hey Blindman,
i've got a special song for you. this is a live version of it. it's Wilco from farm aid in 2005. the song is called 'airline to heaven'. written by Woody Guthrie, but never published or recorded till Wilco were contacted by Guthrie's daughter. apparently, his daughter inherited a trunk full of unpublished songs - hand written on loose score sheets. this incredible trove gives us an indication that Guthrie's gift was even more amazing than we've known or could've suspected. there is no telling how much that guy would've contributed to posterity with some means to record and transmit -- something like, i dunno, the internet. these songs are from a two album set done with british singer Billy Bragg. again, these are throw away songs that he never bothered recording. and to think, all that unused genius and so much more we'll never hear. goddam huntington's disease cut him down too young. death is not just a murderer, he's a thief. it's amazing we have anything at all. between women, wine, disease and death, it's all an artist can do to leave a trail back to where it all started. for Woody that meant Jesus and the 'common man'. Guthrie got big into communism back in the day. it was attractive to lots of salt of the earth dirt farmers in the mid-west what saw their farm-steads plucked up by avaricious bankers when crop prices plummeted and robber-barons jacked up rail freight rates. anyway, Guthrie's daughter contacted our contemporary genius, Jeff Tweedy, and asked if he'd like to peruse through the piles of scribbled clefs, loose couplets and rough-edited genius and choose a few to render through his own milieu. in my opinion, Tweedy worked some special magic for this album. he brought a real respect and understanding of Guthrie to the project, and the results speak for themselves. most especially, Tweedy made sure to use several of Guthrie's religious works -- which was the honest thing to do, insofar as Guthrie devoted much of his creative efforts to worship and was a passionate Chritian...as is the case with much of the bright and bristling genius this world's produced. also, the song's introduced by someone you'll recognize. just between you and me, janus just happened to be at the 2004 democratic national convention...i had a blue and silver lanyard and also a red and gold at one point...got to go wherever i wanted. i shouldn't tell this story, as it's gonna make people even more confused about janus than they already are. nevertheless, i was floor level about 15 rows in when obama gave his famous speech here in boston at the fleet center. i was up in the corporate section later that night hob-nobbing with lobbyists and their mistresses, guzzling their high-dollar merlot and sellin up obama as the next thing for the new generation. told em the golden high-yellow was a matter of inevitability. see, obama y'all think i'm just an asshole. truth is, obama and janus gots history. to be fair, i have to admit that that was a special speech -- especially if you were there. no doubt about it, the halo was full all over barry for a while. now the cycle favors janus. after this full moon tonight, obama wanes and janus waxes. it's only natural. a matter of inevitability. it's a crazy world, Blindman...janus just goes where the wind takes him -- till i catch that airline flight, goes to heaven everynight...
