High burnout rate from what I hear. God Bless 'Em! I couldn't do what they do. Weak stomach.
No shit. Way underpaid compared to the primadonna asshole doctors. Nurses are the best.
It's a tough job no doubt and I know I couldn't do it. Mine works in cardiac surgery and has for over 30 years.
No a tough job is going out at 1:00 am cleaning up after all the pigs who go shopping in a day. 5 gallon bucket, tongs, change trash liners, acetone off some graffiti or scrap off a sticker, maybe even shovel up a dead cat and toss it in a bag, blower action one time a week in parking lot, pressure wash a sidewalk or two couple times a month, toss a homeless couple off the sidewalk or make them leave sleeping in their van. Ok I'm home by 5:00 am, read a little ZH and down some java/cigs if I didn't fix something broken. Did I say I can blast the fucking radio all I want? Sucks to be a surf for the .5% ers
1099 $120k.....Think outside the box, life is what you make it...make it off the rich.
I more year to retirement ! Yeah me
Gold Bitchez......I pick up pennies
Yeah, you better ND, my niece is 24 a pediatric RN bringing home 72K working 3 12 hour shifts a week!
END THE FED!
nurses are very much like .gov
big pay + fringes and total job security
fuck nurses---way overpaid
Healthcare jobs by decree of .gov. Take away the +1T a year in medicare and medicaid $ and let a free market decide what healthcare costs. If healthcare costs were in line with what people could afford nearly every hospital in the country would have to close their doors.
if someone's wife has that high paying job, they defend it to the end. rationalizing it all the way, but at the same time posting here on zero hedge against the system that their wife gets the family money from. healthcare costs are outrageous in the usa. open everything to the free market exvept zero hedge wives jobs. hypocites.
Get back to us when you or your kid is sick in the hospital with some life threatening illness and let us know how your 30k/yr philipino nurse does. Hope you speak tagolog! Free market , bitch!
Awe, mad your wife lives off a combination of stolen and recycled money?
Hope you never really need a nurse babe or have a loved one that needs a nurse.
My dad spent about a month suffering and ultimately dying in ICU as his pancreas was destroyed. I was there everyday. His nurses were mostly awesome (one didn't seem up to it).
There are some overpaid people out there...bankers, CEOs, professional athletes and many celebrities come to mind.
A good nurse? No.
My wife takes care of the house...and cooks as she is supposed to. Never let them out o the cage...also she is 20 years younger than me bitchez. Money does that. LOL
WTF is it now with women getting all tattooed out, looks fucking terrible (one visible I know but, who stops at one?). Ink is obviously more important than a rainy day fund.
People with all this shit all over their bodies and pierced into always reminds me of the picture of forks and one in the middle is mangled and twisted, missing some tines with the caption of ' being unique doesn't make you useful'.
Ditto. WTF is with this crap? And the skin implants with the horns, bumps, etc. The newest big deals out here down LaLaLandWay are ass implants to look like KK and vaginal plastic surgery to make it look "nice".
I'm posting drunk as normal so don't get me started on fucked up shit.
Was at the store today doing some xmas shopping with my mom. After being told what we wanted was by the trying room, aka fitting room as I eventually figured out, we found what we came for and proceeded to checkout. Decent looking girl, mid 20s (I know little chance of being normal) so I started talking and while doing so noticed she had what appeared to be dirt on her hands. Long typing short, it was a tattoo of two snakes (her arms) rising from her hands. Obviously she could only show so much in the dept. store but what the fuck are these people thinking?
As an aside, we were given a 15% discount even though we picked out the item at the listed price and ready to pay the listed price.
I can handle most anything, except the ear gauges ... I see that on a man or woman, and it instantly raises my blood pressure. I REALLY love it when I see the remaining wreckage of one that got ripped out, that makes my week.
Meh, i have gauges, i work in a combo of IT, electronics and manufacturing, so who gives a shit? I don't even have tattoos and those are my only visible piercings so yeah.
