US "Ally" Saudi Arabia's Phony War On Terror

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Brahma Chellaney, originally posted at Project Syndicate,

Containing the scourge of Islamist terror will be impossible without containing the ideology that drives it: Wahhabism, a messianic, jihad-extolling form of Sunni fundamentalism whose international expansion has been bankrolled by oil-rich sheikhdoms, especially Saudi Arabia. That is why the newly announced Saudi-led anti-terror coalition, the Islamic Military Alliance to Fight Terrorism, should be viewed with profound skepticism.

Wahhabism promotes, among other things, the subjugation of women and the death of “infidels.” It is – to quote US President Barack Obama’s description of what motivated a married couple of Pakistani origin to carry out the recent mass shooting in San Bernardino, California – a “perverted interpretation of Islam,” and the ideological mother of jihadist terrorism. Its offspring include Al Qaeda, the Taliban, Boko Haram, al-Shabaab, and the Islamic State, all of which blend hostility toward non-Sunnis and anti-modern romanticism into nihilistic rage.

Saudi Arabia has been bankrolling Islamist terrorism since the oil-price boom of the 1970s dramatically boosted the country’s wealth. According to a 2013 European Parliament report, some of the $10 billion invested by Saudi Arabia for “its Wahhabi agenda” in South and Southeast Asia was “diverted” to terrorist groups, including Lashkar-e-Taiba, which carried out the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

Western leaders have recognized the Saudi role for many years. In a 2009 diplomatic cable, then-US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton identified Saudi Arabia as “the most significant source of funding to Sunni terrorist groups worldwide.” Thanks largely to the West’s interest in Saudi oil, however, the Kingdom has faced no international sanctions.

Now, with the growth of terrorist movements like the Islamic State, priorities are changing. As German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said in a recent interview, “We must make it clear to the Saudis that the time of looking the other way is over.”

This shift has spurred the Kingdom to announce a “crackdown” on individuals and groups that fund terror. But, according to a recent US State Department report, some Saudi-based charities and individual donors continue to fund Sunni militants.

From this perspective, Saudi Arabia’s surprise announcement of a 34-country anti-terror alliance, with a joint operations center based in Riyadh, is a logical step, aimed at blunting growing Western criticism, while boosting Sunni influence in the Middle East. But, of course, the alliance is a sham – as a closer look at its membership makes clear.

Tellingly, the alliance includes all of the world’s main sponsors of extremist and terrorist groups, from Qatar to Pakistan. It is as if a drug cartel claimed to be spearheading a counternarcotics campaign. Listed as members of the alliance are also all of the jihadist citadels other than Afghanistan, including war-torn Libya and Yemen, both of which are not currently governed by a single authority.

Moreover, despite being touted as an “Islamic” alliance, with members coming from “all over the Islamic world,” the group includes predominantly Christian Uganda and Gabon, but not Oman (a fellow Gulf sheikdom), Algeria (Africa’s largest country), and Indonesia (the world’s most populous Muslim country).

The failure to include Indonesia, which has almost twice as many Muslims as the entire Middle East, is striking not only because of its size: Whereas most countries in the alliance are ruled by despots or autocrats, Indonesia is a robust democracy. Autocratic rule in Islamic countries tends to strengthen jihadist forces. But when democracy takes root, as in tolerant and secular Indonesia, the clash between moderates and extremists can be better managed.

Saudi Arabia’s dysfunctional approach is reflected in the fact that some alliance members – including Pakistan, Malaysia, Lebanon, and the Palestinian Authority – immediately declared that they had never actually joined. The Kingdom seemed to think that it could make that decision on behalf of the major recipients of its aid.

Add to that the unsurprising exclusion of Shia-governed Iran and Iraq, along with Alawite-ruled Syria, and it is clear that Saudi Arabia has merely crafted another predominantly Sunni grouping to advance its sectarian and strategic objectives. This aligns with the more hardline policy approach that has taken root since King Salman ascended the throne in January 2015.

At home, Salman’s reign so far has meant a marked increase in the number of sentences of death by decapitation, often carried out in public – a method emulated by the Islamic State. Abroad, it has meant a clear preference for violent solutions in Bahrain, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.

A smaller Saudi-led Arab coalition has been bombing Yemen since March, with the goal of pushing back the Shia Houthi rebels who captured Sana’a, the capital, after driving the Saudi-backed government from power. Saudi warplanes have bombed homes, markets, hospitals, and refugee camps in Yemen, leading critics to accuse the Kingdom of deliberately terrorizing civilians to turn public opinion against the Houthis.

