The Big Short: "Every American Should See This Movie & Be F##king Pissed Off"

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Jim Quinn via The Burning Platform,

“The truth is like poetry, and most people fucking hate poetry.”

The Big Short opens nationwide today. But it happened to have one showing last night at a theater near me. My youngest son and I hopped in the car and went to see it. I loved the book by Michael Lewis. The cast assembled for the movie was top notch, but having the director of Anchorman and Talledaga Nights handle a subject matter like high finance seemed odd.

The choice of Adam McKay as director turned out to be brilliant. The question was how do you make a movie about the housing market, mortgage backed securities, collateralized debt obligations, collateralized debt swaps, and synthetic CDOs interesting for the average person. He succeeded beyond all expectations.

Interweaving pop culture icons, music, symbols of materialism, and unforgettable characters, McKay has created a masterpiece about the greed, stupidity, hubris, and arrogance of Wall Street bankers gone wild. He captures the idiocy and complete capture of the rating agencies (S&P, Moodys). He reveals the ineptitude and dysfunction of the SEC, where the goal of these regulators was to get a high paying job with banks they were supposed to regulate. He skewers the faux financial journalists at the Wall Street Journal who didn’t want to rock the boat with the truth about the greatest fraud ever committed.

What makes the movie great are the characters, their motivations, their frustrations, their anger at a warped demented system, and ultimately their hollow victory when the entire edifice of fraud came crashing down on the heads of honest hard working Americans. The movie does not glorify the men that ended up making billions from the demise of the housing bubble. But it clearly defines the real bad guys.

Steve Carell plays Mark Baum (based on the real life character Steve Eisman). He’s the kind of prick who would fit in perfectly on TBP. He is abrasively hysterical with his foul mouthed commentary and insults to authority. He is the heart and soul of the movie. You feel his pain throughout. Carrell should win an Academy Award for his performance.

Christian Bale’s quirky performance as one eyed Dr. Michael Burry, whose Asberger’s Syndrome actually allowed him to focus on the minutia and discover the fraud before everyone else, is top notch. Ryan Goseling is hysterical in his role as the narrator of the story. Brad Pitt plays a supporting role, but does it with his usual class.

Ultimately, it is a highly entertaining movie with the right moral overtone, despite non-stop profanity that captures the true nature of Wall Street traders. This is a dangerous movie for Wall Street, the government, and the establishment in general. They count on the complexity of Wall Street to confuse the average person and make their eyes glaze over. That makes it easier for them to keep committing fraud and harvesting the nation’s wealth.

This movie cuts through the crap and reveals those in power to be corrupt, greedy weasels who aren’t really as smart as they want you to think they are. The finale of the movie is sobering and infuriating. After unequivocally proving that Wall Street bankers, aided and abetted by the Federal Reserve, Congress, the SEC, and the mainstream media, destroyed the global financial system, put tens of millions out of work, got six million people tossed from their homes, and created the worst crisis since the Great Depression, the filmmakers are left to provide the depressing conclusion.

No bankers went to jail. The Too Big To Fail banks were not broken up – they were bailed out by the American taxpayers. They actually got bigger. Their profits have reached new heights, while the average family has seen their income fall. Wall Street is paying out record bonuses, while 46 million people are on food stamps. Wall Street and their lackeys at the Federal Reserve call the shots in this country. They don’t give a fuck about you. And they’re doing it again.

Every American should see this movie and get fucking pissed off. The theater was deathly silent at the end of the movie. The audience was stunned by the fact that the criminals on Wall Street got away with the crime of the century, and they’re still on the loose. I had a great discussion with my 16 year old son on the way home. At least there is one millennial who understand how bad his generation is getting screwed.

Merry Fucking Christmas America from a Wall Street banker

But what if the plan is to end the FED? This movie paints the lower-level bankers as the scapegoats, who would be vilified while the real bastards who caused the whole damn thing get off scot-free.

Anyone who thinks they can stop the fed will be Kennedy'd.  I honestly don't see the FED going away anytime soon.  Look at all the presidential candidates blaming everyone/everything except the the source of the problem - the UN-Federal Reserve and their secret shareholders.