Well Knuks, labiaplasty helps some ladies no longer resemble a raw roast beef sandwich down there, and what could be wrong with that?!
Personally, I like a lady with a nice hair cut and some lippy attitude.
Edit for extra clarity:
I want a woman with a goddamn bush and fat pussy lips. Not a fucking rainforest from asshole to bellybutton however, use some reason.
Any woman who does this for the male gaze deserves the loss of feeling. What she's going for, in her fucked up quest for porn-perfection is pre-pubescence, what it is is "feminist"-sanctioned FGM.
Educate me: FGM stands for .. . ?
Female Genital Mutilation, that wonderful practice of African Muslims... coming SOON to a neighborhood NEAR YOU!
female genital mutilation?
There's a BIG difference between trimming the hedges and cutting them off at the root (FGM). Jesus.
The inner labia are the most sensitive part of female genitalia after the clitoris. There are many levels of FGM, most aren't the extreme you're thinking of, which is quite rarely documented.
In many cases, it's quite literally the same surgery as a "labiaplasty", the only difference being the woman is usually younger(but still sexually mature), and the conditions are perhaps less sanitary.
I'm getting hot when you talk about labias, L Bean. Mmmmmmm....
We're talking about a beef curtain ectomy here.
Hell; I wish I could run into one that looked like roast beef hanging out all over the place! All the ones I come across I have to ask, "Where's the Beef"? The more the merrier from where I lap....
You're an animal Mr. Lee, but I like the cut of your jib!
Don't concentrate on the finger, or you'll miss all that heavenly glory.
Ancient custom of Fed ownership marks.
AA and Bachelors degree Nurses get paid silly stupid money, the more educated make stupid money for essentially walking around and handing out pharmaceuticals the hospitals can double charge your insurance for.
The lower tier bed pan cleaners and other short trained staff get paid minimum wage.
You can also find these people at old folks homes abusing the residents and stealing their diamond and other valuables.
As a follow up to my post about my wife, above, I can validate everything you just said is the literal truth. You sound like you have some experience in this area.
My best employee just got her RN (a true success story, worked her ass off while she was working her ass off) now I have to hope I can afford to keep her.
Yeah, they need to pay those Nursing Home CNA's more so maybe they won't be so angry and doing sick shit to their helpless wards. They'd also attract a higher caliber employee. Nursing homes are FAR from cheap. It makes one wonder where all of the money goes...
https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/abusive-photos-on-social-media-pose-rising-threat-to-nursing-home-patients/2015/12/19/d71b4204-9ec8-11e5-bce4-708fe33e3288_story.html
What are skilled jobs? Besides STEM, I mean.
Prostitute, for one.
Most guys have had at least one female in their lives who'd they'd consider Highly Skilled in that area. Memories...
I always had to pay for anything good
That's because all women are whores.
Brother, we all pay for it, one way or another...
You're meeting the wrong ones then.
My last bought me a new tv (thought the old one was a bit shoddy and that I may like a new one), PS3, New computer bits and pieces and paid for a decent exhaust system for my WJ Jeep. All in one year.
She even bought her own engagement ring and said "Don't give it to me until/if you're ready.. but it's there". When we broke up she didn't even want the ring.
There are non gold diggers out there :)
If i absolutely, positively had to, as you end up paying for it one way or another, i'd prefer an unskilled / inexperienced prostitute as opposed to the well banged cynical type ( that i've only seen in the movies or heard about 2nd hand, honest ).
Im honestly glad you married the first virgin you banged, I hope it lasts till you die.
If I had it to do all over again, and I mean this in all seriousness, I'd be an underwater welder. Big bucks and if you have an accident at work you're basically guaranteed to be dead in a matter of seconds so either way you're set for life.
True story. I met a guy once who was ex-navy and had gone into underwater welding afterward. He was doing repair work on the Buford Dam on Lake Lanier north of Atlanta, GA. So, he's over 100' down there alone welding in that murky, pitch black water facing the dam, but he keeps getting that 'feeling' that he's being watched. Finally, he turns around and sees NOTHING but two huge eyes, whiskers, and a mouth big enough to swallow him whole (giant catfish). It scared him so badly, that he dropped his gear and swam straight to the surface, fuck the bends. His underwater welding career ended that day. I had zero reason to doubt the guy when he told me the story because he seemed pretty embarrassed about it.