Saudi Arabia’s solutions have often controverted the objectives of its American allies. For example, the Kingdom and its Arab partners have quietly slipped out of the US-led air war in Syria, leaving the campaign largely in American hands.

But beyond Saudi Arabia’s strategic manipulations lies the fundamental problem with which we started: the Kingdom’s official ideology forms the heart of the terrorist creed. A devoted foe of Islamist terrorism does not promote violent jihadism. Nor does it arrest and charge with “terrorism” domestic critics of its medieval interpretation of Islam. Saudi Arabia does both.

This speaks to the main shortcoming of today’s militarized approach to fighting terrorism. Unless the expansion of dangerous ideologies like Wahhabism is stopped, the global war on terror, now almost a generation old, will never be won. No matter how many bombs the US and its allies drop, the Saudi-financed madrassas will continue to indoctrinate tomorrow’s jihadists.

Yup!

Similar to WW2, how America allied herself with people like Stalin, instead of fighting alongside the only military that was dedicated to stopping the spread of Communism at the time.

Of course, the only thing anyone hears about WW2, is "Hitler killed Jews"...but let's not ask too many questions:

1. Which ethnic/religious group comprised the majority in the NKVD?

2. Which ethnic/religious group were Communism's biggest proponents?

3. What do: Trotsky, Grigori Voitinsky, Theo Adorno, Ilya Ehrenburg, all have in common?

Oh, I see I've received a few down votes...keep voting, you vampire cocksuckers.

My grandfather was a Hungarian in the Arrow Cross - He was a good man, kindhearted. He never had a bad word to say about anyone, except the Jews.

What he said:

When he was in the Arrow Cross, his unit received word that there were Jews hoarding supplies in a neighborhood in the town he was sent to. The unit went there, and proceeded to do "sweep and clear" tactics. They went to the house of a Jewish family...and rather than give up the supplies, the Jewish father held his own baby up in front of him like a human shield.

Like a coward.

So downvote all you want. You'll still be cowardly fucks.

Did anyone believe that the Saudi "Royals", the main supporters of Sunni Wahhabism would be fighting a real war against their obvious allies?

Maybe it has to do with the "ethnicity or religious beliefs of the Saudi Royals"?

Dunno...

But it remains a historical fact that:

Wherever the Jew goes, eventually he pisses people off to the point that people want to kill him.

Normally, when someone isn't welcome, all it takes is asking that person to leave.

But not the Jew.

The Jew breeds resentment on the level where wholesale murder is acceptable.

Why?

Must read article that just published by Seymour Hersh:

From the Seymour Hersh article:

Few in the US Congress share this view. One exception is Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat from Hawaii and member of the House Armed Services Committee who, as a major in the Army National Guard, served two tours in the Middle East. In an interview on CNN in October she said: ‘The US and the CIA should stop this illegal and counterproductive war to overthrow the Syrian government of Assad and should stay focused on fighting against … the Islamic extremist groups.’

‘Does it not concern you,’ the interviewer asked, ‘that Assad’s regime has been brutal, killing at least 200,000 and maybe 300,000 of his own people?’

‘The things that are being said about Assad right now,’ Gabbard responded, ‘are the same that were said about Gaddafi, they are the same things that were said about Saddam Hussein by those who were advocating for the US to … overthrow those regimes … If it happens here in Syria … we will end up in a situation with far greater suffering, with far greater persecution of religious minorities and Christians in Syria, and our enemy will be far stronger.’

Down arrows for insecure children who worry about down arrows. What I really think is creepy is an article that wants to 'protect' us by stopping other people from believing whatever the F their addled brains want to believe. Wahhabism would fade into the nothingness it deserves if it wasn't protected by state sponsorship. Keep ALL forms of .GOV from trying to tell us what to believe and we might have a chance to come to sanity but what I DON'T want is for someone to tell me that a bunch of loons who have spent too much time in the desert sun can't believe whatever they want. Without the support of states the Wahhabis, Zionists, Communists and all the other whacko belief systems would fade away.

I'm not convinced the "isis" rank and file are quite the takfiri wahhabist they've been made out to be by a wholly unreliable, propaganda dispensing media.

Surely such people exist, but many credible reports of "isis" fighters running away suggests, at a minimum, less than perfect zeal.

There are likely western mercenaries in addition to us/uk/saudi/turkish/israeli special operators - who knows if they are all in fact coordinating.

It is also curious that isis remains completely silent regarding the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the drip drip drip of Sunni Muslim blood in Al Quds.  Even if one argues they are fearful of attacking Israel directly {but not Russia and Iraq and Syria and purportedly France and plan to target the US... why wouldn't they mention what is in fact a brutal oppression if only to gain points with the 'Arab street'?

