Caught On Tape: Hezbollah Fighter Calmly Dodges Missile Launched By Syrian Rebels
Over the past several months, we’ve attempted to explain why Washington’s strategy to arm anti-Assad elements in Syria is even more absurd now than it was initially.
At this point, anyone who follows the conflict is well aware that ISIS and al-Nusra have powerful, wealthy benefactors in Ankara, Riyadh, and Doha and the US hasn’t always been too keen on cutting off the flow of weapons and money to Sunni extremists battling the SAA. In other words: the US and its regional allies are largely responsible for the rise of the very same terrorists they claim to be fighting.
As ridiculous as that most certainly is, the “unintended” consequences of supplying weapons to the mishmash of rebels and militants fighting for control of Syria took a further turn for the absurd last month when the FSA’s First Coastal Division used a US-supplied TOW to destroy a Russian helicopter conducting a search and rescue operation following the downing of an Su-24 near the Syrian border. That rather brazen act effectively proved that the US, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia are but one degree of separation away from open warfare with the Russians. Additionally, it woke the world up to what’s been going on around Aleppo for months. The FSA has been using TOWs supplied by the US and its allies to shoot at the SAA, Hezbollah, and Iran’s Iraq-based Shiite militias who were called to the fight by Tehran. Here’s the point: the Shiite militiamen who are on the receiving end of those TOW attacks are the very same soldiers that are assisting the US-trained Iraqi regulars in the fight against ISIS in Iraq. In short: they are enemies on one side of the border, but tolerated on the other side where they function as the most effective force battling ISIS (of course the militias recently threatened to kill any US troops who come to Iraq, but that's another story).
If that’s not ridiculous enough for you, consider also that al-Nusra recently released a video thanking the FSA for sharing their TOWs, which means, once again, that the US is knowingly arming terrorists.
Well, for those readers who have enjoyed our coverage of the TOW story, we bring you the following clip which appears to depict Syrian rebels firing a missile at a Hezbollah fighter (note the yellow flag near the vehicle) sitting in a truck. In a remarkable example of remaining cool under fire (literally), the soldier simply pulls forward, dodging death by a few feet at the last second.

TOW ("Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided") is essentially guided to the target by the operator. If the guy in the truck had moved sooner the operator would have simply turned the missile and hit the truck anyway.
Once the truck driver noticed the missile his only response (if he wanted to survive) was to wait until the missile operator could not compensate for his movement in time to redirect.
That TOW missile is probably more expensive than the truck they were shooting it with. Such a waste giving to them any weapons, let alone more or less sophisticated ones.

You can't say for sure, but I suspect he knew that the missile was going to go toward where he used to be. If he could move just a little at the final moment, the missile could not correct course that fast. I have to hand it to him. If he had moved earlier, the missile could have probably changed course enough to get him.

I'm skeptical about anyone's ability to see a missile like that coming head-on. The engine is bright from the back on purpose - it plays a part in feedback to the control unit to get steering corrections. From the front, I doubt you can see much of anything. This is maybe a Chinese HJ-8?
Tank crews seem to react occasionally, so I guess it's possible to see them. It just seems unlikely that these guys in a pickup would have seen or heard the thing get launched that far away and noticed it coming at them. There was another explosion, arty?, then the TOW firing. It did skyline itself and left a smoke trail that could have been visible? The driver could have just pulled up behind another building (out of gunners sight) so maybe it was luck, no matter, a miss? It took 23 seconds from launch to target.

They do leave a distinctive smoke trail. The ATGM also was flown very high in the early stages, so the rocket plume may have been clearly visible against the skyline.

That missile took so long to get there the guy could have taken a dump and smoked a cigarette while he waited. Fucker looked like me golfing, taking the longest route possible.
The TOW is a wire guided missile (spools off the back of the missile and stays connect to the guidance system, gunner sights). The gunner flew the missile high to avoid hitting something between him and the target then brought the sights down on target as it got close. The popping you here is the rocket firing small guidance explosives to keep it on track. It only has so many so you can’t stay off target too long. Yes it seems slow and leaves a signature when fired. The defense is to return immediate large caliber fire at the signature to disrupt the gunners aim. He must stay on target the entire time. He did well. You can see the TOW is not man portable and clumsy to tote around and set up.
That missile was spinning like a "Whistling Pete"... I'm surprised the truck driver knew which direction to move.

A less committed and seasoned warrior would have jumped out of the truck and run like hell. No guarantee either way, but that truck driver showed a commitment to being in the game and winning that one can only learn by being willing to die if necessary, surviving many encounters with death and learning from them.
In the end, everything else being equal - and sometimes when it isn't - that is what determines who wins a war. And it's something you can't learn in school - or teach to a native army recruited by an occupying power to take their place.

They have a time-of-flight to maximum range of about 22 seconds so it looks like a maximum range hit (~ 2.5 miles, 4 km)

The downside to a TOW missile is its long flight time. Syrian rebels were given a lesson in the lack of surprise with a 30+ second flight time. Wasted shot, that.