That was a great movie revue and I don't think I have ever read one like it.  It was delightfully to the point, without sugar coating and it used colorful language to describe exactly what you would want to know about the movie.  I will definitely watch it.  Merry Fucking Christmas to you too.

It's not just the Tylers but everyone that runs a site like this risks having their door kicked in at 4 a.m. by some alphabet soup SWAT (or is that TWAT) team guys the minute they post something advocating a more "active" form of retribution for the criminals on Whale Street and in CONgress.  I don't blame them for drawing a line on what articles they'll post or what content they'll allow . . . .

Try doing what you appear to be suggesting and see what happens next.  Make sure you have your personal shit in order before you do something like you're suggesting though.

All are required in todays movies. . . .

I'll tell you what is required in today's big budget movies . . . having a leading actor that is either Jewish or has Zionist views and making sure a large number of the remainder of the cast is composed of Jews or vocal supporters of Israel.  Predominately the Executive Producers and Directors are Jews and/or hard core Zionists.

When are the stupid goyim sheep in the USA going to wake up and realize that a religious group that accounts for only >2% of the US population controls about 75% of the top acting jobs and over 90% of the Executive and Director jobs in the movie industry?? Does anyone realize that almost every movie produced is done to support Jewish points of view or at the least to make sure nothing negative is included regarding Jewish causes or Israel.  If the Chinese or Germans, for example, had this same control of the movie industry in the USA the people wouldn't stand for it!! And NO, being a "Jew" does not make you a part of an ethnic group like say, sub-Saharan Africans or Asians.

I feel left out of the blame game. I wanna play.

As an irresponsible borrower back in 2007, I took out a loan for a house I  couldn't afford. Filed for bankruptcy a year and half later. Oh, and spent up as much credit card debt as I could, only ever paying the minimum.

Since then I've been in full recovery mode, saving any way possible. So please, before throwing anger totally at bankers and such, throw a stone or two this way, cause I sure do deserve it and so does anyone else who CHOSE irresponsibly to take on unaffordable debt.

I've been in lending for a very long time and borrowers should for their own sake have a better idea of what they are doing but you can quit blaming yourself.

Good underwriting on good loans say no when it should and avoids the entire mess you had to go through.

That's like blaming yourself for hiring a rouge plumber and saying you should of known more about plumbing so you didn't get swindled.

Well yeah sort of but then again if the guy was legit it would of never happened either.

Fantastic comment. Wish I could give you more than +1. I hope each of us serfs who are justly blaming the kingpins at the top of this mess will take a look in the mirror as they could not have done it without us, the unwitting enablers of their game for decades. Realistic self-assessment is the only way we are going to survive the next kingpin conman who comes along after this mess collapses -- and he will.

I was (thanks to the internet) aware by 2007. But all through the 90s, I did the same as you -- took on too much credit card debt that I could not afford, and ran up student loans. Looking back, it was fortunate for me that the government called in my loans before I graduated (bit of an exception in my case, basically the bank failed to send them paperwork that said I was still a student) and wiped my bank account completely clean, refusing to give anything back without lawyers that I couldn't afford, so that I was forced to interrupt my studies and get a job. Stayed in corporate wage-slave hell for two more decades, paying off debt, including experiences with debt collectors, and learned my lesson just in time for the internet to set me free with the truth. I got lucky in a way.

I was a good little socialist too, supporting every government handout initiative and attending every politically-correct protest I could find, back then. Supported every loser handout cause-candidate on the roster. It took a lot of reality, going without, and starvation-level poverty to wake me up. I was one of those stupid SJW youth the people here make fun of. My youth wasn't that pleasant but oh boy, did I learn.

I hope more and more of us normal stiffs see the light and follow your example, Rossypooh. You are obviously a survivor who learns from your mistakes by not denying them. Your comment gives me a more optimistic outlook on 'our fellow man'.

I probably won't see this movie because I was done being pissed off about 2010. Timing is everything. My dad died in 2009, left me with the family home and a "shitty" first mortgage from CUNTrywide (yeah, that Mozilo scumbag). I figured it out early on, had the robosigned assignment, got the foreclosure notice, fucking estate attorney left me hanging out to dry, so I did all the work myself, sued for fraud, lived in the house for nearly six years, paid nothing, not even taxes, played the bank attorneys (three of them) like fucking Stradivarious, made the bank pay me $9K to move out with no recourse, so I got mine, I got even with the filthy pricks.