In fact, it doesn't make any sense at all.

Even bin Laden and Khalid Sheik Mohammed specifically mentioned Israel/Palestine.  You might chalk that up to rhetorical point scoring more than genuine concern, {or that they were really quasi-patsies in a us/israeli false flag op} and I wouldn't argue, but they did say it, and the us media and 9/11 commission buried it.

Of course, we live in a world where people actually believe that in all the world only the Jewish daughter of an executed Mossad spy was able to "find" isis videos.  And where the NSA can't find and take down "isis" websites.

the old bolsheviks were as jewish as the neoconservative movement.

in both cases, you are forbidden from saying so, not because it is false, but because it is true.

Jews as violent oppressor and murderer conflicts with the "eternal and sacred {chosen} victim" motiff the zionists, especially, have crafted.

But they went after Russian Christians *because* of their race hatred.  And they had significant help from western bankers, largely Jewish ones.

Stalin, who married Jews and surrounded himself with them [indeed he may have been a crypto Jew himself] was actually painted as an "anti-semite" for murdering so many Jewish politicians...

But he was killing his rivals.  The reason why so many Jews died was because so many anti-Russian Jews, less than 7% of the country, were at the top of party leadership.

While bona fide anti-semites might overstate it, it is hard to overstate.  Just as neoconservatism was in its inception and essence Jewish

So were the Old Bolsheviks.  Jewish leadership in attempted revolutions and assasinations in Germany, Russia, Poland, Hungary, and elsewhere also paints a similar picture.

Deep in Jewish group concept, as in the Torah and Talmud, are racial supremacism and megalomania.  This doesn't mean that your dentist is in on a grand conspiracy, just that fundamentalist and nationalist Jews are inevitably hyperethnocentric, xenophobic and hypocritical.  They also demand that a whole lot of historical fact be buried, and Jewish-and/or-Zionist myths cherished as axiomatic truths which are doubted on pain of imprisonment.

And what is ever the reply?

"you're just an anti-semite".

Let's break that down - there is no refutation on the merits, no summoning of facts in opposition, the accusation is simply made that one 'hates' Jews.

But, in the popular sense, this merely "begs the question"

WHY - over thousands of years and dozens of countries and cultures, were Jews "persecuted" - generally after some allegations of abuse of 'the people'.  Why were similar complaints made of Jewish ethics from ancient Rome to medieval Poland?

Again the refrain "anti-semitism" -the proper term would have been Judeophobia.  The word used is a magickal one....but no matter.  Why would a culture whose response to criticism is ALWAYS "you just hate us" ever even be capable of the introspection and self-analysis required to even attempt an objective analysis.

Jews kicked out of Spain - "antisemitism" for which there was no reason.  Zionist terror and ethnic cleansing of Muslims - it didn't happen, and if it did, it was only because [insert zionist lie here].

The Causes of Hostility Toward Jews: A Historical Overview [419 kilobytes] [about 102 paper pages] The religious origins of Jewish identity; the Torah (Old Testament); the Chosen People concept; the Code of Jewish Law; Jewish self-conception as a "nation apart"; brief overview of Israelite Old Testament violence; the Talmud; Jewish apostates and medieval Christian investigation of the Talmud; traditional Jewish racism, elitism, ethnocentrism, tribalism, and exclusionism; modern Jewish apologetics for traditional beliefs; the importance of Maimonides; the Jacob-Esau tradition; Reform Judaism and the modern euphemism of Jewish "particularism" (versus pan-human universalism); traditional Jewish messianic chauvinism in left-wing secular political movements; and more.

The truth of the matter is the gatekeepers do a dis-service.  It would be better to admit wrongs and crimes when the facts demand, and limit objections to falsehoods and mindless group hate.  But, it seems, they prefer to remain above criticism, and to deem their violence sacred, and any defense to that violence profane.

What will surprise those who may already be surprised about the Dönmeh connection to Turkey, is the Dönmeh connection to the House of Saud in Saudi Arabia.

An Iraqi Mukhabarat (General Military Intelligence Directorate) Top Secret report, “The Emergence of Wahhabism and its Historical Roots,” dated September 2002 and released on March 13, 2008, by the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency in translated English form, points to the Dönmeh roots of the founder of the Saudi Wahhabi sect of Islam, Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab. Much of the information is gleaned from the memoirs of a “Mr. Humfer,” (as spelled in the DIA report, “Mr. Hempher” as spelled the historical record) a British spy who used the name “Mohammad,” claimed to be an Azeri who spoke Turkish, Persian, and Arabic and who made contact with Wahhab in the mid-18th century with a view of creating a sect of Islam that would eventually bring about an Arab revolt against the Ottomans and pave the way for the introduction of a Jewish state in Palestine. Humfer’s memoirs are recounted by the Ottoman writer and admiral Ayyub Sabri Pasha in his 1888 work, “The Beginning and Spreading of Wahhabism.”

