Dozens Killed In Huge Nigeria Gas Plant Explosion

Tyler Durden's picture

A massive explosion has occurred at an industrial gas plant (owned by Inter Corp Oil) in the southeastern Nigeria town of Nnewi. Local media reports the blast occurred while a truck was discharging its contents, and the ensuing fireball has left over 100 people burned to death.

Nigeria's Vanguard reports,

Tragedy occurred, Thursday in the industrial town of Nnewi, Anambra state when an industrial Gas plant suddenly exploded and with over 100 persons burnt to death.

The explosion rocked the Inter Corp Oil limited(LPG Gas Plant), an subsidiary of Chikason Group.

According to an eye-witness, the fire incident which started at about 11am, was caused by an explosion when a truck  was discharging its contents.

The source hinted that all the customers who went to the gas plant to get a refill were allegedly burnt to death while some of the victims who were in the neighborhood and passers-by also got caught in the inferno.

At the scene of the incident, the charred bodies of the victims and other  severely burnt persons  were taken to Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital, NAUTH, Nnewi.

It was gathered that the  inferno did not allow rescue workers into the factory where hundreds were allegedly trapped.

The horrific scene...

Is this what happens when a 'poor' nation loses enough of its oil revenues that safety standards (and the costs associated with them) get abused?

Agreed, it is sad, but low IQ leads to the inability to maintain infrastructure which is likely built with western engineering and know-how.

Erratic/Sproadic logistics and supply lines meant that hundreds were rushing to get gas at the first sign there was available inventory again, instead of on an as needed basis or over time when inventories run at a steady or more constant stream.

I've said on here before (using my previous two handles) that the Chinese are investing in Africa, and that is a good thing as long as the Chinese are maintaining their own infrastructure.  While not exactly up to European standards, at least the Chinese do have standards.

All true.  Corrupt safety inspections also represent a huge problem in these countries. Far cheaper to pay off the  inspectors than implement costly safety measures and equipment.

Just for good measure, I will consider the possibility of industrial sabotage.  Of course there is no need for conspiracy when incompetence will do, but just covering my bases.

Historically the lack of safety inspections due to falling oil revenues is not a problem in Nigeria
There aren't any standards or inspections.
The lack of funds is because the government biggies have it all wired to their personal accounts in Switzerland

LOL blaming it on lower energy prices? This is a regular occurence in corrupt third world countries. Oil could be at $200 and their infrastructure would still be crap. The government officials steal most of the funds.

Dear Sir,

I am Mrs. Mariam Abacha, widow to the Former Military Head of State, Late General Sanni Abacha, who died suddenly in a gas plant explosion on December 24, 2015.

Upon his tragic and unexpected death, the new civilian Government of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has insisted on probing my family's financial resources and has gazetted all our properties, also. They recently seized all the known family's fund abroad with the assistance of the British Government. It is only this money US$70,000,000.00 (Seventy million US Dollars Only) that he deposited with a security company vault, that they can not trace...

Question: Do we need to install an external bonding jumper ? This is why under the NEC you are not allowed to use the gas lines as part of the grounding electrode system. Bonding is connecting two conductive items so that no voltage can exist between them. As we surmise a mistake was missed and people are not thinking clearly most the time. Following basic standards is the root failure cause in most accurances. As for the methane leak I would be 10 miles away as a first responder period point blank. Lemmings exist in various short term measures.

Usually these things occur in Nigeria after someone has poked a hole in a fuel pipe or maybe even (in  this case) a fuel truck and there is a mad rush by locals to "help themselves" to the disgorging, combustible liquid.  Often hilarity ensues.  Maybe that's not the case this time.