Fuck being pissed off. Quinn is a little late to the party on that note, as is this movie, which, BTW, shows the level of hubris by the hollywood establishment to even make this film. Fuck them. Money grubbers, every last one.

Yeah I can't imagine a commercially successful movie out of this that would actually tell the truth and make it to the screens.

What someone should do is write one of those fantastical novels where everything is a symbol for something else and jazz it up, put some romance, danger, intrigue and of course big boobs in it.

The real message ala the olden days usually had to be hidden to avoid the wrath of those it was really aimed at.

The problem is  everything that was illegal or fraudulent is now business as usual. When the attorney general came out and said and I paraphrase, we cannot prosecute those that perpetrated the fraud because the world might lose faith in the system, we all should have know the majority were fucked. It will happen again (huge liquidation of everything) the system is so levered up, and in reality know one knows what's really on the banks sheets the fed sheets and what anything is worth. No Glass Steagall, mark to fantasy and no prosecution makes one wonder how bad it will really get.

Hopefully next time someone will have the balls to say enough is enough, but I doubt it. We'll probably get QE to the tune of 2 trillion a year, more consolidation of wealth and a lot more part time, low paying, no benefit jobs and the people that own the world will tell you they saved it again and that you should be happy with what you got.

Forget the Big Short.  Sorry Tyler, but I am de-railing your thread.

Listen folks. has anybody seen the movie Thirteen Hours? It's about Benghazi.  I'm asking here because I trust the opinions of people here more than the general public.

I'm asking because there were a lot of details about the Benghazi incident.  I'm not talking about all of the Government hoo-haa after the incident.  I am talking about a lot of stuff that occurred at the US Embassy (and surrounding environment) before the tragic night happened, and during.  I am hoping that the people who made Thirteen Hours did careful research, and pulled the whole story together.

Biggest financial crime in history of world ROBERT RUBIN OVERLORD

NYT, November 13, 1999, Clinton Signs Legislation Overhauling Banking Laws

President Clinton signed into law today a sweeping overhaul of Depression-era banking laws. The measure lifts barriers in the industry and allows banks, securities firms and insurance companies to merge and to sell each other’s products.

”This legislation is truly historic,” President Clinton told a packed audience of lawmakers and top financial regulators. ”We have done right by the American people.”

The Senate approved the final bill by 90 to 8 on Nov. 4 and the House followed suit by a vote of 362 to 57. Congress had previously made almost a dozen unsuccessful attempts over the last 25 years to revise the statutes, which had increasingly come to be viewed as anachronisms.

”The world changes, and Congress and the laws have to change with it,” said Senator Phil Gramm of Texas, chairman of the Banking Committee and one of the bill’s prime sponsors.

Supporters of the legislation say it will also benefit consumers, providing them with greater choice and convenience and spurring competition that will lead to lower prices.

”With this bill,” Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers said, ”the American financial system takes a major step forward toward the 21st Century — one that will benefit American consumers, business and the national economy.” Opponents said it would have the opposite effect, creating behemoths that will raise fees, violate customers’ privacy by sharing and selling their personal data, and put the stability of the financial system at risk.

The privacy issue was a key focus in the long and often heated negotiations that produced a compromise bill, and President Clinton made clear he still wanted to see more done to safeguard consumers’ personal financial information.

President Clinton said the Treasury and White House would put together a legislative proposal to take to Congress next year that would extend the privacy provisions of the legislation.

The Wall Street movie “The Big Short” exposing criminal corruption is one more reason to demand of all political candidates to clearly state their purpose for running for political office.

The question that all American political candidates should be required to answer: “Are you an Oligarchy Washington EMPIRE fascist or do you believe in American sovereignty, independence, Democracy, Bill of Rights, Constitution, Rule of Law and Free Enterprise Capitalism?”