In his book, The Dönmeh Jews, D. Mustafa Turan writes that Wahhab’s grandfather, Tjen Sulayman, was actually Tjen Shulman, a member of the Jewish community of Basra, Iraq. The Iraqi intelligence report also states that in his book, The Dönmeh Jews and the Origin of the Saudi Wahhabis, Rifat Salim Kabar reveals that Shulman eventually settled in the Hejaz, in the village of al-Ayniyah what is now Saudi Arabia, where his grandson founded the Wahhabi sect of Islam. The Iraqi intelligence report states that Shulman had been banished from Damascus, Cairo, and Mecca for his “quackery.” In the village, Shulman sired Abdul Wahhab. Abdel Wahhab’s son, Muhammad, founded modern Wahhabism.

Right. But no less phony than that of the Zionist-dominated US Deep State.

"You see, the US strategic goal in Syria is not as your faithful mainstream media servants (led by that redoubtable channeler of Neo-Con smokescreens at the NYT Michael Gordon) might have you believe to save the Syrian people from the ravages of the long-standing Assad dictatorship, but rather to heighten the level of internecine conflict in that country to the point where it will not be able to serve as a bulwark against Israeli regional hegemony for at least another generation. How do we know? Because important protagonists in the Israelo-American policy planning elite have advertised the fact with a surprising degree of clarity in documents and public statements issued over the last several decades. The key here is learning to listen to what our cultural training has not prepared us to hear. In 1982, as the Likud Party (which is to say, the institutional incarnation of the Revisionist Zionist belief, first articulated by Jabotinsky in the ”Iron Wall” that the only way to deal with “the Arabs” in and around Israel was through unrelenting force and the inducement of cultural fragmentation) was consolidating its hold on the foreign policy establishment of Israel, a journalist named Oded Yinon, who had formerly worked at the Israeli Foreign Ministry, published an article in which he outlined the strategic approach his country needed to take in the coming years. What follows are some excerpts from Israel Shahak’s English translation of that text: ..."

Saudi Arabia is a puppet doing the Anglo-Zionist Empire's dirty work.  They helped provide the terror proxies the US and Israeli policy makers are using to destroy Syraq, villify Islam, etc. etc.

The Saudi royals persist at the pleasure of the Anglo-Zionist Empire.  Nothing they do is without US approval.

Meanwhile the US Deep State and  Likud Israel continue to paint themselves as tireless warriors for peace.

Indonesia is indeed "The Dog That Didn't Bark In The Night," disproving the entire bullshit thesis.

Islam has nothing to do with any of this.  Islam is the same idiotic monotheistic middle-eastern sun-god/sky-wizard bullshit, adjusted for local and regional preferences, as all the others, be they Judaism, Orthodoxy, Catholocism, Protestantism, Islam, Mormonism, whatever.  Islam is not the common denominator of the war that is going on.

The common denominator is control over Eurasia, and thereby the world.  Any and every lever of power is in play.  Energy sources and routes to market are a huge part of it.  The fragmentation of social structures for the mere sake of it, to facilitate divide-and-conquer imperial strategies is another huge part of it.  Religious, ethnic, cultural differences etc. are all utilized to separate, isolate and divide people, and set them at each others' throats to facilitate either control  of Eurasia, or resistance to such control.

People who fall for the narrative tell you a lot about themselves by which parts of the ruse resonates with them.

Islam and Sunni/Shia divide, countless levels of ethnic conflicts, temporary states as Saudi, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain - all former Ottoman vassals, subsequent British Empire protectorates. All of that are individual albeit interconnected components in a multilayered conflict spanning longer than a century. Middle East post-Ottoman rule is enginereed the way it is today. The stakes are very high in this game and we are not the players, likely the choice is either spectator or a pawn.

"the global war on terror, now almost a generation old, will never be won."  what makes anybody think there is going to be a winner here. This isnt about winning or losing, it's about keeping it going for profits. No contry involved has ANY intention of this ending until every last penny can be sucked out of it.

It's about money, nothing else.

I thought Bollyn was enlightening, had not understood how deeply Zionism as an ideology united blatant criminals and people who created modern terrorism world-wide.

Naive me.  This guy's work fits with what I knew, but it is one thing to know that Sharon allowed those massacres and another to see his place in the social structure.  And to know about how the 1st 3 PMs of Israel had run terrorist groups, ditto the social structure.  And I knew about the split JPost vs Haaretz, didn't know it was criminals vs other varieties of political opinions.