Gruper eating 4ft shark:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O37HI_AX9nY
Nothing to be embarrassed about!
Like I've said, Webb Hubbell is not to be taken lightly.
Harry Carey had a photo of an old catfish(just caught that week) during the 7th inning repose years ago. 12" across the eyes. The old ones are huge and have seriously bad attitudes.
FORWARD SOVIET ICTHYOLOGISTS!
I'm going to burst your bubble here, so to speak.
Navy Divers are not Commercial Divers. Sure they can dive and have all sorts of training, are very proficient at what they do, but they are not Commercial Divers. If I were in trouble, I would want a Navy Diver there as they're very good at that sort of stuff, but otherwise, in the real world without somebody telling them exactly what to do they're sort of worthless thinking on their feet. Just the way it is.
Now, I know a whole bunch of inland Divers and they love to tell the whole "I was diving on a dam and ran across a giant catfish" story. Just ain't true. Sure there is giant catfish down there but none big enough to eat you. Plus when you are actually wearing all of your gear there is no possible way to swim to the surface. Climb the down line.
Here's a true story for you. I was working a large (30" over a 40") pipeline crossing in the waters off of Trinidad-Tobago at -500'. Visibility was roughly 10'. Doing my thing when I feel something nudge up against me. I looked over and stared into an eye about the size of a dinner plate. I hollered, but as I was breathing mostly He, it was sort of high-pitched. Topside asked why I was screaming like a little girl. Damn thing was a giant Jew Fish. Roughly the size of a VW van. Turns out it lived where we were working and the last team had been feeding the damn thing their lunches. Well, it would come around, nudge you, then you would have to scratch it for a bit to satisfy it's urges before it would go away. An hour or two it would show up again for the same show. Went on for a month.
Understand, you do not climb to the surface, bends be damned, no matter what. Neither do you take your hat off. I once ran a decompression chamber for a buddy of mine for 12 hrs watching him die. And, die he did. Not pretty at all. There are all sorts of ways to die offshore Commercial Diving. Hell, I knew a guy who died because a manta ray caught his umbilical at -200' and brought him to the surface. Embolised him.
Aye, we should not be in deep water, it's not our place. My parents love diving, I have seen photos of my mum with Bass swimming right next to her, and they made her look small ! I never go into the ocean anymore or any deep water.
The stories I have heard as well.
I repeated a big catfish story to a former professional diver once a long time ago. He knew the location at a dam and verified the enormity of the catfish in that water. There were photos. He said that he never really saw much of them but knew they were there because he could feel them bump up against him while he was working.
(Shudder.)
I was a commercial diver for a decade.
Guess what?
Laid off.
Same with buddies that have been working for 32yrs.
Good while it lasted.
100-150k for 4-5 months work, once you got to my level.
Nice, and I applaud your balls of steel.
The insurance companies have come down hard on underwater welding that is at any dept that really pays.. 6 years and you are out. .. so what does that say about the quality of life after being that type of welder.. your bones break down due to all the damage done by the trapped air (nitrogen). This damag never reverses, just get progressively worse. I guess that is ok for someone that is glued to the boob tube and has a pecker that two fingers can't grasp
That sort of thing happend to the early experimental Divers, trying to figure out the correct gas mixture to breathe at depth. I feel bad for them, but now a days that is not an issue.
Fact of the matter is, is that Commercial Diving is a young man's gig, and even then most don't get to or have the perseverance to do it.
Here's my own personal experience:
I started dive school with 33 or so others, by the time graduation rolled around there were 12 of us. After that I became a tender, which is a Diver apprentice. Tending is the most thankless, miserable, dirty, nasty work I've ever done. At the time I did it one was expected to tend for 3 years, I believe now it's about 5-7years, I sure as shit wouldn't do it now. By the end of those three years there were 3 of us still working and we all became Divers. I ended up being a Saturation Diver (google it), the other two didn't and both were done within 4 years.