This won't make it into a movie but I recently experienced the Big Shart. The car rental company called me and asked if I could swing by and pick up a new rego sticker. Just as I was pulling into the parking spot, I unthinkingly eased out one of those awful, lingering farts that lives on the uneasy knife edge between gas and solid. I went into the office and of course the girl at the counter was young, friendly and very pretty and of course she insisted on going out to the car and installing the new sticker herself instead of just handing it to me. We went outside and she opened the door and leaned into the car and I could tell the exact moment she realized she wasn't alone in there because her knees buckled slightly and she had to use the car dash to support herself. She put the sticker on the windshield and backed out of the car much quicker than she got in, handed me the keys and gave me a death stare that I'm pretty sure didn't mean "Thanks. That was awesome." I decided not to ask if she wanted to come see a movie with me.

Nah, gotta give the sheeple something. Makes them feel a little better and also gives them a little bit of hope that things might change - which is the most important part that the corporates must engage in.

There must always be something that delivers hope. The current adults will be disappointed and the next generation gets another morsel of hope in a different wrapper. As one who has been at the receiving end of corruption by the German Kohl-Regime 20 years ago (some US involvement according to David Brooks) and seeing nothing being done I don't think there will be any change, only a cycle of morsels of hope.

Why would Americans finally get pissed off now?  I see NBC is running the original "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" from 1966 complete with commercials aimed at people my age.  My kids won't watch it.  They did the same with Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.  Yeah, right, because you never know when your 10 year old is going to spring for the no payments for 90 days option at 7.99 OAC on a sixty thousand car that no one bought all year long.  Oh, OK right.  It is hard enough to keep young kids focused on anything much lesss break their concentration with car commercials, commercials for worthless diamonds and usually an insurance commercial and the obligatory "all new" series spot.  No one watched the last 50 "all new TV series'" that you came out with because it is all politically correct trash.  Look at the ratings.  No one cares about this shit.  Who do these people think they are marketing to?  I won't watch it.

I have a question.  I watched that Badlands show on NatGeo for the same reason I like to watch paint dry.  What was the point of that show?  Was that to make Texans look bad?  Talk about contrived!  Hollywood and the networks are dead meat.  Old worn out shit with too many commercials for shit no one can afford and basically no content.

The movie was an excellent tutorial on what went on during those times. The celebrity explanations of complex financial transactions was truely inspired in that it broke them down to a point Everyman can understand.

In my view, we never took the medicine required to resolve the problem. That was pointed out in the 'fantasy ending' ....

So we have seen a doubling down on the corrupt system we currently enjoy. Our country is so ripe for a demagogue to come along...oh wait..he is already on the scene. And is it not appropriate that the best we can do is .... Donald Trump? Really?

Stay tuned as we drift out of the calm eye of these past few years of QE,ZIRP, and other palliatives and into the backside of this financial typhoon.

PLOT SUMMARY: The average stupid muppet can't decide whether to be robbed by a banker or a politician, and a hollywood producer realized he could steal $15/seat to muddy the waters a little more.

PUBLIC OUTCOME: now that the bankers took half your money, and the politicians took the other half, stupid muppets everywhere should go take a loan out on their credit cards to buy a movie ticket so you can tell the pimple faced kid behind the movie projector how angry you are.

Bob Rubin and Bill Clinton are laughing at you so hard they can't light their cigars. Hank Paulsen and W Bush are trying to get permission from Dick Cheney to have a cigar. Geithner and Obama and madder than hell that they were only able to steal half. And Hilary is lying about all of it.

Hollywood wants to see how many muppets will put themselves even deeper into debt to get even more confused.

RECOMMENDATION: Take your $15/seat you were going to waste on the movie, pay down some of your debt. Struggling for the next five months (ha ha!) to pay off your credit cards is your own choice. DO NOT WORRY - bankers and movie moguls and politicians will think up a new way to steal from you tomorrow.

If what's stated is true it would be one of the few movies living up to expectations this year. But that doesn't seem to harm the box office that much. Terminator Genisys was my biggest disappointment this year. The latest Bond was OK but had expected a bit more. It also seems that Star Wars is more hype than substance. Hollywood is killing creativity by going 'on safe' with the box office relying on remakes and sequels. Hold your horses on the hateful but still enjoyable. It has a nice setting atmosphere but a bit sludgy story line. Nice to see Kurt Russell again on the white screen and somehow Samuel L. Jackson never can do any wrong to me, acting wise. Oh, and Ennio Morricone is back and that's cool. Quentin Tarantino must have really begged him on his knees to get him back.

Welcome to the World of National Socialism.  There are two requirements of National Socialism, there must be cronyism and there must be a race war.