There was an Israeli historian who had a book out about the founding of Israel maybe 10 years ago, book was very frank about all that, pretty much bragging.

We have allies there also, in correcting this political problem.

Zionism is racism, and worse, it is racial supremacism and sacrosanct lies and deception against the goyim.

Period.  End of story.  It is only the mythos of the 'Jew' as eternal, sacred chosen victim of hate that prevents people from seeing what is obvious.  Well, that and a virtual strangehold by Zionists on media and academia.  Americans do not know what they do not know.

Bollyn does some excellent work.

The Aussies are starting to worry and with good reason.

The islamic stench of Wahhabism and all its works is starting to move into Indonesia the most populous islamic nation on earth.

Aussies are a bit thin on the ground.

I feel the war against islam has just begun and will, as President Putin has said, take more extreme weaponry than so far used.

Islam will give no quarter to any non believer - we will have to take the same line by looks of things - or die.

" It is – to quote US President Barack Obama’s description of what motivated a married couple of Pakistani origin to carry out the recent mass shooting in San Bernardino, California – a “perverted interpretation of Islam,” "

Just how is it perverted?  Mohammed spread Islam by force. "Convert or die" isn't a new catch phrase.

And "Moses" and "Joshua" weren't thieves and murderers - is that right?

time for you to revist your Torah, Moishe.

What the Quran-bashers don’t want you to know is that the Bible is far more violent than the Quran.  In fact, the Bible–unlike the Quran–glorifies genocide; we’ve documented some of these genocide-glorifying passages in our earlier articles: see part 1part 2, and part 3.

The anti-Muslim bigots–such as the extremist Jewish Zionist Pamela Geller and the fervent, zealous Catholic polemicist Robert Spencerespecially don’t want you to know about the Biblical passages regarding King Saul.  The reason they don’t want you to read these passages is that it would make the Islamic literature look quite tame by comparison, and well, that wouldn’t be too good for the anti-Muslim business, now would it?

It is of course getting tedious, redundant, and a bit boring to document all the God-sanctioned genocides of the Bible; there are too many of them, so they seem to mesh together.  Having said that, Saul’s genocide of the Amalekites warrants special attention, so it would behoove our readers to suffer through one last article on this topic.   It should be noted, however, that our collection of violent Biblical verses is non-exhaustive, limited only by our own boredom.

According to this post by "Muslim Dude", Indonesia was included in the Saudi alliance, but was told by the Indos to get lost:

http://syrianperspective.com/2015/12/assads-visit-to-christian-church-ro...

"General observation to all - the Saudis are incompetent clowns as opposed to the more civilized and intelligent Iranians, maybe racial stereotypes but I have to be honest its true. Saudis are products of the arid deserts whereas Iranians are inheritors of an ancient civilization which predated Alexander. The Saudis have once again exhibited their childish gypsy-like mentality by creating a “coalition” out of thin air, publicly mentioning states that weren’t even told about a coalition they are supposedly part of.

Later Indonesia told Saudi to f*** off and openly said it was not part of this ridiculous circus.

Why are the Saudis carrying out foolish antics like this?"

The bloody conflict in Yemen has been raging for months – but largely ignored by the rest of the world. Devastating air strikes, led by Saudi Arabia, have killed thousands of Yemeni civilians and destroyed homes, schools and hospitals. Meanwhile, the UK government has been providing weapons to those committing these horrific war crimes.

Demand the UK stops selling arms that risk being used in human rights abuses to Saudi Arabia and the other countries bombing Yemen – we must not be complicit in killing civilians.

Saudia Arabia supports the ideology, teh United States makes use of that Ideology and Israel benefits from that Ideology, You have to take all three out. If you manage to destroy Wahhabiism (Saudi Arabia) you would still have to contend against those that need such tools (The United States), Since it is in their interests to support or create new ideologies that create terrorists, and also Israel who benefits from all of this. Or at least you have to eliminate or change those interests.

America's attachment to Saudi Arabia goes deeper than any of us know. I know the history of the alliance going back to late World War II, and the later deals we signed. But these do not explain how the USA helped Saudis evacuate America after 9/11. Nor does it explain the US blind eye towards ISIS being a complete Saudi creation, and us reluctance to lay a glove on ISIS. Today ISIS expanded into Libya in a big way, untouched by NATO. In Iraq, ISIS moved right under the eye of US warplanes to take 1/4 of all of Iraq. Something we don't know drives the US support for Saudi and for ISIS? Anyone know the "rest of the story"? Oil and Israel explain a lot, but nowhere near all.