It's a hell of an attrition rate. It's not scuba diving.
There's always that to look forward to.
"What are skilled jobs? Besides STEM, I mean."
Around these parts CNC programmers still make a good buck. Pretty low stress job. I'm seeing more and more (but not like it used to be) micro- machine shops coming back into the fold. 2-3 man shops.
3D printers in a pole barn. Fuck a factory. Distributed democracy. When is the Daemon going to strike?
Not sure how well machining will do with the ongoing collapse in Oil. Machining parts for the Oil industry was a big part of demand.
Whada ya mean!? I mean we can use the unemployed to suck up the oil with a drinking straw. Also, improving tha sucking skills (which can be used for other things). No Chinese can compete with that... How da ya mean chinese people are more skilled?!
LoL.. not in Rockford.. anyway that is to small to justify tjr front office that the big companies require and the quality control (remember the F-135 compressor blades.. that was quality control of the start product).
I always considered CNC machine operators to be STEM. Not degreed, but then neither are other tech positions. They still require technical education.
Require foreign language ability (export/import, translation, etc.)? Require significant knowledge of subject area (think.. forestry, journalism, etc.)? The Professions - doctor, lawyer?
....just curious for anyone who can answer this. Those computer related STEM jobs, how many of those are going to H1-B visa holders?
All of them
All of them
All of them.
All of them.
Best other Barry voice,
All of them. All of them. All of them.
Peak finance and no debt are right... See any hi tech company in San Jose or Dallas over the last 10 years and pretty much all the new hires, anyone that is on their 20s or 30s are Chindian.
I got interviewed for a job a week ago, everyone, from Hr, to hiring manager to solution architect were indian, and within 5 minutes I knew they were interviewing me just to fill their quotas of non
indian interviews with 0 chance of being selected.
All of them.
Only about 35% go to H1Bs....the other 65% go right to india.
No need to pay u.s. based middle man.
No, not really ALL of them. I am in STEM (Senior Software Engineer / Cyber Security Specialist) in a large city in the Midwest. We see some, but to be honest, MOST of the STEM guys I have worked with have been white, middle-aged guys. Then again, this IS the Midwest. It might be different on the coasts.
Location, location, location.
Ha...see me with STEM job spouse now living in MI.
Bright futures lie ahead for you all.
Sincerely,
The MoneyChangers
Not only will McJobs be replaced with automation, soon, but plenty of cashier jobs will be, too.
Forward, Soviet!
"Not only will McJobs be replaced with automation, soon, but plenty of cashier jobs will be, too."
Well self-checkout (hardware/supermarekts) isn't really automation, its getting the customers to do the work! Next retailers will start making customers stock shelves /sarc (but perhaps not)
We should replace Obama with automation, it saves a Christmas holiday golving in tax money.
LOVE the self-checkout at WalFart.
It's mistake-prone, and the best discount <wink wink> in the game today.
You want ME to check myself out? OK...fine. I will.
LOVE it.
Was at Lowes yesterday. Everyone was using those stupid self checkouts while two open registers with cashiers was empty. Amazing how Americans have no problems putting people out of work. Just like in the 1980's when they started buying all that chinese junk.
It was between comical and sick. We stayed a little while after checking out and watched those idiots fight the machines. The cashiers was watching with us taking a break. Not one standing in line stepped over to the empty cashier lines.
Nauseating...
Where in the world do you live? I have never seen anyone line up to use the self check-out. In fact, if there are no other registers open, I go directly to the self check-out attendant and ask him/her to check me out. And, if he/she refuses, I just walk and leave the cart.
Life it too short to fight with self check-out.
I try not to use the self-checkout because I want the cashiers to keep their jobs. Besides that, I cannot tolerate the loud, incessant "voices" coming out of those machines.