We have cronyism (watch the movie) and we have a race war against the white race which is a war against capitalism and our once republican form of government.

Shortly, in a few years, there will be a counterrevolution the likes of the Russian and French Revolutions.

Those who are going to face the "guillotine" or the firing squads, if they are lucky, are those politicians who fell prey to lobbies, banksters, and those who game the system. We could fix the issues with a significant rewrite of the Constitution but those Progressives who now control the country will not permit it. Hence the violent revolution and the mandatory deaths of those who screwed everyone.

everyone was friendly and the language was clean from swear

then they brought in the east european muslims like albanians later on iraqis, afgans, kurds and so on

back then in school basically all of my friends were beaten at least once by some immigrant muslims

i knew a 15 years old girl who was raped by 5 muslims in the school toilet - no word about it in news papers

I didn't read The Big Short by Michael Lewis or see the movie (want to see it badly) but I did read The Greatest Trade Ever by Gregory Zuckerman about John Paulson and a few others who made billions off the real-estate flush by purchasing the insurance against the mortgage backed securities and BOOM! Money made. Found it fascinating. And in 2006-2008 as I watched the market explode upward, living in San Francisco I was like, "How can a couple, working full-time, maintain this... buy a home at these prices and live? Everyone isn't a CEO in San Francisco or the Bay Area for that matter."

I saw the writing on the wall and knew something was going to melt long before it did. It was a surreal time.

I remember walking around with a real-estate agent looking at properties. She wanted us to put in an offer so bad. I remember her specifically saying, "You don't have enough debt! You need more debt!"

I was like... you're not the agent for us.

Another interesting thing is Hollywood's timing on releasing these kinds of things. Movies in the 40's and 50's were about uplifting America, typically anyway. This movie and the one about the Benghazi raid about to come out, to show how F'd up the WH and the State Dept. is in dealing with Benghazi... these are perfectly timed to get us all even more pissed off at the Dems.

Here comes Trump. It's for his taking. And as I predicted months ago, he will be lambasted as the next Hitler. Nationalism will rise. And we will be hammered by the world for it. It's a script for reality. And we get to watch and feel it.

Just watched the movie, really enjoyed it. They conveyed a lot of cryptic information in ways that were actually interesting and understandable to the masses, like having sexy female models, and even Selena Gomez, explain CDO's and derivatives. One reason there has not been more anger is the confusing nature of all the activity, and naming conventions, a point the movie makes.

The movie was great and didn't pull any political or banking punches, like giving prominent mention to the gratuitous open secret that all the SEC regulators just want to work at the very big banks they are supposed to be regulating, and there are no laws against that.

Well, maybe some more people will get a clue about the deceptive world of finance and the destructive nature of overly clever "financial products".

I learned my lesson from the 2008 collapse at least, switched to all cash and never any borrowing, buying the highest quality long lasting items and then using them for years. At this point my house is stuffed with quality items that are all mine, I pay no one interest except on my car, and I should pay that off this year, and I have an ample bank account, just in time for the next downturn, I wish everyone else had prepared as well as I have done. This movie will probably help more people think about things like that, at the very least the movie shows people how banking houses and so called "government regulators" are NOT the friends of the people.

Wall Street own Hollywood. If they thought The Big Short was any threat to them, it would never have been made.

Reading the book I've created a mental image of Steve Eisman as one of the coolest guys ever.

Real life Eisman looks more like penis-head boldie.

The entire Motion Picture industry is owned by the same guys that the film is about - can't see any sense in giving them more of my money.

Give it a couple of weeks, then go to Youtube and steal a copy. I like it when the bankerfux squeal a little bit about copyrights. Right now they're losing millions and there aint shit they can do. Cover your tracks..

Remember the repeated comments about everyone being F*** stupid??

assuming that you coiuld actually short the environment, what difference would it make?

All those sciency guys running around screeming that the sky is falling,   Think that they just might be correct, and that is is politicians and the fossil fuel guys who own them that are wrong?

Though now even the fossil fuel guys are coming around LONDON — Ten of the world’s big oil companies, mainly from Europe, jointly acknowledged on Friday that their industry must help address global climate change and said that they agreed with the United Nations’ goals of limiting global warming.