The numbers of waiters and waitresses are incorrect because tips are not included xD.
No tips, just shafts.
Just the tip.
I promise.
Tips generally average 15-25% of daily wages. It's even worse now that most establishments "share" tips. For sure they're not making the salaries some speculate they are.
But if automation makes all these jobs unnecessary what then is the point of going to college?
Didn't you read the fine print? TEMS. Medical. Professional. Don't go to college unless they teach you something worth learning.
Hey everybody count your blessings, you could be a prostitute in Greece knocking down 5 Euro an hour.
the most LUCRATIVE JOB is a token on the public/government dole. especially if you are fat, dumb, female, and have knappy hair, no? correct me if i'm wrong.
and working as the head of some useless dept at 175k/year
Or looking into a crystal ball at America's future.
Miserly = Jewy
The value of alienated labor power as an investment asset class has been decimated by economic, financial and fiscal policies of the US regime and its imperial vassals. The system is strongly promoting rentier class, parasites who live directly of hard working people (capitalists) or from income producing properties i.e. landlords or courtiers of power elite and their cronies as well as favor financial derivatives collateralized by blood sweat and tears of working people or class privilege.
The actions in the economic realm (unimpeded globalization of speculative capital flows w/ near zero cost), in financial realm (massive debt financing dependency) and in fiscal realm (scandal of taxing labor) are all aimed in the destruction of the values of labor power and pauperization of the populace while collapsing societies into neo-feudal serfdom.
The miserable a level of workers pay and abhorrently high completely unjustified level of theft called compensation of the oligarchic executives in the US and elsewhere is a direct result of all those policies and as well as their brutal implementation by the security state, paper over by propaganda of efficiency.
More on this calcified, crony, labor exploitative system based on the propaganda of self-efficiency, sanctified individual greed and shameful lust for money and influence, characteristics of biblical demons, can be found here:

Please explain the part about landlords being parasites. Would you prefer Soviet style government housing? Before you respond take a drive through a government housing project.
How do you want to house people who can't buy a home?
Housing never became available for a whole generation because the market was rigged for the banks. These are macroeconomic issues. You are not being blamed for renting your condo at market.
Didn't understand your post until I realized that today is opposite day.
Never before in human history have people been able to purchase a home with no money at 3%. It could not possibly be easier. It has been made so easy that people with no business buying a home can do it.
Lots of people are using their $80k Art History degree to serve coffee. They cannot buy a house. This is the result of poor decision making.
I buy houses at the rate most people buy new shoes. I was also born into poverty and don't feel obligated to apologize for it.
I'm in no way a fan of our banking/monetary system. But I don't say inaccurate stuff because I'm frustrated with the banking system.
You don't live in a city where the average home price is 500k
At least Nurses pay tax, how much Tax do Waiters and Waitresses pay from Tips?.
Ever noticed how many places have all those computers, and they give you a hand written bill ? Tax Fraud, the Accountant and Government see the Computer generated Bill and you get the hand drawn bill. So what's the difference, shhh don't tell anyone.
"Nurses make $69,790 annually while the average U.S. worker makes $47,230"
THAT IS A LOT OF MONEY
go ask indians or chinese. It is huge amounts of money so americans should not complain
in india $250 per month is a norm
WALLFART NATION, but seriously folks would you give these clowns real money?

Nurses make $69,790 annually"
Uhhh maybe before taxes, working ass off taking all shifts and BS
from overlords.
Probably closer to 50K.
Massive flows of immigration into a weak economy will keep labor prices TOO LOW for TOO MANY.
Moratoreum on immigration, legal and illegal...and hunt down the over stayed visas and expel them.
It is a supply and demand 101 problem.....curtail the supply of cheap labor.
The lack of knowledge about non compition for labor in the US is astounding. Workers have been overun with Political ideology they do not know how to hold their politicians accountable for legal legal and competitive labor laws.
This has been going on since at least the early 1990's and it will not change soon. Non Union Corporations have won the battle for LITTLE OR NO LABOR COMPITITION.
